Tapping Dads to headline holiday event

TEMECULA ---- The Promenade will kick off the holiday season Friday with the opening of the newly renovated plaza and a performance by the Tapping Dads. Activities begin at 7 p.m.

Fireworks and the arrival of Santa Claus also will be part of the festivities.

The Tapping Dads made it to the top 20 of the popular NBC show, "America's Got Talent." The group was formed by the dads in support of their daughters who danced through the Temecula Dance Company. Also expected to perform are three winners from the Temecula Valley Gospel and Music Festival.

A new feature at the plaza is a trackless train. A "Name The Train" contest is under way. The winner will receive a $100 Promenade gift card.

Corvette group to meet

Attorney to address community group

Cherokee group plans potluck

RIVERSIDE ---- Cherokee Community of Inland Empire will hold a meeting and potluck from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

There will be crafts, historical information, a language lesson, outing information and food.

Cherokee Community of Inland Empire is searching for residents with Cherokee blood who would like to find out about their heritage and skills. The group is overseen by the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma.

Square dance club plans event

TEMECULA ---- The Grape Stompers Square Dance Club will hold its annual Turkey Dance Saturday at the Temecula Community Center.

Chess club gets new home

TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Valley Chess Club will meet from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at a new location.

The club will now meet the first and third Sunday of each month at Starbucks, 40695 Winchester Road, in the Trader Joe's shopping center.

FireSafe Council to meet

MURRIETA ---- How to protect your home against wildfires will be the topic when the Southwest Riverside County FireSafe Council meets at 6 p.m. Monday.

The meeting will feature a review of what homeowners can do to protect their residence, led by George E. Lucia Sr., captain and fire marshal for the Valley Center Fire Protection District and chief of the Palomar Mountain Volunteer Fire Department.

The meeting will be at the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve Visitor Center on Clinton Keith Road, 2 1/2 miles west of Interstate 15.

Sierra Club to meet

TEMECULA ---- The Santa Margarita River will be the focus when the Santa Margarita chapter of the Sierra Club meets at 7 p.m. Monday at the Rancho California Water District headquarters .

The Santa Margarita River, which ties Southern Riverside and Northern San Diego counties, flows through a rugged setting on its way to the ocean. A film about the river's history will be shown and Pam Nelson, from Resource Conservation District, will discuss the threats the river is facing.

Rose society plans holiday meeting

Home tour tickets available

TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Valley Woman's Club will hold its Annual Holiday Home Tour and Gala Nov. 21 to 23.

The Salute to our Warriors Gala will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 21 at Keyways Winery. It will include dinner, entertainment, military color guard, no-host wine bar, live and silent auctions and desserts.

Tickets are $100, which includes a Holiday Home Tour ticket. Proceeds are earmarked for the club's Wounded Veterans Van Project.

The Holiday Home Tour, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 22 and 23, will feature three homes in Temecula's Wine Country that will be professionally decorated for the holidays.

There will also be a variety of vendors, artists and artisans, a food court, coffee and wine bar, and musical entertainment. Tickets are $30 in advance, or $35 at the door.

SUN CITY ---- Hospice of the Valleys will hold its annual "Coping With the Holidays," workshop Friday at Menifee Valley Medical Center.

The workshop will offer support and education about surviving the holidays after suffering the loss of a loved one.

Lung association offers respiratory rally

MURRIETA ----The American Lung Association of California is will hold a Respiratory Rally from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at Rancho Springs Medical Center to help people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease learn how to better control their disease and help slow its progression.

Studies show many adults who are at risk for the disease do not know about COPD, the nation's fourth leading killer. COPD is a term that includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is mostly caused by smoking, but other risk factors include air pollution, second-hand smoke and occupational hazards such as chemicals, dust and fumes.

The conference is for people with COPD and their caregivers. It will feature medical speakers, motivational presenters, educational materials and breakout sessions.

The rally is also designed to encourage social interaction between people who share a common problem.

Boutique, food drive set

TEMECULA ---- The second annual Troops Boutique and Food Drive will be held Friday and Saturday.

The event, sponsored by Inland Valley Church, will benefit families of military personnel serving overseas.

It will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 41399 Avenida Barca.

Organizers also are holding a food drive to replenish the area food banks. Visitors are asked to bring nonperishable food items.

Last year's event raised enough money to send 15 children of deployed service members to Disneyland.

Christmas coming to Menifee

MENIFEE ----A craft fair and entertainment will be part of the inaugural Christmas in Menifee event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Mt. San Jacinto College.

The free event will close with the first tree lighting in the new city. Mayor Wallace Edgerton will light the tree.

The event is sponsored by the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce and Mt. San Jacinto College.

Household waste collection Saturday

TEMECULA ---- Temecula residents can dispose of household waste such as motor oil, batteries and computers and large and bulky items that won't fit in trash bins at a citywide cleanup day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Chaparral High School.

Items such as chemicals, paint, pesticides, empty drums, solvents, gasoline, tires and other hazardous waste will not be accepted. Proof of residency will be required.

'Sew-in' planned at library

MURRIETA ---- Safe Alternatives for Everyone and the city of Murrieta will be sponsor a "sew in" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Murrieta Public Library.

Participants will make quilts to be given to local police departments for distribution to children for comfort when experiencing an emergency.

Quilters are asked to bring their machine. Basic sewing supplies and patterns will be provided.

Veterans' benefits to be discussed

Book launch is Sunday

The event will include tours of the facility with vintage cars to recreate scenes depicted in photographs featured in the books.

Authors Tony Guenther, Marvin Curran, Loretta Barnett and Rebecca Farnbach will be there to sign books and discuss the history of the campus.
