ENCINITAS: Muir wins seat on school board
Candidate had tried twice to earn seat on panel

ENCINITAS ---- After two unsuccessful attempts to win a seat on the Encinitas Union School District's board, candidate Maureen "Mo" Muir found success the third time around.
"I think I basically ran a well-run campaign," she said Friday as she discussed her victory in this week's election.
Muir, 47, captured one of two open school board seats ---- the one held by Shannon Kuder, who decided not to run for re-election. Meanwhile, longtime incumbent Carol Skiljan, 59, was re-elected to the other seat.
Skiljan received 39.27 percent of the vote, while Muir collected 38.26 percent. The third candidate, attorney Mary K. Page, had 22.47 percent.
Skiljan and Page had run as slate, while Muir stressed during her campaign that she didn't agree with some of the district's recent decisions.
Muir opposes the district's plans to develop the former Pacific View School into homes and offices, saying the district shouldn't sell or trade the land.
She is also the parent of a child who attended the Theory Into Practice Academy, which the district's board unanimously voted to close last summer.
Muir and Skiljan said Friday that they didn't think either of those controversies gave Muir the edge in the November election.
Muir, who serves on the city's library board and is married to the city's fire chief, Mark Muir, said she thinks her high vote count is a direct result of going door to door meeting voters in the weeks before the election.
"I walked to 5,000 homes," she said, adding that she hasn't done that in past campaigns.
Muir said she took her 8-year-old son, Scotland, with her, so people could see how much she cared about local schools.
Now that she's won the election, he's trying to get her to add spaghetti to the school lunch menu, she said with a laugh.
Skiljan, who has served 16 years on the school board and runs a suicide prevention program, said she attributes Muir's success to two things: Name recognition from her two previous campaigns, and lots of campaign money.
"I have to say I'm not surprised because she had name recognition ---- Mary (Page) didn't have name recognition," Skiljan said.
Muir's mailers, signs and her name listed first on the ballot also made a difference, Skiljan said.
Muir estimated that she spent $8,000 to $10,000 on her campaign. Skiljan spent about $7,300. Page said she spent less than $5,000 and did not go door-to-door campaigning.
Page added that she was disappointed that Muir collected such a large percentage of the vote, given that Muir didn't attend the only forum held for Encinitas Union School District candidates.
Encinitas Union Elementary School District covers southern Carlsbad and much of Encinitas, but not the Cardiff area. The district has nine elementary schools, including four in Carlsbad.
Muir and Skiljan will be sworn in Dec. 9.

Susie wrote on Nov 8, 2008 11:42 AM:Boy, what poor losers! Couldn't they just say that maybe the public actually like her ideas better? Trying to blame Mo's win on her place on the ballot and her name recognition is purely ignorant. I voted for Mo because I actually met her and agreed with her ideas.
Mike H. wrote on Nov 8, 2008 11:43 AM:I am unexplainably thrilled that Mo won this race. I am digging out my straw hat, and getting ready for her to open the next charter school. I'll be there to "support" her 100%! Hire me, Mo!
Happy in Encinitas wrote on Nov 8, 2008 12:05 PM:Maybe "Mo" can help the rest of the school board understand why various styles of schools provide a more comprehensive service for our district. Charter schools can be helped and supported for the benefit of local students. My children are not served by the very large Encinitas public schools, so my tax dollars are wasted while I pay for private school. In the future, maybe families who like the smaller school model will have some charter alternatives. Go Mo! You have a great deal of community support.
Sour Grapes Page wrote on Nov 8, 2008 12:19 PM:"Sour grapes" Page didn't walk to even one home to get her ideas out. Maybe Mo's name was first on the ballot-but yours was on the sign and mailer with the most popular incumbent.... She goes to one event (The Forum) and thinks she should be handed the EUSD. Obviously, 7,000 voters didn't agree.

PATHIETIC wrote on Nov 8, 2008 2:55 PM:The school board including the superintendant worked on a whisper campaign thoughout the election (I know because I attended a site meeting with staffers) - OBVIOUSLY NOT VERY EFFECTIVE.
Mo's first order of business should be to depose the KING. The people have spoken - 15,000 voters (7,000 more than Ms. Sour Grape Page) and 200 hundred less than Grandma Skiljan.
VERY IMPRESSIVE MS. MO...

To Page wrote on Nov 8, 2008 8:05 PM:Too bad that Page was expecting to be elected by hanging onto the shirt tails of Skijan. Too bad there were 2 seats open. If there had only been one, and MO was running against Skijan, I'll bet Mo would have won. Skijan better think hard before letting someone drag her down in the next election. I am all for MO.
SUPER happy wrote on Nov 8, 2008 8:07 PM:I hope that Maureen will be brave enough to stand up to "The King" and let all the voices be heard of parents who have children that aren't getting their needs met. I swear that "The King" must be paying that school board to keep their mouths shut and dumbly nod their heads at whatever he says. Where are their voices???
To New Charter School wrote on Nov 8, 2008 8:41 PM:I think that Mo would want ANY change in this school district, as MANY parents as unhappy with what they get in Encinitas. As for the "gifted" charter: The school was built for EVERYONE, teaching at a high level to promote THINKERS in the community, rather than test takers. GO MO!!!!

Petty Skiljan wrote on Nov 8, 2008 9:01 PM:How petty and small of Skiljan to say that Maureen Muir won because of "lots of money" and "name recognition".She *worked* to get there. And Page who thought she could win by only attending a forum made up of mostly teachers and administrators(well said, "Sour Grapes Page"!)! Muir got votes from REAL PEOPLE, not FRIENDS of the board members!! Way to go Maureen Muir!
Closed Door Meetings wrote on Nov 8, 2008 10:09 PM:Say goodbye to all the secret closed doors meetings by the school board now that Mo is there. Skiljan must be seething with the new mandate from the voters. King will be gone in 2 years after the next election. Good thing he got that huge $$$ severence package just in time.
read the article wrote on Nov 8, 2008 10:21 PM:Anyone notice that Muir and Skiljan AGREED that the so called "controversies" (PV and TIP) DID NOT give her an edge? Muir's wanted on the board for 10 years. She ran a sucessful campaign. It's one thing to promise things during a campaign as a challenger, its another thing to actually serve and find out you need to what's best for 5500+ students and their families and the taxpayers of the district

Pretty impressive, when you think of it!
I hope they both can work together for our children.
I do have to say

Suzanne wrote on Nov 9, 2008 9:30 PM:Please, if you're going to post comments on getting a good education, use proper grammar. I hope Mo WILL be good for the EUSD, I wish her the best. But we need to make sure our charter schools represent our population and aren't just for a select few. I'm not sure that TIP fit that bill. My students are getting a wonderful education in Encinitas and they are both "gifted," whatever that may mean.

Lucky to be first on the ballot, oh yeah. You are going to have a terrible time. There should be a penalty for EVERY meeting you don't attend!
