ESCONDIDO ---- A man suspected of stealing a car and leading police on a chase was caught Friday morning after he crashed the car he was driving near Palomar Medical Center, officers said.

Police received a report of a stolen vehicle early Friday, then saw a maroon Honda Accord matching the description about 9:30 a.m., Sgt. John Johnson said.

Officers pursued the vehicle along East Valley Parkway near Citrus Avenue for a short time. For safety reasons, the officers stopped pursuing the speeding driver near San Pasqual Valley Road at Idaho Avenue, Johnson said.

The suspected car thief later crashed the car into a red Honda Accord on East Grand Avenue, causing that car to smack into a truck in front of it.

"I was just waiting for the light (at Valley Boulevard), and he smashed into me," said Robert DeLillo, as he waited for a tow truck, his car crumpled in the front and back.

The suspect, a 17-year-old Latino male, fled the scene toward the hospital. He was caught shortly after and taken into custody, Johnson said.

The suspect suffered a minor injury. No other injuries were reported.

Todd wrote on Nov 21, 2008 1:36 PM:A latino man in Escondido? I think you're mistaken.

Question wrote on Nov 21, 2008 1:46 PM:So if these car thieves intentionally drive wrecklesly to get away from police, are they charged with intend to murder. Honestly they should. In this incident he could have killed a person.

White or Latino wrote on Nov 21, 2008 3:22 PM:The comment made by Todd is so ignorant. I am glad this perpetrator got caught and is in custody. His race is really not important to me but since he brought it up, is he not concerned about the two white bank robbers or the white man who assaulted the woman in Carlsbad and she died the next day. Geez people crime is crime and a criminal is a criminal no matter what their skin color is.

MVet wrote on Nov 21, 2008 4:19 PM:Gee what are the chances that the suspect was licensed and insured.

LOL

Would you believe slim to none. Maybe a learners permit.

FACTS wrote on Nov 21, 2008 4:35 PM:A 17 year old is not a man.Criminal or otherwise. A minor is a minor.
A teenager is a teenager.
Steeling is steeling.
Embellishing on the facts is lying.
Please report responsibly.

To Question wrote on Nov 21, 2008 4:57 PM:Felony Evasion would be the charge. Three years max in prison if no one's injured, ten years is someone's injured. Theft charges, resisting charges (if any), and anything traffic related (hit and run) get tacked on top of that. ....

To Lee wrote on Nov 21, 2008 7:34 PM:When will you people shrink from your ignorance! Two articles which are still available on line are about crimes committed by whites. The articles do not state their immigration status why should this be reported if the perpetrator is Latino? Let's see here is an excerpt of the report on the bank robbers apprehended in the Vista Bank of America robbery; "Vista residents Matthew Good, 49, and Robert Whalen, 27," should this go on to say they are American Citizens does that change the fact that they are bank robbers? Get real Lee not all Latinos are illegal immigrants and not all illegal immigrants are Latino. Stop with the stereotyping.

innocent bystander wrote on Nov 22, 2008 5:00 AM:9:30 a.m. on a Friday, a 17-year old should be in the middle of geometry class. Why was this guy not? Where are his parents?

RandyR wrote on Nov 22, 2008 5:03 AM:Imagine being taken into custody near a hospital with minor injuries to boot! Can anyone say, "Free Heathcare"!

JSten wrote on Nov 22, 2008 8:18 AM:So...

How many stupid 17-year olds are there out there?

Kid steals car, kid steal parent's car, kid steals grandparent's car, blah, blah, blah.

It used to be called joyriding. The kid must be really stupid not to have watched all those stolen/stupid person car pursuits on the TEEVEE that usually end up with the car trashed, and the kid in custody.

Nice touch about the kid crashing into a sinilar car.

Maybe its a gang thing, maybe the kid is just stupid. Race has nothing to do with this. I had a x[deleted]x neighbor once in Mira Mesa-his kid was the same kind of stupid. Cost me a set of tires, and most of my kid's possessions (X-box, videos, etc). As far as I can tell, my kids are not that kind of stupid, but they haven't made it to 17. Yet.

To Lee wrote on Nov 22, 2008 8:52 AM:I am surprised they even used the word Latino let alone Illegal Alien. Most stories like this will not reveal the immigration status of the individual or if the driver was licensed or insured.

So sometimes you just have to go with your gut feeling. If this suspect was over 18 I would check his name on the San Diego Sheriffs Inmate locater webpage, and there you have a good chance of seeing all of the charges, including if there is an immigration hold on the suspect. Just to be fair I check all suspects’ names to see which ones are illegal aliens.

The only time this does not work is if the suspect is a minor or is deceased.

There is generally a trend in North County crimes whether the media wants to admit it or not. / Skip

Skip wrote on Nov 22, 2008 9:04 AM:The terms "Latino" and "Illegal Alien" are so mixed up these days that it is hard to tell what the writer really means. Some stories in the NCT will say that there are mean spirited laws against Latinos, when they really mean against Illegal Aliens. You have the activists screaming racism against the Latinos, and very rarely using the term Illegal Aliens. The new politically term is “Foreign National”.

But getting back to this story I would figure that the suspect is a kid of Hispanic decent, and that is about all you really can tell.

Skip wrote on Nov 22, 2008 9:22 AM:Please check the definition of "JOYRIDING"

Someone just joyriding would just stop for the Police and they would not endanger the public by crashing into other cars. Now a car thief would be another story.

JSten, I have been around for a long time and this story does not indicate a "joyride". It used to be that people have respect for the Police.

To skip wrote on Nov 22, 2008 10:37 AM:I agree, people used to have respect for the law. Today's world is getting really sad. Everyone blames everone else for their own problems. Parents USED to be home for their kids, now it's parents want everything they can. Big houses, big cars, big boats RV's etc and kids are now paying the price for it all.

Brad wrote on Nov 22, 2008 3:55 PM:I for one am concerned about the bank robbers in Vista. Bank robbery is a federal crime and I want to know why local police were there apprehending the suspects? It's a federal problem!!

As for Illegals being all colors, you're correct, but here in So Cal, if someone were to offer you a hundred dollars for showing them an illegal, how many blonde scandinavian people would you point out?

MALES wrote on Nov 22, 2008 8:33 PM:Take away the Latino or illegal terms from crimes and you will be left with male. Most crimes are committed by males. Isn't it time women started discrimintaing against men everytime a crime is committed? Imagine that.

TARD wrote on Nov 22, 2008 8:57 PM:Just a kid being dumb ~ at 17 we don't think of the consequences of our actions. his race has nothing to do with it.

Semantics wrote on Nov 23, 2008 8:02 AM:I agree Bank Robbery is a Federal issue but when you enter an establishment and wield a knife or a gun and threaten injury that becomes a local issue. Immigration is a Federal issue and crossing the border without the proper documents is an offense which the punishment is deportation, not arrest. One cannot be arrested by local law enforcement if his or her only crime is crossing the border with out documents.
