VISTA ---- Nancy Canseco would have been eight months pregnant Friday.

Instead, the 19-year-old Vista woman with long brown hair and a wide smile was killed late Thursday, after a speeding car slammed into her just yards from her home.

Canseco's family and friends mourned the young mother-to-be Friday afternoon, shedding tears and searching for answers at the family's North Santa Fe Avenue home.

"She was really outgoing," friend Ashley Arellano said, leaning against a chain-link fence in the home's driveway.

"Pretty happy, too," added Jose Vega, Canseco's uncle.

The young woman was excited to be a mother, and talked often of her unborn baby girl.

She was an accomplished cook, friends said, and fond of Mexican singers Vincente Fernandez and Gloria Treve, said Ignacia Vega, Canseco's aunt.

Broken glass littered the east side of North Santa Fe where Canseco's body was found, just north of Bobier Drive. The young woman was walking home from a friend's house around 10 p.m., and was just yards from her driveway when struck.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her unborn child did not survive.

Authorities booked the driver of the car, 21-year-old Mark Allen Davidson, into the Vista jail early Friday. He's suspected of losing control of a 1968 Chevrolet Impala, sliding sideways along the east side of North Santa Fe and striking Canseco.

An initial investigation showed the Impala was traveling roughly 80 mph just before the crash, a sheriff's report said.

Davidson has been charged with two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter.

Four passengers were inside the Impala at the time of the wreck. All of the occupants, including Davidson, were taken to area hospitals with minor to moderate injuries.

The names of the passengers were not available Friday, authorities said.

A toxicology test was conducted on Davidson after the crash. Results were not available Friday afternoon, Vista sheriff's Sgt. Nelson Prosper said.

Canseco's family members said the young woman grew up in Oceanside. She had lived in Vista for about four years, her uncle said. The father of her unborn child lives in Mexico and was not a part of Canseco's life, family members said.

She attended a high school in Oceanside but did not graduate. Canseco also had attended a continuation high school in San Marcos, friends said.

"You never could see her sad," added friend Heydi Juarez, "She was there when I needed her."

a mom wrote on Oct 24, 2008 9:56 AM:This is so sad! I hope they look into this and make sure he wasn't on his cell phone as well. Dr. Phil and an excellent show yesterday about the dangers of texting while driving. I'd encourage the family of the pregnant woman to have the court get his cell phone records. It might not have involved a cell phone but I do see way too many people who are on their phones while driving. I'm sad for her family and I hope they eventually find peace. I'm also sad for his family - killing someone, even by accident is something he is going to have to live with everyday for the rest of his life.

RealsdFootball wrote on Oct 24, 2008 10:44 AM:This is pathetic and sad. Idiots driving recklessly just destroyed a family to be...and all for "going fast" and having a thrill. These drivers need to have there license revoked permanently and spend a good 10yrs in prison for this type of crap!!!

How sad wrote on Oct 24, 2008 12:01 PM:This is so sad and terribly devastating. I am wondering did the man driving the car know her.

question wrote on Oct 24, 2008 12:39 PM:I'm so sorry to hear about a pregnant woman getting killed. It's scary to be out in public when pregnant. My sympathies to the family. Was this where the sidewalk ends going towards Oceanside?

ady again wrote on Oct 24, 2008 2:59 PM:The CHP (california highway patrol) should really re-enforce the law. I always see people multitasking when they are driving! the freeway is very scary, so many stupid drivers. the dmv should make their test harder and harder and alot more check points for those idiots out there! specially close to bars and parties!!!

Christian wrote on Oct 24, 2008 3:40 PM:i am sorry for her, her baby her family and friends truly devastating

to ady... wrote on Oct 24, 2008 9:18 PM:yup it has got to be the CHP not doing their jobs huh? There are just so many of them to every 25000 or so cars. Do the math. Cops can't be everywhere babysitting everyone at anytime. Complain to the courts, the defense attorney's who fight to get the suspect off of the crime. Oh yeah, don't forget the ACLU who does everything in their power to make sure the criminals get off the hook too. The problem isn't the cops, it the courts, lawyers and the whole damn system.

My heart goes to this family

carlos wrote on Oct 24, 2008 9:56 PM:Hopefully now the city of Vista will start thinking of biulding a side walk on the side of the street all the way down to tylor St. I live a few blocks from this tragedy took plac.

Greg in Oceanside wrote on Oct 24, 2008 10:58 PM:My heart goes out to the family and friends of this young woman and her unborn child.

It is certainly sad when a young person in the beginning years of their life is taken away.

too dark wrote on Oct 25, 2008 7:41 AM:This is so sad for this young woman. I used to live down the street from this accident. It's too dark there at night and there needs to be a sidewalk. I used to fear for my daughter to walk on that side of the street when she would walk home from school.

Artsyrat wrote on Oct 25, 2008 9:06 AM:I agree with the comments about a sidewalk needed there. It's time for residents of Vista and that neighborhood to petition the city council the redevelopment committee and the PAC for a sidewalk to be put in there immediately. It will take people coming forward for this to happen quicker. Write your council members or go to these particular meetings and request this sidewalk, a much needed safety concern.

People Lover wrote on Oct 25, 2008 10:11 AM:Devestating accident for all people involved, even the driver and his family. My sympathy to all involved. Many hearts are broken on both sides. The Word says not to condemn but to console and guide and weep tears of mourning for in those tears there is healing.

Right on... wrote on Oct 25, 2008 10:27 AM:Artsyrat!! Too many neighborhoods, like mine, have no sidewalks. WE must demand sidewalks for ALL OF VISTA!!! How come city hall doesn't care about us??? Give us sidewalks and widen our streets! Make them safe for all Vistanfolk!

To right On wrote on Oct 25, 2008 10:52 AM:I suppose if they tax you enough for such projects, you can have anything.

to Right On wrote on Oct 25, 2008 10:53 AM:It's the mayor. That old coot couldn't care less....

To right on wrote on Oct 25, 2008 11:12 AM:Do you really think a side-walk would have stopped this fools car from crashing into her poor lifeless body? Vista is too busy building that nice new city hall to worry about public safety.

Artsyrat wrote on Oct 25, 2008 3:42 PM:It takes voices from the public to get your messages across to City Hall, including Vance. Go to the City Council meetings and speak to the council about it. If they don't hear from us, they will only continue to do as they please. The over priced city hall is a perfect example. It's all about numbers of people, tenacity of any indivigual and volume. Make your concerns known to the city and the media.

friend of Davidson family wrote on Oct 25, 2008 9:29 PM:This was a tragic accident, repeat accident... yes, he may have been speeding but who hasn't at one time or another... very sad times for BOTH families and all that know and care about them.

LIN wrote on Oct 25, 2008 11:03 PM:Interesting how the writer states that the victim did not graduate high school as well as how the unborn child's father was not in the picture. I believe this information is irrelevant in such a terrible situation. Insted the writer should have written about how there were bottles of alcohol found in whatever was left of the vehicle and how selfish and inconsiderate the driver could be to drive recklessly through a residential area and kill this innocent girl. May God bless her soul and her family, and my justice be seen.

LIN wrote on Oct 25, 2008 11:09 PM:To friend of Davidson,
my heart goes out to both families nobody deserves to experience such a terrible tragedy; however I believe an accident is something that cannot be avoided and I believe this situation could have been. Any time a person gets behind the wheel, he/she should make wise decisions which includes not drinking and driving as well as not speeding. If they decide to ignore such rules then they should Suffer the consequences!

Another Friend of The Davidsons wrote on Oct 26, 2008 9:33 AM:Thank you People Lover for your kind words. We need more of you around! The Davidson family is going through unimaginable feelings right now. There is plenty of finger pointing and judgement of this young man to go around, and I am grateful there is someone out there who is doing what God would want us to do. And LIN, have you always stayed within the speed limits? Have you always abided by traffic rules and never found yourself in a situation where you think, "what if" as you think back on how foolish you were when you were younger? If so, congratulations, you are a truly exemplary citizen, a role model for all to follow and admire!

DAVE wrote on Oct 26, 2008 10:27 PM:Driving 80 on a residential street is not an accident or a foolish mistake. This is nothing less than murder.

People Lover wrote on Oct 27, 2008 7:19 AM:TO DAVE, I hope that one day you don't have to eat those words. Never say never. TO ANOTHER FRIEND OF THE DAVIDSONS:I've been there, even if there were 2 or 3 in the car supposedly not drinking, they were there for the ride and should also take blame for the accident, because they let the driver ride while drinking, if he was. Do we know that info yet?

friend of Davidson family wrote on Oct 27, 2008 9:50 AM:no alcohol or drugs in his system, he is not that type of kid

I remember wrote on Oct 27, 2008 12:07 PM:I'm 52 now. I remember when I was 17, had my license for about a year and was driving my Dad's car with a load of friends in it. I drove on the highway, speeding, swerving and nearly crashing into two semi trucks that were on the raod with us. I fortunately pulled us out of the deadly situation only by the grace of God. There's no doubt some or all of us would have been killed. We've all gone our own ways since then but that memory still haunts me to this day. I thank God for sparing my friends and family from my own foolish and selfish actions.

To Mark, who was driving...Hang in there.. don't get the guilt destroy who you are. Admit the wrong doing you have done here so that you can move forward in forgiving yourself 'cause the guilt will eat you up. I'm sure your friends who are defending you here on this blog are right, there's much more to you that this horrible incident. Hang on to what is good in your life and in your own heart and soul.

My sympathies to the family of Nancy and her baby. What a terrible loss.

People Lover wrote on Oct 27, 2008 12:35 PM:Praise God!! That will go good for him! No one would ever want something like this to happen, that's why they call it an "accident"

Susan wrote on Oct 27, 2008 7:22 PM:Driving 80 is in a 35 mph zone is no accident - it is deliberate insanity. Nobody has the right to put others at this kind of risk.

Moreover - I have complained about the lack of sidewalks in this area as well, not that a sidewalk would have stopped this monster of a car, but there are so many pedestrians in this area, many who are kids - shame on the city of Vista for dragging their feet and putting its residents at undue risk!!! Remember this in the election - maybe we need a change of some council members that care about the Townsite area and North side of Vista instead of pandering to the likes of Shadowridge.

To Susan wrote on Oct 28, 2008 7:08 AM:Shadowridge has sidewalks but traffic is horrible and speeding goes on just the same. There have been some terrible accidents there. I use to walk along Melrose and the speeding scares me enough not to do that anymore. Things just happen! It doesn't stop the hurt but remember our days are numbered by a higher power and everyone serves a purpose.

Nancy sis wrote on Oct 28, 2008 11:21 AM:what i think is that Mr. davidson should never ever get out of jail and spend the rest of his life there he deserves it for driving fast especially in the night and if he weren't the type of guy that drinks then why were several bottles of ahlcohl were found in the car with his stupid friend. He really doesn't know what he did to my family for his fault my mom is like almost going crazy I really hope you find peace in your heart for killing two people but me as her sister and family will makes sure you never come out of where you should of been in the first place

Debi wrote on Oct 28, 2008 7:01 PM:I'm sorry to hear about this tragedy. I live in Bakersfield but am from Oceanside. As I read this story when it first came out my 18 yr old daughter kept wondering if she knew her. Today I read the story to my daughter and she started crying she grew up with her. There was a reason why the father wasn't involved and only those close to her know why. I pray that her family will get through this hard time. Her baby and her are in a better place. My regards to all that knew her and her family. As for the driver, he made that choice to speed on a residential street, Nancy and her unborn child didn't have that choice. Toughin up these laws and take away Manslaughter!

StacieB wrote on Oct 28, 2008 8:00 PM:My condolences to the family for their horrific & tragic loss.

To those who think that having a sidewalk could have prevented an 80mph speeding car from this unfortunate event - you are insane! We want to blame someone. So how did it become the Mayor's fault, City Council's fault? Why not blame and hold responsible the person driving extremely over the speed limit? Don't blame Mayor Vance - blame the person driving the car that killed this young lady and her unborn child.

To Nancy sis wrote on Oct 29, 2008 7:16 AM:No words can help you at this time. I don't know who the other person or persons in the car are. The NCT's has a definite habit of naming the driver but not people at the party who contributed.

Aurora L. wrote on Nov 10, 2008 5:10 PM:this is such a tragic event. Nancy was a good person and a great friend to have. I will miss her dearly and never forget her. If anyone knows about any funeral services or where she is laid to rest please post. I am from out of town and dont have any idea how to find this info out. Thank You
