Left wants to silence the opposition
For the last eight years, our current president has been vilified on these pages and, as vicious as it was, it was freedom of speech.
Now that we have a president-elect of her choosing, Susan Zesky wants the North County Times to take the high road and only run columns on the Opinion page that inspire, motivate and stop the conservative versus liberal bashing (Letters, Nov. 12). In other words, "Now that my guy will be in power, it is time to silence the opposition."
I do not remember her or any liberal calling for a stop to (what is in my opinion) the vile rhetoric of Maureen Dowd. Why single out Dick Morris, who is mild in comparison? My point is this: As long as we have a First Amendment right, we need an Opinion page, regardless of the opinion. If you want propaganda, turn on the evening news.

Our future survival
Our little planet and our country are both in serious trouble. We have all heard of the very real threat of global warming and its catastrophic consequences (although some of us are still in denial about it).
What most of us don't seem to appreciate is how imminent it probably is. And now we are faced with an economic crisis that may rival the Great Depression. God help us!
What can we do? We can address both problems as one. There is an organization, Repowering America, that has developed a plan that will wean us from dependence on fossil fuels within 10 years. If we take the initiative, we can get both our economy and our environment back on track quickly. If we take the initiative, we can have new industries with high-paying jobs, lower energy costs and clean, domestically generated energy that is virtually limitless. See the plan at repoweramerica.org, and get involved!

Clean energy can help repower America
Right now, there are millions of people ready to work and countless jobs to be done that will strengthen our economy at home. There are thousands of buildings that need to be weatherized, solar panels to be installed and wind turbines to be erected. There are communities that need local and sustainable food and people ready to farm the crops. There are public transit systems and smart electricity grids in need of engineers and electricians.
Americans are ready to build the new economy. It's time to invest in saving the planet and the people. America faces unprecedented economic, environmental and national security challenges. We urgently need new jobs, stable energy prices and freedom from dirty fossil fuels and global warming pollution. These challenges call for a big solution.
I want our leaders to know we support the goal of Repowering America with 100 percent clean electricity within 10 years, to get our country and our environment back on track quickly. We can do this through energy efficiency, renewable generation and a national, unified smart grid. Repowering America means new industries with high-paying green jobs. ...

Gestures touched their hearts
My father, a retired veteran, is in the VA hospital. He had the pleasure of being there on this Veterans Day. Two wonderful things happened to him, and they involved young patriots.ˇ...
The first was three little girls with two young ladies who came to visit the veterans in the hospital. The three little girls came in his room, which is shared by three other veterans. They went up to each man, gave them flags and personally thanked them for their service to our country and giving them freedoms we all share. The second occurrence came at dinner time. On each of their dinner trays were letters with pictures of a patriotic theme, from the fourth-grade class from Chaparral School in Poway. I can tell you it brought tears to their eyes, and I am sure it touched their hearts. They immediately wanted to put them on their walls to share with everyone.
What a fantastic thing for these children to do. And, of course, I am not forgetting the wonderful adults who guided these children. We have so many negative things in the news media for so long, it is my hope is this letter is uplifting to all. Our future is in our young. Let us lead them to good.

Happy days are coming
Congratulations to Mr. Barack Obama and Mr. Joe Biden on their great victory. Our Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, civil rights, women's rights, food stamps program, etc., have been saved, and happy days will be here again beginning Jan. 20, 2009. The sense of compassion and concern for ordinary people is back. The party of the people has spoken.
Mr. John McCain and Mrs. Sarah Palin were very condescending at what a community organizer is. I hope they know by now. Maybe not. Too many poor people involved, and they don't want to know any poor people. The Republican Party has plenty of money but no heart.
America finally woke up from fear and trembling after eight years and made itself and most of the world proud of it again. Hooray.

Marriage makes next generation possible
We should thank those in ancient Biblical days who defended traditional marriage and believed in the Bible, otherwise none of us would be here today. Without traditional marriage, there would be no next generation, no procreation.
Unfortunately, there is deviant sexual behavior in the world (incest, pedophilia, bestiality, pornography and prostitution). The majority of mankind must pass laws to ban this immorality, and immorality is a religious issue. This is why churches have had to take a stand on Proposition 8. There are laws against the minorities who want to practice deviant sex. The minorities do not rule, thankfully, because there are also minorities who want to exceed the speed limit, drive while drunk, steal and commit murder. It rankles the minorities, but the majority rules to ensure traditional values and the safety and well-being of all the people.
This nation is "of the people, by the people and for the people." The majority of the people in the state of California believe in the Bible and in traditional marriage. They voted yes on Prop. 8. Amen.

Prop. 8 'rights' defined
I have the "right" to do anything I want to do, if when and where what I do does not require anything in thought or deed from others. Frankly, I couldn't care less how others conduct their life ““ in private. I don't give a whit who or what people have sex with, or how perverse it may or may not be. Just don't try and require others to sanction and validate it.
If we desire to be part of the greater society as a whole, we must go pretty much along with the accepted mores of the society in general. If we don't choose to fit in, we might be wise to find others of a like mind and arrange to gather separately to practice whatever it is that sets us apart. A nudist, for example, cannot expect to walk around naked in a public place and expect everyone to let him alone and just "get over it"! Said nudist is free (has the right) to walk around naked in his home or in a nudist colony, but should not expect even one non-nudist to enjoy, ignore or condone his actions. Or insist that others call it anything other than being "naked." That is simply imposing on my right to think and evaluate as I wish.

Put away childish behavior
It is very important to have a good attitude toward the things we face in our lives. We all win some and lose some, but acceptance and a good attitude help us keep going. What people manifested with their vote is not going to change, no matter the protests and temper tantrums.
Grow up; do what you preach. Do not waste your time and the time of others. If you want to marry someone from your sex, and the passing of Prop. 8 is not allowing you to, feel free to go to Massachusetts or Connecticut; they are ready to marry you there. Put away this childish behavior and let us live.

Whether you like it or not
Didn't we all hear Mayor Gavin Newsom say that unforgettable statement when four judges approved same-sex marriages? Now Californians voted and Proposition 8 passed; we did not take away any rights, we just restored the definition of marriage. And gay activists should realize this. Attacking churches will not fix the situation and change the constitution again. The votes have been cast, and marriage has been restored. Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid in California. Whether you like it or not.

Trustee will work for students
To the voters of Oceanside: Thank you for re-electing me to the Oceanside school board. It has been my honor and privilege to serve on the school board for the past eight years, during which time the district has made great strides in remodeling many of our schools and improving the academic achievement of our students.
I am very concerned about how the financial situation in the state and the nation will impact our schools in the next few years. I anticipate that we will be facing some tough challenges ahead. Rest assured that I will work very hard to make the best decisions possible for our students.
Please feel free to contact me at ahakes@yahoo.com or call the school district at (760) 966-4020 to give me input with any concerns and/or priorities. Thank you to all my supporters, especially parents, district staff, friends and family who donated to my campaign and/or displayed signs in their yards.
Finally, a very big special thank you to my campaign committee: Lori, Art, Rita, Charlene, Bob, Elaine, Karen, Bill, Charlene, John, Carolyn, Arlene, Marie, Beth and Carolyn for all their hard work.

Come up with your own definition
I voted yes on Proposition 8. I did not vote yes on this to strip gay and lesbian couples from uniting or to take away their rights or privileges. I looked up the definition of "marriage" in my New Webster's Dictionary, copyrighted 2004. It did not have marriage listed specifically, but listed marry. Marry is defined as: join of husband and wife; take as husband or wife; take a husband or wife. In a gay marriage, who is the husband in the marriage of two wives? Or who is the husband in the union of two men?
I believe that the real issue here is not rights and discrimination of the gay couple, I believe that they just want to call their union "marriage." Why can't they call it something else? Save marriage as defined in the dictionary and call your union something else. ...
It doesn't matter if they receive the same rights under the law. They just want it to be called marriage. That is the real issue. Don't blame the church and Christians on the passage of this amendment. Come up with your own definition of what you are and fight for the rights that you do not have. I am sure that you can achieve the equality you say you want because the system does work.

Now is the time for clean-energy leadership
The United States of America faces unprecedented economic, environmental and national security challenges that can no longer be ignored. We are in dire need of an entirely different focus, which would include new jobs that are directed to the future, not the past, and that revolve around clean-energy production.
This new job sector could help us create stable energy prices and give us freedom from foreign fuels and global warming pollution. These challenges call for a big solution, and I want our leaders to know, here in San Diego, we support Repowering America with 100 percent clean electricity within 10 years. ... With proper leadership, we can do this through energy efficiency, renewable generation and a national unified smart grid.
Repowering America means new industries with high-paying green jobs, lower energy costs and replacing dirty coal and foreign oil with clean, domestic energy that is free and limitless. Now is the time for all sectors of our society to come together and make this happen. See the plan at repoweramerica.org., and then take action.

Don't replace or sell hospital
My congratulations to the Tri-City Hospital Board of Directors-elect: Rosemarie Reno, Kathleen Sterling and Charlene Anderson. Only sorry Dr. George Coulter did not make it!
This picture of our hospital (Oct. 30) is just beautiful. I cannot imagine it being replaced or sold, as it belongs to the people. Los Angeles General Hospital is the same; no change when I lived there 55 years ago.

Let legislators pay for the state's deficit
How are we Californians going to cope with this deficit? The state of California is in fact a huge business, and this huge business is in serious financial trouble. How are we the people going to get out of this mess? Write a check? My wife may not be able to cover it; I know I can't. ...
I have a solution to propose to the state legislators: You people got us into this situation by your lack of due diligence in the performance of your job as senators and members of the assembly. You write the $11 billion check. ... In business, poor money managers get fired for poor performance and the CEO is removed by the board of directors and sent packing. Maybe if we send them all a 90-day notice of recall, that might get their attention, but I doubt it.
The only solution is for every California citizen ““ voter, business owner, property owner ““ to band together and file a class-action lawsuit against the state legislators as individuals for failure to pass a true and honest budget in California for 2009. It's about time for these people to start doing the job they asked for and were elected to do. Californians expect nothing less.

What have we done?
These are not my words about Barack Obama: Creepy, elusive, watches us watching him on stage, knows the creature he designed isn't a real person, has a thin resume, nobody knows who he is, said they have never seen an acceptance speech with no one but Obama on stage. Whose words? Two Newsweek reporters on the Charlie Rose program ““ after the election. They, and other deceitful media, acclaimed Obama.
Watch out for your 401(k)s. And how about this? Obama campaign workers angry over unpaid wages. Millions and millions of dollars, and he can't pay his workers? This tells me something about handling finances. What hypocrisy ““ worrying about the poor. What he spent on the election would have helped them for years. The amount spent is obscene.
There's a needed change. Change? So far, and it's only a couple of days, the stock market has plunged, congratulations from Chavez, Castro and Ahmadinejad. Just what his liberal supporters wanted. Russia threatening us and the Pentagon worried about a transition attack. If you think I'm a staunch Republican, I'm not. The Republican Party has let us down ““ no leadership.

Remorse for 'Yes on Prop 8' vote
To the opponents of Proposition 8, i.e., to the proponents of civil liberties without regard to race, color, creed, gender, age, country of national origin, mental or physical handicap and sexual orientation: I apologize for voting in favor. It was perhaps that I was taken in by all the media blitz, and also a hardening of the heart. I too am a member of a minority class, and I should have empathized.
Now I feel I have committed an unconscionable act of measurable proportions. I will now write to those in Congress who represent me, as well as to the Supreme Court judges and ACLU staff poised to reinstate this (I now believe) inviolable right, and let them know there's at least one more supporter of tolerance and compassion. Again, I'm sorry.

Many deny Gore's truth
Douglas Dunn (Letters, Sept. 1) spent 52 words in ad hominem attacks on Darrell Beck and Frank Thurlow; hardly significant dialogue. Please note that the subject is now "climate change" and not "global warming" (it's always changing), so nobody argues that.
If Douglas' La Nina represents a one-time cooling, why does an El Nino in 1998 also not mean "a one-time" warming, instead of Al Gore's "hottest year on record" (which was really in 1933)? Why have global temperatures steadily decreased since 2000, not increased; "An Inconvenient Truth"? Why do Drs. Roy Spencer (co-developer of satellite measuring of global temperatures), Fred Singer (climatology professor at George Mason University), or Richard Lindzen (climatologist at MIT) all say that there is insignificant evidence of man-made causes? Are they amateurs? Why are polar bear populations up to 25,000 at present from only 5,000 in 1950 and growing? Why is ice thickening in the Antarctic, not thinning? Why does the hurricane expert William Gray say hurricanes are not increasing? All still "amateurs"?
There are many more prominent men who deny Gore's "inconvenient truth." At its worst, it's a scam!

The published letter from Irvin Forbing repeats the same tired refrain he has been singing for years in his campaign to stand athwart the progress of SCIENCE and yell "STOP!"
He continues to want us to believe that climate scientists working in research labs or universities are somehow getting rich, though he can't point his finger to any of the scientists who have gotten rich off their PEER-REVIEWED consensus on the subject. In contrast, we can easily point to the CEO's and stockholders of energy companies who have indeed made off like bandits. Literally.
Sorry, Forbing, but science moves forward. You have tried to obstruct progress in biochemistry (evolution), climate science and stem cell research. The American people are fed up with your war against science and you have been defeated. Go on, yell and scream as much as you want.
Starting January 20, the war against science (climate science, evolution and stem-cell research) is over. We will have a new President and new Congress, including many moderate Republicans, who will have a powerful supermajority when it comes to issues of reason and science.
The Dark Ages are over.

It is a total lie, as told by the left, that they are the tolerant one's, they are the only side who has used their power to shut down opposition political speech.
From this American's perspective, that places them directly into the camp's of Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, and other authoritarianism governments. Which many today think would be just fine, because they defend these regimes all the time.

But, Al Arnold claims: "Our little planet and our country are both in serious trouble. We have all heard of the very real threat of global warming and its catastrophic consequences (although some of us are still in denial about it)."
Yes, that last part is about us, the deniers, the "bitter clingers" who have been equated with holocaust deniers. Yes, that's just another way the left shows us it's love & tolerance, by calling you a holocaust denier.
World global temperatures have dropped for almost the last two years, but that does not stop those who believe that CO2 drives global temperatures.
And it is because, facts don't matter.
And global warming has become the Left's new religion.
Now, as to these "high paying green jobs", Many, in fact, most of them simply will not materialize. The fact is the Left does not like "industry."
Ideologues within the Leftist community would love to see all of these jobs go away.
All one needs to do is listen to what NObama said about the coal industry: "So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted."
So, be on notice...
If the Left targets your job for elimination, they will say it is for the greater good, and part of your sacrifice.

1) She tries to compare sex between 2 consenting homosexual adults to "incest, pedophilia, bestiality, pornography and prostitution". Perversion is making the comparison.
2) She declares "Without traditional marriage, there would be no next generation, no procreation."
I guess that she has not heard of anyone EVER having a baby out of wedlock or single-parenthood.
3) She states "The majority of the people in the state of California believe in the Bible and in traditional marriage."
That may or may not be true, I shan't argue that point.
HOWEVER, the majority can vote to approve anything or ban anything and if they voted and approved something that violates either the California Constitution or the United States Constitution, it WILL be rightfully struck down when challenged in court.
Judi Cunningham is free to have and practice her religious beliefs, if she and others vote to take away the right of equal protection under the law OR ANY RIGHT from any group or minority, their attempt will be stopped.

It seems that the Russian temperature reports from September had been completely duplicated over to the Russian October dates. (Aren’t you glad that NASA is careful?)
What brought this to Watts’ attention was that the United States October results were the 70th warmest over the past 124 years making the US a pretty cold October. A homosexual might get up in the morning, go to work, and return to the partner and kids like any straight person. Same lifestyle, different sexual orientation. Using the word "lifestyle" is dishonest, because it promotes the ideas that (1) homosexuality is a choice, since people choose their lifestyles; and (2) homosexuals' lives are mostly quite similar to one anothers. Both of these are false. They share a lifestyle as much as lefthanded people do.

Even our national elections are by state. The take all winners, in general, take a delegation to the Electoral College. The Constitution is meant to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority. All those previsions mentioned and attributed to homosexuals can also be attributed to heterosexuals. In fact, there are more heterosexuals practicing them simply based upon the mathematical of numbers and the law of probability. Christians had to put their foot down? Eventually, DOMA and Prop 8 will be shown to be unconstitutional per Equal Protection for all citizens. Lastly, it is incorrect that all the voters for Prop 8 are Christians voting the morality of their religion as the law of the land. I voted against Prop 8 predicated upon a human rights issue and the equal protection clause. Voting upon issues based upon religion is dangerous. Judaism, for example, has virtually no interest in "converting" people to their faith, and they make it hard to do so. Even more of an example is Buddhism, where people of any other religions are also welcome and no effort is made to rule society. Christianity, in most of its forms, is one of those that actively and fervently believe in converting people. This, not the faith itself, is the problem IMHO. Physical attacks, vandalism, anarchy, attacks on police, attacks on churches, attacking neighbors, no respect for the law or free speech or differing opinions. Went with my gut instinct and it was right.

I assume that you considered voting No on 8 based on the idea that it was a matter of equality under the law. But regardless, you are taking the actions of a miniscule minority to justify your opinion of a very important legal and ethical principle. You are willing to take those actions and say that these are the "true colors of the gay rights crowd". Methinks these criminals who were violent and should be arrested served as a perfect excuse for what is really your plain, old-fashioned homophobia. How else to explain your willingness to abandon a principle based on the behavior of a few hoodlums?

Because a rabid anti-abortionist bombed a clinic, I will have to be pro-choice. Because a pro football player beat up his wife, I will no longer attend any football games. You sit there with your rights and you deny them to others only because they are homosexual and you don't approve of homosexuality. Don't lie about it, you will use any excuse you can and my actions or the actions of others are only your newest excuse to do exactly what you would do anyway.

You berate Forbing with no logical input. You don’t tell that embryonic stem cells have produced inadequate results, while adult ones have; you cannot give any successful testing of evolution (required in science); you apparently do not know that Al Gore is not a scientist and has made a bundle off carbon credits (which will have no effect on CO2 reduction, according to those giving input to the IPCC); and you are not aware of the socialism that is rapidly approaching by the repeated denigrations of our Republic (which you may not understand), and we are indeed coming into a social “dark ages”, which I hope you enjoy.

The posts from "Oooops -- Again" (9:03am) and "Sonny" (12:49pm) sadly show the need to pity the poor gullible victims of the war on science by propagandist supported by those who profit in the BILLIONS from sales of the non-renewable FINITE FILTHY FOSSIL FUELS that put green in their pockets, but not in the environment over which we maintain stewardship.
Between the two, at least "Oooops" tries to show some scientific basis, but as we have seen so many times in this forum, simply dismisses serious scientist such as Goddard at NASA, and confirms lack of even basic scientific knowledge. He demonstrates perfect examples of a non-sequitur -- giving a premise, then deriving a conclusion that does not logically follow from that premise. In this case, points that have made repeatedly in this forum, are that usual Arctic temperatures are BELOW what is optimal for snow formation, so increased snowfall and ice thickness in that part of the world reflects warming temperatures. Again, the data about polar bears cites world census figures rather than specific at-risk Arctic areas. Arguing with those who start with pre-determined conclusions against scientific consensus is as futile as arguing against religion-based creationists or little children who always have a way of explain how a literal Santa Claus comes down every chimney in the world in one 24-hour day.
Sadly, "Sonny" is much worse. He is so incapable of addressing substance that he has to entirely fabricate out of whole cloth statements he attributes to me but which are not even in my post (5:29am -- check it out for yourselves), including "ad hominem attacks", “it's fact”, "all scientists agree," and "no reputable scientist." The FACT is that not one of these words or phrases occurs in my post. "Sonny" simply LIED. "Sonny" simply made that up, as he does all his science. The only one he got right is that I mentioned "CONSENSUS," and I have verified this many times in this forum in referring to the universal scientific agreement when it comes to objective, peer-reviewed scientific and academic journals, as distinguished from those bought and paid for by petrodollars.
As for testing of evolution, there is much objective, replicable derivation from direct observation of evidence and, in any case, "Sonny" (or Forbing he defends) cannot apply their same standard to their alternative explanation, Genesis.
He also misrepresents the status of embryonic stem cell research.
More fabrications from "Sonny": He says that I "do not know that Al Gore is not a scientist." Obviously not a regular reader of the letters page or this forum, he simply jumps to conclusions and, again, GETS IT WRONG. If he had actually read the letters or this forum he would know I have never cited Gore as a scientist (but have cited legitimate credentialed experts from peer-reviewed sources), and have specifically noted that Gore is a public policy administrator and NOT A SCIENTIST.
The level of complete dishonesty and outright fabrication in this post confirms the pathetic level of desperation by those trying to debunk real science in the name of their petty superstitions and/or oil-funded special interests.

Look at Genesis in the first chapter and compare it with the second chapter and then tell me, which was the sequence of creation? For example, if the Institute for Creation Research sought relevant information from Genesis, would they determine that plants were created, then animals, then humans (Genesis 1), or humans, then plants then animals (Genesis 2)? Note that in both passages, time indicators are clearly established.
Or, if you are trying to establish the lineage of Jesus as coming from the House of David, would you look at the genealogy offered in Matthew chapter 1 or Luke chapter 3? Both claim to be the lineage of Jesus through Joseph, yet between Joseph on one end and Solomon the son of David on the other, there is not one name that is the same; not even the same number of generations.

Still obsessing about Joe the Plumber, are we?
Clearly there is not going to be reproduction if the entire species were to give up cross-sexual mating.
But if only a small percentage of the species does so, as occurs throughout the history of our species and most (possibly) other species that reproduce sexually, same-sex coupling does not seem to be a threat to reproduction or evolution.
But what leaves me confused is that Ron continues to avoid the question repeatedly posed as to this point: if marriage is ONLY about reproduction, what about post-menopausal women, anyone who has been sterilized or found to be infertile? Do you or do you not support a ban on fertility-challenged marriage? And what level of certification do you propose to ensure that only the fertile are allowed to wed?
And, even if it is a choice (contrary to massive volumes of evidence), elsewhere you constantly talk about "freedom" - so isn't it hypocrisy if you choose to restrict "freedom" to those who use their "freedom" to make choices different than yours.
Get a dictionary, Ronnie Boy.
