CHARGERS: L.T. knows that time is running out

Chargers star bemoans missed chances that put playoff hopes in peril

SAN DIEGO ---- The radio talk shows are alive with chatter about the Chargers' expiring playoff hopes. The letters to the sports section and yapping in chat rooms echo that theme.

It's the expected reaction to the Chargers' third loss in four games, which came Sunday in Pittsburgh. But when future Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson bellows the same bark, people pay attention.

On Monday, Tomlinson wasn't zigging, zagging or wiggling like he does when carrying the football. Instead, his assessment was straight when asked if the fading Chargers' postseason hopes are nearly kaput.

"I think so, I really do,'' Tomlinson said. "We are two games back. We are not out of it, but it's like blown opportunities we keep on talking about when we could have easily been tied with Denver right now.''

Instead, the two-time defending AFC West champion Chargers are 4-6, staring up at the Broncos at 6-4. With a six pack of games remaining, the sobering fact is that the Chargers might not toast their fourth playoff trip in five years.

"Whenever you keep blowing opportunities, then at some point as they say, opportunities don't come about anymore,'' said Tomlinson, who's mired in the worst season of his eight-year career. "It's like when the opportunity comes, you open the door and take it, and if you don't, it passes you by and goes to someone else.''

The Chargers are hoping a three-game homestand will get them cooking. But with those opponents being the Colts on Sunday night, followed by the Falcons and Raiders, sweeping the trio is hardly a given.

However, that's the corner the Chargers find themselves in after the latest defeat, an 11-10 heartbreaker at Heinz Field.

Are the stumbling Chargers too far behind to catch up?

"I wouldn't go that far to say we are done because anything can happen with six games,'' Tomlinson said. "It does look slim, but we're not done yet.''

Sadly, Tomlinson's career also has more yesterdays than tomorrows. With each passing year, his chances of reaching a Super Bowl diminish. Tomlinson once told the story of Chargers general manager A.J. Smith assuring Tomlinson that his spectacular career wouldn't be in vain.

Smith declined to return a call to verify the tale.

But Tomlinson knows the sand in his NFL hourglass is dissipating fast. That makes this dreary season, which held so much promise, so difficult to comprehend.

"Each year is another season gone, and I'll be the first to tell you that I am running out of time ---- I don't know how many more years I'm going to play,'' said Tomlinson, who is on pace to barely crack 1,000 rushing yards. "But at this point, you just hope for the best, and that is all I can really say about it.

"You just hope that things, if they don't turn out the way they should this year or we don't make it into the playoffs, you question what's next and that's just where I am right now.''

After the Chargers lost their fourth of five road games, Tomlinson said, the flight home was eerily silent.

"It was very long and very quiet,'' said Tomlinson, who averaged only 3.2 rushing yards on 18 carries. "Nobody said much; I don't even know how to take that.

"I know, for me, (there was) just a whole lot of thought of these past 10 games and where do we go from here and our chances. All of (those) things run through my mind, and that was probably what was running though everyone else's mind, which is probably why we were so quiet on that flight.''

Chargers notes

DEs Luis Castillo (groin) and Jacques Cesaire (knee) each had an MRI exam and will be evaluated later in the week. Cesaire said he'll play Sunday against Indianapolis. ILB Stephen Cooper (elbow) also is expected to play. ... S Steve Gregory (neck) will return this week after missing a game; CB Cletis Gordon (knee) is out for one more week. ... The Chargers re-signed OT Corey Clark to the practice squad. Clark was waived from the active roster on Saturday.

Ric in Delaware wrote on Nov 18, 2008 7:51 AM:There are so many ways to go look at this season ,so many obvious mistakes,so much that can, and has, and will be said about a season that had such high expectations, but has turned into the season from hell. After 44 years as a Charger fan I thought I had seen it all, guess not. I will not go into a long diatribe, just make 2 observations, and then call it a day. 1. 2006 14-2, 2007 11-5, 2008 4-6 and already gauranteed a worse record than last year. As Bill Parcells said you are what your record says you are. This to me is a team in decline not a team that should be peaking for a 4 or 5 year period . It is not for lack of talent that they are in decline, is it just coincedence that they have been in decline since Norv Turner took over?So much more to be said but you can draw your own opinion from THE FACTS,NOT OPINION, JUST THE PLAIN AS THE NOSE ON YOUR FACE FACTS. 2. I have recently begun to have the same feeling I had when the reality that Ryan Leaf was nothing but the biggest bust in NFL history, and how drafting him had set the Chargers back a mininmum of 2 to three years. Why do I bring up that tortured part of Charger history? Because AJ Smith let his egotistical attitude make decisions that were to the detriment of the Chargers, not to ther benefit. This is not doing the job you are hired to do when you put your ego before your job. He has hired a coach who is not a leader of men, cannot inspire, and does not have a team prepared to play on Sunday. That, coupled with Dean Spanos going along with whatever AJ wants has now led us down the road from ELITE,TO GOOD, TO LOSER.Handing this Super Bowl caliber team to Norv Turner on a silver platter, and watching him turn chicken salad into chicken s__t,with the complicity of Smith And Spanos will have long and far reaching effects. Players coming up for contracts will seek the big money and a team with which they have a chance for a ring . Some players in the next couple of years will be in physical decline. And if you listen to some of the interviewd players I detect a note of frustration and lack of confidence in leadersip. All this put together is leading the Chargers back into the abyss. Thanks ,AJ,DEAN, NORV, It took 3 of you but you are getting the job done just as good Ryan Leaf did. MOVE OUT OF THE WAY RAIDER NATION THAT OBJECT SPIRAILING OUT OF CONTROL DOWN THE BLACK HOLE IS THE SAN DIEGO CHARGERS.

Bolt-O-Matic wrote on Nov 18, 2008 9:42 AM:Woe is Norville.
He's like the kid who grew up down the street from you...nice enough kid, but every time, without fail, that you let him touch one of your toys, he breaks it. Then you'd hear that muffled loser-horn sound go "Wa-Waa-Waaaaaa..."
Wow, and LT. I thought his skills were waning ON the field only. I've never heard 'quitter' in his voice before. Good thing Michael Turner and his comparativly fresh-legs are scampering around down there in the Ol' South. Not that he'd do much better than LT here with the Imposters on the O-line. It's as if 'Bodysnatchers' came down from outer-space and stole our real O-line, and replaced them with heartless zombies, wrapping them up in fat, long-term contracts. Wait..that did happen...

Dianne wrote on Nov 18, 2008 10:46 AM:The day A.J. fired Marty, The Chargers
future crashed!!! From 1st place, soon they'll be in last! Too bad,we've been a long time season ticket holder, it so frustrating.

yeah right wrote on Nov 18, 2008 12:11 PM:bolts shoulda kept Turner and traded LT

DJ wrote on Nov 18, 2008 12:16 PM:Ric, I couldn't agree with you more. Marty was brought in to save the team and he did just that. In his 1st year he took them from 5-11 to 8-8. In his 3rd year he gives them the best record they've seen in 25 years. In his 5th and final year he gives them a 14-2 record, the best in franchise history. You can also say he was responsible for the sold-out games which = $$$.

AJ fires Marty at the end of the season for whatever reason and brings in Norv Turner who already has a losing career record as head coach. Now everyone is surprised that they're losing. Be serious, anyone could have seen this coming.

AJ, swallow your pride and admit it, you made a mistake. NOW FIX IT!!!

Toilet Duck wrote on Nov 18, 2008 2:54 PM:Too funny!

All that egg on Charger fan faces should be tough to remove.

This season is a perfect example of why you shouldnt talk smack until you actually win.

This is the beginning of the end to Chargers fans SB dreams.

It was all just a dream.

Im laughing hard right now.

Charger-nomics wrote on Nov 18, 2008 3:11 PM:Should have kept Marty, Turrner, and i see all of you have forgotten about one of the best fullbacks in charger history. Lorenzo Neal< Everyone he blocked for was a 1000yd rusher. He's not being used the right way in N.E.. Lt please just quit and go clean dogs & make your t.v. ads. Since you don't have will anymore to WIN.... It's very sad but the Raiders just might have a better record by season end! what the !!!

RAIDERMANN wrote on Nov 18, 2008 3:16 PM:Hey your right Mr. Duck, I think you called this at the beginning of the season. We need to meet up for a beer, and talk about Darth Al & company. And laugh about the Super Chokers!!! I'm up in C-Bad. How do hook-up?

See ya all at the Q wrote on Nov 18, 2008 5:06 PM:Destiny hasn`t fallen the Bolts way this year but next year everything could. The Raiders will get another Head coach & still be in line for the top pick in the 2010 draft. Hey Raidermann do you even watch your team anymore ? Hows Javon Walker doing ? & no 2nd round pick for your departed corner ?

Kentera wrote on Nov 18, 2008 5:15 PM:James?

Jimbo wrote on Nov 18, 2008 6:59 PM:Ric....you said it all. LT, Brees, and Marty were creating something special here in SD. LT knows it, but won't speak about it publicly. AJ wanted Rivers and forced him on Marty (who wanted Brees over Rivers). Then AJ forced Marty out. When LT's contract is up, there will be no more love for LT from AJ. He'll be pushed out as we continue to watch the steady parade of talent leave SD.

mike wrote on Nov 18, 2008 8:33 PM:LT is slowly declining, and at age 30 it will only get worse. charger fans are known for talking, and this team will continue to disappoint you every yr

Local wrote on Nov 19, 2008 3:57 AM:This is blasphemy. LT has many endorsements riding on his continued success. The taxpayers are paying part of his salary. We pay him to perform. This is PPH's ace. Step to it, LT!

Gene wrote on Nov 19, 2008 8:06 AM:My stomach is still hurting, with laughing about the Cha Cha season. I have to agree with Toliet Duck and the other San Diego Cha's Cha's haters. San Diego Cha Cha bandwagon fans are the type when they win a few games, they are telling everybody and their mother how the San Diego Cha's Cha's will be going to the Super Bowl, and it's only the third game of the season. Go Colts and Oceanside Pirates.

BoltDan wrote on Nov 19, 2008 9:02 AM:Marty ball looked like a genuis compared to the plays Norv is calling. Has anybody seen a reverse this year? Lt pass the ball? How about a sweep? Run in the middle, run in the middle, and then throw and hope Vincent Jackson holds on to the ball. Nice game plan. I think everyone knows it AJ!!! I said it last year and was boo'ed off the blogs...AJ's ego killed the Bolts. Fire a coach with a 14-2 record??? Bree's, LoNeal, Turner, how about Donnie in the middle??? his replacement Wilhem can't cover the slowest person out of the backfield. We need help and the first thing to do is fire Norv and pack AJ's bags too.

BoltDan wrote on Nov 19, 2008 1:25 PM:IN case you haven't heard the Spanoes have said Norv will be back in 2009. That is just great. Back a loser, become a loser. Maybe next year we can lose more then 8 games. (maybe theis year?)

Kracker wrote on Nov 19, 2008 4:56 PM:I think it's funny to watch these clowns choke. So much trash talkin' over the last few years and NO RING (not even one)to back it up. In this league you either put up or shut up! All that trash Rivers was talking last year to Cutler during the game... Not much to say now huh? Without your steroid takin' linebacker, No L.T. and Norv Turner, Look at the results... An average team AT BEST and TOTALLY OVER-RATED!!
