REGION: Four Marines arrested in local slayings
Detectives say motive appears to be financial gain through robbery
By JOHN HALL - Staff Writer | ∞
FRENCH VALLEY ---- Four Marines have been arrested in connection with the slayings of a fellow Marine and his wife in their French Valley home last month, authorities said.
Jan Pawek Pietrzak, 24, and his 26-year-old wife, Quiana, were found slain inside their home in the 31000 block of Bermuda Street on the morning of Oct. 15.
Both were killed by gunshots to the head, according to the Riverside County coroner's office.
Authorities said Monday, for the first time, that both victims were found bound and gagged in the family room of their two-story home.
The couple had married in August and had only lived in the home for a couple of months, friends and neighbors have said.
Two of the four arrested Marines worked in the same unit as Pietrzak and all four were stationed at Camp Pendleton, Riverside County sheriff's Lt. John Schultz, of the department's Central Homicide Unit, said Monday.
All four men admitted to their involvement in the crime and the motive appears to be financial gain, Schultz said, without elaborating further.
One of the four men arrested, Pvt. Kesaun Kedron Sykes, 21, has been booked at Southwest Detention Center, just a few miles from where the slayings took place.
Sykes was booked on suspicion of two counts of murder, home invasion robbery and sexual penetration with a foreign object, according to jail records. He was being held without the possibility of bail, jail records state.
The other three men are in custody in the brig at Camp Pendleton, Schultz said.
They were taken into custody by Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigators and have been identified as Lance Cpl. Tyrone Miller, 20, originally of North Carolina; Pvt. Emrys John, 18, originally of Maryland; and Pvt. Kevin Darnell Cox, 20, originally of Tennessee.
When sheriff's deputies first arrived at the victims' home, they found some areas inside had been ransacked. There also was an unsuccessful attempt to start a small fire inside the house in an apparent effort to destroy evidence, authorities said.
On Monday afternoon, after meeting with homicide investigators, prosecutors with the Riverside County district attorney's office agreed to file murder charges against all four men, Schultz said.
Arrest warrants will be sought for the three men in custody at Camp Pendleton and homicide investigators will request the three be released to them for prosecution in Riverside County, the lieutenant said.
As the investigation into the deaths of Jan and Quiana Pietrzak progressed, homicide investigators spoke to relatives, associates and co-workers of both victims, Schultz said.
"Investigators believed there were multiple suspects involved and there existed a high probability they were linked to Sgt. Jan Pietrzak's background at Camp Pendleton," Schultz stated in a news release.
Working with NCIS investigators, sheriff's homicide investigators served numerous search warrants on Camp Pendleton and in surrounding communities, Schultz said.
Numerous items of evidence were found linking the four Marines to the slayings, the lieutenant said.
Jan Pietrzak was assigned to the Third Marine Aircraft Wing at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, military officials said last month.
Pietrzak was a helicopter airframe mechanic who enlisted in March 2003, according to Marine Corps officials. He was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and was deployed to Iraq from July 2005 to February 2006, officials said.
Quiana Faye Jenkins-Pietrzak worked for the last year and a half as a health education assistant, the deputy director of the Riverside County Department of Public Health said last month.
Jenkins-Pietrzak worked in the department's black infant health program, an outreach to pregnant and parenting black women, officials said.

Cynical Jim wrote on Nov 4, 2008 12:31 AM:Are you kidding me? TPD had NOTHING to do with this. French Valley is in the county dolts. Another prime example of TVUSD alumni. And you bet MPD would have had these guys within the hour. It ain't bragging if it's true.
Cynical but WRONG Jim wrote on Nov 4, 2008 7:27 AM:So, Einstein. Tell me, who did crack the code on this one? Was it the Riverside County Sheriff's Office from Auld Road? Who do you think it was. Enlighten all of us, T.J. Hooker.
And, as far as MPD...they are no better or no worse than any other department. How can you say they would have had these guys within the hour. How dumb are you about police work? It would have taken longer than an hour for the warrants to be signed and then, too, to get to Pendleton or the Oceanside area and coordinate with those officials. There has to be other, less public ways, of making yourself look stupid.
Right?
Writer of Cynical Jim wrote on Nov 4, 2008 7:38 AM:Is someone a little angry, bitter, or supporting a slight chip on their shoulder? There's nothing wrong with a painstakingly, thorough, and time consuming investigation. Because the animals of this great country have rights greater than their victims in many instances, the judicial process can't be rushed. There's nothing wrong with a slow investigation if that's what it takes to bring the right preditors to justice the first time. Oh and by the way, Temecula Police Department and Riverside Sheriff's Department are "of one." Temecula Police Department had a lot to do with the successful investigation of this horrific crime.
Friend to Q and P wrote on Nov 4, 2008 8:55 AM:Look, I know a few of you seem to want to fight about who solved the case...and I would like to know who to thank, not which department is better or whatever it is your fighting about. Two lives were lost and friends and family are grieving. Please don't turn their deaths into a reason to bicker. At the end of the day, two of my friends are still dead and we are all still deeply saddened. Also, the fact that it [allegedly] was marines makes this whole situation even more hard to take. I hope that at the very least, justice will be served.

Vet wrote on Nov 4, 2008 9:26 AM:One of the news shows just last week (I believe it was 20/20) ran a story about how many gang members are joining the military right now. Recruitment is down, so they are allowing these thugs to enlist. It also stated that they recruit other members into their gangs from within the military. It was a very disturbing report.
To Criminals wrote on Nov 4, 2008 11:04 AM:You have, quite obviously, never served. That's just a completely reckless and idiotic statement. What is it to imply? That there aren't gun/weapon happy rednecks in other parts of society? I only served 21 years, but I never met another Marine or member of some other service, that told me they joined because of their gun/weapon happy redneck-ness and for the opportunity to use and play with weapons and, yippee, the opportunity to realize their fetish and hurt people. Real Marines, those of us who have been there, hate war and what it does. However, we know that, at times, it's necessary and, even if some citizens feel that it is not; it is our duty and our charge to follow orders and do what the President orders us to do. We don't have to like it, we do it because we've been ordered to and we believe that it is for the benefit of our country and its citizens. Your characterization of what the military attracts is offense, at the very least. As I said earlier, the Corps, just like every other organization, has its 10 percent of knuckleheads and malcontents.

To timeout wrote on Nov 4, 2008 11:45 AM:Perhaps you are right. I was quite anoyed at all of the anti-Marine posts that the NCT posted this morning.
It is just a shame that the title of this story screams Marines.
So you see there is a lot more to this story.
I still think the NCT was wrong to pull the earlier posts.

As a mother, my heart goes out to the families.

There have been things mentioned that may have made some of us participating "uncomfortable", but this type of community discourse is valuable--again, at least in my opinion. NCT, as long as there is no vulgarity, profanity, threats....you know, the stuff contained in your Terms of Agreement and policies....let the citizenry post what they will. Most of them are opinions, only.
Guess who?
Yup. The old Master Guns...again
Semper Fi.
USMC Wife wrote on Nov 4, 2008 1:34 PM:I don't know why my comment was pulled. This crime has to do with thugs entering the Marine Corps, not USMC-created thugs. Past news stories already gave the unit they were from. That unit is a training unit. I haven't said anything that can't already be taken from articles already out there from this site and other sites. These guys weren't Marines "messed up" from Iraq. This story is going to get heated and issues pertaining to race and the military are going to come up since they are very significant factors involved in the crime. Shouldn't they be allowed to be discussed?
MVet wrote on Nov 4, 2008 1:40 PM:They (NCT) will allow you current post to stand because you only mentioned the Marine Corps and not "race".

A Friend wrote on Nov 4, 2008 7:41 PM:I will never forget recievibg the phone call about P and Q on that Wednesday October 15th. I had been to their house, the house that they put some much time, love, and effort into. I was at their beautiful wedding, and now I had to face the fact that I would be going to their funeral. Since finding out, I could do nothing but pray that whatever happened, happened to quickly for them to even come to grips with what was happening. That no longer seems to be the case. What happened in these 4 individuals lives for them to think that doing such an unthinkable act was okay? I expected the funeral to give me closure... it didn't. I thought that catching these people would give me closure... but it only raises more questions. I miss you both

This blog is an excellent example, as we are not even allowed to bring up the obvious.

The Marines that did this should be treated no better than enemy combatants. Even enemy combatants have more honor than these traitors. Shame on them!
