ENCINITAS: Capri Elementary program to receive award

By North County Times | Thursday, October 23, 2008 5:08 PM PDT

ENCINITAS ---- A program that offers instruction to native Spanish and English speakers at Capri Elementary School has been notified that it will receive an award from the California School Boards Association.

The Golden Bell award will be presented during a ceremony Dec. 6, the Encinitas Union School District announced Thursday.

The dual-language program has been offered at Capri for five years. Students in the program initially receive 90 percent of their instruction in Spanish, but by fifth grade, classes are conducted 50 percent in Spanish and 50 percent in English.

Classes are made up of an equal number of Spanish and English speakers.

The Golden Bell awards recognize outstanding education programs in school districts and county offices of education in California.

Encinitas Mom wrote on Oct 23, 2008 9:49 PM:Wow that would be great. But this is an award given by the California State Boards Association which is a joke. CA public Education is worthless. An education in CA is like 1/10 as valuable as a NY education. But don't worry; I don't expect many of you CA public educated people to understand my comments. Remember though, I will expect you to understand, " I would like some fries with that shake".

Say No to "No Show Mo"

Encinitas Father wrote on Oct 24, 2008 7:59 AM:Que? thats all CA people understand how to say. The CA educational system is one of the lowest in the world. The teachers provide zero value and its all focused on "special" needs. What a waste.

Get over TIP already wrote on Oct 24, 2008 8:10 AM:Mo is the ONLY candidate that has said she is OK with expanding the Capri program. Skiljan & Page say they want to "wait and see" if the program is succesful before they expand it. After 5 years wouldn't that be obvious by now? They're just stalling, because when they say no, they know it will be an unpopular decision.
But no surprise, a typical EUSD response - don't try anything new, innovative or diferent - business as usual is just fine with them. Of course, this does nothing for our schools which all rank less than 5 / 10 in similar schools rankings within CA. The average is 3/10 - way to go EUSD.

BTW - you need counceling - you need to just get over TIP. They're gone; would you just give it up already?

Yawn ... wrote on Oct 24, 2008 8:14 AM:Is anyone that now voices any kind of dissent against EUSD to be labeled a "TIPster on a high horse".
There are plenty of unhappy, non-former TIP parents. Course, there are plenty of happy parents too, but this immediate labeling as a diseenting voice as being one of a former TIP parent is growing REAL old. Remember we're all EUSD parents now.

To Encinitas Father wrote on Oct 24, 2008 8:20 AM:Thank you Mark! Anything else?

To Get Over TIP already wrote on Oct 24, 2008 8:32 AM:When did Mo stated those wise words? During her "no show forum"! What was TIP's ranking? Same place as Duke and friends?

FACTS PLEASE wrote on Oct 24, 2008 9:56 AM:Call the Laegue of Women Voters - they will confirm that Ms. Muir called, not once but twice, the day of the forum to let them know that she had a family emergency and could not make the meeting. Somehow the communication did not get through to the meeting organizers and "unfortunatly could not make it" turned in to "no show".
Please check your facts.

Get Over TIP wrote on Oct 24, 2008 10:42 AM:Email-Mo's elderly mother is sick. She called the League of Women Voter's-twice to let them know. They have let her know that there was an error in communication. She has had 2 forums(any one who has emailed her or called) at her house. She has walked to 2,000 homes for the last 2 weeks. I haven't had any other candidate try me reach me or come to my door. She was extremly polite and knowledgable. She is the only candidate who is against high density development at Pacific View. Thank God!

Over TIP wrote on Oct 24, 2008 10:50 AM:I agree any one who disagrees is a TIP parent-get over it. The EUSD is a financial nightmare-what they spend to close TIP -a half a mil. and another half to cosultants on Pacific View. They have done a bang up job charging the City of Encinitas $1.00 a year at the most expensive property-than paying the upkeep($18,000) out of pocket. Thanks for spending our money wisely.Down with the incumbants and there tag-a-longs.

To All those Tippies Mo wrote on Oct 24, 2008 2:34 PM:The organizers of the League of Women Voters were there and no one mentioned about the phone calls and the family emergencies. I know at least 200 people in this city and not one of them has received a walk from Mo! What city did she walk to? In addition, if the EUSD is in such financial nightmare, how are they surviving the State budget crisis?
Why is Mo having two emails? If a candidate uses her husband's email and puts it on the ballet then she or her husband should be checking the right email. This is scarry that she can't even manage a simple email process but she wants to manage a district! Heaven helps us!

To Over TIP wrote on Oct 24, 2008 2:46 PM:Check your facts please. TIP wasted 2.2 mil of the tax payers' money and you are silent about it. Don't you think spending a half mil better than letting them to exist. I guess doing the right thing is not acceptable these days and it's a nightmare in your eyes. Wise up!

Go Capri wrote on Oct 24, 2008 3:23 PM:Congratulations to Capri!

2.2 mil wrote on Oct 24, 2008 3:31 PM:Let's not forget TIP actually educated 160 children in year 1 and 280 in year 2. An excellent education at that and definitly NOT a waste of tax dollars. I grant you the $95 to the TIP "traffic director" was a HUGE waste of EVERYONE'S money, but the rest was spent on educating kids.

to 2.2 mil wrote on Oct 24, 2008 3:50 PM:More fact check! Please stop bragging about offering great education by TIP. These kids were already doing great at EUSD. They didn't need TIP to take the credit for it. All TIP brought was a bunch of users and opportunist people to this community. One happened to be a highly overpaid traffic director. $95K was only the money he got from TIP. Only God knows what they stole from this community. May be Mo knows!!!
Has she talked about TIP with 2000 people that she has communicated to? I googled her and found some PTA meeting notes and there was hardly any sign of her involvement as an active parent. Makes you wonder!

Expand this successful program wrote on Oct 24, 2008 3:51 PM:My elder child is in the upper grade of Capri’s dual language program. Neither my spouse nor I speak much Spanish. My daughter is currently reading Harry Potter in Spanish and her ELA scores are proficient or above. I think that qualifies the program as a huge success, confirmed by the announcement above. Thank you Capri and our fantastic teachers. My younger child is also in the program. It’s too early to tell how successful they will be, but every indication is that they will do as well as their older sibling.

So here’s my question – why can this program not be expanded? Perhaps at another campus even? Paul Ecke have been trying hard to introduce one, but the school district will not support it. Every parent should have the opportunity to sign their kids up if they want. It’s a great program and should be made available to all. I understand DLI might cost a little extra, but so what – it is such a great opportunity. If I am correct the current school board does not want to expand the program and are even thinking of down-sizing. I have no idea who the school board candidates are, but my vote will go to the candidates that are in favor of keeping language programs alive.

2.2 mil wrote on Oct 24, 2008 4:24 PM:If the kids were "were already doing great at EUSD" why did their parents transfer them?
Please read the post again - it does not say TIP was BETTER than EUSD - only that they provided an excellent education. Is that SO hard to swallow?
Why does it offend you so much that just perhaps TIP was offering something that catered to those kids, that maybe they weren't getting at EUSD.
And please explain - "All TIP brought was a bunch of users and opportunist people to this community." Do you mean a bunch of concerned parents that were merely trying to find the best possbible educaiton for their kids - is that SO wrong?

Charter Schools wrote on Oct 24, 2008 4:28 PM:To Dr. King and all you Charter haters out there:
Did any of you listen to the last Presidential debate? Did you hear McCain and Obama say mulitple times that they supported Charter Schools and saw competition with traditional schools as a good thing and a positive way to improve the education system. Ouch!
Be afraid Dr. King, be very afraid.

2.2 mil wrote on Oct 24, 2008 4:37 PM:And I googled Mary Page - other than the stuff she's posted in the last couple weeks, there's even less about her than Mo.
Back at you!

To 2.2 mil wrote on Oct 24, 2008 10:22 PM:Where would the H's would get a 1/4 of mil from any industry? Only lord knows what else they have taken from this community. May be you are from one of those communities that brought their kids here. Makes me wonder! Please google the people who ran that school and read for yourself. There may not be much about Mary Page but she does not have the baggage that Mo and the charter school have. As for your presidential candidates, if you believe what the politicians are telling us, then it explains why we are in such mess that we are. They say anything to get elected. As they have used the buzz words such choice, parents choice, charter, health care for all!!! Look at the number of charters in California and see how many are authorized and how many of them are still operational. More than 1/3 are gone. Not a good track for solid education!!!! How many public schools have gone? Do the math! read about the charters and their trobles. Even the best of them in La Jolla has issues. Just the past 6 months, how many charters have been revoked in San Diego?
One last thing, where were Mo's two forums? I asked and researched and no one knows about them but you. Are you Mo? Please explain! She is a single issue, charter lover candidate that even her kid doesn't go to his neighborhood school! Why? You probably say, because of choice!Bingo! Then there is choice with public school!
