Bowling club plans food drive

SAN MARCOS ---- The AMF Eagle Women's 200 Club bowling club, with AMF Eagle Lanes and the North County United States Bowling Congress Association, will conduct a food drive Nov. 1-23 to benefit shelters for abused women in North County. Pet adoption event planned for Nov. 1

SAN MARCOS ---- Petco, 114 S. Las Posas Road, will sponsor the Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary for a pet adoption event from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 1. Kittens, cats and dogs will be available. Dia de los Muertos celebration set

ESCONDIDO ---- The California Center for the Arts, Escondido, invites the community to its 14th annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 1 at the center, 340 N. Escondido Blvd.

Visitors are encouraged to participate in the center's annual installation celebrating Day of the Dead by making and offering and leaving personal objects in memory of loved ones. Past memorials have included objects such as photographs, mementos and flowers.

The event also will include art activities for children, live entertainment, free admission to the Center Museum, and free pan dulce and Mexican hot chocolate.

4S RANCH ---- The San Diego North Chamber of Commerce will present the fifth annual RB Fall Festival at 4S Ranch from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 on Camino del Norte between Dove Canyon and Rancho Bernardo roads.

The festival will feature live entertainment, health screenings, vendors, a Kiddieland, food and more.

Meet Dora the Explorer at festival

Poets Inc. group to meet

Artwork sought for heroes exhibit

ESCONDIDO ---- The Artists Gallery in Escondido is accepting original artwork on heroes for an exhibit to run Nov. 5-29. Artwork about or by members of the U.S. military, police, fire and rescue will be featured in the show, which is sponsored by the Escondido Rotary Club and the Escondido Art Association.

Entry fee is $20 for the first piece and $5 for each additional work up to three pieces. Entries will be accepted for exhibit only, not for sale. The work will be judged and awards presented at a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 8.

Grandmothers Club to meet Nov. 6

Low-cost grocery program available

POWAY ---- Local residents can get low-cost groceries once a month through Poway Share. Most food packs include meat and vegetables; a vegetable pack is also available. Prices range from $6 to $31 per pack; however, a complete Thanksgiving dinner pack is available for $36. Early orders are encouraged.

Place orders between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. weekdays at the Poway Senior Center, 13094 Civic Center Drive, or place orders and pay for them online at http://www.powayshare.com. November's orders must be placed by Nov. 10. Distribution will be Nov. 22.

Volunteers sought to help seniors

ESCONDIDO ---- The Senior Service Council of Escondido is an all-volunteer organization that provides many services for senior citizens, including income tax preparation, legal advice, job referrals, computer training, assistance with government programs and support groups. Event to benefit recovery facility

RAMONA ---- In His Steps Christian Recovery Homes will hold a dinner and auction at 5 p.m. Nov. 15 at Mountain View Community Church, Highway 78 and Ash Street. Cost is $10.

In His Steps Christian Recovery Homes is a residential program for men and women recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. The women's facility was destroyed in the Witch Creek fire, and the group is rebuilding. Proceeds from the event will go toward the rebuilding. Auction items are needed. Donations are tax deductible.

Brandeis group plans boutique

CARMEL MOUNTAIN RANCH ---- Brandeis National Committee, Rancho Bernardo chapter, will hold a boutique and luncheon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club, 14050 Carmel Ridge Road. 

Boutique items will be sold, and the Shakespeare Society will perform comedy scenes from Shakespeare's plays.

Mothers group meets monthly

Free hikes offered at Daley Ranch

ESCONDIDO ---- Free guided nature hikes are offered at Daley Ranch. All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Bring at least two liters of water; wear a hat, sunscreen and hiking boots or treaded footwear. Youths under age 18 must be with an adult. No pets. Unless otherwise noted, meet at the La Honda Drive entrance. A shuttle with handicapped accessibility runs Sundays.

-- 2 p.m. Nov. 1: "Fitness Hike." Enjoy an 8.5-mile afternoon fitness hike led by naturalist Rita Ospelt.

-- 7:30 a.m. Nov. 7, 14 and 21: "Mystery Walk." Join naturalist Kathleen Flanagan for an early morning hike. Based on the group's makeup, she will select a trail for a fast-paced, strenuous walk of about seven miles.

-- 8 a.m. Nov. 8: "Rocks and Earthquakes." Naturalist Jack Pomeroy will lead a moderately strenuous hike and discuss rock formations and earthquakes.

-- 8:30 a.m. Nov. 9: "Before, During & After a Wildfire." Naturalist Dorothy Klitzing will lead a four-mile hike and talk about what to do before, during and after a fire, as well as disaster preparedness.

-- 9 a.m. Nov. 9: "Daley Ranch Scenery." A diverse plant population and expansive views are waiting to be enjoyed on naturalist Rick Paul's occasionally strenuous four-mile hike. Meet at the Cougar Pass parking lot.

-- 7:30 a.m. Nov. 11: "Fitness Hike." Get a good workout on this 12.4-mile hike around Daley Ranch led by naturalist Rita Ospelt.

-- 5 p.m. Nov. 11 and 25: "Stroll Around the Ranch." Naturalist Michelle Capodice will lead a leisurely hike to the Ranch House and talk about the local plants and animals.

Rincon recycling helps Rady Children's Hospital

VALLEY CENTER ---- The Rincon Tribal Government recycled thousands of dollars in used electronic equipment at the Rady Children's Hospital Electronic Recycling Event recently, with 50 percent of the proceeds going to hospitalized children.

The Rincon tribe donated 30 PCs, 20 computer monitors, 15 printers, five fax machines, 20 cell phones and batteries, keyboards, a PBX phone system, numerous modems, cables and wires, UPS devices and computer frames without hard drives.

Most of the donated items were the result of updating electronic equipment at Harrah's Rincon Casino and Resort, owned by the Rincon tribe.
