ESCONDIDO: Second driver in head-on wreck dies
By North County Times | ∞
ESCONDIDO ---- The second driver involved in a head-on crash in north Escondido earlier this week died Thursday, a spokesman for the county medical examiner's office said.
Javier Medrano, 20, died Thursday morning at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. He was taken to the hospital with traumatic head injuries Tuesday evening after his southbound sport utility vehicle veered into the northbound lane on North Centre City Parkway near Deer Springs Road and collided head-on with a minivan, the spokesman said. Both vehicles carried only their drivers.
The minivan's 56-year-old driver, Kathleen Joy Powell of Valley Center, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
The medical examiner's office did not know where Medrano lived.

Was there and animal or other object in the road? There where road flares put down in the road. Folks we live in a fire area DO NOT put flares down. The resultant fire could be worst than the accident.

Paul wrote on Nov 6, 2008 6:14 PM:To Dude,
yes there are other options. I was warned a couple of years ago by the CHP when I wanted to put down some flares at an accident scene. They had other options. Putting a car down the road either way, with lights on.
To Paul wrote on Nov 6, 2008 6:23 PM:Smart move...don't put down flares....let another car run into the wreck or the emergency workers.
God bless these families
MVet wrote on Nov 6, 2008 6:52 PM:I know this may sound cold to some, But the first question I must ask is did both drivers have a driver's license and insurance. And then go from there. The numbers don't lie.

Why didn't they just check his drivers license and where the car was registered to?

I personally would like to know if he was drinking and had a driver's license.
I feel sympathy for all of the previous posters as their comments are exactly like the comments posted for the other victim. Everyone has a family and friends, but if we do not tell the whole story then nothing will be gained, to help prevent needless tragedies in the future.

There is more to the story. Did he have a flat tire? Was his car in good mechanical condition? Did he fall asleep? Was he reaching for the radio or a drink? Was the driver licensed and insured?
People just don't veer out of their lane and strike and kill someone?
Is the public going to find out or will this story being buried like so many others? From what I have read so far the woman who was killed did no wrong except be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

MVet wrote on Nov 12, 2008 11:42 AM:If the driver(s) was an unlicensed, uninsured, or was drinking, the citizens of Escondido have a right to know.
H.. wrote on Nov 13, 2008 6:55 AM:All of u guys who are only thinking about the drivers license, insurance and all that are just plain stupid and cold hearted all that matters now is that there are two families that lost a loved one. Let them rest in peace and stop asking dumb ?'s.
We should support the families and pray that god gives them the strenght to accept they are gone.
