Teaching prejudice, not tolerance

Regarding the letter of Oct. 14: Is Tonya Jamois kidding? Someone, whom she assumes is an Obama supporter, rips an election sign in her front yard and she wonders what it would say about our country if Obama is elected? I guess she didn't realize she was actually teaching her children prejudice. Obama supporters (all lumped together) are hoodlums, vandals and unpatriotic.

It actually also happens to holiday signs and decorations by random vandals who have nothing better to do, maybe just normal kids who have too much time and too little supervision. I believe her assumption is the equivalent to someone thinking that if a John McCain supporter wrote an ignorant, prejudiced letter, all McCain supporters must be ignorant and prejudiced.

Good job for fire photos

These fires were scary for all of us, and devastating for some. It seems that North County has gotten too much practice with these things over the last several years.

While my heart goes out to my neighbors who felt the direct wrath of these fires, I write to compliment the reporters and photographers who went out and covered this story. Especially the photos that capture in single frames the fires roaring against fragile homes and the families who occupy them. I was moved by the pictures. I felt like I was as close as I ever want to be to a California wildfire. Good job!

The right of Hollywood

We conservatives cry foul when Hollywood produces liberal film after liberal film, but when a slapstick conservative comedy reaches theaters, do we turn out in full force? No. So I ask, is Hollywood afflicted with liberal bias, or else possessed of shrewd business savvy? Which is to say, why would they produce conservative films if there is not a market for them?

In a heated presidential political season such as this, it would seem the perfect opportunity for conservatives to rally around "An American Carol," yet according to box office numbers, relatively few have ponied up the $8 admission. And while attending a "Republican" movie may seem unfamiliar territory, doing so could go a long way in advancing the conservative agenda.

We all know movies are political, so rather than sending the obligatory c-note to your local Republican candidate, why not cast a vote of a more unconventional nature and support this film? Who knows? You might even have a laugh or two along the way. I certainly did.

Just vote no to most propositions

Some propositions are beneficial, but it matters not because California can't afford any more debt. Proposition 1A –– No! Costs $19.4 billion with interest, $1 billion/year maintenance. Prop. 2 –– No! Puts many farmers out of business. Food prices increase. Revenue loss in state taxes would be millions annually. Prop. 3 –– No! Costs $2 billion with interest. Good cause –– no funds. Prop. 4 –– Yes! Vote your conscience. Protecting minors is worthy and moral. Prop. 5 –– No! Savings potentially balance $1 billion/year costs; no guarantees. Prop. 6 –– No! Could exceed $2 billion/year plus initial $500,000 cost. Prop. 7 –– No! Special-interest proposition. Real costs are vague. Prop. 9 –– No! Costs in hundreds of millions annually; savings in tens of millions. Prop. 10 –– No! Cost $10 billion with interest; state administration cost $10 million/year. Prop. 11 –– Yes! No significant cost. Any redistricting is better than present system. Prop. 12 –– Yes! Veterans will repay total over life of bond. Prop. A–– No! Another ill-conceived attack on property taxes.

Californians have approved expensive special-interest propositions for years and now must pay up. The legislature misappropriates much and keeps wasting more. Vote the scoundrels out.

Learn more about NRG proposal

It is important for the Carlsbad community to understand that the current proposal for a new power plant by NRG has no plans to remove the existing plant and stack as NRG stated in the Oct. 15 North County Times article, "Power plant project delays expected." The NRG proposal does not include any provisions for the old plant to be torn down and, in fact, two plants would be at the site for the foreseeable future. The old plant will be torn down when the state decides it is no longer needed. This is the case regardless of where the new plant is built.

Imagine Carlsbad will present a forum on the power plant issue at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at the Senior Center. I encourage the public to attend and learn more about this important issue that will affect Carlsbad for generations to come.

Think of the gay kids; vote 'no' on 8

Even as a little kid, I knew I would want to marry another girl. I was graced with a supportive family, yet it was still confusing and depressing that girls only married boys and that was that, and that I might not be allowed to marry whomever I end up loving.

Now that I'm 16 years old, I think I can understand better, but there has always been one argument I could never follow: Protect the children. There will always be gay and bisexual people. Some, like myself, realize their nature from a young age.

Was I somehow perverting and endangering my classmates simply by being myself? I don't think so, but some would have you believe that the slightest mention of homosexuality would spell disaster for a child's innocence. More important, are all us young gay kids going to be allowed to love, and to truly marry? Or will we have to settle for some "separate but equal" sort of union? Please, think of the children. Vote "no" on 8.

Much too easy to alter the constitution

I don't have a beef with gay marriage. If you want to join an institution with a 50 percent failure rate, that's your business, not mine. And, at the moment, all people have a lawful right to civil weddings.

What does concern me, though, is the astounding ease with which the constitution can be restyled in our state. A simple 50 percent plus one vote can impose all manner of majority strictures on the other 50 percent. This ability of just half of us to proclaim something as unconstitutional for the other half seems contrary to the principles of a participatory community.

Thankfully, our national Constitution is far more resistant to such interference. We Californians should toughen up our amendment requirements by changing today's simple majority rule to a two-thirds or three-quarters vote.

The clear intent of Prop. 8 is to constitutionalize the inequality of a minority and to marginalize our gay neighbors. How would you like being told who you can –– and cannot –– marry? Don't cheapen the constitution by taking away a legitimate right. We should all vote No on 8 and thus, demand more stringent amendment initiatives.

Honest public service in Escondido

Last month our mayor and City Councilman –– at the invitation of San Marcos' mayor –– falsely ascribed their economic plans' woes to our 1998 voter-initiated amendment to the Escondido General Plan (Prop. S put certain general plan density-change powers back into the direct control of Escondido voters). The fact is, that amendment over the past 10 years has beneficially influenced our growth.

These are serious misrepresentations, which grossly mislead San Marcos voters as they consider their own Proposition O. Is this good governance? Honest public service?

In 2006, High Tech High made a reasonable offer on land in a low-income neighborhood unpopular with our council. High Tech's San Diego schools (easily visited) actively demonstrate their commitment to excellence for all students. Us? We needed a new high school and basic, positive change for the neighborhood. The cost? Minimal. The benefits? Excellent. The vote? No.

We need new council members. Olga Diaz and Richard Barron have the skills and the commitment to infrastructure and will seek an inclusive climate of mutual respect that will reunite and encourage our city.

Propositions are not fiscally responsible

As the nation's economy does a death spiral to financial disaster and ... our own state's budget shortfall soars to $16 billion, Californians are asked to approve more money to be sucked into the legislative siphon.

A look at various propositions (as noble-sounding as they are) reveal spending run amok: Proposition 3, $980 million; Prop. 4, "Potential unknown net costs of several million annually." Prop. 5, $460 million annually, and Prop. 6, $965 million annually.

A proposition that should be on the ballot, however, is one initiating a state constitutional amendment mandating a balanced budget. ...

Columbia University economics professor and Nobel laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz advises that we have yet to realize the full impact of our current financial free-fall. It is with this in mind that our household is committed to vote "no" on every proposition asking for additional funding. This society must begin to curtail spending money we don't have. Not only are we placing an unprecedented financial burden on future generations, but also by our actions we are teaching our sons and daughters of today that fiscal irresponsibility is acceptable. Responsible people do not spend beyond their means, nor do responsible governments.

Wood a supporter of senior rights

I worked over 20 years in municipal law enforcement. During the last 10 years of that service, I served as sergeant at arms for the Planning Commission and City Council.

Since I came to Oceanside, after meeting the former policeman candidate for the City Council and then as mayor, I have watched Jim Wood become the best mayor whom I have ever worked with. My wife and I have walked the streets of Peacock Hills, and the vast majority of the people we had contacted have agreed that Jim has been very good with the progress of the city, and a strong supporter of the senior rights of the community.

With the statistics from both the police and fire departments supporting the enhanced safety of all the people of Oceanside by the reduction of the crime rates and improvement of the response times for all emergency services, I urge you to vote as I have for the re-election of Jim Wood as mayor.

Obama and 'Joe the Plumber'

Just 24 hours after Joe the Plumber had the audacity to ask Obama a legitimate question about his tax policy, the Obama campaign and his allies in the media went into high gear to dig up every aspect of poor Joe's life to demean and punish him for his question rather than explain Obama's telling answer.

I only wish the media was as diligent in telling us about the background of the man who would be our president and all the details of his (Obama's) radical Marxist mentors and associations: Frank Marshall Davis, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Louis Farrakan, William Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn ... etc.

The message for us here is crystal clear: An Obama administration will not countenance questions and will surely punish achievement to spread the wealth. Is this the "change" we are hoping for?

Proposition 2 obstructs buying local

Reducing our carbon footprint has become an important collective goal and a personal commitment. One popular strategy is purchasing locally produced farm products. When we buy local, we avoid the need for transporting tons of products thousands of miles by truck, ship or plane.

In San Diego, we are lucky to have access to locally produced fruits, vegetables, nursery products and eggs. Now, Proposition 2 threatens to take some of the choice away from us. The economic reality is that a vote for Prop. 2 is a vote to put local, family-owned egg farms out of business. Without locally produced eggs, we will be buying eggs that are trucked in from other states and Mexico.

Vote no and protect our choice to buy local.

Retired teachers week is Nov. 2-8

The level of confusion and misunderstanding in the debate over public pensions is very disturbing. Many people seem to think that teachers, police, firefighters and other public workers receive their pensions as a free benefit. The fact of the matter is that all public workers pay into their retirement.

Teachers pay approximately 8 percent of their salary, much higher than the rate that private-sector workers pay for Social Security. Since teachers aren't eligible for Social Security, their CalSTRS pension is their only guaranteed income in retirement.

Public pensions are certainly a topic for discussion. But let's hope that that discussion is one that is fully informed of all the facts. Retired teachers continue to be busy volunteering to help the community. Statewide, California Retired Teachers Association's 52,000 members volunteered 2.4 million hours this year. This is worth $48 million that families, businesses and the state did not have to pay for services. If you can balance your checkbook, thank a teacher.

Our profound responsibility

We will soon have a new president. The promises, rhetoric and slogans of the campaign will quickly be forgotten. But the character and temperament of our new president will remain constant as he assumes office.

As I recall, "compassionate conservative" was not heard after George W. Bush became president. We listened to his campaign rhetoric, but we failed to understand his character. Eight years later, we suffer from the mistake we made in electing him. We must not make a mistake this time.

We, the voters, have the profound responsibility of making sure the right man and his vice president have those intrinsic qualities that define their strength of character and temperament.

Once again, during the last debate, McCain's anger and temper were so close to the surface, ready to explode –– a serious character flaw that would dominate the decisions he would make, including going to war. And that flaw is not counter-balanced by Sarah Palin. That is why I will vote for Obama and Biden, who have the inner qualities of strength of character, emotional intelligence and wisdom to lead our country during the very difficult challenges that lie ahead.

Obama demonstrates intelligence

John McCain's hip-shooting style of decision-making is demonstrated in three recent decisions: Involving Russia/Georgia, his immediate response was, "We are all Georgians." If, as the president of the U.S., he were to make such a statement, it would really set U.S. policy with Lord-knows-what consequences.

His first uninformed response to the present emergency economic situation was to assured us that the U.S. economy was basically strong. Then, without a program of his own, he rushed off to "lead" the Congress and even proposed canceling a presidential debate. Apparently he did not contribute to, or have much influence on the program, but certainly stirred up the waters with his responsive reactions.

McCain's selection of Palin as his vice presidential nominee and presidential successor after only 15 minutes' discussion with her is especially scary, since McCain has a long history of cancer and he is 72 years old. Except for the religious right wing of the Republican Party, I've yet to hear of anyone who thinks she's prepared to take over as president.

Based on Obama's demonstrated intelligence and coolness, I feel confident that his decisions will be thought through and not seat of the pants.

How can we trust Powell's judgment?

How can we trust this man's judgment? After all, Colin Powell was a key player at the congressional hearings leading up to the Iraq war. He very effectively laid out the intelligence data, and by the weight of his personality, helped sell to the American people the war in Iraq. A war that most of American society disdained and that killed many of our finest young people needlessly.

A darling of the media, Powell will be free from scrutiny for his part and culpability in this war.

WSJ column is must reading

Do you like scary stories? If so, get a copy of The Wall Street Journal, Friday, Oct. 17, and read the Review and Outlook column, "A liberal super majority." They really spell out in detail the problems that our nation will find itself in if the liberal Democrats not only take the White House, but also enough Senate seats to leave it without the power to even filibuster.

Here is what the WSJ says: "If the U.S. really is entering a period of unchecked left-wing ascendancy, Americans at least ought to understand what they will be getting, especially with the media cheering it all on." This is must reading.

Get government out of marriage business

The furor around Proposition 8 is exactly why we need to delineate a clear separation between church and state.

Contrary to popular and romantic beliefs and wishes, marriage in our society is a legal entity, a financial and civil contract between two adults to combine assets and share resources to care for each other and their dependents. When we elected as a society to enshrine marriage as a legal institution, we made it subject to constitutional standards. In order to uphold equality for all under the law, we must vote no on Prop. 8.

Personally, I think the government should be out of the marriage business altogether. To protect the rights of all, any two adults who meet certain criteria for sharing assets and resources to care for themselves and dependents should be able to enter into a civil contract to do so. However, marriage (the blessing or acceptance of a union by a religious community) should be left to religious communities. Do I think this will happen anytime soon? Absolutely not.

So, in the meantime, please vote "no" on Prop. 8 to ensure equality for all under the law, as is guaranteed by the Constitution.

Please don't insult my intelligence

After reading Georgeo Kerpani's letter, "Are you intelligent?" Letters, Oct. 19 ...

Let me also remind him that in 2004, both the Congress and the Senate were controlled by a Republican majority and that George Bush is a Republican president, so any legislation enacted in 2004 was clearly at the behest of the Republican majority.

John McCain also has a couple of skeletons in his closet worth mentioning. In 1981, when McCain sat on the board of the U.S. Council for World Freedom, the Anti-Defamation League said the parent association of the USCWF "has increasingly become a gathering place, a forum, a point of contact for extremists, racists and anti-Semites."

McCain also has the Keating Five, G. Gordon Liddy and Reid/Abramoff in his portfolio of bad associations. The Keating Five savings and loan scandal should be particularly relevant at this juncture, in light of the recent banking institution failures. So please, Mr. Kerpani, if you are going to write a letter questioning my intelligence, please don't insult it by trying to mislead me.

Lies, politics and religion

There are currently two well-done movies out now that play off one another and whose premises and conclusions are inexorably intertwined, interconnected and interdependent: "Body of Lies" and "Religulous."

Bill Maher, the producer and star of the hit movie "Religulous" and the popular HBO show, "Real Time" (one of my favorite shows on Fridays), is a very intelligent, insightful, forthright and sometimes controversial commentator who oftentimes bypasses all the baloney on any given topic and gets right to the center of the issue, and this he has done brilliantly in "Religulous," a documentary, movie about the hypocrisy, self-righteousness and darker sides of organized religion.

And speaking of faith and trust, nowhere is there a greater dearth of these two essential life qualities than in our political ... and corporate systems, where inveterate liars and con artists are able to shift blame while taking reward.

The current orgy of unbridled corruption that Americans are witnessing and feeling relative to the broken economy and ill-conceived Iraqi invasion will no doubt foster serious consequences and blowback on both the macro and micro levels.

Problem can be solved without tax increase

How you vote for the parcel tax increase should come down to one question: Are you satisfied with your fire department's current service? If you are, "no" should be your vote on Proposition A.

Last week's large Juliet Fire at Pendleton, and others that burned in our county at the same time, proved that our current county fire protection services are not broken, but works quite well. No homes were lost in any of our San Diego County fires last week, even though they were driven by our infamous Santa Ana winds. What we experienced last October and in 2003 could not have been stopped with 50 nor 100 extra fire engines and firefighting aircraft are rendered ineffective in winds above 40 mph. Thousands of homes were lost in all the counties, even those with the big-funded regionalized fire agencies.

It will happen again, and the most cost-effective way to prepare for it is for individual homeowners to take pre-emptive measures, such as defensible space. Prop. A would amount to nothing more than a speed bump to a wind-driven wildfire. This is not the right time to raise taxes. ... This is one problem that can be solved without a tax increase. Vote "no" on Prop. A.

Harmony in City Hall

I would like to see Mayor Jim Wood and Councilwoman Esther Sanchez re-elected. During the eight years I have enjoyed living the retired life in Oceanside, I have come to know Jim Wood and Esther Sanchez through campaign forums, attending City Council meetings and watching the City Council on TV when there are items of personal interest to me on the agenda. Both are approachable, friendly and willing to listen to my problems and ideas. They are also willing to help and advise when possible.

I would also like to see Charles "Chuck" Lowery elected as a new City Council member. Chuck is a lifetime resident of Oceanside and an intelligent local businessman who knows Oceanside. During this campaign, I have become friends with Chuck, and I know he wants the same things for the city as I do.

I want a City Council that will study the problems and vote for what they believe is best for the city and not the way their campaign contributors want. I do not expect them to vote as a bloc, but think, act and vote independently. I may not agree with everything they say and do, but they are willing to listen to me and all citizens of Oceanside.

No rational reasons to vote yes on Prop. 8

In his letter on Proposition 8 (Oct. 12), Bill Buelna brought up three points: 1. That the judges who overturned the ban on gay marriage were wrong to do so, 2. That the government should not dictate religious organizations' moral standards, and 3. That gay marriage will lead to the teaching of gay principles, and that this would be unfavorable.

On the first argument, Buelna is incorrect. The judiciary's duty is to protect the rights of the minority from tyranny by the majority. On the second, he is correct. That is one reason why the ban must be stopped: It prohibits religious organizations that wish to marry homosexuals from doing so. In his final argument, Buelna is downright wrong. At the most, kids would strictly be taught that gay marriage is legal #— in other words, the truth.

There are no rational reasons why Prop. 8 should be passed. The main argument that the "Yes on 8" campaign has advertised –– that "gay values" could be taught in schools if it is shot down –– is merely a scare tactic. And given that it's a lie, there's nothing to be scared about. Please vote "no" on Prop. 8.

What are you thinking on 4?

Whoever wrote the editorial recommending a no vote on Proposition 4 must not be a parent ("Vote 'no' on parental notice Proposition 4," Oct. 16). California's current state law does not require health officials to contact parents before the frightening ordeal of an abortion can take place. ...

As a parent, I am required to have my daughter wear a helmet when riding a bike, and I am even required to give permission if my minor wants to visit a tanning salon. How ridiculous to think, under current law, that I should not be notified if my young daughter, who does not have the right to vote, were to need an abortion.

I could not find one example of where a young girl was harmed by telling her parents. However, I found numerous examples of ongoing sexual abuse when parents were not notified. Additionally, when referring to the electorate, I take strong issue with your use of the words "mob rule" in your editorial. If you forgot, a vote by the people is the way our Constitution is changed, not by the agenda of a few loud mouths in government. ... I encourage other readers and other concerned parents, in the name of common sense, vote yes on Prop. 4.

Fire tax extremely regressive

The bond insanity has to stop, and we have the power to stop it. Jerry Sanders wants us to support a fire tax that will cost every property owner $52 per year. At StopTaxingUs.com, we have one fundamental question: Why doesn't fire protection already receive the highest priority from the taxes we already pay?

In 2007-2008, San Diego adopted a budget of about $4.7 billion. Despite skyrocketing county revenues, our supervisors have chosen not to fund firefighting improvements. By supporting this tax, our supervisors have decided that all other budget spending is more important than firefighting –– that there is not $50 million to be found in a $4.7 billion county budget. That's about 1 percent of the budget. This is yet another example of the myopic vision of our leaders.

This tax charges the same amount to every property owner and does not distinguish business from residential. Hence, it is extremely regressive, hurting the working class and retirees the most.

At Stop Taxing Us, we are urging a no vote on Proposition A. A list of our other endorsements can be found at our Web site.

Stop stigmatizing credit reports

I have submitted this idea to the Obama campaign, Larry King, etc. Having no direct response, I am offering what I believe to be a common-sense aid to those in financial straits.

After a foreclosure or late payments, there will remain on the credit report a stigma that will haunt them and prevent them from normal credit. I think it should be a directive that this info be removed from the report if it is a result of the current housing crunch, etc. This should not cost the taxpayers a dime, and would be a great relief to those affected.

Fire tax burden an unequal tax

I am writing to express my opposition to Proposition A –– the proposed parcel fire tax. The current ballot initiative language raises the following concerns: The roles and responsibilities associated with the identified governance structure is ill-defined and lacks measurable objectives. Regional command and control of large-scale fire incidents has not been addressed.

A majority of the funds to be generated by the parcel tax are being directed to a newly created agency, rather than local jurisdictions. A greater percentage of the revenue should be returned to the jurisdiction generating the revenue.

There is an unequal tax burden. The tax is the same for parcels 50 acres and smaller. The tax burden falls disproportionately upon the denser-populated areas.

Governor is bold and action-oriented

Re: "Gray Davis, we miss you," Perspective, Oct. 19: Since taking office five years ago, Gov. Schwarzenegger has brought politicians from both parties together to provide real solutions to problems that have long plagued our state. Besides increasing education funding almost 34 percent, he reversed the expensive car tax and reformed the costly workers' compensation system, saving us billions of dollars. He pushed California on environmental stewardship, showing the nation that you can protect the environment and stimulate the economy. He's led Californians to invest in infrastructure bonds that will boost our economy and rebuild our great state.

The governor pushed through budget reform, creating a rainy-day fund so when our economy rebuilds, we will save money for future crises. He's advocating for political reform to ensure that voters can pick their legislators, not the other way around!

General did his research

Ray Raino recently wrote that an ad featuring retired four-star Gen. Joe Hoar reprimanding Brian Bilbray for voting against the GI Bill is false (Letters, Oct. 20).

Let's get the facts straight: Bilbray voted against HR 330, expansion of the GI Bill. Bilbray voted no against our veterans. Mr. Raino referenced a slight tax increase (on the highest tax bracket: .047 percent) as reasoning for Bilbray's no vote. For the record, this tax was to assist in paying for this education bill. Bilbray prioritized a small tax on the wealthy over giving our heroes what they deserve, what we owe them in gratitude. Clearly, what is important to Bilbray is not our veterans.

Mr. Raino clearly did not do his homework before disrespectfully stating "but it is the general ... who should be ashamed." ... I am confident Gen. Hoar did his research before lending his honored credibility.

I assert Mr. Raino should rethink who should be ashamed. Gen. Hoar stood up for our heroes in pointing out Bilbray's indefensible no vote against our veterans. Voters of the 50th should do the same: No to Bilbray on Nov. 4.

Ed Gallo right for the taxpayer

Ed Gallo understands the danger in catering to Escondido's public service unions' demands in order to garner their support in elections. Ed knows many California cities have been driven to the brink of bankruptcy by exorbitant salaries and benefits paid to public employees.

Because Ed chooses fiscal responsibility over political expediency, he's been targeted by the firefighters union for defeat. The crux of the argument is the union's demand for a policy of four firefighters assigned per truck, per shift, contrary to the three-firefighters-per-truck policy of most North County cities. Ed knows acceding to overstaffing is irresponsible, as the economy and Escondido's revenues are declining. Next taxpayers will be asked to raise sales taxes to pay for demands for excessive employer largess.

While I respect the fine men and women who serve and daily put their lives on the line, I support Ed's opposition to the greedy union leadership and weak politicians who maintain or seek power by delivering more and more to public employees without regard to consequences or the reality of a failing economy. Ed has the courage of his convictions. He deserves your vote for following the right road, not the politically expedient path.

Take Oceanside in the right direction

As relative newcomers to beautiful Oceanside, my husband and I have followed the City Council decisions with interest and concern.

In the past few years, there has been a rash of commercial and residential development, while at the same time many new and existing structures are sitting empty. In some Oceanside areas, we are destroying the last sections of natural beauty and wildlife areas along the California coastline.

We like Oceanside and plan to stay here, yet we feel the direction of the council has been taking a wrong turn. We need a City Council that is in touch with reality and that follows the wishes of the majority of its residents. Choose smart development and quality of life.

Please join us in voting for Mayor Jim Wood and Esther Sanchez and Chuck Lowery for council, to take Oceanside in the right direction.

Many lessons learned during election season

In response to Tonya Jamois' letter dated Oct. 14: It's sad that some awful "unpatriotic liberals" tore up her yard signs, teaching her children that some people do bad things.

In teaching them lessons during this election season, let them know that Obama supporters have also had signs removed from cars and yards and fear for their tires. Did the kids get to watch some of the cable news coverage when McCain asked "Who is Barack Obama?" and someone yelled out, "A terrorist"? And did they see the one at one of Palin's rallies when she was talking about Obama and someone shouted out, "Kill him!"?

In her words, "What does it say about our country if this man is elected? That people with opposing views will be intimidated and discouraged from expressing them?"

Say no to Jones –– cast your vote for Nelson

In 2007, Mayor Jim Desmond appointed the inexperienced Rebecca Jones over several qualified male candidates because he didn't want to see "five middle-aged white guys" on the council ("Desmond, Martin appoint Jones to council," Jan. 10, 2007).

However, before Jones' appointment, Desmond pledged that his nomination would be based on the applicants' presentations at the council meeting, stating, "Everyone gets a chance." However, after the presentations, he began reading from what appeared to be a prepared speech about diversity. ... They didn't want Dean Nelson, the most qualified and third-place finisher in the recent election, because he was too independent.

Don't be manipulated by Desmond and Jones, who believe diversity of gender is a reason to choose your council member. Cast your vote for diversity of thought, for diversity in leadership, cast your vote for a proven leader –– cast your vote for Dean Nelson!

Election isn't over yet

Wow! I listened to a couple of shows on CNN today. Reporters and all covering the election have called this election for Obama. The word "landslide" was used. Obama said that he will be giving Colin Powell a place in his administration. Stephanie Miller on Larry King stated that Obama has won the election and that it is now over.

Earth (America) to mainstream media and pundits and Barack Obama: The American people have not voted. The election will be determined by the American voter, not polls. Not Larry King. Not Colin Powell.

America loves a winner, but I maintain America does not fancy "counting-your-chickens-before-they-are-hatched" arrogance.

Bring back the comics

With all the terrible economic news in the paper, including the bitter and negative political accusations, why would you even consider leaving out a whole page of the comics? The comics are one of the bright items that you have in the paper that is basically filled with advertisements and very little real news.

Come on, North County Times, bring back all the comics –– please.

Your statement about Joe the Plumber asked Obama a question is correct, but its amazing that McCain talks more about HIS conversation with Joe as much as he uses "my friend."

McCain wouldn't be giving Joe a second thought if he didn't there was a political angle he could exploit.

You also go on to "...wish the media was as diligent in telling us about the background of the man who would be our president and all the details of his (Obama's)..." background.

MaryRose, I think the media tried that, but as I stated before, it proved to be "a dog that won't hunt".

If the McCain campaign had spend more time talking THE issue America was really concerned about, instead of making up a new non-issue each day that nobody cared about, McCain might have this election wrapped up, instead of teetering on the brink of a loss of landslide proportions.

Because of his strong endorsement of Obama, Gene asks, "How can we trust this man's judgment?" He goes on to blame Powell for Mr. Bush's foley.

Ya just had to know it won't be long before yet another American hero would be bashed by a Republican. Its become a matter of fact that to too many neo-cons, that anyone who squestion the decisions of a Republican administration, or speak favorably of a Democrat, they obviously are not "real" Americans, Christians, Veterans, etc., etc.

Gene, your attitude is appreciated, because it is attitudes like your that turns the undecided, non-partisan voters, towards the otherside.

Thanks for your help, Gene!

Robin Hvidston:

You express your angst over assumptions being made that Obama has a lock on the election. I agree, that might be putting the horse before the cart.

You conclude, "The American people have not voted.... America loves a winner, but I maintain America does not fancy "counting-your-chickens-before-they-are-hatched" arrogance."

Well, polls aside (which you don't put any stock in, anyway), I've heard both McCain and Palin, as well as nearly all the talking heads on the Fox News Network proclaim victory for the GOP.

So, I guess each side is pretty even in the hubris department.

Since they are, I guess that leave America voting on issues...and, my hunch is that that is going to be one heck of a victory celebration in Chicago a week from Tuesday!

Ron wrote on Oct 25, 2008 7:36 AM:"Wizzer", "Wizzer", "Wizzer"...
what am I ever going to do with you?
True to typical leftist form, in your
Oct 24, 8:12 PM post... BUDDY!
You changed the question! Again!

I has asked a previous poster: You show me, where, and in what chapter of Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" where he ever... EVER talks about wealth redistribution? Show me!

Now, that was MY question...
Here, is the Wizzer response:
"Ron" specifically asks for documentation regarding the claims that Adam Smith supported regulations to protect workers, consumers and renters."

Now, did you see a response there? Cause I sure didn't. I got a bunch of gobbledy-gook.
And let me say this. As I've said the English language is not all that precise. In fact, it's fairly inaccurate, especially when words take on partisan or ideological meaning.
In many cases, people on the right, and people on the left are talking right past each other. Take for example, the following statement made by Wizzer:

"Regulations concerning wages, rents, and consumer protection are covered extensively in various chapters throught Book One "Of the Causes of Improvement."

Now, understanding Smith, as I do, I understand his general tenet of "natural regulation" of resources.
In that, if you set the wage too high you don't get proper productivity, if you set the rent too high, you'll not get a renter.
When my progressive friend reads this, he reads "control", exactly as Reardon had covered yesterday. The assumption by liberals/progressive/whatever else they are calling themselves today... are, that "Rich people" are so driven by their only self-interest, that it will only lead to greed, and a level of opulence that will distract from normal economic transactions.
Hardly the case. On the contrary, it is because of greed, and self-interest that ALL are driven to contribute in a division of labor, to whatever degree they can. So, the guy who sharpens the nails, sharpens them faster because that's all he does, and he has the experience to do it at a profitable pace. The nail sharpener is also a free agent, meaning he can then take his skill to another for higher wages.
And through this single-minded self-interest of the nail sharpener, he makes nails, that are then sold so other's can then build their houses.
This is the "invisible hand" as spoken of by Smith. And the divisions of labor are in the interest of productivity, not class warfare as my leftists friends would argue.

Yes... and much to the chagrin of my dear, dear friend, and other's..
It was Adam Smith who said: "...Labor, like other commodities,..."
Yes, Labor has a price. And it is up to each man, or woman to decide whether the price they are willing to sell their labor for, is worth it.
Given natural supply and demand of market conditions, if you ave too many nail sharpeners, you'll not get paid very highly.

Wanda wrote on Oct 25, 2008 8:01 AM:While MaryRose Consiglio shares here thoughts on Obama and "Joe the Plumber", it is obvious she has not seen the original 5 minutes, 47 second "raw footage" from which this tale was spun ( ABC News, still available on YouTube). There was more to this dialog than the "spread the wealth around" snippet that has been repeated and spun ad nauseum.

Whether you agree with Obama or not, it is clear from watching this that her assertion: "An Obama administration will not countenance questions and will surely punish achievment to spread the wealth" is nothing more than mindless regurgitation of Fox News spin, and has little, if any, connection with truth.

Ron wrote on Oct 25, 2008 8:07 AM:And let me be clear here about the government numbers from both the LBJ and the Clinton administration.
It's not that I "somehow" think they are bogus, Wizzer.
I KNOW they are bogus, and fraud.

Only in a government accounting scheme you could be allowed to keep "books" as dirty as these.
For example, If I took my own employee's retirement money to balance my company books? Would you consider me a felon? I think you would.
Cause's that the exact scenario used in the LBJ unified budget, and it is the same scenario accepted by every administration since. Using other people's retirement money to balance their budget.
Also, another big gripe of mine is, you never say what actually happened, that LBJ cut Fannie Mae precisely to balance.
He cut government.
And the only reason you won't say that is, it gives credence to conservative thought. Which is really funnny to because, with each new "stimulus package" these liberals cook up, it gives even more credibility to the idea that putting more money into citizens pockets helps the economy. Tax cuts work, the difference here is very key though.
For conservatives, we understand this very basic principal that it's "their money", and the government is simply being allowed to use it.
For the liberal, it is all the government's money, and WE will send you back some of OUR money when WE think you deserve it.
The key difference being, liberals want you to believe they hold your financial furture, hence they shall decide when you deserve more of your own money.
So, they dish it out when it suites their particular political goals, that year.
On the other hand, if the government takes in too much money, conservatives believe it is an obligation to return it to those who earned it.
But I digress....

As to the Clinton numbers...
one look no further than who ran OMB during the years (96-98) one Franklin Delano Raines. Yep, the same guy who cooked up the numbers over at Fannie Mae.
But, if I did want to see a similarity, a commonality between these two "supposed "balancing", I'd have to say both cut government. LBJ cut Fannie, and Clinton cut the military.
So, there's your evidence.
But, let me say this as to you insistence that I "buy" these bogus number because they come from the Bush adminstration.
Folks, this is an old a leftist trick, as there ever was one. It presupposes that I naturally buy everything that came out of the Bush administration, and two...
that all government numbers are "the gold standard."
Far from it, my dear misguided friend.
And it is a little Saul Alinsky ju-jitsu, ta boot.
I mean, really. Why would the Wizzer promote these numbers, when he openly says that everything else Bush and his administration has done is messed up?
But in this one case, this specific case.. he cites them?
Yep, he's crazy.. like a fox.
But, nice try.

DD Wiz wrote on Oct 25, 2008 8:09 AM:Basic Capitalism of Adam Smith
The post from "Ron" (7:36am) misrepresents and distorts both my comments from yesterday and Adam Smith's theory of capitalism as espoused in "Wealth of Nations" that I have to suspect he has never actually read the five-volume tome or, if he has, then it is a case of intentional misrepresentation.

I did not disupute the point about market forces or that there is a commodity component of labor. What I have repeatedly pointed out, and where "Ron" makes his huge evasive dodge, is that Smith, like modern Democrats, understood that without the protective framework of appropriate regulations, the "enlightened self interest" that guides the "invisible hand" could degenerate into the "opulence of unrestrained greed" (all terms from Smith).
Smith understood that self-interest, "greed" if you want to call it, is not "good" or "bad" -- it is just there, it is just a force of nature that exists. But it is powerful. And it can be channeled into powerful market forces that can be used to shape and carve prosperous economies, but what "Ron" and the neocons want to do is to just pull out the dams and levees of restraint and let it rush downward in an uncontrolled rage of destruction.

Deregulated market economies have always failed, just as do their opposites, socialism. The balance lies in the moderate middle, where history has ALWAYS shown that broad-based prosperity is generated by market economies, using market forces, but channeled and controlled by a framework of regulatory protections that harness the energy while allowing an infinite range of business decisions within the structural protections of that framework.
Hoovernomics, Reaganomics, Keatinmonics, Bushnomics and McCainomics all lead to the kind of market collapses we are seeing today. Sorry, "Ron," people are on to you.

It looked to me as though Obama relished the question from Joe the Plumber and gave Joe the Plumber a carefully reasoned and thoughtful answer.
Obama told poor Joe the Plumber that with Obama’s tax cuts Joe the Plumber would’ve had more money in his pocket all these years and Joe the Plumber could’ve bought the business sooner.
And if Joe the Plumber did buy the business, Obama told Joe the Plumber, Joe the Plumber would get a 50% tax credit on health insurance for Joe the Plumber’s employees and Joe the Plumber would pay no capital gains taxes on any future appreciation of that business. So that poor Joe the Plumber might actually pay less in taxes under Obama’s plan than under McCain’s.
Obama finally told Joe the Plumber that under his plan all the other plumbers out there making less than $250,000 will have more money in their pockets to be able to buy their own business someday.
Needless to say that after Joe the Plumber’s initial question and Obama’s response Joe the Plumber was left somewhat muted. Until Joe the Plumber went on TV and called Obama’s plan (drum roll please) socialism and Social Security a joke.

Have read different books, it's not.
We've read the same book, but we both come at it from two different perspectives. This was what I was referring two about "talking past" one another. But I want you to notice something that I notice of most leftists, my good buddy Wizzer is no exception.
Take a look at what he concludes as a result of our exchange.
QUOTE: "...I have to suspect he has never actually read the five-volume tome or, if he has, then it is a case of intentional misrepresentation."
END Quote

Now, I don't doubt he has read Wealth of Nations, only that we may disagree on its meaning. But, with most leftists, there is always or nearly always this need to challenge the integrity of the challenger, and demean him.
And not to discuss meaning or the substance of the previous question.
I don't expect him or other's to stop doing this, and this is not crying about this, this is simply par for the course in any political exchange by partisans.
But, in his response he must put forth, as any good debater would, this presumption that his opponent is not up to the task, and all other comments roll from there.
It's a great debate tactic, however, it is lacking in substance.
But, more to the point....

So now, he's been schooled about division of labor, and that labor is treated as a commodity by Smith, so... moving forward.
Now, what does he want to talk about?
That I'm somehow "dodging" an issue?
What dodge? I very specifically asked: Show me, in what Chapter We find Wealth Redistribution according to Smith?
Where is it?
No, he like most leftists wants to move to another question, thus framing the debate a different direction, they hope, in their favor.
Again, another great debate tactic, but very short on substance.

And let me right now attack this misquote of the meaning behind Smith's distaste for "opulence."
Smith believed in maximizing, and efficiency. He believes that "opulence" was a waste of resources, a diversion away from natural and needed productivity.
But, let me put out this thought, just for kicks....
Can anyone here tell me, they've never spent their money on "opulence?"
No Big Screen TV's? No BMW's? When a Yugo would do just fine?
How about some bobbles for the wife? Anyone?
You’re kidding me, right? LOL

Or do we want to switch over to electing a person who has maintained his composure and his principles. In other words, we know that Obama is not running against McCain/Palin. Obama is running against a secret group of handlers who have selected and shaped McCain and Palin to be their front people. So that he could be President, McCain has been willing to change his views on many issues, he has gone along with the selection of Palin despite his own wish to have Lieberman or some other close, experienced leader as a running mate. McCain, it is clear, has sold his soul to the neocon handlers. Palin, so far, displays a willingness to President of the United States in the age of American economic uncertainty and international terrorist threats, not even considering that the job might be too much for her. McCain does as he's told, Palin doesn't blink. No matter. It's the suits in the back rooms that will continue their hold on America if McCain/Palin win. Obama is not a messiah: he's just Obama, an actual person running for office. If he winsl, we get President Obama; if he loses, we don't know who we get, but they never ran for anything, and they plan to continue benefitting from the neocon agenda of the last 8 years.

That's a pretty high threshold, my friend.

He then goes onto to state: "The balance lies in the moderate middle, where history has ALWAYS shown that broad-based prosperity is generated by market economies, using market forces, but channeled and controlled by a framework of regulatory protections that harness the energy while allowing an infinite range of business decisions within the structural protections of that framework."

Now, that's a lot of good sounding chatter from my good friend, but.. as I said before, the meaning of the words, and the phrases take on very different meaning.

This one phrase, in particular warms every leftists heart: "...but channeled and controlled by a framework of regulatory protections..."

This is what I like to refer to as "The Smart Guy" Approach. It presupposes that certain elites are smarter than the rest of us, and required to make us do the right thing. This is where they get this idea that "only those who love government, can run it properly."
Even though our founders said: "It was, at best, a necessary evil."

But the part I like best, is this next one: "but channeled and controlled by a framework... while allowing an infinite range of business decisions within the structural protections..."

Now, that's funny, cause he says it twice. Look at the "control" words:
"channeled", "controlled", "structural",
"framework"... BUT... BUT...

"...allowing an infinite range of business decisions..."

Within the framework, the "smart guy's" set up, you have limited choices, not infinite decisions.
And this is why I always say: The Liberal Menu of choices.

Words mean different things to different people, English is an inexact language, and people come to accept terms and their meaning within their particular circle, or ghetto's, as I like to call them. I find this description fairly accurate, in that, within each culture, are sub-cultures, who devise their own "speak", this is
Lib-eze, if you will.
And something else I've spoken to, many times.

Backs big fed stimulus
By Jay Fitzgerald

Jay Fitzgerald has been a journalist and blogger for years. He's now the general economics reporter for the Boston Herald.

The nation’s battered economy needs an old-fashioned “Rooseveltian lift” of regulatory reforms and government spending on the infrastructure, clean energy and other sectors, U.S. Sen. John Kerry said yesterday.

Kerry, facing a re-election challenge from Republican Jeff Beatty, rejected GOP calls for more tax rebates to stimulate the economy, as was done last spring."

“I am for a stimulus package. I am not for a stimulus package that just sends out checks,” said Kerry at a Boston Herald editorial meeting yesterday.

Instead, Kerry said the nation needs to spend more in areas that will both help the economy in the short run and long run - such as on roads and bridges, clean energy initiatives and life sciences."

I disagree.

Not sure what "THE issue America was really concerned about" is, but, take your pick, I doubt (as did his campaign staff) that he would be doing a whole lot better had he taken "the high road" and debated issues with Obama.

If THE issue was continuation of the Neo-Orwellians' ruinously expensive, counterproductive war, he would have lost.

If THE issue was continued deregulation of his corporate "sposors", he would have lost.

If THE issue was health care, he would have lost.

Pretty much whatever THE issue was, he would have lost.

I would hope (but doubt) he has enough moral character to regret his sleezy campaign, but it was his best chance.

You see, that's the liberal menu, that's this "channeling and controlling" of market forces, through "regulatory frameworks", they speak to. So that THEY may "harness the energy" and dispurse it into
a finite range of acceptable business decisions within the liberal structure.

And the liberal solution to natural market forces is: Redistribution.

Thomas Jefferson understood this concept to, of granting to each man the rewards of his own industry:

"To take from one because it is thought that his own industry and that of his father’s has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association—the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it."

"A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor and bread it has earned -- this is the sum of good government."

The post from "Reardon" (11:19am) expresses his opposition to Prop A.
I do believe we need this funding, and I do not agree that this is "a blatant attempt to subvert Prop.13" since Prop 13 allows voters to vote for property tax increases.
Since "Reardon" has repeatedly stated in the past that I am "always" wrong, I hope "Readon" will not be to disappointed to hear that, while I disagree with his reasoning as noted above, I do agree with his conclusion.
I am voting against Prop A.
My reasoning is quite different thant "Reardon's," and is based on the excellent points made this morning in published letters from Gary Gonsalves and Carlsbad's mayor Bud Lewis, that this proposal is extremely regressive, taxing all parcels the same, whether they be a tiny owner-occupied dwelling or a large commercial center worth millions.

OK, now I have explained why I agree with you on a proposition, even though for quite different reasons.
Several days ago, I noted that I was voting AGAINST Props 7 and 10, which purport to promote alternative power and alternative automobile fuels respectively, joining conservative, liberal, libertarian and environmental groups in opposing them.
The conservatives and libertarians are opposed because they generally oppose environmental efforts by government and the liberal and environmental groups are opposed because, even though we support these goals, we oppose the specific efforts by corporate special interests to corner the market and obstruct small business competitors, which both of these propositions do.

So I am going to repeat my question to "Reardon," "Ron" and "hardtack," which so far all of them have dodged and evaded.
Even though I expect your reasoning will be quite different than mine, have you taken a position yet on Props 7 and 10 which I oppose?

Reardon, you are incorrect. Check your history of prop 13. This is not a subversion of prop 13. This is a part of what was put into place with prop 13. It lets the CITIZEN's decide themselves if they want to tax themselves on property by requiring a 2/3's majority to pass. Prop A requires a 2/3's majority to pass just as was intended in prop 13 as per Howard Jarvis and Paul Gann in 1978.

Which book? Which Chapter? Which Page?

WFTV-Channel 9's Barbara West conducted a satellite interview with Sen. Joe Biden on Thursday. A friend says it's some of the best entertainment he's seen recently. What do you think?

West wondered about Sen. Barack Obama's comment, to Joe the Plumber, about spreading the wealth. She quoted Karl Marx and asked how Obama isn't being a Marxist with the "spreading the wealth" comment.

"Are you joking?" said Biden, who is Obama's running mate. "No," West said.

West later asked Biden about his comments that Obama could be tested early on as president. She wondered if the Delaware senator was saying America's days as the world's leading power were over.

"I don't know who's writing your questions," Biden shot back.

Biden so disliked West's line of questioning that the Obama campaign canceled a WFTV interview with Jill Biden, the candidate's wife.

"This cancellation is non-negotiable, and further opportunities for your station to interview with this campaign are unlikely, at best for the duration of the remaining days until the election," wrote Laura K. McGinnis, Central Florida communications director for the Obama campaign.

McGinnis said the Biden cancellation was "a result of her husband's experience yesterday during the satellite interview with Barbara West."

Escondido is a fairly small city with a high percentage of renters who don't pay property tax. Repaying this $98M bond will fall on those of us who own property. We will be paying at least until the year 2054, and probably beyond that.

In fact, it taxes them even more.

So whats in it for you?

The perception is that the middle class gets a bigger cut than they did under Bush and thats a flat out lie.

All of this is in his plan.

But I hope you Obama supporters dont plan on your children inheriting your estate. The estate tax had all but disappeared, but under Obama, it will get new life. There goes the idea of you sharing any of your money with your heirs when you die.

So far, theres nothing in it for the middle class.

NO, "Reardon," I am not a member of North County Forum.
When they were first founded, about 12 years ago, it was supposed to be a non-partisan gathering of liberals, including Democrats, Greens, Socialists and Independents. But the Founder was an active Green and increasingly moved the North County Forum toward Green party interests.
After Nader took enough votes away from Gore to bring him within the cheat-proof majority so that Republicans could steal the election, many Democrats were greatly angered with the Greens.
But when Nader again ran in 2004 and many of the North County Forum people supported him over Kerry, and the North County Forum leader made it clear to me when we had a one-on-one breakfast together that the pro-Green trend would continue, many of the Democrats including me went our separate ways.
I am a Democrat, an Adam-Smith style supporter of market entrepreneurship, and I am not a leftist, Socialist or Green.
I have many personal friendships with North County Forum people and occasionally participate in their events, as they also sometimes participate in events for the Democratic Party.
But I am not a member, do not attend or participate in most of their events (and only one of their annual galas in the past four years), and I am the wrong person to recommend as a guide to the NCF.

Do you continue to spend, spend, spend, as if you still had your previous job?
If so, then you are behaving like city and county government, stupidly and foolishly.
If not, why not?
Maybe you cut back on those nice vacations to France and you go to Coco's instead of Black Angus and you go to Men's Wearhouse to buy $500 suits instead of stop buying $5,000 suits.
Prop. 13 was to try to keep the county from raising both your assessed valuation AND your tax rate unhindered.
Prop. 13 imposed a limited budget on agencies who thought that the sky was the limit, that didn't care who they taxed out of their house as long as they got their ever-skyrocketing budgets.
If we, as Citizens must live within our means, so must government.

are you talking about the "ALLEGEDLY" disturbed woman who was "ALLEGEDLY" attacked.
Are you talking about the "ALLEGEDLY" disturbed woman who had a MIRROR-IMAGE "B" on her face, the one that no evidence has yet to be found that there even was an attacker, let alone a 6' 4", black, Obama supporting attacker.
A ton of Swiss cheese has fewer holes in it than her story.

Alf wrote on Oct 26, 2008 9:04 AM:Correction to my last post, the line that said
"and you go to Men's Wearhouse to buy $500 suits instead of stop buying $5,000 suits."
should be
"and you go to Men's Wearhouse to buy $500 suits instead of buying $5,000 suits.".
My apologies.

Skip wrote on Oct 26, 2008 11:23 AM:I finally got used to the word "Xenophobe" thanks to roberto1.

Now what in the heck is a "xenophone"

Did you mean "xenophon"? Greek soldier and writer. A disciple of Socrates.

But Skip wrote on Oct 26, 2008 1:52 PM:Everyone knows that a xenophone is the phone belonging to a xeno and an odometer is a device that measures odos. Or it could be a tyyppo.

Roberto1 wrote on Oct 26, 2008 4:31 PM:Ok you guys win, all McCain supporters are xenophobes and racist.
