Elect Jim Oenning and Michele Bain
The Liberty Quarry proposal may become one of the largest quality-of-life issues facing the greater Fallbrook area. Jim Oenning is currently chairman of the Fallbrook Community Planning Group’s Liberty Quarry Sub-Committee and has selflessly dedicated several hundred hours to this research and evaluation. Oenning should be applauded for this commitment and to all other FCPG concerns. Please re-elect Oenning to the FCPG.
Michele Bain will bring to the FCPG an unbiased integrity and candor in seeking out and delivering community goals. She has earned the endorsements of both local candidates Grey Frandsen, state Assembly District 66, and Bob Hamilton, 49th Congressional District. Please elect Bain to the FCPG.

Fire victim supports Ed Gallo for council
We lost our home in last October’s firestorm, and we support Ed Gallo for City Council. He is working to the best of his ability to balance the needs of Escondido in these trying times.
Some members of the firefighters union are against him, but they need to focus the blame on San Diego County Board of Supervisors, who control the funds from Proposition 172; this board continues to act against the best interests of the entire county!

The nexus of terrorism and economics
The coming presidential election has narrowed to two basic themes: for the Republican candidate, it’s terrorism; for his rival, it’s economics.
In the past election, Americans chose terrorism as their fear du jour, but today it is the economy. But are those threats really so different? ... One might almost think that the present administration, aided and abetted by a seemingly imaginary Congress, is doing the work of Osama bin Laden. Was it not bin Laden, after all, whose primary goal was to destroy the U.S. economy? Seven years later, has he not achieved victory? ...
No institution put in place by this government saw this economic disaster coming. After 9/11, the administration slashed the FBI’s criminal investigation unit, shifting 1,800 jobs to terrorism functions without funding their replacements. It left the agency incapable of investigating and fighting white-collar crime, enabling the economy to unfold accordingly. Was it intentional? Perhaps.
What does it say for free-market capitalism? Besides the obvious –– that unbridled greed will destroy capitalism –– Bush had been telling us that all along, by handing out no-bid contracts to political supporters. Ultimately, the terrorism that affects most Americans is economic.

Elect a new majority for Oceanside
Charles “Chuck” Lowery, a candidate for the Oceanside City Council, knows how to run a business, and he needs to be elected to the council to bring about some fiscal responsibility, which has been sorely lacking by the present majority on the council.
Not only is Chuck a lifelong resident of Oceanside who cares about its issues, he has been the 21-year owner of a business in Oceanside with nationwide distribution. He will be a watchdog to avoid wasteful spending by the council and will attempt to bring federal money to Oceanside to augment our city coffers.
We need a new majority on the council –– Chuck Lowery, Mayor Jim Wood and Esther Sanchez –– to form a team that will bring revenue into our city through wise development. Unlike the present majority, they are not in the pockets of developers and special interests who want a concrete plant near a creek and asphalt plants near neighborhoods and in El Corazon.

Prop. N protects San Marcos’ ridgelines
By voting yes on Proposition N on Nov. 4, San Marcos citizens have the opportunity to preserve and protect several significant natural ridgelines surrounding their city. A no vote would allow a future council to overturn the current Ridgeline Protection Ordinance and allow more development.
Seven years ago, San Elijo Hills proposed a ridgeline golf course that would have resulted in serious environmental degradation, including bulldozing the top of Cerro de las Posas, San Marcos’ most prominent ridgeline. Concerned citizens joined in a campaign to limit major alteration of the ridgeline. Unfortunately, a road was cut in across the face of Double Peak and a water tank installed.
Not long after that development, the City Council appointed a task force to create a ridgeline protection ordinance. The council approved the ordinance. However, a new council majority could overturn it. With approval of Prop. N, any major ridgeline development would require voter approval.
Mountain ridgelines define San Marcos and are worthy of protection. ... A yes vote on Prop. N is the best way to protect San Marcos’ priceless natural resources.

Political ads don’t have to be honest
As this very important election draws near, the campaigns with the most money will be bringing out their big guns, and spending everything in an effort to garner your vote.
However, one of the most important things about political advertising is generally unknown, so I wanted to make sure that there was at least one mention of it in these columns before Election Day: The laws that require honesty in advertising don’t apply to political advertising, as that is protected speech. If a party, or candidate, or political action committee, went on the air with ads saying that their opponent had been a known child molester and drug addict since the age of 6, and responsible for all the unsolved murders in their hometown for 20 years, there is nothing that anyone, from the station to the person mentioned, could do about it.
I heard an ad on the radio that referred to male bovine droppings, and although I would have considered that obscene, since it was protected speech, the network had to run it. So, beware of political ads –– they don’t need to be honest! And don’t forget to vote!

Proposition 8 is un-American
Proposition 8, the proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage for all Californians, is based on ignorance and intolerance, while fundamentally rejecting our deep American value of equality for all.
In medicine, doctors stopped diagnosing homosexuality a disease in the 1970s because of its genetic basis, one of many aspects in our vast spectrum of human sexuality. It occurs at a similar rate of incidence as left-handedness. Who would propose that society discriminate again those who are born left-handed? I’m sure it is only a matter of time before science definitively identifies this trait on the human genome, settling once and for all ... that homosexuality is not a choice!
Our country was founded in part for the principle of freedom of religion. Each faith and congregation can choose for itself whether to offer the sacrament of marriage to its parishioners or not. Currently some faiths choose to offer same-sex marriage to their members, while others are strongly against it. I would fight for the right for all religions to make this choice, and I will fight those who want to impose their religious convictions upon others with different religions or different social views. ...
I encourage all to vote “no” on Prop. 8 and protect our sacred American freedoms for all.

Abed deserves our votes
For the past 26 years, I have resided in Valley Center and Escondido. I have seen the good and the bad; some of both are gone. However, during the past several years the Escondido Montgomery Ward store was replaced by the movie complex, and new businesses added in the area, as well as upgraded older buildings.
The beautification of Escondido Boulevard is great. The East Valley district has undergone a remarkable transformation of many new buildings and businesses. This was due to the efforts of the East Valley Business Association, of which Sam Abed is a very active participating member.
Sam Abed is a man who values our country’s principles and its culture. He strongly respects our laws and the rights of our citizens. Abed has been an outstanding councilman and is well deserving of my vote, as well as those of all Escondido voters who want to see progress continue in our city.

Wood works hard for Oceanside
Mayor Wood has been a very successful mayor for all the citizens of Oceanside. He has made great strides with the business community and new businesses for the city. He has developed a very strong public safety presence with Oceanside Fire and Oceanside Police departments, and hired an exceptional police chief who has crime at a 30-year low.
He has led the development of a new senior center at El Corazon that will serve many seniors for years to come. He has increased both retail and business space, made many traffic improvements, including the newly completed Pacific Street bridge, and opened many new parks.
Jim Wood is serving all the people of Oceanside, and I know he has been working hard at this and will continue to work hard for all citizens of Oceanside. Please support Jim Wood for mayor of Oceanside.

Missing ‘Yes on Prop. 8’ signs
Opponents of Proposition 8 have been blatantly removing or vandalizing hundreds of signs in Carlsbad and Oceanside, which is a crime punishable by up to $1,000 and one year in jail.
This week alone, I personally set up at least 60 signs that have all disappeared within hours. Defenders of Prop. 8 are visible. We are out talking to our neighbors, sporting bumper stickers, passing out fliers, waving signs at intersections and paying for our materials and fees. We are obeying the law and paying the price.
Opponents of Prop. 8 should come out of the dark and stop their theft and vandalism. Ironically, these opponents claim to promote tolerance and equality, yet they have zero tolerance for those of us who want to protect marriage and religious freedom.
We can’t just look the other way when we see this happening and say that our difference of opinion warrants illegal activity. If anyone witnesses these crimes, take a picture of the offender and his/her license plate and report it to the police immediately. They have promised to prosecute. If you don’t support Prop. 8, at least support our constitutional freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

Vote ‘no’ on Prop. 8 to ensure rights for all
Regardless of how one feels about gay marriage, we hope that you will consider voting “no” on Proposition 8. This proposition sets a dangerous precedent by amending the California constitution to take away the rights of a portion of California’s citizens.
The proponents of Prop. 8 would have you believe that this measure will force clergy to perform gay marriages or lose their tax-exempt status, which is patently false. The court decision clearly states that, “No religion will be required to change its religious policies or practices with regard to same-sex couples, and no religious officiant will be required to solemnize a marriage in contravention of his or her religious beliefs.”
Commercials also falsely claim that teachers would be mandated to teach about gay marriage in the classroom when there would be absolutely no change in educational policy.
When my husband and I married over 29 years ago, it deepened our commitment to one another, in addition to the legal protections, rights and responsibilities we enjoy. A “no” vote on Prop. 8 will ensure that this remains a fundamental right for all Californians.

Election choices are simple in Oceanside
As we prepare to vote on Nov. 4, it is easy to make your selection for Oceanside mayor and City Council. If you want stinking, polluting industries like concrete plants and the two proposed hot oil asphalt plants, one at El Corazon and another on San Luis Rey River, then Feller, Chavez and Gibson are your guys. They are Los Angeles-type folks who want to see our town filled with towering 30-story high-rises at the beach and harbor. They believe the city should pave over every square inch of space with their developer buddies’ projects. They also have taken money from developers who are suing the city. ...
If you believe Oceanside has a better future than that, then re-elect Mayor Wood and Councilwoman Sanchez, and elect newcomer Chuck Lowery. They all grew up here and love this town. They understand that you must balance job development with our environment. Projects should enhance our quality of life, not destroy it. They will bring good jobs to our city without selling off our open space and without putting massive traffic and heavy-polluting industries in our beautiful coastal city.
Vote Wood, Sanchez and Lowery.

Too much hate in this election
This Sunday, I woke up to find vandalism up and down my residential street. My neighbors had recently put up four to five signs supporting Proposition 8 on their front lawns. Someone had come by overnight and took down their signs. Then they wrote in chalk in front of their houses “No on Prop. 8.” I know chalk comes off, and I know signs can be replaced. However, this is vandalism and should not be OK coming from either side.
People who put signs in their front yard have the right to do so. Is it safe to assume that the other side of this issue promotes acts of aggression by trespassing on others’ property to get their point across?
This is the type of hate that is ruining our election this year. I see graffiti on John McCain signs, and hear reports of cars and houses being vandalized because of their political support. ... The same people who preach the word “tolerance” laugh at these incidents because they are directed to the other side. As someone who is undecided, these acts make me angry, and make me want to vote for the party that defends aggression against one’s neighbor.

Express yourself respectfully
Recently, a majority of Californians voted to retain marriage as between a man and a woman. When four judges overturned the will of the majority, a very vocal minority rejoiced. Marriage advocates gathered enough signatures to get Proposition 8 on the ballot to restore the definition of marriage. The vocal minority quickly found large donors to finance a media campaign against the will of the majority. ...
Gradually, however, many of the silent majority have spoken up, donating, canvassing, calling, putting up signs, sporting bumper stickers. As this grassroots support for marriage gained momentum, the illusion that the vocal minority were the majority dropped away.
Unfortunately, some members of the vocal opposition have taken to other methods: removing signs and bumper stickers, shouting curses at sign twirlers, even physically assaulting Prop. 8 supporters. In America, even the silent majority has the right to free speech, not just the vocal minority. If some resort to theft, vandalism and violence, they are only admitting by their actions that they have the weaker argument, the less-worthy cause. We should express ourselves respectfully and let the entire electorate work it out at the polls.

Protect our parks and beaches
Oceanside voters, the future of our parks, beaches and neighborhoods are at stake in this election. Jack Feller, Jerry Kern and Rocky Chavez (KFC) voted to put a concrete plant in a neighborhood along the creek that empties into Buccaneer Beach. Feller and Chavez have taken money from the developer who wants to put a dump above our water supply at the San Luis Rey River that empties into Harbor Beach. They favor selling our parkland at Goat Hill.
Feller says he supports kids and recreation, but he favors putting an asphalt plant at El Corazon, our future park, and another asphalt plant above the SLR River. Feller and Kern also appeared before the Coastal Commission and said it was OK to put a road through a state park. KFC also supports removing zoning regulations to allow high-rise buildings along our coast.
Our parks, beaches and neighborhoods are for sale to the developer friends of Feller and Chavez. Jim Wood, Esther Sanchez and Charles Lowery are longtime Oceanside residents who care about you and me, our parks and beaches and our neighborhoods. Vote Wood, Sanchez and Lowery.

McCain past his prime
John McCain claims he knows how to capture or kill bin Laden. ... If “country first” is the motto of his campaign, why wouldn’t he put the country first and share this information now? If he isn’t elected, will he share this information anyway, or will he take his ball and go home?
John McCain claims he knows how to win the war in Iraq. If he is elected president, he will do this. Is this based on wars he has won in the past? If so, what were these wars?
John McCain claimed the economy was stable. A few hours later, Wall Street began a tumble that ended with a government bailout. John McCain claimed to know nothing about economics and then suspended his campaign to rush back to Washington to save the economy. It took more than 20 hours for him to rush back from New York.
John McCain claimed he would pick a well-qualified, experienced running mate. He picked Sarah Palin. He should have picked Tina Fey. She closely resembles Palin, but has more talent and is more qualified. John McCain claims to be a maverick. The only maverick he resembles was made by Ford and is past its prime, much like John McCain.

Voter fraud – fact or fiction
Much is currently being made by the McCain campaign and RNC about the largest threat to our democracy ever, that of fraudulent voter registration. This, unfortunately, is old news and something brought up for every major election. The RNC would like nothing more than to scare away potential Obama voters on Election Day. McCain is looking for an excuse to claim that the election was stolen from him, as he fails to acknowledge his own campaign missteps and the changing mood of the country.
We in California are pretty used to the process of gathering signatures, thanks to our method of approving initiatives and ballot measures. ... Here in San Diego, the Republicans would routinely pay more than $5 for a Republican registration. That kind of system just begs for fraudulent signatures and registrations by those looking to make a quick buck.
Don’t fall prey to this voter suppression. If you’ve registered, go vote. ... It is a sad day when an honored war hero has to stoop so low and smear hard-working community organizers, as he is doing. Voter registration fraud is a red herring. Make sure you go to the polls and allow your voice to be heard.

Double standard for tolerance and rights
Proponents of homosexual and lesbian marriage call for civil rights and tolerance, yet their campaign is intolerant of traditional marriage advocates and seeks to take away their rights.
Jose Nunez was brutally attacked by an assailant who had just stolen 75 “Yes on Prop. 8” signs that Jose was distributing (“Prop. 8 supporter allegedly attacked in Modesto,” Oct. 13). Jose was rushed to a hospital by ambulance and received 16 stitches. A local hotel owner contributed money to ProtectMarriage.com and was subsequently picketed by Prop. 8 opponents who tried to extort an equivalent sum of money for their cause. A partner at the law firm of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe was chastised by a colleague in a firm-wide e-mail for making a contribution as a private individual to support Prop. 8.
Many anti-Prop. 8 activists have been caught defacing, destroying and stealing signs. Many more have eluded detection. I have personally delivered more than 50 “Yes on Prop. 8” signs and most, if not all, are missing. ... Prop. 8 opponents argue that supporters are intolerant, bigoted and out of step with the enlightened majority view. The facts show a double standard for tolerance and civil rights.

What change will Obama bring us?
George W. Bush has been in office for seven-plus years. The economy was great for six of those years. Dow Jones hit a record 14,000 high, gas was around $2.19 a gallon, unemployment was 4.5 percent.
In 2006, Americans decided they wanted a change, and voted in a Democratic Congress. Gas went over $4 a gallon, unemployment went up to 5 percent, 1 percent of American homes are in foreclosure and the Dow speaks for itself. I can hardly wait to see what changes await us if Barack Obama become president.

Seniors support Wood, Sanchez and Lowery
One important issue facing seniors living in mobile-home parks in Oceanside is rent control. There are approximately 3,500 mobile homes in Oceanside, and Mayor Jim Wood and Councilwoman Esther Sanchez have continually demonstrated their support for rent control.
We seniors also support Charles “Chuck” Lowery for Oceanside City Council. We need someone like him on our City Council, someone who is dedicated to preserving our quality of life. Chuck’s typical supporters are small-business owners, working families, neighborhood association members and senior citizens. He also will work well with Mayor Jim Wood and Councilwoman Esther Sanchez.
It is imperative that we support Mayor Jim Wood and Councilwoman Esther Sanchez and Charles Lowery by getting out to vote on Election Day!

Purpose of Prop. 8 is to deny equality
I wonder what Theresa Ellis of Ramona http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2008/10/19/opinion/letters/z77c67d6094d9c6ed882574e5007af661.txt”">(Letters, Oct.19) would say if she was told that she could not wed the person she loved, but would have to be satisfied with a domestic partnership? When she asked why, she was told that her marriage would not fall within the definition supported by various religious organizations, of which she wasn’t even a member. Not only that, she was told she couldn’t even have a civil marriage where religion isn’t even involved! How can that be? Isn’t there freedom of religion? What happened to our Constitution? What happened to equal protection for all?
If Proposition 8 passes, the religious definition of marriage will be forced onto everyone in the state of California, even citizens who have no religious affiliation at all. Prop. 8 eats away at the equal protection clause of our Constitution. I urge everyone to vote “no” on Prop. 8.

A glare of our own making
The issue of light pollution is so critical that the National Geographic devoted its November issue to the problem, titled “The End of Night” and “Why We need Darkness.”
The article points out that half a century ago, Flagstaff, Ariz., tightened regulations on lights because the Lowell Observatory, which sits high above the city, could no longer see the sky “in all its glorious clarity.” In 2001, Flagstaff was declared the first “dark sky” city.
A great portion of Encinitas would be looking down at the blinding sports lights on the Hall property if it becomes a regular sports park (“Council makes way for five lighted sports fields in Hall park,” Oct. 23). We could be living in the glare of our own making.
The author of “Our Vanishing Night,” Verlyn Klinkenborg, says, “In the end, humans are no less trapped by light pollution than the frogs in a pond near a brightly lit highway.” Think about it.

Bashing Republicans again?
Interesting title change on the front page on Oct. 20. The Associated Press titled this article, “Mortgage firm arranged stealth campaign,” but the North County Times had to take it a step further to implicate the Republicans.
This mortgage mess called Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is mostly the result of the Democrats’ affordable housing policy. This article describes how Democratic friends at Freddie Mac contributed influential money to lobbyists aimed at influencing the GOP. Not that the GOP received influential financing, as your renamed article headline implies: “Freddie Mac secretly paid GOP firm $2M.”
Where was the North County Times headline identifying the people who blocked the federal government’s effort to address this mortgage mess in 2004? Where is the North County Times article on the front page that shows Sen. Dodd (D), Paulson, Reps. Barney Frank (D) and Maxine Waters (D) and their recorded efforts to block corrective actions to fix the spiraling losses mounting at Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae in hearings of 2004?

Fix the bottleneck in Valley Center
Re: the article reporting on the improvements to Valley Center Road http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2008/10/19/news/inland/vc/z071e48d9e12cd861882574e10066f630.txt”">(“End of road work expected in nine months,” Oct. 20): Now that we can see the end in sight for completion of the Valley Center Road improvements, we need for the city of Escondido to fix the biggest impediment to travel between Valley Center and Escondido. That is the bottleneck at the intersection of Lake Wohlford Road and East Valley Parkway, where East Valley Parkway necks down from two lanes in either direction to one lane.
During rush hour and late afternoons on the weekend, the traffic on East Valley Parkway backs up nearly a mile and a half. Here we have a nice new four-lane road up the hill into Valley Center on one end, a four-lane road out of Escondido on the other end, and in between is a two-lane bottleneck of about a quarter-mile in length.
Let’s get some common sense worked into the road planning done by the city of Escondido. Granted, turning this short two-lane section of road into four lanes might not improve travel for Escondido residents, but it would surely help those who live in Valley Center and do much of their shopping in Escondido.

Surf school regulations a joke
I am very disappointed in the recent regulations that the Encinitas City Council has proposed upon surf schools http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2008/10/12/news/coastal/encinitas/z7cf831b90f67726c882574de007808c5.txt”">(“City to regulate surf camps,” Oct. 13). I own and operate Surf eCo Surf School, a very small business that I started this year. While I do agree that there should be regulations on surfing schools because Encinitas residents should not have to walk miles past surf schools to find a place to sit on the beach, I think the new regulations are completely unreasonable and unfair.
The goal of my surf school was to raise money to save acres of rain forest in Costa Rica and to bring environmental awareness to new surfers. I work full time at UC San Diego and volunteer my service on weekends to teach lessons just south of Swami’s. With the new regulations, I will no longer be able to teach surfing. This is very devastating because in Surf eCo’s first year, we raised enough money to save 75 acres of rain forest. ... My classes never had more than five students, and we held beach cleanups every weekend as part of the class.
Encinitas was greedy enough to require a fee, but prohibiting teaching on weekends was a low blow and has ruined my surf school aspirations.

Now, you've got two cars in your driveway, a few color TV's, including one in your daughter's room, a house with more rooms than people need...
But you can't afford your own health insurance, and need that provided for you.
And somethings that many think are out of their own control, really aren't.
Take for example, a few years back, it was found that Bank of America was giving out credit cards to illegal aliens. Did you move your money?
Staying current is important. Many saw this coming housing boondoggle years ago. My own financial consultant told me as far back as 2004, housing costs in the San Diego area was over priced, and would re-set itself downward about 20-25%. This kind of information is critical for making sound financial decisions. But it does help if all your listening to, reading, or paying attention to are those who say the things you want to hear.
Do the things other people do to mess up the economy for others bother me?
Sure, but if my house is in order, I'm better able to weather the storm, than if I lived as if there was no tomorrow.
Mr. Benson, takes a stab at free-market capitalism, and says that unbridled greed will destroy capitalism.
Here's what I'd like to know.
How many of you, have quit a job for another that paid better, or had better benefits, or both?
Is your greed "unbridled?"

Apollo wrote on Oct 27, 2008 8:03 AM:Re: Erica Cabacungan, Sarah Wilson and Ben Lund (letters)
Three more writers join the chorus of those who write to complain of stolen or vandalized Prop 8 signs, with the implication (not supported by any evidence) that the "NO" people are disproportionately responsible. It must be pointed out that many "NO on 8" signs have also been damaged or destroyed.
In the past two days, I have commented both that it is wrong to deface others' signs and that Prop 8 is not, as one writer said, "free speech," it is HATE SPEECH. Prop 8 signs are unlike any other signs for candidates or other propositions, that are just statements of political support. A Prop 8 sign singles out specific elements of our community and says directly to them that they are the objects of hatred and that these people want to yank away from them Constitutionally-guaranteed rights. IT IS HATE SPEECH.
However, in a society that values FREE SPEECH, that often means that OFFENSIVE SPEECH must be tolerated, like when the ACLU supported the rights of Neo-Nazi's to march through the predominantly Jewish community of Skokie, Illinois. I do not agree with those who remove or damage Prop 8 signs, but I do understand their visceral reaction against nasty hate speech.
Sarah Wilson's letter even goes so far as to decry "too much hate" and actually accuses a whole party of "defending aggression against one's neighbor." She is decrying hate while speaking hate speech; she is bearing false witness by misrepresenting the facts of who is doing what to whom, and LYING if she says any political party has sanctioned the removal or vandalism of others' signs.
How can anyone take seriously someone who condemns hate hatefully, and claims the moral high ground while bearing FALSE WITNESS against legitimate organizations?

This has got to be one of the least thought-out letters ever submitted, and that's saying a lot!
Comparing animal same-sex acts with cannibalism?
First, this guy obviously does not read this letters page consistently, or else has problems retaining new cognitive perceptions or - hope not - is just dishonest. The pro-equal rights people are not the ones who introduced the idea of animals. Several anti-marriage activists complained that same-sex relationships could not be normal because they did not occur in the animal kingdom, and when a flood of responses came in showing them to be totally false, they changed their tune and - notwithstanding that THEY are the ones who brought it up - complained about comparing animals to humans.
Now Vanderstel is going a step further, and making the comparison between private consensual adult relationships that do not harm or infringe any other person, with, what? CANNIBALIZING your young? Are you kidding me.
Again, if you can't discuss the actual issue on the table, CHANGE THE SUBJECT.

Classy, isn't it? Now think for a moment about what we get if McCain/Palin win next week. Will Palin assume she's the real head of the party and the nation? Will she contradict McCain in public when her own ego and ambition are threatened? Will her eye be on 2012, as it is now? What kind of nerve does this woman have? Does she honestly believe that her belief in God, and her belief that God really believes in her, and her unshakable egotism are all it takes to be the leader of the free world? She has no real knowledge of the world, yet just assumes she can run it. Is she crazy? Folks, what she's showing us now amounts to yet more reasons to either not vote, or to vote for Obama. NOTICE TO EMPLOYEES wrote on Oct 27, 2008 9:21 AM:As of November 5, 2008, when President Obama is officially elected into office, our company will install a few new policies which are in keeping with his new, inspiring issues of change and fairness:
1. All salespeople will be pooling their sales and bonuses into a common pool that will be divided equally between all of you. This will serve to give those of you who are underachieving a "fair shake."
2. All low level workers will be pooling their wages, including overtime, into a common pool, dividing it equally amongst yourselves. This will help those who are "too busy for overtime" to reap the rewards from those who have more spare time and can work extra hours.
3. All top management will now be referred to as "the government." We will not participate in this "pooling" experience because the law doesn't apply to us.
4. The "government" will give eloquent speeches to all employees every week, encouraging it's workers to continue to work hard "for the good of all."
5. The employees will be thrilled with these new policies because it's "good to spread the wealth." Those of you who have underachieved will finally get an opportunity; those of you who have worked hard and had success will feel more "patriotic."
6. The last few people who were hired should clean out their desks. Don't feel bad, though, because President Obama will give you free healthcare, free handouts, free oil for heating your home, free food stamps, and he'll let you stay in your home for as long as you want even if you can't pay your mortgage. If you appeal directly to our democratic congress, you might even get a free flat screen TV and a coupon for free haircuts (shouldn't all Americans be entitled to nice looking hair?) !!!

1. You may see some new faces around. With Obama's $3,000 tax CREDIT for hiring new employees inside our borders (offset by eliminating tax breaks for outsourced jobs), we will be able to hire more workers and become more productive.
2. The company will be growing. With the waiver of capital gains on startup enterprises, we will be able to expand into new fields that the Bushnomics policies made prohibitve.

Juxtapose that against recent liberal Justice William O. Douglas: “At the Constitutional level we work, 90% of any decision is emotional. The rational part of us supplies the reasons for supporting our predilections.’

Just the opposite it true: The universal enfranchisement of civil rights makes for stronger rights for everyone, and strengthens our society.

But in any case, any reasonable interpretation of the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment, which applies to the States as well as the Federal Government, does not require it to spell out every single actual act of government that is to be applied equally to every person. Since performing marriages is a civil act of government, no reasonable person could disagree that the Federal Constitution also should protect same sex marriage, however, that was not the principle applied in the present case which, having been decided solely on the California Constitution, could not be appealed to the Federal Court.
By the way, I also keep a copy of the U.S. Constitution available at all times (digital, on my computer).

It's a moral issue, if by that one means a matter of right and wrong in the context of our national values. Do homosexuals harm anyone by asking that they, like straights, be "permitted" to enjoy the same benefits of marriage? Does allowing them to pursue the most basic, ordinary happiness that a sanctioned partnership entails also promote equality? These two moral questions drive the whole thing, in my opinion. Are you kidding when you ask for help in understanding what this quote is referring to? Do you really understand so little of history and the Constitution?
The Constitutional Convention specifically reflected calls from certain delegates to create a new Nation of all free people, and to mandate that all slaves be freed. This was specifically rejected. Not only did they perpetuate slavery, but they officially counted the value of a person of African descent as 3/5 the value of a white person. That "blind spot" on the vision of liberty and freedom generated a legacy from which we still suffer today.
As for your later comment about Prop 8 going to the U.S. Supreme Court, it is right in one point and wrong in two others. It is correct that the case will rightly be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court under the 14th Amendment, as it should be. However, I do not agree with you that they will uphold same-sex rights. Although I think it is clear and unambiguous that the Constitution demands it, I do not believe that the 7 Republican majority has the will or courage to do what is right. The second point of disagreement is this fantasy you again perpetuate that the 14th Amendment applies only to freed slaves. Again, you are rehashing an old conversation The freed slaves may have inspired it, and put the leaders of the nation in an expansive, freedom-loving state of mind, but the Amendment was written with no limitation to freed slaves no matter how much you want to change the Constitution and add to it in ways you would be highly critical of, if a sitting judge did it.
As to your quote from Douglas, I did respond to it, but the reference was far to oblique, or should I say "nuanced," and obviously, yet again, it sailed right over your narrow conservative cognition. I noted that Roe (1973) explicitly rejected and overturned Griswold (1965).
Douglas was a great jurist. He also went off the deep end a few times. In Roe, the High Court rejected his statement and curtailed it, though coming to a conclusion in which he might likely have filed a separate concurrence.

In the Senate, there is a 49-49 tie plus two independents who have voted with the Democrats only for the purpose of committee assignments. The Democrats are TEN VOTES short of stopping Republican filibusters. They do not have the power to pass legislation.
Only in the House is there an actual voting majority.
However, in BOTH the House and the Senate, they are far short of the supermajority (2/3) needed to override a presidential veto.
The Democrats do not have enough votes in ANY HOUSE of the Congress to pass legislation.

John McCain was born outside the United States, outside U.S. territory, and is not a native born citizen. This raises questions about McCain’s qualification to be president.
Mr. McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936, which has generated debate that has surfaced periodically since the founders first set quill to parchment and declared that only a “natural-born citizen” can hold the nation’s highest office.
Law school review articles have debated over whether only those delivered on American soil can be truly natural born. To date, no American to take the presidential oath has had an official birthplace outside the 50 states. We do know, however, that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, on American soil. McCain was not. The Los Angeles Times, in an article on Feb. 28, 2008, discussed this McCain conundrum in some detail.

I do support other Americans who put money there; it's their right to gamble, but I had every right not to partake also, up until recently when GWBush demanded, yes demanded, that my and others' tax money be shipped into wall street anyway. McCain went along with it because he also wanted it. Obama went along with it because he didn't have any choice on the matter anyway. It was too much of a risk to the country to make a stand against it and possibly lose an election and thus we end up remaining in Iraq for all perpetuity until we are flat bankrupt.
In summary, when tax money, like Robin Hood taking money from the rich and giving it to the poor, ends up in American's hands, then it's 'wealth redistribution and Marxist socialism and evil welfare.' McCowan wrote on Oct 28, 2008 6:33 PM:Dear Editor,
I am both African-American and native American by birth. I take great pride in my heritage, despite the ignoble history of slavery and injustices against natives of America. Many of my forefathers learned to have faith and trust in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and believed God raised up the likes of Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison and even Abraham Lincoln to help deliver them from bondage. We are a spiritual people; our struggle has always invoked the divine power of God to overcome injustice and oppression.
Over forty years ago, my forefathers again called upon God for help and, with the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement, marched against the injustices that were committed against them because of the color of their skin. They were lynched because of the color of their skin. They were forbidden the right to vote because of the color of their skin. They were refused service at the “whites only” counters because of the color of their skin. They were kept in decrepit, segregated schools because of the color of their skin. They lived and died in the fight for equality, because they believed God’s word that in Christ we are all equal. This equality was established in the Bible (Galatians 3:28). Let there be no confusion; this equality refers to the creation of men, not to their sexual preferences.
Now we are being asked to vote No on Proposition 8, which many say will deny equal rights to homosexual couples. I do not presume to speak for all, but I know I speak for many people of color when I say that I am appalled that homosexuality is being likened to being born with a darker skin color. Never in American history has discrimination been a label regarding a behavior; moreover, a behavior which the religious convictions of many (Christian, Jew and Muslim alike) dictate is immoral. Homosexuals are not a “race” of people. Homosexuality is a choice of a sexual lifestyle. Skin color is not.
How are the civil rights of homosexuals being threatened? Have they been lynched? Disenfranchised? Segregated? Under current law, civil unions provide homosexuals the same the rights afforded to heterosexuals. What we are being asked to do is to deny our spiritual heritage and embrace a lifestyle that is contrary to that spiritual heritage. The California Teacher’s Association has now spent more than $1 million to make sure we teach it to our children. We are being told that we must celebrate their lifestyle, or else we are bigots who must be silenced.
Homosexuals are asking us to give them an “equal right” which only God can give. Marriage is a union between a man, a woman and God. He established it, and voting “no” won’t make it right.

Read the Oceanside council meeting summaries. You will see that the mud slinging by the firefighters union is just that. Please don't vote based on bias purposely written editorials.
