CalPERS, the other shoe?
Is CalPERS (and all the other defined benefit pension plans) the other shoe to drop? How can the board of the California Public Employees Retirement System expect us to bail them out for their bad investment decisions ("CalPERS loses $46.5B, warns of contribution increase," Oct. 23)?
As one of the taxpayers who would be expected to help pay for this CalPERS shortfall (even if indirectly), I have seen my own retirement accounts decrease in value. But instead of being able to increase my contributions to allow me to retire on time, now I would be asked to pay so that a CalPERS retiree can get a guaranteed amount? I don't think so!
Talk of a CalPERS bailout needs to be stopped before it begins! I'm sure the retirees will still be able to get a nice retirement check, albeit at a reduced amount. We're all in this together, and the public employees will need to suffer along with the rest of us.

Pot calling the kettle black
I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican. I am an American.
In response to Chris Pulse's letter of Oct. 13: Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I have been reading the letters section for nearly 20 years, and Mr. Pulse's letters are some of the most ... hateful I have ever read. Chris Pulse lecturing people about hate? You have got to be kidding me. ...

Government ideas never come to pass
Several years ago, the city fathers of Carlsbad bought the Farmers Insurance building for some $20 million. The purpose of this acquisition was to house all of the various departments under one roof. This would have made a whole lot of sense.
However, like many other government plans, it never came to pass. In the meantime, the building is still vacant, and no tax revenue.
The Olympic Hotel and Spa was bought by some concern in San Francisco and closed to make room for a great renovation, a big new health and gym club. Guess what? That also was closed on Jan. 1 of 2002, and that too is still vacant. Many of us used that facility and spent money in the restaurant, the bar, etc. That, too, is still shuttered. Pretty soon, the grass will grow through the parking lot. I guess we can chalk that up, along with our $70 million golf club.

Bring back Paul Krugman
The North County Times used to carry a lot of articles by Paul Krugman, who just won the Nobel Prize in economics. We are in an unparalleled economic crisis and there have been no articles by him or others of his stature. Krugman, David Cay Johnson and others have all been on countless TV programs. So where is NCT?
Oct. 17 was a red-letter day for letter-writers. My compliments to John-Erik Nilsson, Morris Shechet, Emanuil Shvarts, Doug Olive, Robert Borden and Joseph Kraatz especially.

We need the high-voltage lines
All this talk on high-voltage power transmission lines. I am 76 years old and my first love is electronics. ... I was a smoke jumper for the USFS and have 12 years as a Navy electronics tech. I have never observed a spark from an HV transmission line start a fire. I have observed big sparks on lines, but all of these sparks burn out long before they even get close to the brush.
The big reason for electric wires in the air is heat. Even with wires in the ground, though the ground is cool, there is no way to stop heat build-up in the ground. With wires in the air, heat generated is dispatched by the surrounding air.
Most of the solar homes and other solar installations use the power company as a place to store the energy. You could say they use the power company as a battery to store electricity.
All you eco-nuts, wake up. We need the HV transmission lines ... San Onofre and SDG&E.

Rule of law doesn't apply to politicians
In the Oct. 21 paper, Mr. O'Reilly laments the chicanery in Washington by the politicians ("The betrayal factor"). There has also been an outcry to "restore confidence in government." A good start is to snap Mr. Dodd, Mr. Frank and anyone else who had anything to do with this scam out of their posh offices and jail them.
I know the mantras: "Technically they did nothing illegal," "The rule of law," "The slippery slope of dictatorship," and etc. However, there is also the slippery slope of anarchy and even nihilism if these things go unpunished and unchecked.
If someone robs a 7-Eleven and is caught and convicted, they get punished. These clowns wrecked large corporations and ruined people's retirement. Seems to me like all we are doing is restocking the larder so they can rob it again.
Jamie Gorelick, she of Janet Reno fame who built the "wall" so the CIA and the FBI couldn't share information about terrorism, this lady seems involved in the scam somehow. Exactly who is she, and how and why did she get her paw in the till? Rule of law, indeed! Depends on who you are. What a crock!

Please temper headlines about the economy
I have written before to your illustrious newspaper, but on this occasion, I am pleading with your august selves more than to your readers, although I think most of them will agree with me. Here goes: It's the heading, "Fearing recession, Dow drops 514 points," subhead, "Reports of weak earnings stoke Wall Street sell-off."
I'll come right to the point: Please make this more positive; e.g., "Despite recent recovery, Dow drops 514," subhead, "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread" (i.e., selling off too soon, "shorting"). Something like that.
I have a Ph.D. in economics and an M.A. in that field. I'm terrified of editors, but this time, I feel I must overcome my fear. Please help solve our problem. I don't want you to put a spin on news, but I do know that many of my friends feel as I do.

With freedom comes responsibility
Freedom to express is a threat for those who have closed-believer minds, built with fears of burning in hell forever. Why the word "responsible" is not included with freedom in our culture, I can't explain. Even politicians don't use the word "responsible" when they talk about freedom. Using the words "responsible-freedom" will help others to understand the proper meaning of freedom.
The revolutionaries, trying to change this country and the world by force and threats, do not realize the responsibilities and respect they need toward others, and that patience, reason and communications will solve most concerns. Freedom lovers need to take responsibility into consideration.
A fundamentalist friend of mine once said so many hateful things in his letter to me about the love of god, and the hellfire coming, that I told him that I did not know whether he was selling love or hate. He apologized later. Sometimes we get carried away with our deeply imbedded hate that has been passed down to us by our religions. With responsible forethought, we can avoid this automatic response of our brains. This is why e-mail is a more practical way of communicating â“â“ we usually think before we type.

Try out the fitness center
We are writing to say thank you to the Junior Seau Foundation, the city of Oceanside and the Boys & Girls club for supporting the Junior Seau Fitness Center. Every year, donations and budgets are difficult to manage, but we are thankful the Junior Seau Fitness Center has been considered an important priority in our community, as it supports the senior community and the after-school students with a safe and comfortable place to exercise. From 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, the senior community (which we are part of) can enjoy a comprehensive workout for our special needs. Dale, who is the fitness coordinator and trainer, is very knowledgeable in helping us design a routine. ... During the afternoons and after school, the high school students use the fitness center . ...
If you are in the over-55 age group and have not yet checked out this great facility on Country Club Lane in our community, I hope you will. With the donations from the Junior Seau Foundation, the city of Oceanside, the Boys & Girls Club and the nominal yearly fee from the participants, this is a gem in our community that we hope you will come and enjoy and support.

State shows bias in honoring Marine
On Oct. 19, a Pendleton Marine died In Iraq. On Oct. 22, another Marine died in Afghanistan. The first Marine died in a non-combat incident, while the second one died in a combat situation while on his third tour of duty in the Middle East.
Gov. Arnold recognized the first Marine's service with one day of the flag in Sacramento to be flown at half-staff. Not a great honor, but an honor nevertheless. The second Marine, holder of two Purple Hearts and a resident of Santa Ana, a California resident, was virtually ignored. One wonders why the difference in these two cases until it is noticed that the first Marine was an attractive young woman from Ohio, not a California resident. The second Marine was possibly of Asian descent, or not, but still a good Marine.
For the record, I am a 30-year Navy veteran, 'Nam and Korea, and I believe I can notice bias when it occurs. Arnold, shame on you!

Top-rated adventure strip has disappeared
What happened to your "Prince Valiant" comic strip? One of the main reasons I enjoyed your Sunday edition was that you included "Prince Valiant" in your selection of comics.
I have been following "Prince Valiant" since I was a kid, and was really surprised and disappointed you dropped the strip. As for knighthood adventures during the time of King Arthur, I had always considered it a top-rated adventure comic strip.

Business should not end because of tragedy
I am writing in ... concerning the rebuilding of Dad's Cafe. I think it is a great idea to rebuild the cafe because it's someone's business and you can't stop your business because of a tragedy.
The kidnapping of Danielle Van Dam occurred the same night that her mother, Brenda Van Dam, was seen at Dad's Cafe, along with David Westerfield, the convicted kidnapper. Because of this coincidence, Dad's Cafe became a tourist attraction, which I don't necessarily understand. Dad's Cafe had nothing to do with the kidnapping, which is why I think it's great that the owners are rebuilding the cafe after it burnt down.
The tragedy of Danielle Van Dam was close to the hearts of many living in San Diego. Danielle Van Dam will always be remembered, but the restoration of Dad's Cafe should not be damaged by something it had nothing to do with, a mere coincidence. Hopefully, the council will approve the rebuilding of Dad's Cafe so that it has the opportunity to live up to its already famous expectations, while still respecting Danielle Van Dam and her family.

To a brave and caring woman
My husband and I would like to thank the lady who came forward to defend our daughter and to report the verbal attack that occurred at the drugstore in Carmel Ranch on the evening of Sept. 28 by one of her co-workers. Your coming to the defense of my daughter helped make her complaints credible.
Since we do not know you to personally thank you, we are hoping you read this thank-you note and know how much we appreciate your actions.

Don't get fooled again by TCS
Let's not get fooled again. Seriously. The Transportation Corridor Systems (aka toll road builders), wants to be "loaned" (would we ever be repaid?) federal tax dollars. TCS has said they will not use public funds, but now that they are having financial difficulties, they are looking to taxpayers for a bailout.
TCS is the group now spending who-knows-how-much trying to shove down our throats the Foothill-South Toll Road to nowhere (and roaring through San Onofre State Park.)
Times have changed. The ever-rising price of gasoline is shifting our driving habits, so freeway congestion is in a pattern of reversal. No wonder the (for-profit) toll road builders are suffering; they are attempting to palm off on us a product whose time has passed. The Department of Transportation must not approve this plan.

Ace wrote on Nov 1, 2008 3:32 AM:This post goes out to DD Wiz.
I want to comment on an exchange you had yesterday with Bill about Obamas tax plan. I dont post often but his tax plan will effect me as I earn a far greater income than what Obama defines as rich. I employ 430 blue collar workers in San Diego and also 45 management positions. This is the only issue I will respond to. Im responding because you claimed to quote tax experts who say that Obamas plan will help the middle class.
Your first mistake was listening to a tax man instead of an entrepreneur.
Should Obamas plan pass, Im moving my plant to Tijuana and laying off 430 workers who average $44,000.00 per year.
The reasons are simple too.
You see, by automating and moving my plant south, I avoid all types of expenses AND increase my productivity. This fattens my profit margin to make up for what Obama plans to steal from me. No payroll taxes, an average salary of $75 per week on each employee, fewer employees due to automation, no union demands, no strikes, no prevailing wages forced on me, etc. I employ union labor and have been squeezed by union demands that I have, in the past paid for out of increased productivity. However, Obamas plan would kill that. Right now, I must invest 84 cents to get back a dollar. Thats a 16% net margin. By moving my plant, I will increase my margin to about 43% net. This allows me to invest the same amount of money but instead of making .16 on each dollar, I will net .43 cents. By investing what I do now, I will make up Obamas tax increases. Obama will make my margin too thin for my liking so Im going to take action to counter it. Somehow, I doubt that the bean counters you cite mentioned the behavioral modificfation brought on by adjusting the tax rate on me. When all is said and done, I will not be effected one way but 430 San Diegans will lose their jobs.
There are fatal flaws in your naive thinking.
Liberals are assuming that I wont do anything about it and youre wrong. In fact, theres nothing you can do to stop me. I like the down ecomomy so Im not hurt. I bottom feed on stocks sold by panicking novice investors and am buying apartment buildings too.
Im not hurt at all.
Had Obamas ideas had any legitimcay, Karl Marx would have succeeded and he didnt.
The only way to counter such a move is to leave things alone as I am not moving due to a weak economy. Right now, I am selling to a thriving export market brought on by the weak dollar worldwide.
No ma'am I am forced to do it if Obama gets his way.
Im not giving up my wealth to amyone.
His "incentives" for me staying here in America pale compared to what I will get by moving to TJ. Oh sure, you liberals will chastise me even more than you do unaware of the fact that you voted for it. You will do that no matter what since yoju see the worlkd as "unfair" so you remedy it with more unfairness. Then you will call me greedy and all that stuff but when the dust settles, there will be 430 San Diegans out of work.
I wont be effected in any way.
The reasons that I do it are no different than why people have locks on their doors and an alarm in their homes.
Im just protecting what is mine.
Did your bean counter experts tell you about this scenario?
Obamas plan wont do anything but shrink the GDP.
How naive are you?

The post from "Ace" (3:32am) sounds about as convincing as "Joe" the "Plumber" (who is not plumber, had already donated to McCain so wasn't the "undecided" he had misrepresented himself to be, doesn't even pay his taxes anyway, and isn't even named "Joe").
"Ace" can do whatever he wants with his "plant" (if he really even owns one). He can show that he knows nothing about business by spiting himself on the prospect of what he imagines will be coming in the FUTURE rather than the present reality, but most business owners will wait and see what actually happens, take advantage of the $3,000 per DOMESTIC employee tax credit and avoid the loss of deductibility for moving to another country.
Of course, "Ace" doesn't care about facts.
He responds emotionally, from the gut, like "shoot from the hip" McCain and Bush.
And since he doesn't actually have any valid issues, all he can do is call names.
He equates Obama's policy of stimulating regulated entrepreneurial markets with the theories of Karl Marx, which are completely opposite.
Marx's economic system has NEVER succeeded.
Full deregulatory lassiez faire economic anarchy has NEVER succeeded.
The kind of regulated entrepreneurial market system of Democrats has ALWAYS succeeded and has produced the greatest economic successes ever witnessed in all of human history, with or without the emotional reactions of those like "Ace" or the equally phony "Joe" the "Plumber."

Oh Chuck wrote on Nov 1, 2008 11:41 AM:Chuck says liberals want unilateral withdrawal from Iraq. This is -- surprise! -- another yahoo lie. Obama and the rest of us want the US troops out of Iraq, but it's not unilateral: so do about 70+% of the people of Iraq; so does the Iraqi government. Chuck forgets that one of the many reasons Bush gave for the Iraq fight was about bringing democracy to that country. Well, there it is. Mission accomplished. But that was never Chuck's mission (nor Bush's, obviously, nor McCain's, obviously). The Chuck/Bush/McCain mission was about oil, or about establishing permanenty bases there (both rejected by the Iraqi people and government), but more than anything else, the Chuck/Buch/McCain mission was to get the political advantage of soothing the macho American image that's been sore since Vietnam. Unfortunately, liberals, Iraqis, the Iraqi government, and the entire stinking world finds this a repulsive mission. Sorry, kiddies. You are, and will always be, losers, because your mission is the mission of losers.

Good for Ace! He is doing what is best for his company and that is as it should be. His market is export thus where he makes his product is immaterial to his customers.
His workers, on the other hand, are the ones who will be truly affected by Obama. Ace is not the only American company that will move.
If, on the other hand, McCain wins and cuts business taxes to the Irish level (for example) and that will keep companies here.
For Obama to stop companies from moving he will have to take them over and put government employees in charge of them. He plans to draft the people who run the Post Office to run the companies he takes over to keep them from leaving the U.S.A.
As usual, DD has no idea what he is talking about. After all, he thinks that FDR eliminated 19 percent unemployment by utilizing Mussolini-type government payrolls and projects like the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Projects Administration that paid artists to paint Soviet-style art on public buildings.
I must admit, however, that DD finally realizes that it was preparation for war and war orders from Great Britain that eliminated Depression unemployment not FDR's government payrolls.

If he does automate, he will not only increase his productivity, but it will also drive up his profitability.
My own experience in TJ manufacturing is that, while in the US you could pay your people $8-10 dollars an hour, or more.
In Mexico, that's a day.
There will be the inconveniences, the infrastructure, although most other American plants that have moved in, have upgraded. There is the problem with security, kidnapping is again on the rise. That could easily be solved by a few Blackwater employees back from Iraq. You might want to keep some cash on hand, just in case.
On the "No payroll taxes", well, kind of, sort of... the Mexican Government acts like an employment agency, in that, when you pay your employee $8 a day, they also get a cut of equal amount. So the price of employee per day is actually $16.
His margins seem appropiate, 84 cents to get back a dollar. His increased
margin to about 43% net, that's probably close.
But his main point is well taken. As business people, we'll take our lumps if we believe they are deserved, or part of the process.
But, we will NOT be anyone's personal "whipping boy." Which is what NObama does. He equates us, with the worst America has to offer, and then insults our intelligence with this petty $3K hiring deduction.
It will cost me about $5-6,000 just to hire someone, bring them up to speed, make sure all documentation they provide is correct, accurate. Place them on payroll, begin deducting taxes, plus adding them to benefits.
And that's a new hire, no experience, with a high school diploma. Those who cost me more to hire, cost me more in the hiring.
It's a joke.
So, I don't blame Ace. He's just doing what's right for him, which is part of the invisible hand as spoken of by Adam Smith. Remember the other day when I said: "Trickle down does work, has worked, and is still working", it's just not happening inside the US.

But now that my wealth is being assaulted and pillaged, Im going to take action to counter it. I am not going to stay loyal to America when the voters are about to sell me out down the river.
Im going to move.
I can assure you that I am no fake.
Reardons points are very well taken as they ring true.
I paid my employees well, I provided health care and dental care, I gave 2 weeks paid vacations, and I built a gym and spa at my facility for my employees use. However, apparently America thinks that me and my ilk are expendable and didnt pay or offer enough. Now, they want me to share my wealth when I already have.
More, more, and more!!!!!
Now, those voters can test their skills on the open market without the help of my ilk. This isnt about payback, its about asset protection from populist plunder. Despite the liberal urban legend, I have no social obligation to provide jobs, especially when my assets are about to be raided.
My obligation is to me and my family.
I contribute more money to charity than most earn in one year as I contribute to the Crippled Childrens Fund and the Disabled American Veterans.
Those are by choice though.
Obamas plan isnt so Im going to do something about it.
What are you going to do about it liberals?
Whats your plan for forcing me to stay in America?
DD Wiz cites a miniscule $3000.00 tax credit for keeping employees domestic.
Sweetheart, that doesnt even offset the cost of health care and perks. Thats an insult to me considering Obama is going to take it back anyway. Thats a fraction of what I would recover on my own by moving. You can call me a fraud all you want but this is going to happen if Obama gets in. I have had it up to my ears with the union taking credit for benefits that I willfully paid. They go back to the rank and file and claim I resisted when I didnt and demonize me. I have had union bosses walk away from ther table just to posture after I was willing to give them EVERYTHING THEY WERE ASKING. This was done to demonize me and take credit for what I was willingly giving. The demogogues in the media, the Democrat party and the unions have driven me to this with their class warefare rhetoric.
Obama is the final nail in the coffin and Ive had enough.
Obamas plan assaults the middle class but I will get the blame.
However, I wont be effected.
But the middle class wont be either since apparently I dont exist.
The entrepreneurs that do exist will happily allow their wealth to be raided.
How naive are some people?
However, I still think McCain is going to win!
If Obama gets in then America loses.

The post from "sdraoul" (12:57pm) just makes things up and misrepresents others' views when the facts simply don't go his way.
He says, referring to me, "DD finally realizes that it was preparation for war and war orders from Great Britain that eliminated Depression unemployment not FDR's government payrolls."
This is simply a blatant and utterly dishonest fabrication.
While "sdraoul" has lied many times, this is one of the most blatant I have ever seen, and completely misrepresents my views.
I never said anything that could be remotely construed to this conclusion.
Here are the FACTS that I have repeatedly asserted:
The Depression was cured by FDR'S economic policy that reversed unemployment long before any hint of World War II.
To repeat, using unemployment figures FROM BEFORE WORLD WAR II I have cited before from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:
1933 - 24.95% (first year of FDR presidency)
1934 - 21.7%
1935 - 20.2%
1936 - 16.9%
1937 - 14.3%
Everything prior to this point is before the earliest hints of war in Europe and cannot be attributed to the war with even the most outrageous stretch of the imagination (or truth) for which "sdraoul" is so famous -- or infamous.
1938 - 19.0% (Americans get economic jitters as war clouds threaten Europe)
1939 - 17.2% (Germany invades Poland in September 1939 to start WWII)
1940 - 14.6%
1941 - 9.9% (last full year before American involvement in WWII)
"sdraoul" is full of insults and hateful invective, saying others (in this case, me) have "no idea what [they] are talking about." It is clearly obvious that "sdraoul" either does not know what HE is talking about or, if he does, he is lying. He is either ignorant or lying. Which is it, "sdraoul"?
Have you no shame, Mr. "sinverguenza" Raoul?
