PREP FOOTBALL: Ramona knocks upstart Westview down a peg

RANCHO PENASQUITOS ---- After switching leagues before the season, the Westview High football team found itself in the midst of a Valley League power struggle that saw the top four teams enter Friday night's play with a combined 29-3 record.
The Wolverines have been one of the big surprises of the season, but the upstart team found out how difficult it can be to keep up with the front-runners. A fast start in the passing lanes was overcome by a rugged Ramona running game as the No. 6 Bulldogs prevailed for a 40-30 victory.

Ryan Morgan ran for three touchdowns in the second half and finished with 167 yards on 25 carries to help the Bulldogs rally from a 27-14 first-half deficit.
"I don't know what happened in the second half, but we just didn't get it done," said Westview coach Mike Woodward, whose team lost for only the second time in nine games. "It was a great crowd, it was Senior Night, but for whatever reason, we couldn't close the deal.
"Ramona is a tough team, and we just ran out of bullets."
The Wolverines (7-2, 3-2) came out firing bombs in the first half. After missing on his first three attempts, quarterback Tommy Hansen lit up the scoreboard with four touchdown passes. Three of those scores went to receiver Steven Sousa, covering 63, 93 and 21 yards. The last of them gave the hosts a 27-14 lead with 1:32 left in the first half.
But Ramona (8-1, 4-1) closed the halftime margin to seven when quarterback Ian Hunt connected with Mike Head on a 22-yard scoring pass with 36 seconds left.
Ramona dominated the second half with its running game. Morgan tied the score on a 10-yard run with 1:55 left in the third quarter, and an interception by free safety Seth Drake set up Morgan's 11-yard run for the go-ahead score on the first play of the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs' defense also put more pressure on Hansen, who was sacked three times.
"We knew we had to bounce back after our first loss," said Bulldogs senior co-captain Kevin Guglielmetti, who had two sacks against the Wolverines. "We didn't play up to our standards last week (a 16-13 loss to Valley Center), but we came back and played hard tonight with a good team effort."
Hunt connected on his first seven passes and finished 13-of-16 for 126 yards. Joey Dambrose added 95 yards rushing on 17 carries as the Bulldogs amassed 306 yards on the ground to offset a 328-yard passing night by Hansen.
"This was the ultimate team win," said coach Damon Baldwin, whose Bulldogs will host unbeaten and top-ranked Oceanside next week for the Valley League championship. "Everybody played their role, and that's what we'll need against Oceanside."

If our defense can regain the form they had up until the last couple of games, we might shake things up in the playoffs. We won't go far however, if we can't stop the run or rush the passer...
Westview Fan wrote on Nov 8, 2008 9:05 AM:7-2 What a season so far. Way better then anyone expected so boys keep your heads up high and go out and defeat Mt Carmel next week. Defense definitely needs to step up. We saw #10 run right up the middle too many times last nite. Westview is a great bunch of kids and really good athletes so go out and prove it again next week.
rich wrote on Nov 8, 2008 10:52 AM:Why doesn't Westview stick with what works? Sousa dominates the game in the first half, was open consistently in the second and was totally ignored.
Westview Parent wrote on Nov 8, 2008 12:57 PM:What is going on? That Sousa kid goes wild in the first of every game. Then the QB doesn’t throw the ball to him again. He is open on almost every play. The QB seems to decide where his is going to throw in the huddle!!! Is it coaching or bad decision making by the QB? Get Sousa the ball!!!!!! That kid should have the ball in his hands as often as possible. He gets over 193 yards in the first three catches, then they only throw to him three more times the rest of the game!!!! COME ON!!! Let’s get back on track coach, QB…Go to the go to guy!!!!!!
wv player wrote on Nov 8, 2008 8:36 PM:well we just didnt get it done. romona is a good team, but we didnt play well in the second half. westview parent, get sousas' nuts. he is good, but we have other talented recievers. tommy does throw him the ball a lot. he has good first halfs, and then the other team cracks down on him, allowing for our other recievers to get open. stop bashing tommy. and if you actualy watched what was going on on the field you would realize that its not possible for tommy to decide where he is throwing in the huddle.
WV Fan wrote on Nov 9, 2008 12:09 AM:Hey WV Parent. Did you actually watch the game? The QB doesn't call the plays so if you have a problem then take it up with the coaching staff. The comment that was posted shows a good example of the opposite of the meaning of teamwork. A team isn't made up of one individual but a group that works together that creates a common bond. The Westview team has a lot of talent and everyone is looking forward to the playoffs!
keep in mind wrote on Nov 9, 2008 3:36 AM:westview is in a league in which they don't have to play Lcc or Poway, Rb, or Torrey Pines anymore. What do you think your record would be in the old league?
Westview Parent wrote on Nov 9, 2008 8:49 AM:WV Player,
I did actually watch what was going on down on the field. I have been to every varsity game for the last four years . Nobody is bashing Tommy. You don’t have to throw Sousa the ball to get it in his hands. Against San Marcos, you put him in motion and handed him the ball. You also used to motion to get him open. It is very true, Musco and Barclay are very good receivers. In fact without their after the catch running skills, the QB would not have all those yards. Its ten yard passes, then Sousa, Musco, and Barclay take it down field all those yards. The bottom line is, Sousa is the biggest offensive weapon you have. Use it!!! And “BEAT Mt. CARMEL”!!!!!!!!!!
To Westview Parent wrote on Nov 9, 2008 10:57 AM:Get a grip!! There is more then one player on the field. You CAN NOT always throw or hand off the ball to the same player. The other team is not dumb they know who to watch and will nail him every time. Be glad that other guys are getting the ball.
RBpirate4Life.. wrote on Nov 9, 2008 12:08 PM:To "KEEP IN MIND"..what are you trying to say, Westview is in a weak league?? I believe Valley League is the toughest league this year. They have 4 outstanding teams who were all undefeated until they met eachother. Imagine if we were in your league, what will your record be??? Westview is having a great year. Poway had a fantastic year last year but I think they would've lost to Oceanside if they were in the same league. Give credit where is due and don't hate on football programs that are having a successful year. Have a nice day and the beat goes on...
Hey Westview Parent wrote on Nov 9, 2008 12:33 PM:Westview doesn't use a huddle. How could the QB decide who he's throwing to "in the huddle". If you think he has time to decide who he is throwing to as he is litsening to the coach, then shouting out the signals, examining the defense, and calling for the snap, you should go out and try that yourself. It can't be done. He is, however, very very good at going through his progressions.
Ramona went to cover 2 in the second half and had a safety keying on our bigtime WR. That made the slot receivers the first read on many of the plays.
Your observation about "after the catch running skills" seems like another swipe at our QB. However, that almost is like saying "if we score more points, we might win the game!" DUH.
Football's a team game. Our success to date has as much to do with our offensive line and our skilled wide receivers and running backs as it does with our QB. He would be the first one to tell you that. Having said that , it must be said that our QB is playing at a very high level at the moment, and you comments are unwarranted and unjustified.
I suspect you have other issues...you sound very much like a typical disgruntled parent. If your kid isn't playing enough for you, don't take it out on other players, especially by name in print.
to Rb Pirate for Life wrote on Nov 9, 2008 1:21 PM:i did have a successful year against ramona and valley center, and san marcos, and orange glen last year when i went to the Q. I have to say you are right about one thing. Oceanside is in the valley league, and who can beat them? i don't think poway would have won last year against them. We didn't at the stadium. Oceanside is legit
realsdFootball wrote on Nov 9, 2008 2:34 PM:Oh baby...Oside got warmed up last week vs. VC...Now it will unload its wrath on Ramona and Become the Valley League champs outright. Next stops for Oside...The Q and Home Depot Center!
iheartoside wrote on Nov 9, 2008 5:40 PM:well the comment about wv being in a weaker league is kinda dumb... usa today and nc times both have stated that one of the toughest leagues in the san diego section this year is the valley league.
sure the teams in the valley league (except oside) werent as good in the past but they are coming up.. ramona vc oside and wv have all done very well this year... usual power houses such as carlsbad poway vista lcc... arent doing as good as they usully do but hey every year athletes change and some are fortunate to get talented athletes i mean look at oside... in the past they were always known as the team to beat but now they are the power houses... vc also is another great team and wv ramona are comin up so i believe the valey leauge will grow to become the leauge everyone will want to be in
To realsdFootbal wrote on Nov 9, 2008 7:35 PM:If Oceanside wins their section.Norte Dame (Sherman Oaks) has to lose, and the Pirates have a 90% chance of getting a State Bowl game. The bright light about it is, Norte Dame has to beat LB Poly or the other D-I team to get a State bid. The Pac 5 in LA is brutal. But, if Norte Dame wins their section, they probably will place them in it. It doesnt matter, Oceanside needs to focus on Ramona, and all the other teams in the playoffs first,Helix and Eastlake can sneak up ?
Valley League is weak wrote on Nov 9, 2008 8:15 PM:The only reason teams such as Valley Center, Ramona, and Westview have great records is because they schedule CUPCAKES in their pre-league games.......Division 4 and 5 teams.....
Westview played Granite Hills and Univ. City, both are 1-8.
Valley Center played a horrible San Pasqual team, Mater Dei, and La Jolla.
Ramona played Crawford(cmon) and Horizon(div 5).
Then they get to league and get to face San Marcos, Orange Glen, and Mt. Carmel......that is the only reason they are undefeated or have one loss when they play each other.
Schedule some real teams before league starts.......
Everyone is saying "oh look at the valley league, they are so strong this year"......look at who the teams played.....
Oceanside is legit....the class of San Diego by far.....Ramona, Westview, and Valley Center are OVERRATED. The Valley League is OVERRATED.
RBpirate4Life wrote on Nov 9, 2008 9:14 PM:TO Realsdfootball...how can O'side not get a crack at the state bowl if they win their section...arn't they the #1 in D2 in the state and 3 or 4 overall in the state?? It doesn't make any sense if Oceanside goes undefeated and wins CIF and not get in for the state bowl. Help me here...
north county football parent wrote on Nov 9, 2008 9:41 PM:as a north county football parent, i often read the comments/articles about other teams and all i have to say is wow, there is quite a bit of large ego out there. good grief, could the egos/heads of esco, vc, lcc & oside (sorry pirate for life) fit through a doorway together. wow -- y'all need to learn about humility (parents included.)
to valley league is weak... wrote on Nov 10, 2008 12:25 AM:do u think avo and palomar is better?? hahaha who did those guys play??
No Worries wrote on Nov 10, 2008 1:53 AM:Oceanside will finish the season and playoffs in SD undefeated. As an undefeated defending state champ, I can't see how they would be bypassed for the state championship game.
Oceanside got caught napping in the first half against VC. They will absolutely destroy Ramona. If Westview can get 30, Oside will get 60.
The Valley League is certainly one of the better leagues in the county. That will be proven in the division 2, 3, and 4 playoffs. There are teams at each of those levels from Valley with a solid shot at playing in Qualcomm.
valley league... wrote on Nov 10, 2008 10:45 AM:Worst league ever assembled in the North County. Oceanside is a good team but if the number one contender for the defending state champs is a division 4 valley center team thats extremely overrated, your league ain't much. Westviews average margin of defeat last year in the palomar was about 30 and that league was very average. Oside is good enough to play for a state title again lets just hope they get a shot, because their schedule COULD get them overlooked
Valley League wrote on Nov 10, 2008 12:37 PM:The Avocado and Palomar is not that good, maybe by name and past success. Things are changing. For example, Carlsbad, RB, RBV,SP, Fallbrrok, El Camino,TP, Vista are simply average. LCC is good, and Escondido, not 100% sold on them, yet they are solid. All those teams would get worked by Ramona,VC,WV, and the Pirates. AVo and Palomar are not the same teams of the past, demographics are changing.
To RBpirate4life wrote on Nov 10, 2008 12:42 PM:I am a Pirate. But, those that pick the teams are somewhat bias of LA teams. If Norte Dame who is undefeated wins their section, that means they have to beat LB Poly. That there will elevate the bias nature of them in charge.
To north county football parent wrote on Nov 13, 2008 11:38 AM:Did one or all of these teams beat you or something. You talk about big ego's I think you have some kind of chip on your shoulder. I think that you should grow up and stop attacking children.
How many people know where VC is and how many kids that they have to pull from for a team. They are a school that is only 10 years old and have won 3 CIF titles in 4 years because of hard work.
Or how hard O'side works or any of the other teams..A winning team does not mean that you are a bunch of ego ridden kids. It means that you have a good program that works and players and coaches with talent.
If there is ego in these posts it comes from a few fans not there players. So to those teams that everyone wants to hate on GOODLUCK THIS WEEK!! I want you to know that not everyone is cruel like some of these people. Some of you have beat my team and I have no anger or excuses just we got beat by a team that on that perticular night was better. Enjoy your time on the field and ignore these people.
