ESCONDIDO: 33 citations issued at driver's license checkpoint

By North County Times | Monday, November 10, 2008 9:05 PM PST

ESCONDIDO ---- A total of 33 citations were issued Monday during a driver's license checkpoint in the 3300 block of Bear Valley Parkway, police said.

A little more than 1,300 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, which ran from about 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Lt. James Stuard said.

Of those vehicles, 43 were sent to a second screening area because the drivers could not immediately provide a valid driver's license, Stuard said.

Six drivers had a suspended license, 20 did not have a valid license and six drivers could not provide proof of automobile insurance, Stuard said.

To_respect the law wrote on Nov 11, 2008 6:57 AM:by stating "here in America" i get the picure your refering to illegals once again, well if you were smart enough you would see that on the video all drivers shown were "white". Once again, heres your perfect excuse to bring out your racsist views.

Ray wrote on Nov 11, 2008 8:16 AM:To_respect the law. Maybe in the NCT video, remember the NCT has always had an agenda regarding illegal immigration but from an independent observer taking photos at the scene, I saw different. Most were Hispanics and one even worked for a local construction company and the Illegal alien worker had no license just a Matricula Consular Card. I would like to see what the NCT left on the cutting room floor. These checkpoints work.

To to Respect wrote on Nov 11, 2008 8:19 AM:If the border bootie fits......
I was there. I saw all the Mexican drivers pulling out Mexican ID. Sounds like you are the racist if you can't deal with FACTS! Playing the race card to protect your beloved foreign criminals no longer works! Look around, its a whole new ball game in San Diego County. And don't expect amnesty to save you. You and I both know it will never happen. Viva La Migra!

Illegal illegal illegal wrote on Nov 11, 2008 9:20 AM:If you do not know what 'one' illegal is, you will not know what another illegal is... Illegal is driving without a license, illegal is stealing, illegal is raping, illegal is murder, and the list goes on. But if you or your relatives do not believe in 'illegal', where do you stop? Try stopping your brother, sister, mother, father, son, daughter, or cousin from being illegal and make this nation a better place for all of us.

Slimy Personal Injury Lawyer wrote on Nov 11, 2008 10:11 AM:I'm the guy that you call when you're injured in a car accident. I can't begin to tell you how many people are injured and hurt in our town because of unlicensed and uninsured drivers. So, in my opinion, these checkpoints make our roads safer. But the fact is, these uninsured drivers come from all backgrounds. The fact that many of them are Latino should come as no surprise given that they represent a large portion of our community.

To To_respect the law wrote on Nov 11, 2008 11:14 AM:Let's just say you are right and all of the drivers who had their cars impounded were White.

Go EPD We still need more check points.

It does not matter what color the driver is.

Driver's License, Insurance, and Registration for all!

That is the california law!

MVet wrote on Nov 11, 2008 11:17 AM:There was a very serious accident last week where two people were killed in a head-on crash in Escondido.

It has now been over a week. When may we see the story regarding the circumstances of this accident?

Were the drivers licensed and Insured?
Was alcohol a factor?

Wow wrote on Nov 11, 2008 12:03 PM:WHO is the racist? There is EXACTLY one driver shown!! Yup, he's white but I'll just bet he had no current registration, proof of insurance, or possibly a suspended license. What about the other 32? In an hour and a half 20 "drivers" with NO license? Yeah they were all Americans, right?

GOOD POINT wrote on Nov 11, 2008 12:26 PM:This Check Point only lasted 90 Minutes!

Where is the Outrage!

You mean they can catch 33 Unlicensed and uninsured drivers in only 90 minutes.

What does that say about Public Safety in the city of Escondido ?

Keep it up EPD.

To To respect the law wrote on Nov 11, 2008 2:16 PM:To: To_respect the law

Are you kidding? All of the drivers were white thus everyone is racist.

First of all:

For some reason NCT chose to show only one driver and yes he was white. So. The law is for everyone. You said all of the drivers they showed were white. All "ONE" of them. Now, who is being racist and lying about the facts.

Secondly, I'll place a bet with you that the vast majority of people who didn't have a license where here illegally. You want to take that bet?

Ken wrote on Nov 11, 2008 2:44 PM:Take another look at the video. It looks like the tow-truck driver, that had the white sedan hooked up, almost had his truck run away from him. I bet he was hoping no one noticed!!!

Man Club wrote on Nov 11, 2008 2:57 PM:This thing caused all sorts of traffic. The people w/o licenses or insurance should have to do several days of community service to make up for all the time I wasted sitting in traffic.

I saw that wrote on Nov 11, 2008 3:32 PM:Ken...that was a bit scary, as well. Bottom line, the FACT that 33 law breakers were taken off the roads in 90 minutes, proves the need for such checkpoints. I've been through several and never had to wait, I just got out my license, insurance and registration and was on my way, every time. Way to go, EPD, keep up the good work.

Lots of buttheads are white and black and oriental and other races. The people caught were doing wrong and positively new it, no doubt. Great job done law enforcement! And I agree with others that these buttheads should do a considerable amount of public service labor, and pay a hefty fine, and not get the right to drive again for a long time.

Syl wrote on Nov 11, 2008 7:12 PM:Let's say the Police did this check point for 8 hours.

Do you think they would have impounded over 160 cars?

I think so.

Maybe the city should get into the impound business. I smell revenue!

It is a win - win situation. The city gains revenue and the citizens get safer streets.

The life saved may be your own, your family member or your friends.

Frida wrote on Nov 11, 2008 7:13 PM:Big Brother EPD! Start fighting real crimes and stop making us U.S. citizens be stopped at these checkpoints. Don't waste our funds.

Those violators cited and the cars they drive have an affect throughout the entire region and communities benefit from this proactive approach to removing intoxicated, unlicensed, uninsured, and illegal drivers off our roads.

Also, let's hope that illegal aliens are a part of this process because they fall into any one of the categories listed.

Brad wrote on Nov 12, 2008 5:25 AM:The one problem we have here in America is that we have been allowing illegals to stay and live on our tax dollars. Breaking any other laws is just a natural occurrence after that.

If it's against their rights to ask for ID whenever one is needed, then why do I need a passport to get back into the country of my birth and why can they ask me for it?

Frida needs a clue wrote on Nov 12, 2008 5:53 AM:Our insurance goes up everytime a driver without the proper paperwork is involved in an accident. Who cares what country or state they are from, foriegn drivers licenses do work in this country too. To call a POLICE check point a border check point is giving power to activists who believe that American laws do not aply to and discriminate undocumented imigrants. You must be one of the growing numbers who do not belong on the roads in the first place, in turn making honest people who welcome these check points pay more for insurance.

Bob the Builder wrote on Nov 12, 2008 7:10 AM:Can we get EPD to do one of these in Fallbrook? I'm sure 50% of the vehicles would be impounded.

Re Head-On Crash in Escondido wrote on Nov 12, 2008 10:28 AM:There was a head-on crash in Escondido last week where both drivers were killed.

If the driver(s) was an unlicensed Illegal Alien or was drunk, the citizens of Escondido have a right to know.

As it is, no one is tracking the statistics and I think we as a city have a serious problem.

Questions wrote on Nov 12, 2008 10:38 AM:First, I agree with check points,if a legal american is busted and by the letters they are, than this is not a race issue. I do question all the it's the law comments. Most of seem to have little regard for the law when we drive. Few drivers stop at stop signs preferring to just roll through,(very normal with right turns) Speed laws are almost always ignored, 70mph freeways generally 80-90 mph. I Allways wonder what laws as citizens, have we decided is ok to break all the time we complain about laws being broken by others.
By the way, I am not pro illegal workers.

Patrick in San Juan Capistrano wrote on Nov 12, 2008 11:15 AM:Congratulations on having City leaders, Police/Fire Departments and code enforcement that are behind the will of the people and enforce laws that directly and indirectly impact us all.

Illegal immigration is a fact of life that we need strong leadership locally and nationally to turn the tide.

I am very active with the SJC Americans in San Juan Capistrano and e-mailed the vehicle checkpoint story to my City leaders this morning. I want them to learn from your example

We are slowly addressing the fact that SJC is a 'Sanctuary City'. We just voted our Mayor Joe Soto out of office for one, supporting a social service network to empower Latinos only.

We have formed a Community Safety Committee to provide solutions to overcrowding, vehicular checkpoints, City E-verify implementation, parking restrictions, etc.

Thank you Escondido and our right to defend America's laws and quality of living.

I love all your strong support and participation in this comment section.
Please keep up the great work!

Our local paper - the Capistrano Dispatch is doing a online readers poll asking "What should be the highest priority for the new City Council". Of the three issues stated, dealing with illegal immigration is at 62% - more than twice the amount of the other two issues. See for yourself online on the homepage at the lower left corner. SJC is starting to get it!

Good job wrote on Nov 12, 2008 12:17 PM:Hopefully the "illegals" from other countries will no longer be able to drive to work. Now our own citizens will be able to fill those jobs, if they can get their lazy butts away from surfing or watching Judge Judy. WE are to blame for not working these jobs n the first place regadless of wages or benifits. Anyways, I hope Olga gets these checkpoints out on the weekends/nights and into upper class neighborhoods so that our own citizens remember that they too have to follow the laws.
