OCEANSIDE: Pilots group targets Sanchez in TV ads
By CRAIG TENBROECK - Staff Writer | ∞
OCEANSIDE ---- A pilots group is attacking Councilwoman Esther Sanchez in TV advertisements, a campaign tool rarely seen in Oceanside.
The 30-second spot, which features a cartoon picture of Sanchez, appeared on television Tuesday and quickly popped up on the Internet site YouTube.
A spokeswoman for Cox Communications said the Oceanside Airport Political Action Committee paid $27,000 to run the ad this week and on Monday.
Sanchez, one of eight names on the Nov. 4 ballot for two City Council seats, rebuked the ads.
The airport group is supporting Councilman Jack Feller and school board Trustee Jim Gibson in the race. It is also backing Councilman Rocky Chavez in the mayoral election.
"This is the first time we've gone into the TV area," said Rene de Lathauwer, who heads the pilots' political action committee. "We think it's an open market and we thought it would be a good way of communicating with the public."
The pilots group was a big spender in the 2006 election when it worked to defeat Councilwoman Shari Mackin and elect council members Rocky Chavez and Jerry Kern.
At this point in the campaign, committees must report expenditures or contributions of $1,000 or more within 24 hours. By Tuesday afternoon, the airport committee had not reported any expenditures for television advertising, according to the city clerk's office.
The committee did report a $20,000 contribution from the California Real Estate Political Action Committee of Los Angeles this week. That's more than double what the pilots group had in its campaign war chest on Oct. 18, the final day of the last disclosure period.
Earlier this month, the group received $2,000 donations from The Landbourn Co. of La Jolla and Ord Properties Inc. of Carlsbad.
"Here we go again," Sanchez said. "Outside money, outside interests."
De Lathauwer said his committee's opposition to Sanchez wasn't based on airport-related issues, but rather "her stand on general things that are happening around Oceanside."
The television clip says Sanchez opposed anti-gang efforts, discouraged police cooperation with border patrol and tried to punish business groups that opposed her political plans.
De Lathauwer declined to discuss the allegations in detail, saying Sanchez's record "speaks for itself" and had been documented in news reports.
Sanchez, an attorney, called the ad's bullet points "lies" and threatened legal action.
"I didn't think that they would stoop so low, but I guess that's a reflection of their character and the character of their candidates," she said.

The Troika is Back wrote on Oct 28, 2008 6:08 PM:Actually Esther, it is not lies. The positions you take have consequences. As for negative campaigning, my mailbox has been flooded for the past week by the firefighter union deceitful mailers castigating Jack Feller and supporting you, Wood and Lowery. It doesn't feel so good when the shoe is on the other foot, does it Esther.
Fair Play wrote on Oct 28, 2008 6:15 PM:How about the $200,000 that the unions have ponied up, most of those people don't live in town. Aren't they outside interest too. Come on Esther If you can do it, so can the other side.
What comes around wrote on Oct 28, 2008 6:49 PM:goes around. Esther is being supported by the Oceanside Fire Fighters who are claiming that there was a move to privatize police, fire and paramedics. Where is the proof of this? The firefighters union is exploiting the public. I respect and appreciate anybody who puts their life on the line for me. It is so dissappointing that I now feel animosity towards them for blatently lying to the people they serve. Please spend another $15,000.00 on a glossy mailer that shows where and when there was a discussion about privatizing police service!!
What is wrong here wrote on Oct 28, 2008 7:03 PM:Shame on you Council Member Sanchez, you are a lawyer, if it is a lie you have legal recourse, however this will require you to prove your case. Way different than accusing staff and citizens from the dais of illegal activities when you know that you comments are are intentionally deceitful. We have a City Attorney that had your name and Mayor Wood's edited out of the Watson Study and the same City Attorney is waiting to release the Barnwell investigation until after the election to cover your slanderous statements about the developer and staff. It really is time for you to go Ms. Sanchez, Oceanside no longer have a place for your negativity.
Sanchez Deserves Al She Gets wrote on Oct 28, 2008 7:17 PM:Turnabout is fair play. Do we wonder why Ms. Sanchez would have so much distain for special interest groups that oppose her, or those who willfully and wrongly accuse others just to serve an end? How does that make you feel Council Member Sanchez? This is the same feeling you have so enthusiastically brought to other’s lives, without the need to prove your allegations. So tell us what exactly did the pilot's say about you that you feel so wronged? I though you supported the airport, or was that the last election, perhaps the one before that? I am confused Ms. Sanchez what is your position on the airport this election?
Esther La Raza wrote on Oct 28, 2008 7:28 PM:Yep, its true! She has blocked federal inforcement against illegal alien criminals (mostly Mexican) in Oceanside. Her siding with the radical illegal alien activists is being exposed and coming back to haunt her (it always does). Eject Sanchez, she is too biased towards Latinos and illegals. Gibson and Feller for safe communities and the rule of law!
Yes to Esther Lowery and Wood wrote on Oct 28, 2008 7:41 PM:Sanchez, Wood and Lowery are long time Oceanside residents supported by the Oceanside Police and Oceanside Firefighters. Feller, Gibson and Chavez are supported by out of town businesses and out of town special interest groups. Shame on Feller, Gibson and Chavez for selling out Oceanside.
Time for Ester to Go wrote on Oct 28, 2008 7:48 PM:People in Oceanside are fed up with Ester, but Rocky Chavez is a sell out.
I am voting Wood, Gibson and Feller.
Wake up Oceanside wrote on Oct 28, 2008 7:49 PM:TV advertisement is very expensive. These out of town groups are expecting a big return on their investment; this is not just about a small airport...something else is cooking....wake up
What a Crock wrote on Oct 28, 2008 7:58 PM:Esther has never supported gangs. Sge was raised in the Eastside and has no stomach for gangs. She has no power over the Border Patrol and they are federal. What lies! The only truth in their tv spot was that Esther Sanchez works hard. She does. If you had doubts about Esther , please reconsider. This is so distasteful and it only proves who has the real BIG MONEY and it is not our brave firefighters and cops!!!
Are you better now than you were 3 years ago wrote on Oct 28, 2008 8:11 PM:Stop the rhetoric; look at your wallet and at the value of your home. Chavez, Feller and Kern have been the Troika in power at City Hall in the last 3 years. They had plenty of time to bring jobs and opportunities. They did not! They brought wealth to out of town developers and businesses
If you want to vote to make corporations wealthy, vote Chavez, Feller and Gibson. If you want somebody at City Hall that cares for you, vote Wood, Sanchez and Lowery.
FTM wrote on Oct 28, 2008 8:12 PM:Ester Sanchez does not believe in a ZERO GANG OCEANSIDE - she believes it's not attainable.
That in itself makes her unfit for the city council.
Oceanside MUST be ZERO GANGS in the future. NO ECUSES, NO EXCEPTIONS!
NO GANGS.
Anyone who can't support that should not be in our city government.
Sanches is more interested in the proliferation of gangs in Oceanside because it helps her cause to create more community groups for low income minorities to get grant money from government agencies and more votes for her.
This is an OLD game and we MUST NOT let this cancer take hold in Oceanside like it has in LA, Chicago, Oakland, and many other cities where these kind of people get established.
I urge ALL OF YOU to vote NO ON ESTER SANCHEZ! Yes on Wood is fine, but NO ON SANCHEZ! She will invite even more gang activity into ue city with her "community help" programs for "underprivileged" criminals living in Oceanside.
Please - throw her OUT!
Coastal Girl wrote on Oct 28, 2008 8:12 PM:The ad is all fabrications. For those of you who don't know what that means: They are outright lies. Does Oceanside really want another election bought by out of town money? If you do, you'll get more concrete plants and asphalt plants and all the dense development and traffic you can stand. My vote is going to Wood, Sanchez & Lowery because they care about our neighborhoods not big bags of money from out of towners.
Esther is great for Oceanside wrote on Oct 28, 2008 8:16 PM:Too bad she has been in minority and she has not been able to stop the selling out of Oceanside to people who care only about money and not what happens to you citizen of Oceanside.
Slander wrote on Oct 28, 2008 8:27 PM:Slander will not get Jack Feller elected. If he cannot win on his record, then he should not win at all. Esther has improved public safety -- with the lowest crime in 30 years! She also voted against turning 75 acres of prime commercial land into high density condos, which have stood vacant for years now. It's called greed. I am absolutely angry at Feller for going along with this. He will never have my vote again! I am voting for Wood, Sanchez and Lowery!
FTM to Are you better wrote on Oct 28, 2008 8:31 PM:Are we better than three years ago?
HELL YES!
Crime is LOWER
MORE business are in Ocenaside
The City has MORE money!
Downtown has improved
We have a light rail train now
They are building a Senior center
Yes, as Mayor Wood has said - we are WAY better today than we were three years ago? Where the hell have YOU been???
Why are we better? Because of the new guard of Wood, Rocky, Feller, and Kern!
Once we got Sanchez's little friend MACKIN off the council things REALLY started to improve!
I say replace Ester with a smarter liberal like Lowery or Martin and keep Wood AND Feller! And I say that BECAUSE of the past three years of performance from these people!
Everyone on the council has worked for the majority of the city except Sanchez - she constantly supports the MINORITY! She HATES the majority! Why? I have no idea but she is a HUGE obstacle to democracy in Oceanside and she MUST GO!
Insulted wrote on Oct 28, 2008 8:32 PM:As a voter, I am insulted that the pilots would stoop to this new low. You are bullies! Only 15 are Oceanside residents, too. The ad said Esther opposed the gang injunction. That I know is true. It also said that she opposed border check points. The only check point nearby is the one at San Clemente, and neither Esther nor anyone else on the council has power over that. Finally, the ad accuses Esther of voting against businesses. The only business Esther opposed was the concrete plant, which was a GOOD THING. Otherwise, its been the terrible trio, the "troika" of KFC who have destroyed the potential for Oceanside to have commerce. I am now even more resolved to vote for Esther! Crawl back under the rock you came from! YES for Wood, Sanchez and Lowery!
Out of Towners wrote on Oct 28, 2008 8:35 PM:Looks like the out of town pilots and real estate PAC have been busy on this blog site. They must be proud of their dasturdly deed. Well, it was the stupidest thing I have ever seen! They must be spending at least $20,000 on these dumb ads that don't even make alot of sense. Esther, I support you, because you care about our community and because you work so hard for all of us. I, too, am voting for Sanchez, Wood and Lowery.
Firefighters wrote on Oct 28, 2008 8:42 PM:Let's see ... the firefighters have paid for mailers that refer to actual proof of their statements. Gibson, whoever he is, has been caught and will probably be the next target of an investigation. The TV ad, on the other hand, makes off the wall statements. I believe its called slander, and I'm sure that Sanchez who is a lawyer will not be satisfied until she gets a full apology from the scoundrels. The firefighters are our friends. They are honest, hardworking people. I am voting for Sanchez, Lowery and Wood. They are the choice for those who keep me safe.
OMG wrote on Oct 28, 2008 8:47 PM:FTM -- how do you get off, with those lies??!!! I have been working with Esther in the faith based community; she has done more than any other person on the council to stop kids from getting into gangs. Your lies are outrageous! You must be desperate to save Feller, who has done absolutely NOTHING except vote yes to every development in town, regardsless of the impacts to neighborhoods and traffic! I am also voting for Sanchez, Wood and Lowery.
Bound to happen wrote on Oct 28, 2008 8:53 PM:I had hoped that it would not happen in Oceanside, a city that is proud of its diversity. But I guess when the hate comes out, the racism is sure to follow. I am outraged that this "FTM" person is talking about Esther as a "minority," "these kind of people." Esther graduated from a prestigious Ivy League College, then went on to law school. She has been giving back to her community for over two decades. Her good works are known beyond Oceanside. She has been a very good, intelligent council member who votes her conscious. You take the racism out of the FTM comments, and there's nothing left but innuendos. I do not want Oceanside to become another Escondido. Esther will win, and she will probably win big, according to everything I've seen and heard. I agree, these acts are probably of desperation, and are probably borrowing from the national election's dirty politics. I look forward to a change on the council. Oceanside deserves the best, and that means Wood, Sanchez and Lowery.
Give me Another Big Fat Break wrote on Oct 28, 2008 9:01 PM:I have always been a supporter of our police and fire employees. I am, however, appalled to learn that their union bosses are spending upwards of $200,000 to elect Wood, Sanchez & Lowery. What could they possibly hope to gain? Huge pay raises and even higher pensions? They are already the highest paid in the county and most of these employees don't live in Oceanside, either. They just take our money and spend it somewhere else.
As for Esther Sanchez, I'm tired of her always portraying herself to be the victim--but this shouldn't be hard for this long-time public defense attorney.
Esther has to go! Vote NO on Esther.
VOTE CHAVEZ, FELLER & GIBSON!!!!
jvc wrote on Oct 28, 2008 9:09 PM:Major networks? ha! If you call MSNBC a major network. What audience did they think they would reach during the Rachel Maddow Show? If the commercial I saw influences one vote, I'll be a monkey's uncle. Next time, pilots, donate that money to flight lessons for kids or something useful
Shame on all of you wrote on Oct 28, 2008 9:25 PM:All the negative attacks should stop. My daughter picked up the mail today and asked why the firefighters are so cruel. She said that she thought that our firefighters were supposed to be better than this. This is the role they're setting for our young Oceanside youth. Shame on the union and shame on the negative hit pieces. This is disgusting.
Dont let Feller benefit wrote on Oct 28, 2008 9:33 PM:From all this garbage. He has no mind of his own and he is happy to allow out of town developers pay for a tv hit piece to help him get elected. He will vote for whatever they tell him to vote for. Want a hot asphalt plant, Feller's your guy! Want a wall of high rise buildings along Coast Highway, Feller's your guy! Want to build tons of high density on Oceanside's borders? Feller will put a road through Oceanside so you can run that traffic through Oceanside! Feller is nothing but a tool and he is happy to be one as long as he has money in his campaign coffers to eat well in big restaurants and to play endless golf anf then hit the Casino to gamble away his nights. Don't think that is Jack Feller? Well jus twatch him. I have seen enough. Please do not cast a single vote for this guy!
Sylvia wrote on Oct 28, 2008 9:34 PM:This whole dog and pony show by the airport group is getting really old. First they bought Jerry Kern's seat. Now they are trying to buy whose? Gibson's? The people in the Vista School district can't stand him and we don't want him either!
Just rewards wrote on Oct 28, 2008 9:47 PM:Esther Sanchez has worked hard to build up animosity and hate in Oceanside during her eight years on the council. She feels wronged, well welcome to what you dish out on a daily basis Sanchez. All of this victimization should be saved for those you wrongly accused during your career Ms. Sanchez. I will be happy to see you out of office with the coming election.
Too bad... wrote on Oct 28, 2008 10:11 PM:Too bad people have to buy ads to tell the truth about Esther...we'd never read about this in the NCT because she's browbeaten then and with the paper losing reporters left & right the few good ones that are left can't dig into the truth around town.
Sad.
Esther rejected Bonnie wrote on Oct 28, 2008 10:14 PM:Remember a few years back, when DA Bonnie Dumanis and County Sup Ron Horn appeared before city council to get approval in their quest for federal money to combat gangs in N. County?
And, remember Esther going after the DA?
As a result, the county never got the money because of Esther AND, her troika at the time.
Horn said that cost the county more than $1 million.
Former Airport Supporter wrote on Oct 28, 2008 10:16 PM:I have always been in favor of the airport and did not vote to re-elect Shari Mackin because of her opposition to the airport(even though I supported here the first time). I really think the whole airport issue is like beating a dead horse at this point. The airport will be improved and stay in Oceanside. I think the pilots have just swung the sympathy away from their cause. After all does Oceanside really need an airport???? Now I think it does not!
Fire and Police Jertho wrote on Oct 28, 2008 10:44 PM:I just LOVE it when someone says "I stand with our fire and police. They do a great job." And then that person proceeds to berate everything the firefighters say they need to keep us safe. It's so predictable. Whenever I read your blogs, Ben, I know it's you because you always say the same thing. You are an incredibly two-faced disingenouos (Jack's big word) life form. You are the reason Oceanside is stuck in the dark, disgusting past. That is, you along with KFC and all the rest.
OCEANSIDIAN wrote on Oct 29, 2008 3:39 AM:The BIG LIE. Here we go again is right. Rancho Santa Fe snobs with their little airplanes want to run Oceanside as a fiefdom. They look down on Oceanside and their only interest in it is to preserve a little airport for their fun and recreation. Don't be fooled by big money from La Jolla and Rancho Santa Fe folks! And don't believe the nasty propoganda against our police and fire fighters. So they pool their campaign contributions into one and use it to support Esther and Jim Wood and Chuck Lowery ~ so what? $200,000? That's another BIG LIE. The contribution of each union member is tiny compared to the massive money now being used to install the pawns of the snobs and outside business interests: Feller, Chavez and Gibson. Folks, do the right thing: Support Esther Sanchez, Jim Wood and Chuck Lowery for a better and cleaner Oceanside! And while we're at it dump the bad guys and reject those who would buy Oceanside as their own playground.
FTM wrote on Oct 29, 2008 6:38 AM:I'm not afraid of being called racist - that's ALWAYS what you get whenever you oppose Sanchez - that's her stock in trade and THAT IS WHY SHE MUST GO!
That's the kind of crap they use to control national elections - anytime you attack someone your called a RACIST!
That is another one of the ugly cancers we must remove from our city.
We have a very diverse city of all colors living together - this kind of race baiting crap is what will destroy the city.
SANCHEZ OUT!
YES Esther wrote on Oct 29, 2008 7:34 AM:They KNOW Esther is winning, so they just had to beg their friends in the real estate PAC for money to run an ad. $27,000 -- and they are NOT going to stop Esther from winning! Esther is for Oceanside, and we love her for it! Hang in there, Esther! 6 more days to go and you will be the first person elected to the city council for 3 terms!
Jack must go wrote on Oct 29, 2008 7:36 AM:So, this is what we can expect if Feller is elected -- a bunch of lies from his friends? You need to ask WHY is Jack trying so hard that he would go around lying to the public? I am SICK of this, Jack, and YOU brought this cancer into Oceanside!

This is about OCEANSIDE - not RACE or GENDER or POWER GROUPS! I DON'T give a rat's behind about that stuff.
What I care about are the PEOPLE that LIVE IN MY CITY.
If you people in Oceanside elect Esther Sanchez I will support her because YOU ELECTED HER! Same goes for the rest of the people who get elected.
It's not right to go against the will of the people and I would not do that.
Esther Sanches is guilty of doing just what I described - BUT - IF SHE GETS ELECTED I AM WRONG! My whole premise is based on my impression that Esther is NOT supported by the residents of Oceanside.
The election itself will show if I am right or wrong.
I, (of course) think I am right.
Jim in Oceanside wrote on Oct 29, 2008 7:55 AM:One thing I've always thoroughly enjoyed about Oceanside is our diversity in population. Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians and people from New Jersey all living togther side by side. The same goes for our City Council. Esther Sanchez has done some great things for Oceanside, both before and during her time on the City Council. Yes, she is human and has made some mistakes, errors in judgement. I wouldn't trust her or anyone else if they weren't human. She cares about Oceanside - the people. We critically need a balance between industry and quality of living. I do not buy into the thought process that precludes Cement/Asphalt Plants from our "beautiful Ocean Community." However, I believe they belong in an industrial area. I am also a strong supporter of the Oceanside Airport and firmly believe that past City Councils have really screwed up in not fully developing Oceanside Airport to a more full potential. It will never ever be a "Palomar Airport," but we don't need a Palomar Airport. We do need better facilities for the aircraft and the people who fly them. We need a small quality hotel located adjacent to the airport. We also need a quality restaurant, something similar to what exists at Montgomery Field. I believe this will draw tourists and business into Oceanside. For you who've bought homes north or east of the airport - remember crossing east or west of the runway when you went to look at that house? The airport was there and will remain there - live with it! You support turning Valley Drivein into a shopping mall, well - support improvements to the airport as well.

Republican wrote on Oct 29, 2008 2:49 PM:Republican tactics for the past 100 years are; discredit the opponent with blatent lies, repeat the lies over and over. Ester is being attacked by the Republican tactics and a Republican will do anything to get elected. Vote for Ester and do not believe the lies. Republicans have always been against unions, decent wages, and always for the rich at the expense of the poor.
Lies wrote on Oct 29, 2008 2:58 PM:Another Republican tactic is the use of Race to win elections. See and hear the comments against Ester. Conservatives support low wages and destroy unions and cry out how patriotic they are. How government unions, and lazy minorities are always the problem. How big business and the rich creates wealth and the wealth trickles down to the poor working class.
Cool breeze wrote on Oct 29, 2008 4:13 PM:Sanchez finally OUT and Gibson IN, boy what a nice switch that will be. Refreshing!
FTM wrote on Oct 29, 2008 4:24 PM:The North County Times does not endorse Sanchez.
Go to the news links above and click on elections and you can see all the canidates statements.
NCT is endorsing Jim Wood and Jack Feller. That IS the right team for Oceanside. You people can pick anyone you want for the odd man out but just don't pick Esther. If your just trying to keep out a republican you have many good choices much better than her.
What wrote on Oct 29, 2008 4:25 PM:WHO is Gibson? I already voted for Sanchez, Wood and Lowery, and all my neighbors have done the same. They will make Oceanside better.
OCEANSIDIAN wrote on Oct 29, 2008 4:44 PM:Those who vote for Feller and Gibson and Chavez are being tools for rich people living south of Oceanside. Rich people who come here and exploit Oceanside for money and to have a place to park their recreational airplane and have fun with it. If anybody, like Esther Sanchez, gets in their way they use their money to try to destroy her. Well, it won't work this time. Esther is not Sheri Mackin, far from it. She will survive and continue to lead the way for a better quality of life and public safety in Oceanside! Vote for Esther Sanchez, Jim Wood and Chuck Lowery for a better Oceanside!
Change is needed wrote on Oct 29, 2008 5:30 PM:These blogs fairly reflect people’s reaction to Esther Sanchez, you either love her or hate her, there is not much in-between. One thing noteworthy is that despite her passion Esther Sanchez has been a divisive force on the Council for eight years. This is long enough to judge ones character, while I generally support her philosophy I can not condone her destructive demeanor. It is time for a change.
Personal Attacks by whos standard wrote on Oct 29, 2008 6:01 PM:Maybe Esther Sanchez has given others cause to dislike her, not because we disagree but because we have been treated disrespectfully in a public manner by Sanchez. Many have been on the receiving end of her accusatory triads from the dais, public and staff alike. Sure we all like to see the public’s right defended and what better than to expose what you think is wrong doing or misinformation. However, you cross the line when you; accuse without proof, you berate because you disagree, you chastise others for doing exactly what you do, you ask for political favors, or worst yet you ask for individuals to be removed from office because they take a position different from yours. Esther Sanchez should know better and we should hold our elected officials to a higher standard. This individual has made a career out of hate and contention. The political standard of “you either for me or you are against me” needs to change in Oceanside to issue based discussions. This cannot happen with the current political base of self serving interest on both sides. One can stand the political infighting but the disrespectful treatment dished out by Sanchez over the last eight years suggests she will not change.
Jackopoly wrote on Oct 29, 2008 6:08 PM:There they go again. The Pilot..pardon me...the Hobbyist Association trying to make an issue out of a non-issue. In 2006 they made the airport an issue when it was a non-issue and took down Shari Mackin by only a couple of hundred votes (Kern barely got in). Now Cowardly FIBson and the rest of the peanut gallery are making an issue about illegal immigration when I don't even remember it being a hot topic in this race when traffic and safety is.
Simple Simon wrote on Oct 29, 2008 7:00 PM:The choice is simple: Massive development and traffic, then go with the airport boys' picks: Gibson, Feller & Chavez. Proper development that respects the neighborhoods: then go with Wood Sanchez & Lowery. You'd definitely up the IQ on the dais.
Remember the FBI accusations wrote on Oct 29, 2008 7:13 PM:WE all remember Jim Wood's position that he had everyone under investigation by the FBI after the last election. The former Mayor and his campaign manager, and local individuals that contributed to his opponents campaigns. The only think we have heard about all this hoopla is the long lasting (3 Years old)lawsuit over Sanchez slandering a local developer over unproven Barnwell accusations.
Oside voters wrote on Oct 29, 2008 8:36 PM:Please, please, please.
Put Esther out to pasture.
I had forgotten about the Dumanis/Horn incident.
Just one more reason to put a long nail in her political future.
Esther who wrote on Oct 29, 2008 8:40 PM:Please citizens of Oceanside.
Elect Mike Lukas before Esther Sanchez.
I look forward to the day when people say: "Esther who?"
With a little bit of hope, that'll begin after the votes are tallied on Nov. 4.
OSIDE POLITICS wrote on Oct 29, 2008 9:08 PM:I can't believe the amount of money being spent on the Oceanside City Council race. The tv ads are a first in our history. So 1000 tv ads were purchased for $27,000 ($20,000 of which came from California DEVELOPERS.) Do the math. It doesn't add up. $27 per 30 second spot? I don't think so. There is a lot more money yet to be recorded.
Why all of the mailers, tv ads, and lies? Here's the bottom line. CA DEVELOPERS have outspent all other special interests easily 3 to 1. They OWN Chavez, Feller & Gibson. Chavez, Feller and Gibson want to eliminate the public POLICE and FIRE UNIONs and hope to privatize to the lowest bidder. The FIRE/POLICE have endorsed and spent $$$ to endorse the three candidates (Lowery, Sanchez & Wood) that want to keep public police and fire. You choose.
I personally want to keep public police and fire and feel that they have done a good job. I don't want to REZONE Oceanside and sell it off to the highest bidder. I don't think it serves the community nor does it develop strategically with thought given to the existing neighborhood and traffic capacities. The only person I can be sure of at this moment is LOWERY. He has received the least special interest money ($1000 per FPPC filing) and seems to be the true independent in our local election. VOTE!
jvc wrote on Oct 30, 2008 5:27 AM:This group gives you every reason tp pause! Is this special interest group so powerful that they can alter an election?
Yes jvc wrote on Oct 30, 2008 7:30 AM:The police and fire unions do have enough cash to alter the election. We have elected the former Police Union President as our Mayor Jim Wood. What do you expect to happen here? And why would the pilot care about Sanchez, last I heard she supported the airport this week.
FTM wrote on Oct 30, 2008 7:56 AM:Like I said folks:
If you throw out the comments of people saying "Feller, Chavez, Gibson" or "Wood, Sanchez, Lowery" you can get a pretty good gage of the residents feelings.
Most of the residents don't give a rat's behind about your stupid left/right, Republican/Democrat/ Consrvative/Liberal agenda because anyone who is voting based on a "group" is voting based on what SOME ONE ELSE IT TELLING THEM WHAT TO DO! They show thier own ignorance by showing they can't think for themselves!
Think for yourself. Don't let the politicos control your vote. Pick the people you want and get rid of the people you don't want.
Wood has been a good mayor and Feller has been a good councilman. They should keep thier jobs. Sanchez has been a bad councilman and should be fired.
... The NCT made thier endoesements public back on the 5th > Wood - Feller. I agree - split the ticket, go for balance, experience, and GOOD performance.
You all can pick whomever you want for the third person, ANYONE would be better than Sanchez.
OCEANSIDIAN wrote on Oct 30, 2008 10:32 AM:What's with these blogs attacking Esther Sanchez by claiming that she hurts the feelings of those who favor KernFellerChavezGibson? Awwww. Too, too bad. Is that the heart of your argument: that you have a personal dislike for Esther? What's really behind those little jibes and sarcasms and insults is an effort to get KFCG elected and retained on our City Council. Esther Sanchez votes WITH the rest of the Council in the vast majority of votes. That she opposes making Oceanside into one huge industrial park with rampant and anything-goes development rankles those who would exploit Oceanside, so they resort to mud slinging and personal attacks. Those same forces attack our public safety unions and try to smear them with lies and exagerations. If you divide the total amount of Oceanside police and firefighter union campaign contributions by the total number of union members, the contribution of each member is modest indeed. So they band together and pool their individual contributions, what's wrong with that? I, for one, favor public safety and our police and firefighters any time over those who would build cement and ashpalt monstrosities and the like in our City. Vote for Wood, Sanchez and Lowery for the good of Oceanside.
TO JVC wrote on Oct 30, 2008 4:22 PM:Did you miss the last election when they bought Jerry Kern's seat with about $100K of outside airport pilots association money from Maryland? Where have you been? Yes, MONEY does buy a seat in Oceanside. Pretty disgusting huh? I feel that anyone affiliated with the airport group is kinda like a skunk. You smell em before you see em.And those who play with skunks, end up with the smell on em too.
