VISTA: City hires company to build sports park
By North County Times | ∞
VISTA ---- A San Marcos company has been hired to build a long-awaited sports park in a remote area of northwest Vista.
The Vista City Council unanimously approved a contract Tuesday with Lusardi Construction for what is expected to be a 12 month job. Work could begin as early as January.
Still unclear is how much the project will cost. The latest estimate is $15.9 million, but some key details are still unresolved.
The city had planned to build at the same time as a neighboring housing project. The home builder was going to construct a crucial road to the city's landlocked property and provide tons of excess dirt for the fields.
But with the economy in a slump, the residential project is stalled. That means the city may have to build the road and do some grading on the neighboring site under a reimbursement agreement, officials said.
The park is one of five capital projects that officials have promised to build with revenue from Proposition L, a sales tax increase voters approved in 2006. Construction is already underway on two fire stations, a civic center and a stage house at the Moonlight Amphitheater.
"This is the last piece of Prop. L to fall into place," Councilman Steve Gronke said.
Park designs include two synthetic turf soccer fields, three baseball diamonds, picnic areas and a foundation for a future 20,000-square-foot community center.

Taxpayer wrote on Nov 19, 2008 8:41 AM:Lusardi is a quality comapany that has a long great reputation.
However, this should upset the unions since Lusardi is also a non union company that pays their employees very well with a greaqt benefit package.
Good for Vista for selecting a them!

Anybody know where this actually is?
Vistan to Tater wrote on Nov 19, 2008 1:39 PM:It's called a 1/2% increase in sales tax for Vista to allow them to build their new state of the art city offices to match those that Escondido built along with their Arts Center years ago. So nothing coming without a price. You guys got yours a few years ago in good economic times now Vista is trying to pull it off in bad times.
Cheryl wrote on Nov 19, 2008 4:05 PM:This is great news. Pop Warner Football has waited years for this. The location is near the corner of Oceanside Blvd/Bobier and Melrose. I think a new entrance will be put there. North Santa Fe is on the other side.
Artsyrat wrote on Nov 19, 2008 4:10 PM:Yeh, Vista is really late in their progress, however...when the over priced City Hall and the Sports Park are finished (with a skate park), it should bring Vista up a couple of notches. We sure need it, Vista is so behind. I'm anxiously waiting for the S Santa Fe/Mercantile corridor to get started. I guess I better start looking for places in Vista to spend my money and increase the dying tax revenue here. That's just the problem...there are't very many good places to shop in Vista except a few places here and there.
sk8mom wrote on Nov 19, 2008 5:05 PM:I will spend my money elsewhere. Vista won't get a cent from me in sales taxes.15 million for some fake grass a few picnic tables and a foundation!! Why is the community center a "future project".?For that kind of money the building should be included.I guess they need another excuse to rob us later on.They are spending 11 million on the Moonlight and who knows what City Hall is going to cost. Reeks of kickbacks somewhere
VALL Dad wrote on Nov 19, 2008 9:03 PM:Hundreds of kids will benefit from this park. Not just a couple of dozen losers with tight black jeans photographing themselves as they faceplant off their skateboards.
The Moonlight brings in folks from all over. Patrons frequent local eateries before performances. That's a good thing.
Sk8RMOM, you just need a place to dump your kid when he's not playing video games. Get a collection, and buy the Linen N Things building yourself. Then your little hippie can ollie all day,,,,until he breaks his wrist again.
TATER to Vistan wrote on Nov 19, 2008 9:54 PM:ummm didn't you know that Escondido's Arts Center cannot support it's self?
14 years and they cannot even pay the electic bill. It's a big tax dollar sucking hole.
Note to you all*

Artsyrat wrote on Nov 20, 2008 8:29 AM:I don't think the area that Cheryl said is the proposed site.
The park is to be build closer to Guajome Park which is in Oceanside on N Santa Fe. The sport park of course is in Vista and it will connect by a path somewhere near Guajome Park.
They do plan to have a maintenance building and a general use building. They will also leave an open area for a future Community Center.
I like the whole idea! Vista needs to make some positive steps forward and sometimes these steps can be a gamble. Vista needs to move forward, not stand still with a bunch of chatter and promises.
Vista should also build a Spanish Village somewhere near townsite so all the visitors that go to the sports Park stop at the Spanish Village and spend their money on awesome food. A Spanish Village would have cultural Mexican, Indian, Mediterranean restaurants and shops. I know...I'm dreaming...huh.
jim wrote on Nov 20, 2008 9:20 AM:"vall dad" ever since they closed the skate park my kid and his friends find places in the city to skate and wreck all kinds of stuff doing it but as long as he gets good grades and the cops don't bug me about him i'm happy, its unfortunate you class every skater together as bad kids ...
