PREP FOOTBALL: Valley Center tunes up by routing Orange Glen
Elites Ramona, Oceanside now await No. 6 VC
By DAN HAYES - Staff Writer | ∞
VALLEY CENTER ---- Rob Gilster wasn't concerned before Friday's contest that his Valley Center High football players were looking past struggling Orange Glen to their next two games against top-flight competition.
The Jaguars' coach maintained that his players were still stinging from an Oct. 10 loss to Westview, vowing they would be focused and prepared for visiting Orange Glen.
No. 6-ranked Valley Center certainly was that, scoring 49 first-half points en route to a 55-7 rout of the Patriots in a Valley League game Friday.
The victory improved the Jaguars to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in league as they gear up for road games against No. 4 Ramona and No. 1 Oceanside, both 7-0, in the next two weeks.

"We better be ready. Those dudes are physical," Gilster said of the upcoming schedule. "We were champing at the bit (against Orange Glen). We were ready to play."
Valley Center was prepared in all aspects.
After the Jaguars defense forced a three-and-out on the game's opening drive, junior Julian Lavigne blocked an Orange Glen punt to give his team possession at the Patriots 20-yard line.
Stanton Upson needed only two runs to put Valley Center ahead, scoring on a 7-yarder to make it 7-0.
Travis Bernard ended Orange Glen's ensuing possession by intercepting a pass and returning it to the Patriots 5-yard line, setting up Tyler Bernard's 2-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Preston. It was the first of two scoring passes for Tyler Bernard, who also threw a scoring pass to James Johnson, and the first of two TD grabs for Preston.
Five minutes after that, Upson took advantage of an offensive line that produced monster holes all evening, closing out a 77-yard scoring drive with a 16-yard TD run. That made it 21-0, and Upson added another score before the first quarter ended, a 17-yard run that gave Valley Center a 28-0 lead.
"(The loss to Westview) was a reality check," said Upson, who finished with 83 yards rushing on 13 carries and three scores. "We can't just win because we're Valley Center. We have to come out hard and prepare."
Valley Center senior Jeremy Rubio was hardly prepared to handle the ball, but the linebacker hung on to his first career interception in the second quarter and waltzed into the end zone for his first touchdown ---- a 19-yard return ---- to make it 43-0. It was one of four interceptions by the Jaguars.
"I wheeled my hips and got out there," Rubio said. "I was stunned. I was not expecting it. It was special."
Andy Early surpassed 100 yards rushing for Orange Glen (1-7, 0-4), but Valley Center's defense made sure he needed 33 carries to do it. Early finished with 112 yards and a third-quarter touchdown.
As if the Patriots, who started with 24 players, weren't already shorthanded, they lost another starter to injury in the second quarter. Cornerback Felix Gonzalez sustained a head injury when he was knocked flat on a block by Valley Center's James Johnson.
Gonzalez was carted off the field for precautionary reasons after a 15-minute delay. He signaled to the crowd by pumping his left arm several times as he left the field.

Let's get the point we don't have football at OGHS.
I really don't wanna see a life threatening injury vs Oceanside.
Can someone please do something?

MONEY..MONEY..MONEY wrote on Oct 25, 2008 8:48 AM:It is all about the MONEY! EUHSD should be ashamed of what they are doing to OG's Program. Until someone holds EUHSD responsible for an injury resulting from a foolish schedule decision the greed will continue. The Administration at EUHSD wants these "MONEY GAMES" between teams with in our City and other City's that they figure parents will travel to our fields. The EUHSD does not consider the liability of injuries because they feel they are immune. NEWS FLASH...YOU ARE NOT! If a decision is made using criteria that is outside the scope of High School competition your bubble is broken. MONEY is not part of that criteria....YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for everything that occurs. (injuries on the field / incidents off the field.....)
Hopefully OGHS and the Parents will work with the District over the off season, and a resolution will be reached. I think it would be a good thing for San Diego Football, not just OG. There are several teams in the area that are forced into situations they don't need to be in.
GOOD LUCK ALL!
Valley Center has a hell of team!!! They look very good, and should do well the rest of the season!
OG got pounded again this week, but these kids are amazing...they never quit, I have a new found respect for every one of these kids. I hope that all of you that read and post here feel the same way!

OG has improved in academics, violence is less and these people still get to transfer why why why. The parents are ready to fight. Something needs to be done.

Even when you ASB director lets the players that quit the team go to the pep rally and boo your team(isn't a pep rally supposed to support a team) you still keep your heads up and not let it bring you down, when your player gets taken to the hospital you still go out and try and win the game. You still go out and play as hard as you can at a level that is hard to compete against. You don't quit and you gear up for the next battle I don't know how you can pull yourself up and dust off time and time again as a parent I am so proud of what you do and I know the coaches feel the same way. Keep doing the best you can we commend you hard work unlike some people.

EUHSD Travesty wrote on Oct 25, 2008 11:51 AM:EUHSD should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. This is getting completely out of hand and they are doing NOTHING about it. Deep seeded racism is the reason for all these transfer requests plain and simple. The open transfer policy should have ended as soon as OG became a distinguished school back in 2004, but nothing happened and I doubt anything will. The superintendent and school board need to act now, but allegiances with SP and EHS (the superintendent and assistant sup. were principals there) are unbalanced and this nonsense will continue. And let's set the record straight- there were more boys KICKED OFF the team recently than boys who quit. And for what? Missing practice on a minimum school day. Very tragic.
To I think you are great wrote on Oct 25, 2008 1:02 PM:Think about your statement- Have you actually, truly heard a positive statement from Plash at any time this season?
The answer to that question has been right here in black and white. Notice how far down this team has fallen since he started verbally displaying his belief and opinion of this team?
Total Disaster wrote on Oct 25, 2008 2:03 PM:I feel really bad for coach plash as I think he is a great guy. Just recently we had a Mexican principal that bailed away from OGHS as fast as he could. Teachers rebelled against him. He was trying to get the Mexican kids involved. We are back to square 1. A high percentage of OGHS is Mexican and the reality is that they don't blend well with our system. Teachers and coaches cannot relate with their students and their background. The faculty at OGHS is 95 white yet the students are 70 Latino. I hope you see the problem.
Escondido is a seriously racially divided town and it shows at their schools.

Patriot Believer wrote on Oct 25, 2008 5:02 PM:Like any football parent, you're scared to death that your kid will get hurt on the field. It's a violent sport. But to suggest that the Patriots will forfeit or blow off the last 2 games, that's crazy. These boys have too much pride and have worked too hard to lay down like that. It must be painful for these coaches to come up with something positive and inspirational but somehow Plash & his staff find a way because the kids that are out there are trying their very best until the last second. I hope that the high school board are proud of themselves because they have created this mess and have done nothing to help OG. A handful of parents can't stop the bleeding but we're trying. Shame on those kids that quit, they're old enough to make their own choices. How about staying home on Friday nights instead of showing up at the games? No excuses, you let your team down. And any adult that thinks that's okay, then shame on you too. And any school that boos their football team, well enough said. And any coach that will run up the score like that on a team that is obviously struggling, ugghh you make me sick. The guys will play for each other and their coaches, maybe even for mom & dad in the stands that support them no matter what. It's just a game, I keep telling myself.

og football has a big problem wrote on Oct 25, 2008 5:32 PM:the transfers are a big problem with orange glen. transfers are not stopped anymore they are only limited. wich does not help anything. im not sure if many people know this but players like ricky seale were supposed to go to orange glen. and seeing them struggle the way they are is sad. honestly if transfers had been stopped about 10 years ago. orange glen would most likely be a relatively decent competetive team.
and the coach at orange glen does not know how to use the talent on his team that he has. yea he doesnt have much left after he kicked a few players off. but before he only used derrick rhone as a back up when he should have been starting on offense as tailback(honestly, he is better than andrew early). not starting robert bloodgood on defense when he was defensive mvp the previous year. and also not starting chris locher on defense when he looks to be a very good player that could make tackles. the coach has a problem seeing talent when its on the field hes coaching on. he has a impressive offensive line before players were kicked off but kicking them off was his problem. he doesnt know how to utilize his players strengths. coach plash needs to be replaced.
VC Haters wrote on Oct 25, 2008 6:54 PM:As a VC supporter and parent, I can see why it is easy to hate on us. The starters were pulled midway through the second quarter but returned for the opening series in the third quarter. Why? I do not have a clue why because the game was never close. Throwing the ball up a whole bunch does not make much sense to me either. I hope our receiver dropped those on purpose. It actually turns my stomach to see that type of or lack of sportsmanship from the VC play caller. Dont bag on the kids, bag on the Offensive Coord. who calls those stupid plays. Not many welcomed him back from CSU and there have been many problems that have resulted from his return. VC kids run the plays that are called because they are threatened with their starting spots. Understand that we all have problems in our HS sports programs. OGHS has a big one that needs to be addressed. VCHS also has one that needs to be looked at. It is not the kids though and I will continue to suppport them throughout this. I pray that the injured OG player is ok.

And you people who think you know the story on the boys who planned a mutney they tried to get as many kids to follow what they were doing and it was planned the night before the practice so don't give me the story about missing one practice. When the coaches found out what was going on they had the players call them and tell them they needed to get back to practice and they would only miss one game but they never showed up and laughed at the boys who called them and that was the last time they tried to come to practice. I was a witness to what these losers tried to do to the team.

If we still believe that we, as adults, should lead by example and that our boys deserve role models to emulate shouldn't there be some constraint in what is said and done on the field, in the stands and in this forum? There is no one "true" story about the tragedy that has become Orange Glen football's legacy; everyone will believe what they want about the events of the past couple of weeks. This has all been a long time in the making, and from the looks of it, isn't going away anytime soon. You should be ashamed of yourselves for not supporting their efforts. I have had the chance to work with these coaches on many projects, fundraisers to raise money so the kids have the much needed safety equipment that hasn't been upgraded in years and he has done a good job in a very short time because he wants everything top notch for our kids. They try to stay postive about everything but it is really hard when you continue to put them down week after week. Remember Rome wasn't built in a day maybe you should join in and help make things better for the future. These coaches care about our kids as much as they do their own. I now have kids at VC but I don't think that O'side is being very sportsman like. Who cares if you have only won game they are out there doing it. Takes guts!!! But you don't start telling a team that you are going to have your starters out by 2nd quarter and that there will be so many points on the board. But I could not believe what I am reading, we have people bashing one team for scoring and then people saying that Orange Glen should just forfiet the rest of their games. I believe that both comments are wrong. We are no longer in Pee Wees where every player has to get so much play time and that it has to be fair for all players. We have stepped up a level to where this is a competition. To ask one team to stop playing with all their heart is like asking the other to just give up. Maybe some of you like the teams or you don't. But lets not for get that if we are all given the chance wouldn't we rather win. I know I would and I am sure that the Patriots would love to come away with a huge win. I really hope that for these guys the can have just one to say look what we did. Member of OG ASB wrote on Oct 28, 2008 11:27 AM:Ok, I feel as if some things need to be cleared up first.
I agree that this was definitely not the best pep rally we have had. Part of that fact can be attributed to the fact of being handed down a manufactured rivalry that we were required to pump up. It was, for all intents and purposes, mandated that we base this rally around our football team. Unfortunately, we do have a losing team, and one that is losing members, and was going up against a fairly strong football team. No one believed the premise that this rally was based on, which is completely understandable. The students didn't, and I don't think the administration really believed in it. The football team and coaching staff didn't even believe in it. They were acting as if they KNEW they were going to get killed that night. As they were introduced, using only positive terms, they proceeded to WALK out onto the floor, eyes down, marching to a slow cadence; a death march. They were already defeated. There was nothing in them; there was no spark, there was no spirit. I personally heard the crowd go from cheering to silence. We were not aware that we were going to be introducing a dead team, but even if we had, we wouldn't have been able to do anything about it. It is also pertinent to note that it was members of the student body that booed the football team, not the ASB. While we do what we can to raise school spirit, there is only so much one can do to try to get students to believe in a football team that doesn't believe in themselves.
Please do not take this in an entirely negative manner. We do support our football team, and many of the football team members are friends of mine, and are in ASB. I am very proud of the amount of work they always give, and what they do every Friday night. However, to say that it is entirely the ASB's fault, as if we can do anything to boost our football team's record at a time like this, is not only ignorant, but hurtful to the many members of ASB that put hours upon hours into making these Pep Rallies work.
As I previously stated, this was a rally based purely on the manufactured rivalry of aptly titled "Backyard Bash." Were there ways we could have improved it? Of course. Would we have been able to change how the football team was received? Personally, I don't believe so.
We do what we can to improve the school as a whole, and try to maintain spirit for the SCHOOL, not just the football team. Please do not fall into the trap of believing that the school is based around the football team, or any sport for that matter. We have an amazing campus, great students, and terrific teachers. We may not have a winning football team, but I would not trade the campus, and especially the student body, for any other in the area.
Sincerely,
A humble ASB member of the great school of Orange Glen High.

I would love to see a joint game between the two schools though where both teams offense joined together against both defense. I think that it would go along way for each school to understand the other. In this time of war we need to try and pull our country together and the best place to start is with our youth. I think that there has been alot of missunderstanding going on here. People are passionate and you do tend to get defenseive when you feel that your kids, your team or you school get attacked. OGASB-Member wrote on Oct 28, 2008 10:18 PM:There was silence from some, there was booing from others. Again, I must stress that this was not some insidious plot from ASB to boo the football team, it was the crowd reacting negatively to what was happening. We can not control the entire crowd, that just isn't feasible. If you must know, Mrs. T. also tried to quiet down those that were booing in the crowd. I am a first-hand witness, I heard her specifically denounce those that were booing. I guess the rally could have ended there, but would that have been a good ending? The crowd booing, and everyone being kicked out?
There is no reason to attack ASB for the crowd's behavior though. We did whatever there was to be done, and I believe they were announced along the lines of "These guys have been working hard every single day since last spring. They have been giving their hearts to the game, and have been giving their absolute all every single Friday for us. Let's give a great welcome to our Orange Glen Patriot Football Team!!!!!" How can that be construed negatively? We talked about the effort they have put in for us, and the blood and sweat they give us... How can that be the cause of the crowd's booing?
The main concern I am currently seeing, is that many believe that it actually was ASB's doing that created the booing. I did not personally see "the cows" booing, but I am also well aware that it seemed to be an entire class of students that was booing. It is in no way possible for the two kids that are being accused to have created the volume and magnitude of booing.
And no, the accusation that I am Mrs. T. is just silly. Just because I actually have the ability to articulate my position in a reasonable manner doesn't mean that I am instantly a former English teacher. Thank you though, I will take that as a compliment.
And I am in no way supporting the actions of those crowd members, I am merely defending ASB from the baseless claims (for the most part. I will see how true the claims are that the cows were indeed the ones that started the booing) that are being hurled at us.
I, too, believe that the bickering should end though. We are one school, and this was an isolated incident. I realize there are bound to be frustrated parents and players, but a group of kids that are just there to try to create school spirit and run a pep rally as best we can, is not the correct target for that.

We are going on and on about the booing that was done at the pep rally which was VERY WRONG, but what you all do not realize is you do this to your band all of the time. This group of kids work just as hard as your football team and get no respect at all. No one pays attention when they are playing and most just get up and leave. Do any of you ask how they did at their competition over the weekend. When I was a Patriot we were a big band and got no respect. We all need to realize that it is not only our athletes that need our support but all of our student body. Pep Rallies for football. How about a celebration for Band or how about the debate team if anyone still has those. Does anyone know how your FFA did at the fair this year? Take the time teachers and staff as well show all of your students that everything that goes on at your school is important and you will be amazed at how Patriot Pride will increase. This goes for all schools let show all of our students that even though they may not be athletes that they are important to our school.
OBSERVATION wrote on Oct 29, 2008 11:24 AM:I seriously can't believe what is happening to OG since Mr. Ochoa left. It has not even been one year since he left and look at all of you. The school is totally falling apart. I am sure if he read these posts he would be so disappointed in all of you. Last year OG was not a winning school and they had the VC rivalry and this did not happen. I think that there are way too many alumni at OG trying to relive the years that they attended the school.
Have any of you thought maybe shifting gears into a different focus??? OG has an awesome soccer team, why don't we forget about being a winning football team and concentrate on being an awesome soccer team. Come on what is seriously wrong with that? Nothing, those poor kids work hard and win and nobody gives them pep rallies or credit for what they do. Instead you all are hung up on being the best foot ball team. Face it that will more than likely not happen.. SO, let me as you this, if your child was not good and something would you force him to keep doing it and put him down or would you support what they are good at?
No difference here folks, support your students children and the OG kids at what they are good at... soccer and other sports.
No, I do not have a football player or a soccer player just merely observing!
ASB, why not try to lead the group in doing this and support the other team sports just as much you do football and maybe leading with example will help in this instance.
GO OG SOCCER!

VC will try their best against Oceanside and hopefully pull through and win. GO VC!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to say that these aren't good people, just saying they may not hold the same standards as students and parents of those students 10-15 years ago. Many things are the cause for this, one that really stands out is how the school board has made OG a dumping ground for so many years by letting the more affluent students transfer out to SP and the athletic students transfer to ESCO. As much as nobody wants to hear this it's a fact; OG get's the scraps the left overs. I care about the OG players and student body, but the moral is very low at the school and it probably won't change until things start turning around.
Look we're not a football school, maybe we were back when the coaches played but that's history. Maybe what we need is a new direction, stop trying to live in the past or bring back those glory days, it's not going to happen. The majority of the school is Latino, probably not the biggest kids out there, compared to the Indian players at VC or the Samoans of OC, we all know this. Let's focus on sports that we do better in, soccer, baseball etc. I love football as much as the next guy but getting down on our kids is not helping matters.
If you really want to make a difference, volunteer. If you want to make a change the school board members are up for election next week, go out and vote them out and someone new in. Change starts here with us. So stop complaining and do something about it!

Everyone of the VC football players took a knee once it was realized that the player was not getting up, during the time the ref went over as well as the trainers and coaches. This is honorable and expected of the boys. No one says anything about Oceanside beating Mt. Carmel by as much as they did.
We are a small high school and therefore have less players on our sideline (our line is "not as deep as other big school teams)- we put our "other string players" in the game after 1st quarter.
We actually (as a school) cheerleaders, students and parents were very concerned, worried and even some "were hoping, praying together or eyes were teary" while thinking the injured player may have been hurt seriously.( I admit it was not recognized right away by the fans that "there was actually a player down" - Pop Warner cheerleaders were visiting and youth were performing for many of their families. We all discussed OG's tenacity and honor (especially the coaches and the team leaders - the dependable seniors - at "how they play and never give up " even in difficult circumstances (maybe missing senior players).
The stands and the cheerleaders all clapped and cheered for him as he was put into the Paramedic vehicle, and he waved to all of us... we were so releived.
Furthermore as a team the boys prayed after the game for the player who many of us actually knew (we are neighbors) Felix.

VCbelle luv 6 wrote on Oct 29, 2008 4:19 PM:ok so for all you hating on VC out there, consider this; Valley Center is a small school we have less than 1300 kinds in all 4 grades, thats about half the size of most teams in our league. so we have a limited choice when it comes to football guys, and yes coach Gilster did play the starters for most of the game, and got us up by a substancial amount of points, but what would you all be saying if we had only beat OG by 14 points?? i think there would b some more rude coments about our chances againt oceanside. And about going for the extrs points, have you ever thought tht maybe the boys wanted the practice, they rarely have that opportunity in most games, maybe it was a learning expirience. I happen to know that Coach Gilster is a very honest guy and would never do something just to say that we killed OG. he was proboably trying to keep up the momentum for the next two games. After all it is OG, which has been VC's rival ever since our school was founded in 1997. So wouldn't you want to cream your rivals. I think so. Yes it is sad that OG cant get together a good program but why does VC care about that?? and for the record i am very proud of our VC boys!!! go get 'em against Ramona and Oceanside!!! we love you boys!! go jaguars!!!

But I do think that you need to check somethings out before you start commenting. VC is not an all Indian school like you seem to think. Yes we do have alot and they are all great kids but no bigger then the other kids and not all on the football team. We have boys of all ethnic backgrounds. I think if you looked you would see that most of our kids are just as big as OG's. It does not take size to be a good player or team. My son is smaller then a good majority of his team mates but can tackle guys alot bigger then him. It is the size of your heart and OG's players have big ones. I hope that they know that even though there are those that put them down, there are those of us that would like to help lift them up. Keep up the hard work it does pay off. If not on the playing field in life.

Let your team come out and play hard and have a good game that is what it takes to show how good. Not how well you trash talk another team.
soon to be former OG student wrote on Oct 29, 2008 5:02 PM:I have now sat here for about an hour and a half reading all of these blogs. Being a supporter of OG football and an ASB member, I feel I need to say a few things.
I want the football team (those of you that weren't kicked off or who quit) to know that I have so much respect for you all. You boys have had a tough season and you never give up. I know you haven’t received all the support that you deserve. But blaming all of ASB (especially Mrs. Turrentine) is NOT the answer. I really don’t want this to be taken the wrong way. I will be the first to say that booing your own schools football team is unjustified and pathetic. To all of you that booed, you should be ashamed, you are the ones destroying our schools spirit. I do think that someone needs to say something or talk to the boys that were kicked off the football team. I know that some of these boys booed their former team (they know who you are). There is probably more to the story then I know, but in my opinion, I think they gave up on the team, or in their own words “DGAF”. Missing one practice doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it’s disrespectful to your team. You let them down. It’s not funny anymore. Grow up and be respectful. Stop giving ASB and Mrs. T a bad name. I really just want everyone to know that the true ASB members really do support the football team. Mrs. T and a group of ASB members ALWAYS go support the football players at their games on Friday nights. We can’t control the former football players who booed or the other students that booed. I had to say something because it bothers me to hear people bash Mrs. T and ASB. I know ASB is only a class, but most people don’t see or realize how many extra hours some of us spend trying to make school events better and/or boost school spirit. Enough is enough. Changes need to be made. People need to stop blaming the wrong people and others need to take responsibility for their actions. Our football team is going through a hard time, but that is not Coach Plash’s fault. He is trying to rebuild the football program. Like Coach Plash is rebuilding the football program, Mrs. Turrentine is rebuilding the ASB class. So please, let us all move forward and support each other. Students, Teachers, Principles, Parents, and the rest of the faculty need to join together and fight to restore the pride and school spirit at Orange Glen.
Remember to Vote. :)

We play hard football against any team we face, whether it be OG or Oside. We felt bad to see the OG players that actually have something invested tin the season have it smashed in their faces. ANd as for Oside being this classy amazing invincible team, you need to open your eyes. Go read some other comments left on other articles. Maybe it will change your mind. they are high school kids and they are not perfect. WE will play our best and you will see.
valleycenterjag wrote on Oct 29, 2008 5:52 PM:As a VCHS student I know how hard our football team works and how respectful they all are. They take their game seriously and have benefited from their effort. We have three CIF titles, one D-3 and two D-4. Sorry that we aren't a D-1 school but not everyone can be. We have a very small student body but we do the best with what we have. Our players don't go around talking trash about other teams even though they get nasty things said to them and about them all the time. We have been the butt of Orange Glen's jokes ever since our school was founded and now they can't handle the fact that we demolish them just like every other school in the county. OG's football team will improve, every school has ups and downs; it's not our fault that we are a good team and are having a good season. As to all the Oceanside players, OG parents, etc who are badmouthing Valley Center and saying that we have no class, you should really look at who's talking. Your comment only prove that you are the ones with no class. Everyone wants to be proud of their team and there is nothing wrong with that but remember it is only high school football. Congrats to all my VC boys on your win and a great season so far. The best of luck against Ramona and Oceanside. Win or lose VC will play hard and show that not only are they a team with respect but a team to be respected.

people forget about O-side focus on SM....2 very similar situations as far as their football programs....both trying to turn the corner..Honestly this is the most important game of the season for both teams.. If OG (as they probably will) gets blown out I mean what other options are there??? It will be very telling of where OG really is as a football program

Dont tell me give him more time if Ochoa was still around he would get ride of coach Plash after the season. Many will argue but please list one thing: gpa does not count when you only have 17 kids it should be easy to keep the eligable. Where is og headed? I don't think you really want the answer, get some new blood that has head coaching experience go out of state to find someone. This IS SO CAL who would not want to come here.

They have had a 99% attendance throughout the summer the kids that are here are committed to the program and they are lifting more than in the past. They are trying to make football players out of boys who have never played a day of football before high school what do you expect most of the teams have had kids in pop warner for years and they know a lot about football. My son is one of those boys who never played football but he is out there everyday working to be better and he has bought into Coach Plashes program and wouldn't want to go any place else. He has been at the school 1 1/2 and has been very successful in fundraising to buy the players new helmets, pads, and several other things to make this a top notch program like SP and Esco have and from what I can see and you can ask other parents he has came a long way. And he has also made the kids commit to keeping their grades up. I know you don't care about the grades but he is trying to take things in the right direction. If you are a retired coach why don't you come down and give him some help we can never have to much help maybe you can teach him a thing or two. What was your record.

Maybe they are and maybe they are not. BTW, nobody is talking about Oside winning 59-14 bacause they pulled their starters at the half and weren't throwing it on fourth down late in the game to first string players, not to mention, they only have about thriry guys on the team.

I can tell you from first hand experience some of these volunteers and coaches have ruined it for a lot of kids who have had bad experiences playing football or baseball etc...They quit playing sports period. It starts in the community. Has much as people want to help, volunteer coach at OG and the community there is still a state of mind with the sports programs that is negative. First off none of the coaches whether its in football, baseball etc.. Do not want any advise from anyone outside. Instead of opening up to new ideas and try things different. They stay on the same path
of losing programs. Until these people are removed it will be the same old tune.

OG Parent wrote on Oct 30, 2008 11:47 AM:I have to agree; the coaches have their hearts in the right place but are not willing to listen to outside experience. Example, OG had a former Pro football player who coaches for the Chargers, this coach worked for OG for 7 months. OG wins their first game they play and “poof” the professional coach is gone. What happened to him? The coaching staff let him go because they "didn't agree with his coaching methods". What a bunch of bull. Maybe they should have listened to him a little bit longer. I’m not saying he was the reason they won the game, but this program has turned into a club of alumni’s running things from the top down. Most of the coaches are former OG players; do they really have the experience needed to coach high school players? Coaching is a lot different than playing.
The system doesn’t work and needs to be scrapped. We need to start from scratch with experienced, seasoned and proven track record coaching staff. I agree with a lot of parents out their, our coaches work hard and give a lot to the school; but if you want to win, if that’s what’s important than you must go a different direction. Winning takes a lot of sacrifice and that may mean changing a lot of things, including coaches.
I wonder wrote on Oct 30, 2008 1:04 PM:How many coaches has OG had since vc opened? How many winning seasons have they had? How much experience did the previous coaches have? Would have he kept the kids on the team if they planned ahead to miss practice? I relly wonder.

Or Maybe setting one up up the admin at your school. Give your coaches a chance. Are you going to tell these boys that they can't play because they aren't winning like you want. I don't think so.
