ESCONDIDO: Bank robbery suspect in custody
By North County Times | ∞
ESCONDIDO ---- A man taken into custody Friday night was believed to be one of several suspects wanted for a takeover-style bank robbery earlier in the day, an Escondido police sergeant said.
The robbery was reported at the Washington Mutual at 326 W. El Norte Parkway a little before 6 p.m., Sgt. Doug Sams said. Witnesses told police that a woman in an older, silver sedan dropped off three men, two wearing masks, in front of the bank. Each armed with a handgun, the three entered the bank and ordered the bank's employees and lone customer to lie on the ground, Sams said. One of the men jumped over the teller's counter and took an undisclosed amount of cash.
The men left in a U-Haul parked in the bank's lot, Sams said. No one was injured in the robbery.
A little while later, an officer stopped a U-Haul going west on Highway 78 near Rancho Santa Fe Road in San Marcos, Sams said. The driver was alone in the truck, but as of 9 p.m. Friday, police believed he was one of the robbers.
Detailed descriptions of suspects were not available.
