CHARGERS: Brees leads Saints over Bolts in London

The Chargers and the New Orleans Saints delivered.
Drew Brees went 30-for-41 for 339 yards and three touchdown passes against his former team to lead the Saints to a 37-32 win over the Chargers, dropping them to 3-5.
The Saints (4-4) held off a late comeback by the Chargers, who came from 37-20 down early in the fourth quarter and were driving for the tying touchdown when linebacker Jonathan Vilma picked off a pass by Philip Rivers with just over a minute to go. Brees took a safety in the final seconds to complete the scoring.
Last year, the New York Giants slogged to a 13-10 win over the Miami Dolphins in London on a rain-soaked field. This time, 83,226 fans at England's showcase venue witnessed high-scoring, offensive football at its best ---- with a furious finish to boot.
The game turned into a shootout between Brees and Rivers, his former backup in San Diego, as both teams had more than 400 yards of offense.
Brees, who played his first five seasons for the Chargers before signing as a free agent with New Orleans before the 2006 season, faced his former teammates for the first time.
"This game was not about me proving a point or proving anybody wrong or saying they shouldn't have let me go," Brees said. "We beat a very good team today that needed a victory as badly as we did."
The Saints bounced back from last week's loss to the Panthers and coped just fine without star back Reggie Bush, who underwent surgery on his injured left knee earlier this week.
"It was an important win," coach Sean Payton said. "I thought our players did a good job of handling some of the distractions, and some of the things that come up after a tough loss, and certainly the injuries. We were able to put that aside and still play a good team and get a win today, and that's encouraging."
The Chargers' defense never found a way to contain Brees. Coming into the game leading the NFL with 2,224 yards passing, Brees exploited the Chargers' vulnerable secondary.
"We really just opened up the playbook today and called all the things we feel good about," he said.
But Rivers came up with big numbers, too, completing 25 of 40 attempts for 341 yards and three touchdowns to bring his season total to 19 TDs. But while Brees went without an interception, Rivers' one pick on a late drive proved crucial.
"The whole experience was a lot of fun, except the outcome of the game," Rivers said. "It's a tough one to swallow, and 3-5 with a 13-hour flight ahead of us doesn't make it any better."
The Chargers also got a big game from LaDainian Tomlinson, who shrugged off a recent toe injury to rush for 105 yards on 19 carries and catch a touchdown pass. It was only his second 100-yard effort in 12 games, and the 47th of his career.
But it was Brees' performance that Tomlinson wanted to talk about.
"I was sitting on the sideline watching him working his magic, and I kept on just thinking 'When is he going to miss one?' " Tomlinson said.
The Chargers, who trail Denver (4-3) in the AFC West, go home for a bye week.
"I think mentally and physically that will help us," Chargers coach Norv Turner said. "We have an eight-game season coming up. We'll get back and get ready for that."
New Orleans running back Deuce McAllister, starting in place of Bush and playing in the shadow of a reported recent positive drug test, ran for 55 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.
The Chargers hurt themselves with penalties, getting flagged 14 times for 134 yards. They also had a touchdown called back by a penalty and what looked like a 73-yard touchdown pass went through the hands of Vincent Jackson on their opening drive of the second half.
The Saints were the "home" team, and the London crowd responded by giving them loud support and waving black New Orleans pennants.
After last year's muddy mess, there were fears that London's notorious wet weather could ruin things again. There was a steady rain Sunday morning and early afternoon, but the showers ended by game time. The field was slippery and torn up in places, but not enough to stop these two high-powered offenses.
After the teams traded field goals in the first quarter, they scored 34 points in the second quarter. Brees threw TD passes to Devery Henderson (12 yards) and Lance Moore (30 yards), while Rivers responded with 12-yard scoring throws to Tomlinson and Antonio Gates. McAllister had a 1-yard TD run as the Saints led 23-17 at halftime.
The Saints went up 30-17 in the third quarter on Brees' 1-yard pass to Mark Campbell. Rivers had a 5-yard TD pass to Brandon Manumaleuna negated when guard Kris Dielman was flagged for holding. The Chargers settled for a 24-yard field goal by Nate Kaeding, making it 30-20.
Mike Carney went over from 1 yard to make it 37-20 for the Saints. After a 31-yard field goal by Kaeding, the Chargers recovered an onside kick and Rivers threw a 14-yard TD pass to Jackson with 7:29 to play to get within a touchdown.
On the next drive, Brees appeared to have a pass intercepted by Eric Weddle, who stepped in front of Billy Miller. After a review, however, it was ruled that Weddle did not have control of the ball when he hit the ground.

Can anybody say coaching? No sacks? AJ, bite your ego and fire Cottrell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BoltBacker65 wrote on Oct 26, 2008 6:59 PM:Again, it looks like the Chargers let us down again on the national scene. They go to London and goof up in front of the Brits, sad. How long can a team expect its fan base to accept sub-standard play? These Chargers have displayed erratic and pathetic on field execution vs. the Saints. These are paid professionals. Not sure if that means that they’re all that smart...most are just athletes (not rocket scientists), I guess. There were enough lapses in judgment with just plain stupid, boneheaded acts.
The Bolts were flagged for penalties at crucial times. On offense, just when they needed yards, they got called for a penalty and got backed up.....holding and illegal formation. Turnovers did them in, again (take away the Sproles fumble and you knock off 7 points from the Saints score total). And Rivers just has to force it, doesn’t he? I’m not sold that he’s as good as he’s been given credit. And who is at fault for those passes to LT that sailed behind? The Bolts exhibited just plain crappy execution.
And on D and special teams, the excessive celebration by Eric Weddle really hurt the Chargers especially after his INT was challenged and over ruled. Instead of the Saints getting the ball with 1st and 25, they got the ball with 1st and 10. Dumb, dumb, dumb. That late hit penalty by McNeill didn’t help the Bolts’ cause. Also, the D rush was not there. Brees was hardly hurried and had time to slice and dice and move the ball down field. The Saints converted on third every time until the 4th quarter, not a good showing for our vaunted D.
And why does Norv insist on FGs in the red zone? In my opinion, a field goal is a coach saying to his team and the fans that he’s not confident that his offense is capable of scoring a TD or maybe he’s not confident in his own ability to make the right call and he’d rather settle for the easy points, better safe than sorry. I think the Chargers team is like a thorough bred race horse. You have to push it for it kick up the pace and win the race. Instead, that race horse is reined in and slowed down just enough to round the track and cross the finish...albeit an also ran outside the winner’s circle.
As for the Saints, Brees did carve up the Bolts’ D like a Thanksgiving Day turkey. Also, just like with the Buffalo game, you have to give it the hungrier team (in this case the Saints), they wanted this game more and so they won. In all fairness, I had given Norv the benefit of the doubt to make something happen, after all, he is supposed to know the game and has experience with winning programs (2 SBs with Cowboys). Unfortunately, at this point so far he’s not proven that things are improving on the field. He’s shown his colors as he did with the Redskins and Raiders.
AJ got a bargain with Norv. And we all know that you get what you pay for. Spend less and settle for mediocrity and you’ll get sub-standard product. Norv Turner is an offensive coordinator not a head coach. I think once, he accepts that fact and AJ realizes his mistake in hiring Norv, we’ll all be better for it. At this point in the season, it’s too late to change leadership. We bought a bill of goods and we have a whole season to deal with it. I’m sure the band wagon has started to empty. If the Bolts lose half of their remaining games, the wheels will have totally come off of the band wagon and then we’ll just have a band sled. I hope this doesn’t happen. If it does, I’ll have to start going back to church. Go Bolts
BoltBacker65 wrote on Oct 26, 2008 7:00 PM:Seems the Chargers are cozying up to mediocrity this season. It’s not that they’re bad. They’ve been in every game. Every loss has been fairly close with each loss having something to do with the Chargers goofing up somewhere during the game. That is what makes this season so difficult to watch.
Didn’t the Chargers have a losing season in the recent past in the 1990s or maybe late 80s when they were in every game and even had the lead only to give it up somewhere in the second half? Anyone remember that? This season seems to parallel that one. Maybe we should take Barack Obama’s lead and insist on change!! Go Bolts!
BoltBacker65 wrote on Oct 26, 2008 7:09 PM:It seems so typical of Norv that he had Chambers play coming of the injury instead of leaving Malcolm Floyd in. Floyd has been studly and should've started. So it's the usual...bench the guy who is doing great and quite possibly may have had another stellar game. So be it. Norv doesn't know his team as well as he should. So many weapons in the arsenal yet he continues to stick to the method. Aaargggh!

Mixing up the "man" D would help a lot.
Seeing stupid penalties shows a total lack of discipline. . .(hear that, Applewhite?) Got coaching?
The good news is that our offense is formidable just like Dan Fouts' offenses. Our key players are now healthy, we have a bye week. . .and the rest of the schedule is doable. ..if the defense can adjust and not get outcoached in the first half.
Not under Cottrell, however.

With the bye week coming up its time to discard TC and turn things around. There is still hope for the playoffs. so dont jump too soon "die hard" chargers fans.

Sad and frustrating, knowing there is nothing you can do, but ever hopeful of some miraculous recovery. Usually the protocol is the remove the cancer. I'd start with a biopsy of Ted Cotrell. I think you will find him malignant. If that doesn't work, keep cutting until all of the cancer is removed and the healing can begin.
Ric in Delaware wrote on Oct 27, 2008 7:39 AM:There is no substitute for leadership. Norv doesn't have it,never did , he has been an absolute failure as a head coach wherever he has been. Troy Aikman can sing his praises until the twelth of never and he still won't be a head coach. I gaurantee in the press conference in San Diego we will here the same old regurgitated crap about how he was proud how they fought back,ETC ETC ETC, with a liberal amount of excuses sprinkled in.I am not going to put this on Cottrell because if Norv had any spine at all he would have told AJ no way when he told him who his DC was going to be. But just like any faithful lapdog yes man, Norv said ok to the EGO MANIACAL CONTROL FREAK . Of course now we the fans are paying the price. Even the players are into the act now of NORV SPEAK. We have to fix this, we have to correct that, and we will get it done. BBBBBBBBBBBBBSSSSSSSSSSSS.Now we have to listen to the crap about the bye coming at the perfect time,so we can get ready for the eight game season. HAY NORV YOU COULD BE OFF FOR THE NEXT HALF CENTURY AND COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO LEAD MEN OR PREPARE A TEAM.Looking at the last eight games I see a mininmum of four that ,the way this team is playing, they don't have a shot of winning. That would put the record at 7-9.I take solace in just one UNDISPUTABLE FACT. Sooner or later AJ, you are going to have to stand in front of a press conference, eat 100 lbs. of crow and announce you fired Turner. It is inevitable as the sun coming up each morning. Its just a shame that your ego will probably make you wait to keep you from doing it until it's too late. Or maybe Dean Spanos will find the courage to stand up to you and make you pull the trigger[which I seriously doubt].Until then ,we the fans will have to suffer the consequences of watching a supremely talented team playing down to the level of it's head coach. The one person I feel truly sorry for is Mr. Alex Spanos, a truly loving, caring ,generous man,who I beleive in his heart only wants the best for the fans of the Chargers. He deserves better then what his son and AJ are doing.

AJ is to blame for this mess and will be until someone (the owners) ask him what he was thinking? Norv got to and through the play-offs last year with Marty's team and luck. Where is our D? Merrieman is one guy. Hate to say it but AJ got rid of the best cover/tackling middle LB (Donnie) and replaced him with lacky Wilhelm. Sorry AJ but you are not the genuis when it comes to your super-sized ego. Well I am saying 8-8 now people. Oh and Turner the Burner is coming to town to toast us in 5 weeks, another mistake???
NorCal Charger wrote on Oct 27, 2008 10:11 AM:What has happened to "Crow-martie"? he and over rated Jammer are showing they cannot cover anyone this year. I guess the 10 INT's were a fluke. So much for the goal of 15 INT's...Teddy C is the worst person on the Chargers since Ryan Leaf and that's scary. It appears AJ and the rest of the front office do not care about this season. The team was so high on the "great LB's" we supposedly have/had, well, except Merriman, the rest are college quality at best. Jyles Tucker "stole' money from us because he had one good game last year against the Rayduzz? They could have brought back Junior for a fraction of the money and he would do 100X better than Tucker. What a wasted season for us fans, now we have to wait for the Padres to take the field in the Spring? With Peavy leaving, SD sports are rapidly becoming the laughing stock of Pro sports.

James wrote on Oct 27, 2008 2:17 PM:Who are you, "Where Are You"? I'm right here. Denver Hat? Who is this are you an Faider Fan or a Donkey Fan?
Who's done? The Chargers play in the worst division in the league. The Raiders and Chiefs are non-factors. And if you think the Donkey's are gonna beat the Dolphins your delusional...That Donkey defense against the wildcat and an accurate Pennington holding the ball all game. So coming out of the buy more than likely Chargers will be down one game and still get the Donkeys at home with the Bolts playing more home games than the Donkeys.
The Chargers aren't good right now and neither are the Donkeys. But in the end the Bolts will get things fixed and edge out the Donkeys and once the playoffs come around we'll see if they shut the doubters up like last year. The Chargers D can get better but the Donkeys have a bigger problem on D...they are not big enough nor are they good enough to stop the run which will limit the offensive possessions. The Chargers have been in every game and The Donkeys have been hammered and received some "divine" intervention.
So while no one in this division should be proud of the way their teams are playing in the end the Bolts will be the team.

Beating NE was meaningless. After being accused of being a hater and nothing more, I have now been vindicated. Your defense has major problems that go far beyond coaching and this game showed that in the light of day.
Norv Turner?
Its not like nobody told you this.
We were right and we knew it.
But he had never had this much talent remember?
What talent?
This team is getting old and the window is slammed shut.
So much for dynasties and SB wins.
Jimbo wrote on Oct 27, 2008 5:19 PM:Brees wins...Chargers lose. It's clearly a leadership problem and it starts at the very top with AJ and Spanos. The Chargers reflect Norv's losing attitude and the team does not respect Rivers. Even LT only wanted to talk about Brees. He still wishes he had Brees back on the team so he could get rid of Rivers. It's very clear now save for a few, like James, who have yet to wake up and smell the coffee.
Take a pill of this wrote on Oct 27, 2008 7:49 PM:NORVACAIN:
Pronunciation: NOR-VA-CAIN
Norvacain is a fast working drug. Norvacain is injected into the heart of a football team in an attempt to replace a Motivational Coach with an Offensive Coordinator with the intensity of a librarian. Though it may be worth trying, this injection alone is enough to make Fans nervous about any football game where player intensity may be required. The risk is that usually one season of Norvacain could potentially be dangerous to the health of the team by numbing the team for the duration of any football Championship window.
Along with its known effects, Norvacain may cause some unwanted effects, such as ,passive, unmotivated play, lack of focus and intensity, fatigue, playing under players potential, demise of leadership, breakdown of the team unit, loss of team character, emotionless and unprepared gameplanning, becoming injury prone.
Team Captains will attempt to call team meetings in an effort to bolster the troops in an effort to ward off this invasion, however, continued exposure to the Norvacain soon proves fatal to the Team chemistry and players frustration soon begin to fester.
Early warning signs are when the Defensive Captain states:
It took me a while,” Merriman conceded Monday. “I kind of get rowdy, get up for a game by yelling and screaming and everything else, and Norv wasn’t like that.” He added, “I’m waiting to hear him tell me to get up and run through that wall over there, and it never happened.”
Fans being exposed to literally watching their team transition from being a perennial Championship team to a team best remembered for playing at a waterpark, soon experience any of the following side affects,
loss of Appetite, high blood Pressure, Bluish lips and fingernails; breathing problems; chest pain; convulsions (seizures); dizziness; drowsiness; fatigue; fever; headache; irregular heartbeat; itching; nausea and/or vomiting; pale skin; raised red swellings on the skin lips tongue or in the throat; rapid heart rate; restlessness; unusual tiredness or weakness; Back pain; constipation; difficulty in opening the mouth; inability to hold bowel movement and/or urine; loss of sexual function; paralysis of legs; persistent numbness; prolonged numbness or tingling of lips and mouth; shivering; skin rash; tingling or pins and needles sensation.
