CHARGERS: Multiple mistakes haunt Bolts in loss to Steelers

PITTSBURGH ---- Antonio Gates' mind was racing fast as the Pittsburgh Steelers slowly moved downfield for the game-winning points against a tired and taxed Chargers' defense.

Gates was getting a head start on how the Chargers' offense had failed to take care of business on a cold and snowy Sunday.

"During that last-second drive, I thought about the situations where we made turnovers," said Gates, "and it came back to haunt us."

Oh yes, it did. The Chargers made three costly mistakes and scored just one offensive touchdown to sabotage a fine defensive effort as they suffered an 11-10 loss to the Steelers before 62,051 at Heinz Field.

Pittsburgh's Jeff Reed provided the winning points by kicking a 32-yard field goal with 11 seconds left to drop the Chargers to 4-6, leaving them two full games behind first-place Denver in the AFC West.

The Chargers are 0-13 in regular-season games played in Pittsburgh. And while unlucky No. 13 wasn't easy to accept, it was much easier to explain.

"The turnovers killed us," Gates said.

Quarterback Philip Rivers was intercepted twice and lost a fumble in his own end zone that resulted in a Pittsburgh safety during a frustrating day in which the Chargers' high-powered offense totaled just 213 offensive yards.

Rivers threw a costly interception to Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison with the Chargers leading by five points and positioned at the Pittsburgh 17-yard line late in the first half. So instead of the Chargers taking either an eight- or 12-point lead into halftime, the Steelers took over with 1:23 left in the half and drove downfield for Reed's 21-yard field goal that left them trailing just 7-5 at halftime.

"That was obviously a crucial play in the game," Rivers said.

There were numerous other missed opportunities. Of the Chargers' six first-half possessions, four began at their own 40 yard-line or better, including one possession that began at the Steelers' 49.

All they had to show for the excellent field position was a 3-yard first-quarter scoring run by LaDainian Tomlinson.

"It is becoming too much for us to overcome, obviously," Tomlinson said. "When you lose by one point, that's what you've got to look for ---- blown opportunities. When you play a real good team on the road, you can't do it."

Though the statistics reveal that the Chargers' defense gave up 410 yards, that unit allowed Pittsburgh (7-3) to score just nine offensive points.

Pittsburgh controlled the ball for over 36 1/2 minutes, more than 13 minutes more than the Chargers. And the gassed defense was unable to stop the Steelers from driving 73 yards on 13 plays over 6 1/2 minutes for Reed's winning field goal.

"Unfortunately, we didn't pull it out," said cornerback Quentin Jammer, who missed most of the final drive with leg cramps. "... We held them to nine points and under normal circumstances, that should be a win with the type of offense we have.

"But they have a great defense and they held us to 10 points."

The Chargers' defense set the tone for the gritty performance with a goal-line stand late in the first quarter. Pittsburgh had fourth-and-goal from inside the Chargers' 1, but linebacker Brandon Siler and Jammer stuffed Mewelde Moore for a 1-yard loss.

However, the Steelers didn't come away empty-handed. On third-and-9 from the Chargers 3, Rivers dropped back to throw and Pittsburgh's Harrison exploded past Brandon Manumaleuna for his 12th sack of the season and forced Rivers to fumble.

Offensive tackle Marcus McNeill recovered the ball and was tackled in the end zone for a Steelers' safety.

"I was trying to buy a little time," said Rivers, who matched a season low by passing for 159 yards. "In hindsight, you wish you maybe just would've tried to eat it and get out of there and live for another day and punt us out of there."

Reed kicked three field goals, including one that gave Pittsburgh an 8-7 lead in the third quarter. Nate Kaeding, who missed a 42-yard field-goal attempt in the third quarter, connected on a 22-yard field goal with 6:41 to play to put the Chargers back ahead, but his short kick was a result of a missed red-zone opportunity.

Kaeding's kick ended a 17-play, 78-yard drive in which the Chargers had first-and-goal at the Pittsburgh 6. Tomlinson gained 2 yards on first down and Rivers threw two incompletions.

"We wanted to score a touchdown," Tomlinson said. "Looking at the situation, you figure they haven't scored a touchdown all day and if we score a touchdown, it's going to be pretty hard for them to come back down and score a touchdown.

"Yeah, we knew how important it was. We just couldn't get it done."

Couldn't get it done ---- that's kind of becoming the rally cry for the Chargers' season, one that is quickly running down on a team forecasted to be a Super Bowl contender.

With six games left, the Chargers are two games behind Denver with no margin for error.

"It's going to be a tough road, man," Jammer said. "Very tough. But we'll be up to the challenge."

I take it the Charger's will be drafting for defense next time around? Coaching is suspect in that area as well. Nobody is proven yet there. Not too early to think about a back up for Rivers, either. So far, he hasn't impressed me as being worth the money, however he does have character.

BoltBacker65 wrote on Nov 16, 2008 6:19 PM:Where to begin...hmmm. Well let me put in my Christmas wish list now. I only have two wishes and they’re not asking for much. Dear Santa, wish #1, please fire Norv and bring us a decent head coach who has some back bone and can pick solid coordinators. I know we’ll have to deal with Norv for the rest of the season, but my gosh, this guy truly sucks as a head coach. And wish #2, please put AJ Smith on notice to smarten up or head him out of town.

What the hell kind of outing was that in Pittsburgh? Jeez. Piss away another game with lost opportunities and settling for FGs instead of sealing the deal with a TD...And Norv ..., how do you let Rivers tank the game? Yes, I understand that he really wants to win (and who doesn’t?), but hell, he forces too many plays and ends up killing the drive with a 3 and out or a turn over.

Also, ... Rivers ... single handedly gave the Steelers 8 points via turn overs...2 INTs and a fumble in the end zone that gave up a safety. Noticed also on two occasions (once in the 1st half and once in the 2nd half) on 2nd and 2 the Bolts ran LT and he got stuffed for considerable losses...this happened after effective passes drove the ball down field. I just could not believe that the Chargers would get going and move the ball in a solid and consistent manner only to change up and fold up. Sickening!

Defensively, the Bolts were average and that’s a shame. Poor tackling, again. And what about utilizing the 5 yard rule on pass coverage? How about a solid jolt to the receiver or back at the line of scrimmage or within 5 yards? Damn, their guys got off the line unabated. Heinz Ward was doing this to great effect...I guess the Bolts don’t do that type of game playing anymore...sad.

Yes, Rivera had the boys utilize more blitz packages which worked for a limited time until Big Ben picked it apart. Again, our D was wide open in the short zone. Roethlisberger’s quick releases to backs and receivers coming off tackle were devastatingly effective. Now, why can’t we do that when we have the ball? Maybe ‘cause we’re too predictable?

And what the hell was that crap on the final kick off return? Laterals? The Chargers looked pitiful. If that’s Norv’s idea of trickery, we’re really in deep kimchee. And what about the final play? ... laterals and a fumble that Troy Palomalo picks up and runs in to end zone just to add insult to injury...good thing it didn’t count, eh?

Yeah, we deserved to lose that one. Even Denver did what they had to do but not us. Oh the agony! Wonder if the Colts were watching? If so, we’re going to have our lunch served to us if the Chargers don’t straighten up in a hurry. Luckily, the Steelers couldn't get their act together or else the outcome could've been worse...especially since out D was on the field way to damn long and were tired. Let’s go Bolts and get on track or else it’s on to next season.

James wrote on Nov 16, 2008 8:29 PM:You give up 11 points that's a winning defensive effort. Say what you want about time of possession but missing a field goal, throwing an interception in the red zone and settling for a field goal after starting 1st and goal from the five is ridiculous...Offense, scores touchdowns, Rivers manages the game...this game is not even close 21 or 24 to 8 at best....

Kaeding and Rivers are responsible...that's it.

Gotta keep the faith...Sam's right, only really one game down since the Bolts have Denver at home...stay within a game and there's still a shot...

Giants went 10-6 last year...just get to the playoffs...

2-7 For the Raiders...so that's always nice...Go Raiders beat the Broncos (do something good for once)

This season is full of unrealized potential, and now Imdy roles into town. Even if we win, what's to come the next game? This team needs to quit looking at statistics (Denver's record) and look at themselves

As far as the untenable Nurf Turner, when does managment give up on him? AJ can't be allowed hire a puppet. A real head coach has to be allowed the autonomy to run the team and kick some arse. Anyway, if AJ can swallow humble pie, and lure away who should be our real head coach (from the CBS football pregame show), then we might be in business. Until then........

Finally, I remember last year, when Nurf was hired. Folks exclaimed that if he couldn't take "this team" to the big show, his career was over. Year two, and it appears to be just about that.

Too bad Charger fans...we've waited 14 years for something special, and it looks to be another year before we can hope for it again. I'd have expected this if we had Dan Henning and Babe Lauflemburg, but we don't and the result appears to be about the same as it was then.

SDBroncoFan wrote on Nov 17, 2008 8:41 AM:What an officiating nightmare 1 penalty for the bolts to 13 for the Steelers? That's just ridiculous. Sorry fellow San Diegans but Rivers is not the QB of the future. He has how many years now in the league and still can't look off the coverage. Instead of calling for the head of Norv, you should be calling for the head of AJ. He hired him, he let go of Neal and Edwards Fired marty, oh and signed that arrogant hillbilly Rivers. I bet the D misses Edwards, LT definitely misses Lo, and the offense is offensive under Rivers. I know the whole team misses Marty. Martyball looks pretty good now doesn't it?

BoltDan wrote on Nov 17, 2008 9:27 AM:Yes the D played better (3 field goals) but two LB's in the middle still haunt us. Wilhelm and Cooper. They could not stay up with anybody coming out in the back field. AJ is the fault for that. Hiring Norv (AJ), Hiring Cotrell (AJ), the list goes on and on. AJ and his ego (my rant last year and was told to shut it because the team Marty built went to the Championship game) have killed this team. Yes he brought Merrieman, Rivers, and a few other players to the team. But what about his failures. I guess we Chargers fans have to wait another year. It would be nice to beat the Ponies (broncos) out of the play-offs though. C'mon Bolts...

And to all the haters living IN SAN DIEGO, do us all a favor and get out of San Diego please. If you hate SD so much why live here? Do us all a favor, move, and quit driving our housing prices up!

Andy wrote on Nov 17, 2008 2:50 PM:The chargers lack the mental toughness to be a championship team, they got all kinds of talent though. This is why they couldn't get past the patriots in the playoffs, and the pats coach knew it. That all falls on the coaching, and leadership.

Andy wrote on Nov 17, 2008 5:56 PM:Sam are you upset the colts won the superbowl, the year the chargers were supposed to win it? Got to get past the patriots to be a champion.

KDOG wrote on Nov 17, 2008 6:29 PM:Let me see here...

Carolina (8-2) L 26-24 (bad ref call that got Caro a TD on a phantom fumble)

Denver (6-4) L 39-38 (Big arm ref theft)

New Orleans (5-5) L 37-32 (robbed by refs again - excessive penalties, one taking away a TD on a phantom hold)

Pittsburgh (7-3) L 11-10 (Rivers choke & Polomalu INT that was not an INT)

We should have won all 4 of these games if it wasn't for the refs going out of their way to make mistakes. Our record would be 8-2 so to say the Chargers suck shows how stupid the Charger-haters are. If we were blown out on all of our losses you'd have a point.

Sure, we still lost the games but it's not due to a lack of talent, anyone who knows football knows it's because of the head coach. The players need to know there's a HC who will chew them out if they keep screwing up, this isn't going to happen with Norv. He's never learned that you can't have a OC personality as the HC. Rivers would not be smiling with Marty as the HC when he throws another horrible INT in the red zone.

Enjoy it Bronco fans because your days are numbered once AJ or Spanos wakes up and gets rid of Norv and/or AJ. Remember you still have a crappy defense & no running game so that equals no Super Bowl.

Kentera wrote on Nov 17, 2008 8:15 PM:Hey KDOG,
The circus left town last week, why is there still a clown around? We will put the Chargers in the could of, should of, would of Super Bowl. Face reality. If you saw that game yesterday, you know the refs were giving the call against the Steelers. They had 13 penalties for over 100 yards.

Testament68 wrote on Nov 17, 2008 10:31 PM:KDOG, that WAS and interception and if it wasnt for 100+ yards in penalties the game wouldn't have been close. SD did play arguably their best game defensively of the season. Their offense was limited because they were facing the #1 defense in the league.

To KDOG wrote on Nov 18, 2008 10:39 AM:How funny, how you are crying a river to all of us. Face it, Chargers had several chances to stop the offense but we all defense steps up and wins games. The defense in all three games that you mentioned fell asleep. We enjoy making fun of Charger fans because you are all jokes. When your team wins a few games in the opening season, you guys/gals are shouting on TV "Super Bowl Bound" and then when you guys/gals start to see the Chargers loose, you put your little flags, stickers, and jerseys away in the closet. It's funny, how I don't see anymore people sporting Chargers gear.

To KDOG wrote on Nov 18, 2008 8:01 PM:If it makes you feel better blaming the loss on the refs, go ahead. Maybe if the Chargers and everyone else didn't start the season saying they're Super Bowl bound and concentrate on one game at a time, then they'd actually win a few.
To-To allSteeler fans-The Chargers haven't won a single SB game, and the Steelers have won 5! So who's the team that sucks? It's not rocket science to figure that one out. Oh-and you wouldn't be hearing Steeler fans jumping off the band wagon or blaming the refs for a loss either. Hopefully the Chargers can shed the "chokers" label some day.
