Hot springs topic for historical society
TEMECULA ---- Tony Guenther will speak when the Temecula Valley Historical Society meets at noon Friday. Guenther is the great-grandson of Fritz Guenther, the founder of the Guenther Murrieta Hot Springs Resort.
His family owned and managed the resort until it sold in 1970. Tony and his brothers and sister worked at the resort.
Guenther worked with Loretta Barnett, Rebecca Farnbach and Marvin Curran on the book "Images of America: Murrieta Hot Springs," which will be released Monday. He will tell some of the stories uncovered during research for the book.
The program be followed by the business meeting at 1 p.m.

Paletteers plan art show
LAKE ELSINORE ---- The Paletteers art group will hold its annual art show and sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Cultural Center.
Local artist will join club members in the free exhibition.

Marines birthday celebration slated
WILDOMAR ---- A celebration of the U.S. Marine Corps 233rd birthday will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at VFW Post 1508.
The event is cohosted by the VFW post and Marine Corps League Southwest Riverside County Detachment 1057.
Tickets cost $15, which includes dinner. They are available from the VFW post, 21180 Waite St., or officers of either organization.
There will be a sword cutting of the cake and a speaker.

Church plans craft fair

Free knitting workshop offered
MURRIETA ---- Peggy Hagberg will teach and demonstrate knitting techniques at a free workshop at 4 p.m. Monday at the Murrieta Public Library.
Knitters of all skill levels can learn the basics of knitting as well as techniques to move existing knitting projects to the next level.
It will be the first in a series of knitting classes to be held the second Monday of every other month.
The first 10 people to register will receive free knitting needles and yarn. All others must provide their own needles and yarn.

Western band, cowboy poet to perform
TEMECULA ---- The Golden Hill Ramblers and cowboy poet Mick Vernon will perform during the annual "Around Uncle Erle's Campfire" at 7 p.m. Saturday at Old Town Temecula Community Theater.
The performance is part of the Erle Stanley Gardner Mystery Weekend in Old Town.
Reminiscent of western swing bands of the 1930s and '40s, the Golden Hill Ramblers put out an authentic country sound.
Vernon is the author of "The Lyrical Lawman Rides," a book of cowboy poetry. Tickets cost $10.

Jewelry sale planned at hospital
SUN CITY ---- The Menifee Valley Medical Center Auxiliary will hold a two-day jewelry sale from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the hospital.
Merchandise will include watches, rings and necklaces, all priced at $5 plus sales tax. A portion of the proceeds go to the auxiliary for hospital projects.

Battle of the Bands participants sought
MURRIETA ---- Local bands can enter the annual New Year's Eve Battle of the Bands.
The competition will be held 10 p.m. to 2 p.m. New Year's Eve at Mulligan Family Fun Center. Cash and prizes will be awarded to the winners.
Bands wishing to compete must drop off tapes or CDs to Mulligan's by Monday.

Deaf bowling night Monday
LAKE ELSINORE ---- The monthly deaf bowling night will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Trevi Entertainment Center.
People with hearing impairments and American Sign Language students are invited. The cost is to bowl is $2 per game.
The event, to be held the second Monday of each month, is coordinated by group of ASL students who want to connect with deaf friends.

Empty cradle group to meet
TEMECULA ---- Empty Cradle, a support group for parents who have experienced the loss of a child to miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death, will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mary Phillips Senior Center.
Coping with the holidays will be the topic. There also will be refreshments and sharing circles.

Craft show upcoming
TEMECULA ---- Fairytale Festivals will have its 12th annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Show Thursday through Nov. 16 in the Temecula Town Center.

The sale will include furniture, books, videos, puzzles, household items, jewelry and craft supplies. Proceeds will be used for programs and activities at the center.

County will offer flu shots
SUN CITY ---- The county health agency is offering flu shots for seniors at various locations.
Shots are free to those 50 and older, as well as for high-risk younger adults and children with certain chronic health conditions.
While the shots will be given for free, a $5 donation is suggested.
Southwest County clinics will be: 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Simpson Senior Center, 302 E. Devonshire, Hemet; 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 17, Murrieta Senior Center, 41717 Juniper St.; 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 20, Kay Ceniceros Senior Center, 29995 Evans Road, Menifee; and 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 1, Anza Community Center, 56630 Highway 371.
Car service is offered for vehicles with a handicap sticker or placard in Murrieta and Sun City.

Seminars slated at Harveston
TEMECULA ---- A free fall prevention seminar will be offered at 1:45 p.m. Monday at Chateau at Harveston.
The event will be put on in conjunction with Visiting Angels.
The facility will also host a talk on "Beating the Holiday Blues" at 1:45 p.m. Thursday. Monica Crow will help people overcome things that can deplete their holiday spirit.

Coping with loss topic of talk

The workshop will offer support and education about surviving the holidays after suffering the loss of a loved one.

Lung association offers respiratory rally
MURRIETA ----The American Lung Association of California is will hold a Respiratory Rally from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at Rancho Springs Medical Center to help people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease learn how to better control their disease and help slow its progression.
Studies show many adults who are at risk for the disease do not know about COPD, the nation's fourth leading killer. COPD is a term that includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is mostly caused by smoking, but other risk factors include air pollution, second-hand smoke and occupational hazards such as chemicals, dust and fumes.
The conference is for people with COPD and their caregivers. It will feature medical speakers, motivational presenters, educational materials and breakout sessions.
The rally is also designed to encourage social interaction between people who share a common problem.

Weight loss competition offered
MURRIETA ---- A weight loss competition will begin Nov. 18.
The 12-week program will include coaching, nutritional information and a body analysis.
The entry fee is $39, with part paid out to the winners. A portion also will be donated to Fit Kids Foundation for the Prevention of Childhood Obesity.

Adult day care program accepting clients
HEMET ---- Daybreak Adult Day Services is accepting clients with Alzheimer's, other dementias or physical limitations.
Daybreak offers a secure and structured environment for people with physical and memory impairments. Clients are provided with activities and social interaction, assistance with medication, nutrition and wellness monitoring.
It also offers individual and group support and education for caregivers. Group training topics include care resources, legal and financial planning, physical care needs, safety, stress reduction and coping skills.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost is $50 per day.
Daybreak is operated by Family Service Association and is funded in part by the Riverside County Office on Aging.

Senior driving course offered
The AARP offers an ongoing driver safety program for mature drivers. The eight-hour course is offered for drivers 50 and older at various locations throughout Southwest County.

Senior Center plans trips
MURRIETA ---- The Temecula Senior Service Center is offering two trips.
The group will visit Viejas Casino on Nov. 17. The cost is $6, which includes a $5 coupon for lunch. The bus will leave at 8:30 a.m. and return around 6 p.m.
There also will be a Christmas party Dec. 10 to 12 at the Riverside Hotel in Laughlin, Nev. The cost is $117 per person single occupancy or $107 double occupancy. It includes three free buffets and a party with music, a buffet and prizes.

Golden Years group to travel
TEMECULA ---- Seniors' Golden Years of Temecula Valley has a number of day and overnight trips planned in coming months.
