CHARGERS ANALYSIS: Burning questions: There's more to Chargers' support of Turner than meets the eye
By JAY PARIS - Staff Writer | ∞
Chargers' general manager A.J. Smith talks with team president Dean Spanos. They say coach Norv Turner will returnj in 2009. (Photo by Don Boomer - Staff Photographer) SAN DIEGO ---- Norv Turner is coming back next season.
Is that good? Is that bad? Good question, and one we'll let others explore.
But what was the reason why the Chargers felt compelled to reveal their plans in public? Why would the Chargers seemingly lock themselves into a decision now, when it doesn't have to be made until later? Why does a coach with two-plus seasons on his contract and less than a year removed from the AFC Championship Game need to hear that his bosses have his back?
Solid inquiries all, and ones Chargers fans were contemplating on Thursday.
Calls to the Chargers Big Two ---- team president Dean Spanos and general manager A.J. Smith ---- would seemingly shed some light on this development. It's obvious that this issue will be explored ad nauseam Sunday night on national TV when the Chargers host the streaking Indianapolis Colts.
But Spanos, through a Chargers official, declined to comment. Smith didn't return a phone message seeking his two cents.
Even if Smith had reached out, his responses probably would have revolved around his favorite quote: "We don't discuss our football business.'' Um, you did regarding Turner.
That's what makes Wednesday's proclamation so interesting. The Chargers clutch their cards close to the vest as well as anyone. They don't like their laundry ---- soiled, spotless or otherwise ---- aired in public. They don't like giving hints on what they're thinking, what their options are, what they might do.
Unless they want to. Unless they have other motives than simply letting an embattled coach exhale. Unless they wanted a message to filter through a locker room loaded with underachieving players.
So what gives? Why would the Chargers take the extraordinary step of supplying a vote of confidence when the polls aren't even open? Why give an inclination of your long-term vision when six games remain in this dreary season?
Or did they, in regard to Turner? Don't overlook how fast things can change ---- ex-defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell is Exhibit A. Smith said he wouldn't make coaching staff adjustments during the bye week, and then gave Turner the OK to kick Cottrell to the curb.
So when hearing Wednesday that Turner will return in 2009, check the date and then check back. When calendars flip and teams flop, some decisions, as they say, are revisited.
The Chargers, thanks to playing in the dreadful AFC West, have a pulse despite trailing the first-place Broncos by two games. If the Chargers get on a roll, starting with the Colts, the Broncos must prove they can win while peeking over their shoulder.
And if the Chargers eclipse the Broncos and make the playoffs, then the chatter of Turner's exit will dissipate quicker than the Padres' season-ticket base.
But what if the Chargers continue their maddening knack for playing inconsistently? What if the defense continues to fold during a game's most critical stretches? What if Philip Rivers ---- his gaudy numbers notwithstanding ---- keeps committing crucial turnovers?
If that Chargers team shows up in the final six, you really think Turner couldn't get deep-sixed?
Of course, that's a road the Chargers hope not to travel. Instead they're banking that the potholes aiding their grand fall to 4-6 are history, as they accelerate into the playoffs for the fourth time in five years.
Smith wanted something to come out loud and clear when he made such a grand statement: Guys in uniform, it's on you, not Turner.
It's odd, in that Smith always states that you are a Charger for only a year ---- but he's made it clear that doesn't apply to coaches. While Smith quickly notes mitigating circumstances for Turner's sub-.500 record ---- mirroring his marks in two previous stops ---- that's doesn't hold true with his players.
You either produce or you are gone ---- unless you are the Chargers head coach. Well, this head coach anyway, as someone who once went 14-2 will tell you.
It's obvious that Smith's backing of Turner isn't popular with a fan base becoming more bitter with each snap. With a front office not discounting the "most talented roster in the NFL" mantra, the fans thought that meant a winning season. And when that didn't happen ---- yet anyway ---- they got restless.
So did Smith. By uncharacteristically telling the world he's comfortable with Turner, he's informing his players that they better not get cozy in lightning bolts.
Whether Smith views Turner in the same light come February will be determined. But the players should no longer be in the dark. If a team expected to reach the Super Bowl falls flat, the ax won't fall on Turner.
At least that was the word this week.

Realist wrote on Nov 21, 2008 5:42 AM:So now it is the players that are to blame? Wait, AJ said Marty was the problem! Same players, different coach...AJ is talking out of both sides of his mouth. I know WHO the problem is! It's AJ! Fire Marty, result: Lost AFC Conferenece game with team Marty built! Fire Ted Cotrell, result: Still can't stop a running game! Get REAL Charger fans...AJ has got to go...Seems He always seems to point the finger everywhere except at himself...If the players are NOW the problem, He brought them in! Get rid of the REAL problem AJ Smith!
To Realist wrote on Nov 21, 2008 7:35 AM:A bit bitter are we? :-)
AJ has done a great job for the Bolts.
Marty did not build the team, AJ did.
I was a Marty fan, but the fact remains, he could not win in the post season. Why go 14-2 if you aren't going to do anything with it. Norv took, what you say was the same players to the AFC Championship game where Marty lost in first round (once again your words the same guys). So, instead of being so bitter, get behind the team and support them.
kiwibolt wrote on Nov 21, 2008 8:18 AM:Your love of all things Marty has gotten ridiculous Jay. How easy is it to forget the 2002 team that started 6-2 and then finished 8-8 under Marty? You like to mention 14-2, but easily overlook the undisciplined team that tanked away the playoff game (with some help from some horrid sideline decisions). Marty's teams laid some major eggs during his tenure here.
Try reporting the facts for a change- rather than the facts filtered through your pro-marty/anti-AJ lenses.
Boltum wrote on Nov 21, 2008 9:31 AM:Realist, AJ did not build this team, Buddy Nix and all his scouts are the guys who packed their bags, left home, live out of a suit case, eat fast food and find the players! They found the core of this team, the Gates, Dielmans, Harts, Cesairs, Harris, Tucker, Floyd, Osgood, etc. and all the low round draft picks who make up the team. Marty, Wade and Cam developed them. When is AJ going to be held accountable for all his high draft pick flops? Sammy and Buster, Kiel and Waters to name just a few. When is AJ accountable for depleting the team of talent starting with Brees and getting NOTHING in return? When will he be held accountable for running off a 14/2 coach and replacing him with a sub .500 coach? JUST because Marty would not hire AJ's out of work, over the hill, buddy Teddy?!!!
Kentera wrote on Nov 21, 2008 10:02 AM:The reason they have lost in the playoffs with Marty was that this team was not a championship caliber team. Explain to me why you think it is all Marty's fault that they win during the season and then lose in the playoffs? They use to say the same thing about Bill Cowher, then he won a Super Bowl. The reason...he had a championship caliber team that year. He did things the exact same way the years they lost in the playoffs as he did when they won the Super Bowl. And to answer your question, Why go 14-2? Because you can't win a playoff game if you are not in the playoffs!

Players, they just don't have the will anymore. AJ let key players go & kept the wrong ones. Has for my Raiders, whens Baseball start!!!
Sam wrote on Nov 21, 2008 11:01 AM:Realist is just another delusional filtering knee-jerk fan.
Hey Realist, you remember when the Chargers went 12-4 and lost to the wild card Jets in the first round, when Marty ran the ball three straight times to settle for a 41 yard field goal, in the rain by a rookie kicker...remember that?
Oh, and then Super Marty followed that debacle the next year by missing the playoffs entirely...MISSING THE PLAYOFFS WITH AN UP AND COMING TEAM THAT YOU SAY HE BUILT...THAT WENT 12-4 THE YEAR BEFORE...RIDICULOUS and DELUSIONAL!
Fan Maybe wrote on Nov 21, 2008 11:01 AM:Lest you all forgot, we go STUCK with Norv because AJ and Marty had an end of the season spat that forced AJ and Spanos to make the move. The only coaches left were of the 3rd string variety and Novr was selected.
Now, things have changed again, Spanos wants out of San Deigo and having a lossing team with falling attendance numbers helps him accomplish that so Norv is a convenient scape goat.
Even if they make the playoffs, which in my opinion, will be because the players make it happen despite the really poor coaching from Norv it won't make a big difference to the Spanos and company because they working long range and will still need to find a suitable home for the team.
BoltDan wrote on Nov 21, 2008 11:10 AM:Kiwi and to realist are suffering from illness... Norvitas. Marty came in and made a team play. Pumped up his players, got the most out of what was given to him by AJ. His record speaks for itself 2 over 200 wins, How many does Norv have? yeah! Marty built relantionships with his players. Now AJ Has never built a relationship with any of his players. He will AXE anybody (look at the long list of players and coaches) and will soon axe more and you complacent rah rah types will love it. STOP believing what the media/AJ tell you and demand a winning team. AJ brought in Norv and he is failing, has failed, and will always fail as a head coach. Marty and his crew improved our beloved Bolts from 1-15 to 14-2 so don't dismiss his stamp because now we are seeing Norv/with AJ's stamp of crappiness. We have been Norv'ed and now we have to dig out.
The article says if Norv gets to play-offs all will be forgotten. WRONG. He might redeem himself if he wins a play-off game with his play calling but that is like saying housing prices are gonna go up real soon.
Realist wrote on Nov 21, 2008 11:35 AM:You get behind a team of losers. I am a Raider fan! I was thrilled when the chargers hired NoTurner! A Raider Reject! This ensured the losing ways of the chargers would continue. I am not bitter, only the REALIST. Get REAL and look at who built the teams players, AJ. He then banished Marty from his kingdom. Now AJ says it's the players letting them down. WHEN does AJ take responsibility for his actions. WHEN does AJ get held responsible for his actions. Do the math, AJ has run out of people to blame! Wait! He can blame the ownership! Choose the behavior, Choose the consequence. If you want to continue with your fantasy, go right ahead. That is not bitter, it is REALITY simply observed by the REALIST.

Every bitter pessimist claims they are a realist. Im not a Norv Turner fan at all, but I never for a second believed we should have kept Marty, losing two home games in the playoffs to teams we should have blown out is utterly inexcuseable. You call out charger fans in charger forums because you are bitter about your team being the laughing stock of the NFL. Hey hows this for a twist you guys should kill King Al and rehire Lane Kiffin, ive never been more worried about defeat than i was earlier this year and he came closer to it than you guys have since September of 2003. I think maybe Dean Spanos wants to covey solidarity by publicly stating his support for Norv Turner. That would keep down the controversy for the moment. I'm sure if Turner's efforts prove futile and the Bolts lose all their remaing games scheduled, Spanos will revisit his support and quite possibly search for a new head coach (I hope).
If the Spanos family do have major plans to take the Bolts out of town (as in Stockton or elsewhere) then tapping Norv for another year is the writing on the wall Turner doesn't come across as motivator who can communicate that extra above and beyond element successful coaches of winning teams have.
Anyway, regarding the possibility of the Chargers bailing SD, maybe we fans can do like they did in Cleveland when they sued to keep the Browns name in Cleveland while the physical team moved to Baltimore...never hurts to be ready. After all, we fans have d_cked around for far too long.

Before they came I rarely seen any and when they did come it was nothing but gang-bangers who hopped on the wagon. But there is some truth to what you said fans don't stay around long when your losing that's because this is also California and nothing but
a melting pot and not many true football fans. But I am and the problem with the Chargers is the Norv Turner, this guy is the 3rd worst coach in NFL history and last night is proof of that. He can't manage a clock or design a 4th down play that works. He has not imagination or guts.

Dude you have got to get control of this team. It doesn't look good for the team and for the fans that you are going to be here for the remainder of the season and have plans to return.
Norv, you have to admit that you are not a head coach and let alone manage a freakin game you need to learn how to call time outs. You also need to remember who you have on your team and use them to their abilities.
