CHAPARRAL 28, VISTA MURRIETA 27: Overtime thriller
Chaparral races out to 21-point lead then hangs on to win on PAT kick in OT

The Chaparral sidelines erupt with cheers after the team scored a touchdown in overtime against Vista Murrieta. (Andrew Foulk / For The Californian) MURRIETA ---- That Chaparral and Vista Murrieta played a game that came down to the last play comes as no surprise. Not that this game didn't contain plenty of those, too.
Chaparral place-kicker Nick Fernandez split the uprights with his conversion kick after Mitch Glasmann hit Antoine Arnold with 14-yard scoring strike in the first overtime period, and Chaparral handed the Broncos their first regular-season loss in nearly three years, 28-27, in a Southwestern League thriller Friday night at Vista Murrieta High School.

The two teams were ranked No. 2 (Chaparral) and No. 3 (Vista Murrieta) in Riverside County and were playing a game under the pall of tragedy. Vista Murrieta junior varsity football player Shea Iose died earlier this week.
"Tonight's about Shea," Chaparral coach Tom Leach said.
It was a stirring contest, very reminiscent of the last two games in the series, both won by Vista Murrieta, which came down to the Broncos making critical stops in the final seconds to secure a two-point victory in 2006, and a one-point victory last year.
Backup quarterback Hayden Clegg, who moved over from linebacker to play offense for Vista Murrieta the last couple of weeks due to an injury, connected with Casey Marquez on a last-ditch, 76-yard bomb to tie the game with 52 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
"It started with Bradley (Randle) hitting the outside linebacker, blocking for me," Clegg said. "And then I just heaved the ball up there, and Casey made a great play."
After scoring first in the overtime, on a short Randle touchdown run, Noah Dobson pushed the conversion kick wide to the right. That opened the door for the Pumas, who scored on the pass from Glasmann to Arnold and then saw Fernandez's successful kick give them the victory.
"We made some mistakes in the second half that kind of set us back," said Glassman, who was 8-for-14 for 76 yards and a touchdown. "But we showed heart. We finished."
Chaparral, which did not commit a turnover and outgained the Broncos 276-250, ended Vista Murrieta's 26-game regular-season winning streak, 16-game home winning streak and 11-game league winning streak.
"I'm proud of how we dealt with the week," Vista Murrieta coach Coley Candaele said, "how we played the game. They're a very good team. They deserved to win. On paper, they're quite a bit better than us right now."
Chaparral (7-1, 2-0) jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half on a a couple of short touchdown runs by Jonathan Diaz (34 rushes, 152 yards) and a 34-yard jaunt by Tyrell Gomes. With starting quarterback Derrick Brown out with a thumb injury, Vista Murrieta leaned heavily on the running of Randle, who rushed for 104 yards and three scores.
Randle got Vista Murrieta (7-1, 1-1) on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:27 to play in the first half. The Broncos opened the second half with a successful onside kick and proceeded to give the ball to Randle. On the last of his six consecutive carries, he worked off a block by senior guard Owen Weissberg to score from the 2.
"Bradley is a special kid," Chaparral defensive coordinator Robbie Robinson said, "and a couple of times we got a little overanxious with our pursuit. He had some nice cutbacks and made us pay."
John Hardy continued his strong play on special teams for Vista Murrieta when he blocked a field goal in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Fernandez missed a 37-yard field goal attempt with 2:02 to play that could have put it out of reach. Three plays later, Clegg hit Marquez with the improbable heave and Dobson forced overtime with the PAT kick.

Would be quite a treat to watch these two meet again down the road in the playoffs when Vista Murrieta is at full strength and mentally ready to play rather than mourn. Hand it to the Pumas, they were able to snatch victory from defeat this time against a wounded foe.
no excuse wrote on Oct 25, 2008 9:20 AM:props to the Pumas. they did a great job and the article does not express how they really played, again. They shut down BR and exposed the weaknesses of VM. Live and Learn. True champions will overcome diversity.
Bronco Parent wrote on Oct 25, 2008 11:01 AM:First off, congrats to Chaparral for winning on the scoreboard last night, it obviously meant a lot to them.
Secondly, I will be the first to admit that winning is always numero uno when you get to the college and pro levels. However, at the high school level, you are generally dealing with teenagers and young adults, and a good part of the mission of the coaching staff is to mold the athletes into FINE YOUNG MEN, ones that can one day be respected and reverred. Last night, when the final whistle blew, there was one winner on the scoreboard and different winner when it came to CLASS. Class, you see, starts with COACHING and LEADERSHIP. And the visitors last night were sorely lacking. Two examples that are plain to decipher....following the game, the PUMAS found it necessary to come to midfield, on top of the BRONCO logo and jump up and down, yell obscenities to the home side and laugh and point, all the while their classless head coach stood and smiled. Second example, after his team did this, Leach had the audacity to utter "tonight was all about Shea". Well, to those that were close to the situation at VMHS this week, one would immediately know that for LEACH it was never "all about Shea", it was about victory at all costs and to erase the shame of 3 straight losses to the stellar Bronco program. After the death of the JV athlete, Bronco coaches approached LEACH about a short delay of the scheduled Friday night game....I am sure many there at CHAP already know how this transpired, but to those that haven't heard it, LEACH protested and said, if no game on Friday, VMHS must forfeit. Yeah, SURE, Leach, Friday was all about Shae.
The simple truth of the matter regarding Friday is this, LEACH and other PUMAS.....you should have destroyed the Broncos on Friday, yet you were within a eyelash of LOSING. Oh sure, celebrate, what a hollow victory it must actually be down deep inside of you.
As Broncos, we only pray to the good Lord that he allows VMHS/CHAP to meet later down the road on the field again to settle things, this time on a level playing field.
Final Score -- 28-27.... As before, VISTA MURRIETA continues to stand tall and remains the beacon of CLASS in the INLAND VALLEY.
The Puma Way wrote on Oct 25, 2008 12:14 PM:Vista is clearly a great football team. The thing that amazes me is how well their back-up played. Great coaching by their QB's coach!
Randle is terrific too. But the real story was their defense. They really do hustle around out there. Kudos to their DC and his assistants. Terrific game plan.
As for my Pumas, they are one resiliant team. They go up 21-0 and then practically give the game away with some ill-timed mistakes, and put us all through a rolloer coaster ride, only to come out on top. It was awesome!
Congratualtions to coach Leach and Co. for a stellar game plan. Holdig Randell to 100 yards was spectacular. BTW, the Qb's coach from Chap deserves a huge round of applause! Glassman looked like the best QB of the SWL last night- bar none!
One other shout out to #30 Diaz. This kid is making his case for the league MVP. There are other runners who have great talent, but none with bigger hearts than this kid. Great game. Great players play great in big games and this kid brings his "A game" every week!
Go Pumas!
Vista Mom wrote on Oct 25, 2008 12:29 PM:I was there in the stands......the Pumas and Broncos played hard and were evenly matched despite the score at the beginning. The final score showed how close these two great teams played, it was fantastic to be a witness to it! Thank you to the spirit of Shea Iose who was a strong presence on the field in his defensive position....great job kid!
Puma Cty Champs wrote on Oct 25, 2008 12:50 PM:Wow! That commentary from Bronco Parent didn't resemble anything like class to me. Sounds more like sour grapes and whinning.
Let me remind you of something Bronco parent, your team of "classy athletes", taunted the Chaparral kids all night long. And after last year's victory, they acted the same way you claim the Pumas did.
The players were excited, what would you have them do? Your preachy tone is rediculous and part of what most of us "outside of the realm of class" have grown disgusted with regarding Vista Murrieta- The Golden Calf of HS football in the valley.
BTW, it should be known that three of your classy players cursed at and taunted one of our coaches who was with his 5 year old son at a sports park during the week. Stating "Just like coach Candael says 'we always kick the pumas explitives'...We're going to waste you on friday"-etc...
All infront of this adult and his five year old boy. Pathetic. It sounds to me like you're a real person of faith, so you'll probably recognize this "Even evil can recite the Bible and it's verses to suit his work."
Sounds like you're just another sucker of the "VM cool aid" friend! Drink up!
high school football fan wrote on Oct 25, 2008 1:14 PM:I am not wanting to talk down any team I just want to say what I saw on the field!I agree that both the Pumas and the Broncos played very well! The pumas offensive line made some great blocks for Diaz to run the ball well. Mitch Glassman has a good head on his shoulders! He stayed calm and made some great passes into good coverage and the Pumas defense displayed toughness. At the same time I want to repond to the comments made by "NO EXCUSE" Saying that the Pumas "Shut down BR". Are you kidding me! I would not call 3 touchdowns and over 100 yards rushing Being "shut down"! Let me remind you that at one point in the game the Pumas had a 21 to 0 lead, and lost that lead and won by only one point in overtime! Dont be so quick to forget that the Pumas were shut out in the second half. The Broncos deserve just as much "Props"! They are a very well coached team that is also very tough on both sides of the ball. They also have just as much talent as the Pumas and The Broncos definately gave the Pumas a scare! So Mr. "NO EXCUSE" open your eyes and see the facts dont be so simple minded and one sided. Yes the Pumas won but they almost lost it and definately gave up a good lead and and also exposed many weaknesses themselves!
One thing that I thought was WEAKER was the icing and celebrating and the stomping up and down the Pumas did in the middle of the field on top of the the Bronco emblem. That was very disappointing to see. It showed no class and a lack of respect on behalf of Chaparral. I give "PROPS" to BOTH the Pumas and the BRONCOS who have no excuse, but also should not be ashamed with a well played game and coming so close to pull it off in the end. I hope to see these two teams play again in the playoffs. Good Luck to both teams in the rest of their season!
Another Bronco Parent wrote on Oct 25, 2008 1:41 PM:To "Puma City Champs": It's ok that you don't recognize CLASS....we wouldn't expect you to. Is that supposed to imply because we teach our kids how to behave with class and character we are a cult? Once again, it's ok....we really don't expect you to understand. That disgust you feel, it's really jealousy. I know people who were in your stands last week as visitors....they said it was a horrible experience with fights breaking out and everythig. We will pray for you.
no excuse wrote on Oct 25, 2008 2:05 PM:104yds for BR is "SHUTTING HIM DOWN." He will run for way more yardage and touchdowns against the other teams. Holding him to 104 yds exposes the one-dimensional offense that VM plays. Don't make excuses for VM. They got out coached and out played for this game. Again, true champions (both teams) will overcome diversity.
Yet again another Bronco parent wrote on Oct 25, 2008 2:24 PM:Look at the score for FACTS.....no one got shut down!

"Shutting him down" I dont think so, slowed him down yes but not a shut out! Im not making excuses for Vista just stating what I saw. "OUT COACHED" and "OUT PLAYED" ???????? Im not sure what game you saw. But you are talking like Vista got Whooped, and that is not the case. I know that you are a Puma fan but dont be so bias. Your Pumas did play well, but you cant make it sound like it was a total blowout! Remember I am complementing both teams and both teams played well but neither team was perfect. I also cant say that the better team won cause being up by 21 points and winning by only one point in the end just shows me that Vista is every bit as good as Chap. Bro!!! Its okay to give "props" to both teams no one is going to think that you are not being loyal to chap. Dont be scared! Its ok to say nice things about your opponents! ;-)
Football Fan wrote on Oct 25, 2008 2:43 PM:As a witness to the game and not a fan of either team, I see alot of issues about the subject of class. First thing is that Chap. has no class because their coach has no class and many of the assistant coaches apparently wouldn't know class if it hit them in the face. Be happy you won, celebrate, but don't stomp and jump on the mid field logo. Act like you have been here before. Second, VM is very hypocritical, they talk about class, but they are short on it too. I personally heard comments last week from VM players calling Chap. Crapparal and how they were going to beat the *#%! out of the Chap. I give to edge to Chap on this subject because they have never claimed to have class, so when it is not shown it is expected. In all, I am sorry for VM's lost this last week and considering the situation, I thought this was a moral victory for them. We can only see how the season plays out to see which team got a bigger boost out of it.
Football Fan wrote on Oct 25, 2008 4:02 PM:I too was at last nights game. What an exciting game to watch. Yes everyone wants to celebrate a victory and so they should but what I witnessed was so out of line for high school football. The Pumas celebrated on their side of the field right after the game, then after a few minutes they were led by one of their coaches to the middle of the field as the players followed to stomp all over the bronco logo. What classless act!!!!By the way PC champ our coaches at VM don't speak in those terms they not only coach us how to be the best football players that we can be, but also how to transfer it into our everyday life. I have yet to hear them put down any other team, they teach us how to respect each opponent.
VM and Chap..no CLASS wrote on Oct 25, 2008 4:15 PM:It's funny how VM is claiming that Chap has no class, which they do not, but act like they are the class of the valley. Candaele is great a acting like a nice guy...but really he wants to win at all costs. It's amazing how their soph QB just happen to "transfer" to VM.
Leach does not pretend to be a nice guy and wants to win, at all costs. In the end it really sounds like the Bronco fans posting have sour grapes, get over it, you can't win them all, you should know that, example, second round of the playoffs each year.
Someone that Know Something wrote on Oct 25, 2008 4:43 PM:Great game played both sides. Chaparral made the plays to win the game, great job. Chaparral was a team on a mission and Vista made too many mistakes to win a big game like this one. Chaparral was the preseason favorite and if you compare the starting line ups on both teams, Chaparral is the better team in about 80% of the starting 22 positions. Chararral should have won the game and did by 1. Yes Vista's is one-dimensional right now (Starting QB out, back up QB has been playing LBer all year, Best WR Out Broken Leg, Offensive line 2 soph.& 2 Jr.). Vista is just trying to survive until they get health. The individuals (not in uniform)that popped off about Vista kicking Chap's #$@% were either not players or not very smart because Vista and Coach Candaele knew that a lot of things had to go there way in order to beat Chap. Why give Chap anymore motivation? Just because some writes or says something does not make it true. Chap is better right now. However, you do not celebrate (in uniform) by stomping, dancing, and pointing at the crowd on the logo of the other team. Leave this type of behavior to the clueless Division 1 programs around the country where winning is everything.
To Bronco Parent wrote on Oct 25, 2008 5:08 PM:First of all, the part about postponing the game NEVER HAPPENED. Ray Moore (VMHS AD) said in this paper that Friday was about returning the campus to normalcy. Second, in regards to the taunting, the Puma players rushed over to Leach following the game because he couldn't get away from the reporters at midfield. If he hadn't been at midfield answering questions, the celebration would have been on the sidelines. Also, never mentioned was the fact that CHS raised over 1,000 dollars for the young man's family in one day. It was a great game and both squads did their communities proud. I'm sorry if you thought our kids overcelebrated, but they were excited, just as the Vista kids were last year for their victory(when they celebrated quite boistrously). But to come on here making false accusations anonymously is cowardly. I wish both teams well as they continue their seasons.
Festering Wound wrote on Oct 25, 2008 5:09 PM:Now we have it, it appears a wound has been festering for some time at the high school over there off Winchester Road. Football Fan hit it on the head with one of his sentences, which read: "...because they have never claimed to have class, so when it is not shown, it is expected". Truer words could not have been uttered. As for the "Crapparal" comments that were allegedly made by alleged VM students, well I think those just make nice bulletin board material. Jealousy of the resounding success at VMHS abounds throughout the SWL, but it is now fact that the jealousy will never be stronger than it is at Puma High. The bitter taste in your mouth....Coach Leach, Puma football players, fans and parents.... is that of knowing you won a technical decision last night over a team that had its mind on more important things, was shorthanded, and almost awoke in time to show you regardless of score, you may have won on the field, but you merely beat an opponent that was blindfolded and had one hand tied behind his back.
John wrote on Oct 25, 2008 5:21 PM:HI all,
Let me explain why the PUMA players were jumping up and down on the so-called broncos emblem at midlfield. I was there and it had NOTHING to do with the VM team. The head coach Tommy leach was still being interviewed by the local press at midfield and the assistant coaches said "go celebrate with Tommy and Gatorade him" (Water only in the gatorade bucket by rule).
I did not hear any players say anything about the logo, and quite honestly, they could care less about any Bronco logo.
The CHS snack bar raised money at at an all Chaparral event for Shea and donated numerous items to the school and the family.
The comment above is yet another in a long line of VM rah rah rah commentary that is echoed by the local media about how great Vista Murrieta is all the time regardless of what other teams in the valley are doing. The truth is that the Pumas outplayed the Vm team for 3 quarters and only the onside kick (one in a million btw) and a 71 yard hail mary with the defenders missing by less than an inch made the difference. (Two plays that will never happen again this century)
(Last year, CHS went for and failed on the 2 point conversion, knowing that the league title is meaningless, but again was in the CIF quarters while VM was at home.)
However, I have filmed and been involved with Valley teams for over ten years and have never seen finer hosts, more gracious stadium personnel, better coaches, and the Athletic director in one of the finest ADs I have ever met. What a classy team and a classy school. Last night Vista Murrieta High School redefined sportsmanship and they should be applauded for that.
We at CHS sincerely and authentically mourn the loss of your player - we truly do.
High School Football goes on though, and thousands of players have been working for 6 months to compete in the league and have had an incident ever year affect the VM game including fires, fires, more fires, and player issues.
They will likely meet again - Vm will hopefully have their QB starting, and the onside kick will not grow centipede legs. I think the CHS coaches also learned, instead of easing up on the scoring out of respect, next time they will just bury the team 48-0, and then be called unfair sportsmans on this very board.
Lately in the USA, and especially in youth sports, you just can't win, no matter what you do....
Puma Student and Fan. wrote on Oct 25, 2008 7:36 PM:I am very disappointed at how VHMS has handled this game, and this coming from a STUDENT. The only reason you are making these false accusations is because you lost, and there is NO other explanation. Also I cannot believe that you would exemplify the fact that your school contains "class" when your players yelled obscenities at one of our coaches and his 5 year old son, earlier in the week. This truly screams as much class as the dirt beneath our feet.
And to deny that as fans, a school, a team etc. do not feel any loss for Shea Iose, is truly repulsive. We earned over a $1,000 for this student and gave several items to your school and his family. How could those words even come out of your mouth?
And no matter what at the end of the day it only matters who WON, and that is the Chaparral Pumas.
*ALSO THANK YOU JOHN FOR THE CORRECT INFORMATION.*
You can continue to put down Chaparral High School, our football team, the coaching staff and the fans but no matter what you cannot take away our pride because we are THE PUMAS.

Chaparral has a great team this year. Great win for there program. However, please do not make make up things that you know nothing about. Derrick Brown went to Vista on his own without any help please know the facts before talking.
Where did Glassman Chap's QB come from??
Transfer from Elsinore
How about #4 Darius Guillory WR/DB?
Thats right Transfer from Great Oak.
And a few others!!! Many due to your speed and conditioning coach that is recruiting from the local pop warner and junior all-american programs with his so called YOUTH FOOTBALL COMBINE!!! Which is a CIF violation called Undue Influence because he is a paid coach by the Chaparral Football program. Check and CIF rule book and be careful.

Dream on my friend, ain't gonna happen. While your dreaming, stay away from the nightmares of the past 3 years when it has been a much different story than Friday night.
We will play our hearts out in the hopes of another meeting this year with Chaparral, you can bet your bottom dollar on that one. If it doesn't happen, we will see you guys next year at your place.

I have been to games at both all schools in the SWL and I have to say the two best host schools are Great Oak and Vista Murrieta. These are by far the classiest two programs in the valley. It is not all about winning. It is about making these young men into members of a society that needs well rounded people. These two schools preach these things win or lose. You do not see this leadership at some other schools like Temecula Valley. Stay with class and watch what Great Oak and Vista Murrieta do.

As for the party at midfield, watch your gamefilm, I am sure it was still rolling. I filmed it and have the evidence. I have watched it several times today.....once again, investigate and be enlightened.
Many of us at VMHS stand together on these events and it will not soon be forgotten. Parents and coaches, not players are to blame. Kids follow the example they see in their everyday life. In the case of those at CHAP, the proof was in the pudding last night.

I do admire your spunk, but accuracy is not one of your "A" subjects, so to speak. As for "REPULSIVE" the items that were pointed out by Bronco Parent and were witnessed by many an eye on Friday, now that is as repulsive as it gets. In life, those that wrong others quite often find that payment for those wrongs are quite expensive later in life. On Friday, one school showed the very class it lives by while another school omitted the first two letters in class while showing theirs.
Long Season wrote on Oct 25, 2008 9:04 PM:Hello everyone, just having a chance to read all the posts/comments. The rivalry between VMHS and Chaparral has truly blossomed I would say. However, it is very safe to say, the season is far from over, each of the teams have but one loss and will likely make the CIF playoffs. Chaparral won last night, not worth arguing about it and it is basically meaningless in the whole scheme of the season. VMHS will be at full strength by week 10 and will be a force to be reckoned with. Wouldn't it be awesome for these two fine programs to meet in the CIF Southern Section Championship? I would relish watching round 2 of this rivalry if it happened.
Proud Bronco wrote on Oct 25, 2008 10:17 PM:We at VMHS are also smarter than the average person. Because of hard work, great coaching and dedication we ended up winnning games. So we really are not upset that we lost, we are actually proud of ourselves that we fought hard, even though we had faced several adversities this week. What did upset
me was that I was walking acrossed the field and I saw the coach and the football players run onto the field a few feet from me with their helmets in the air stomping all over the Bronco. Sorry I was there, no reporter, just the coach encircled by the puma players. One more thing. in regards to VM players being disrespetful to one of your coaches. How you know they were VM players? Were they wearing their jerseys, you said it happened earlier in the week. Besides Vista and Chaparral coaches do know each other and word would have gotten back to them. I doubt if players would take that chance.

Are you talking about the Festering Wound of taking your league title the last two years, taking it home, and maybe placing it on top of the TV while you watch the CIF quarters and finals on TV while Chaparral went on to the Home Depot Center, and to the quartes last year?
Also, what did Kavon Seaton do in Army Navy Marine Classic? Oh, Tyler Hansen was MVP - with 4 scores - thats against coastal players.
Let's face it, VMHS is a well coached team with well behaved stadium attendes, and people who care about kids. I have been to stadiums in the last 3 weeks where I feared for my life. VMHS redefined HS football sportmansship. BUT CHS has class too, and please see abve explanation for this completely wacked idea that the PUMAS stomped your Bronco. The head caoch was standing at midfield and the players rushed him and gatoraded him.
My visit to your school and to your stadium was as cordial, courteous and by the book as I have ever witnessed. I also had Murr Vall pop warner team in the stands rooting for VM, even though they know I am on the PUMA side, and we proved it this week.
Congrats on a great game and comeback. Something 5th dimentional must dictate a close game or something..
The comments above just prove that some VM fans really and truly believe that VM should win every week, no matter who they play, and if they don;'t there's a conspiracy of some sort.
Come play Centennial some time, and we talk about adversity and conspiracy.

That one thng being that both schools would lose to Bishop Gorman High School out of Las Vegas. Talk about a powerhouse team in high school ball and they are the real thing. Go to the school's web page and see what a great tradition this school has. This is a fairly small high school of about 1000 but competes and dominates schools of 3000 to 4000. They were state champs last year and 14 players from last years team are playing on college teams. This private school raised $58 million in donations to build a new school. They are like the Yankees and Cowboys everyone is jealous of their success. My son would be attending and playing there if we lived in Vegas at a cost of about $10,000 per year in tuition. He is fortunate to be playing here in the valley and is helping anchor the best offensive line of any team in the valley. So the two of you stop bickering about the past.

It is simple, schools like Bishop Gormon are bound to win when they are private and can basically recruit a chunk of very good athletes. If a private school was created in the valley and could pick and choose some of the best players in the Southern Section, heck yes they would not only compete but dominate. I believe it is Oaks Christian up the road (and many others) that have players of famous actors and athletes playing for them. With a few exceptions, the public schools basically play with the cards dealt to them through district boundaries. Transfers, which have made Chaparral a bit stronger this year are not usually the norm, but the exception.
patience wrote on Oct 26, 2008 10:50 AM:Parents come on..We are proud of both programs for a well fought game. With so much adversity going on, why are we putting each other down. This game has brought on well needed attention to OUR VALLEY and the SWL especially. OUR KIDS go to the best schools in California. If OUR KIDS had their choices, they would want to all be together at one school..but its impossible! They grow up together through years of Temecula and Murrieta Pop Warner programs, some through the Jr. All American Programs and then when they become Freshmen, they have to be divided between the 5 GREAT SCHOOLS in OUR VALLEY. We need to proud that the TV Stations are promoting these games. Be proud that Student/Athletes from OUR SCHOOLS have the ears of Recruiters and Newspapers. Be proud that OUR SCHOOLS are on the National Radar and State Rankings! This is what we need so that OUR STUDENT/ATHLETES can reep the same benefits other leagues have gotten for years.
I am a GOHS supporter, and we would love for our kids to someday share the experiences and successes both these teams have had over the years and current, we thought this was going to be our year, our time to make an impact, we lost players early in our season to injuries and more key players (Luna #7,Centanni #69 and questionable Duffy #12) in Friday nights game, so our road is a little bumpier, but our pride is not lost and the Wolfpack will continue to work hard and compete in this league.
I just wanted to say Good job to Vista Murrieta, Chaparral Pumas, both Coaching Staff for bringing us Exciting Friday Night Football. Someone had to win, someone had to lose. We shouldnt have sour or bitter grapes for celebrating..any other team would have done the same.
STOP THIS wrote on Oct 26, 2008 10:56 AM:STOP THIS. If you really think this is true go report it. The CIF will laugh - none of this happen. I was there and I have it on film.
In fact both teams have it on film and the CHS players ran to their coach and were jumping with him. They never went to stomp on the VMHS logo.
It was a good game and just enjoy football. 4 games in four years all within 3 points. That is good football on both sides of the ball.
STOP THIS NOW!
G-Money wrote on Oct 26, 2008 11:31 AM:To everyone the kids from both teams played there behinds off, all this talk about who has class and who doesn't is STUPID both programs have class thats why they are able to do what they do, I know both head coaches very very well and most of the kids on both teams, are any of them saints no, but I think that holds true for all of us don't you think.
The Swami of the Inland Valley wrote on Oct 26, 2008 11:32 AM:It is always about winning even though before and after almost everyone says it is not about winning. That is the politicaly correct thing to say. I think we all know in any competition it is about winning. It happens at the youth soccer level, in pop warner, little league and club programs. Part of competition is to win and every coach wants to win as do all players on all teams and I would venture to say just about all fans have that in mind when they show up. What makes the difference is how coaches and players react after the competition is over whether they win or lose. It is ok to celebrate a victory because after all you just accomplished a goal that both teams had prior to the start of the contest. Playing fair and giving your best is all that anyone should ask out of these young men, if they gave their best and came up short they are still winners. Sometimes the circumstances are just the way they are, that is life. So don't place all your investments in one portfolio becasue we have seen what can happen when one does that. Less then 3% of these players will go on to play D-1 ball so they better know how to act and respond to life's hard knocks and hits off the field.
A football fan of GOHS and Chaps wrote on Oct 26, 2008 11:53 AM:Hey people!
We should just be happy for the team that won. If VMHS had won the word would be different, due to the situation of the week. Very sorry you lost a player and Im sure it did affect the game. GOHS lost several students and teachers last year. But I heard around the valley GOHS being called the "DEATH SCHOOL". Not funny, being that I knew all the people who passed away. It's just people talking because of our emotions are wounded. I know several of the boys from the PUMAS team and I'm sure they are happy of the win. They are celecbrating like any other team would do after such a hard game for both teams.
Too bad it was taken to the extreme, they are a bunch of boys taken by the excitment of celebrating. Wouldn't VMHS had also celebrated if they had won? Also, being for some of the boys, this might be their last time to play in a team such as CHS. Many are senior moving on to greater things other than high school football. I wish them all the best. I know they have learned and taken "something" from this past game. Class will eventually come. Winning and Losing IS part of the GAME. Someone had to win and someone had to lose. Too bad it was at the expense of the two top teams.
Someone mentioned GOHS. Thank you!!!! I know several of these boys too. They work just as hard as any teams in the valley. They are called names too. ... But they try to win any of their games. I don't know about what class has to do with these boys, class, what can they do when they lose to CHS or VMHS? Go home and try to have class and be back on the field on Monday. I think they are happy to just be part of the league. They are awesome boys and their parents should be proud of them. These players have high hopes of one day beating the top teams. I'm sure they would have a parade if they won to either of the teams mentioned. GO WOLFPACK! History is still being made for you.
Celebration wrote on Oct 26, 2008 12:29 PM:Wake up people, of course a team can celebrate, but two things were wrong with the Pumas celebration: (1) The taunting and obscenities; (2) The location and stomping of the school logo.
Chap has been around for years, you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Until you have different leadership there, this will continue to happen over and over like it has against other teams, Friday night was not the first time.
End of story, now let's move on.

Big VIII wrote on Oct 26, 2008 5:08 PM:It would be an ugly scene if, by chance, Chaparral were to meet one of the members of the Big VIII (Centennial, Norco, or Santiago) in the postseason, pulled off an upset and decide to dance on our logo. In short, it would be the first and last time that happened.
I do agree with some on here that say, get over it. For both Vista Murrieta and Chaparral, you are both full of yourselves, this game means nada. Win 4 in the postseason then you can gloat. But, note to self for all of you in wannabe league, SWL, hasn't happened the last few years and ain't gonna happen this year. BIG VIII owns the Southern Section.
Take a Step Back wrote on Oct 26, 2008 5:23 PM:From Tom Sheridan of NCTimes: "...and Chaparral handed the Broncos their first regular-season loss in nearly three years, 28-27..."
Step back a second, the streak of 26 straight regular season games was very impressive. This for a program only 5 or so years old. Puma fans, match the accolades given the Broncos then you may get some respect. After all, this is what all the stomping of the logo was about, wasn't it....? A pure case of jealousy which has been brewing for some time now.
We at Vista are not sour, the season is far from over and this being a rebuilding year for us. Of course we wouldn't lower ourselves to Puma classless acts from Friday, you can take that to the bank. Ultimately, if it isn't Vista that wins the CIF title this year, we definitely want it to be one of our fellow league members...even Chaparral.
Big VIII Rules wrote on Oct 26, 2008 5:28 PM:Neither of these teams will win CIF anyways so in a sense they will both be like TVHS. Just another season.

I can almost guarantee Mr. Daniel will receive a thank you from parents who attended Friday night's game. VM receives a thank you letter from every school that comes to our stadium. We are proud of the fact that we treat our competitors with respect and we welcome them to our school. That is the Bronco Way. I think many of our rivals want us to feel bad about the loss....too bad because we don't. It's just a game people....one game. Our football program is incredible and we are very proud of it, win or lose.
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!
to all VMHS. wrote on Oct 26, 2008 8:55 PM:You can CLEARLY see in the video located on THIS website, that Coach Leach was being interviewed in the middle of the field and the boys rushed over to Gatorade him and celebrate their win. There was NO stomping of your emblem, maybe you should of asked the interviewers to proceed with questions somewhere else if you have SUCH AN ISSUE.
Get your head out of the sand and realize what went on.
DO NOT come on here and label Chaparral as a school with no class, because we all know and you know deep down that it was fair and square and that you had to lose sometime and we cannot help it if it was OUR time to show what we've got.
You can make up all the excuses in the world to hide your feelings of hatred and jealousy, but at the end of the day it all comes down to who won.
*ALSO I would like you to know that any accusation Vista Murrieta has made of Chaparral, is wrong. They just choose to come on here and twist and contort what REALLY went on.*
Commish wrote on Oct 26, 2008 9:00 PM:Aren't we all lucky we don't live in Big VIII country. Could you imagine living in Corona or Norco?? By the way Santiago is not that good this year and either is Norco. Only Centennial is good and one out of 8 in the league makes it a weak league. Any team in the SWL---the most competitive league in the southern section has every team except for TVHS thatcan win CIF. To be a strong league you must be good from top to bottom, keep the gap close and this is not the case in the Big VIII.
To Vista Staff wrote on Oct 26, 2008 10:00 PM:Hats off to you as a teacher at one of the most incredible high schools in the state of California. The students, teachers, coaches, athletes of Vista Murrieta continue to be head and shoulders above other schools in the state and SWL as a whole.
I am a proud parent of a Vista Murrieta STARTING varsity football player. At the end of the game when Coach Candaele and other coaches spoke, there was not one hint of anger or regret over the close defeat. In fact, there was a sort of relief, the streak is over, now lets get down to biz of re-focusing efforts and growing to a better football team. Once the injured players are back, the Broncos will regain their place as one of the top couple of teams in the Southern Section of CIF. If our opponents thought this defeat was gonna destroy us, they grossly misjudged us. We immediately picked ourselves off the ground and will start another streak next Friday night. Don't be surprised if this streak takes us to new levels.
Chaparral did us a huge favor on Friday night and they have not yet realized it yet. It won't take long until they notice, though. Goodnight everyone and have a great week. Continue to pray for Shae's family and GO BRONCOS.
APOLOGY wrote on Oct 26, 2008 10:49 PM:On behalf of Vista Murrieta let me be the first to say: We apologize for those that claim to represent us who MAY have unfairly accused Chap football players of "stomping" on our logo. We reasonable people understand how happy that football team was to beat us; they are kids, they were celebrating. It is on film and the proof is there for anyone to see. Unless you have seen the film or were there you really shouldn't speculate. I was not there at the end nor have I seen film which is why I used the word MAY. Shea you and your family are in our prayers. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!
Vista Fan wrote on Oct 27, 2008 12:02 AM:I saw what I saw because I was there. Yes I too have seen the video. You can see as the coach was being interviewed he had already been gatoraded because he is all wet the bronco logo is in the back ground, The team had already celebrated on the sideline. I was walking acrossed the Bronco Logo when the team came running over to completely cover the logo and celebrate. Sorry, but that is how it happened.
High School Football Fan wrote on Oct 27, 2008 10:04 AM:I don't know why everybody has a problem with a logo. If you don't want people to step on it, simply don't put it on the field. It was a good well balanced game and somebody just had to win. So get used to it. Move on. Don't make the High School sport a political area, trying to find excuses and blames.
OK, kids were celebrating, happens. And don't try to blame the lost game on the loss of one family. This is a great tragedy, and I feel sorry for the family, but from what I see over the years, in just few weeks, only handful of people attending Friday's game will even remember the kid's name. He will become another statistic. Only family will remember him and maybe few friends. Rest of us just sat there and thought "Good thing, it didn’t happen to me". So let’s face somebody lost somebody won. Let's move on, there is always next week...
puma fan wrote on Oct 27, 2008 11:30 AM:We the fans of puma football.Sat in the stands just like bronco fans. Many in tears over the loss of a child, trust me we felt your pain like he was our child. We gave the same respect for shea and his family as Bronco fans. And after that we played football. The game on both sides of the ball was great, both teams gave all who attended the greatest show in the valley. And as in past games very exciting. Why make it more than that. Why do we chose to think that our kids would react in any other way than they did. Bronco kids would do the same. They were happy maby more to win against such a great team as yours. The choice to celebrate is not a choice it happens in sports and should be ok. Right. It would be hard to get on the bus and ride home and celebrat on our field. Also your keeping puma parents and family from coming out to celebrate, would not happen in temecula so maby it should not happen in murrieta. As for the rest of the season, good luck and go PUMAS.
To HSFF wrote on Oct 27, 2008 12:26 PM:HSFF Don't come on here talking about the big deal about logos. It is obvious you know nothing about sports or sportsmanship. You never ever celebrate on someone elses logo. That is like someone celebrating a setback your family has had and dancing in your front lawn. Then someone saying you shouldn't have put in the lawn if you don't want anyone to step on it. Secondly, you are a very insensitive person. You have no idea what went on
at VMHS last week and how it affected the whole studentbody and especially the football team of which Shea was a member. You are wrong, what we will forget in no time is this loss, we will always remember Shea.
John wrote on Oct 27, 2008 5:30 PM:To HSFF,
Look my friend, I was standing with the team when this happened, and have it on film as well.
You are Flat-out, completely, so totally, undeniably, dead wrong - as a matter of fact, you are delusional!
Chaparral held a special event at Chaparral and donated the money to Shanes family! Tyler Hansen - the CHS MVP QB from last year now at Colorado - his Dad coaches as VMHS and CHS has the utmost respect for VMHS and their staff.
Look bud, reach out and grip reality - you lost. Chaparral did what any other team would do except that because the local press was still interviewing Leach because it was such a huge game, they went to midfield to do it.
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY! I WAS THERE AND THERE WAS NO-NONE-ZERO-NOTHING-NADA-ABSOLUTLEY NO MENTION WHATSOEVER ANY talk about any logo, from start to finish! And we are not going to sit here and listen to you make stuff up because you lost the game and your mad, and ruin what has become a great and respectful rivalry.
Go be mad - but stop lying and halucinating. And please tell anyone else that believes this made up garbage that they are wrong too, before I post the whole thing on youtube!
Enforcer wrote on Oct 27, 2008 5:51 PM:Why is VMHS using the Denver Bronco logo?? This is a violation of the NFL rules policy to use a trademark logo from a professional or college team. I am sure in the next year or so the school will be required to change the logo from its current look. I am suprised CIF has yet to bring this to the schools attention.

Notre Dame has also inquired about using their school colors for the uniforms. Why don't you have any originality at VMHS?
