NORTH COUNTY: CHP makes 32 DUI arrests

California Highway Patrol officers made 32 DUI arrests in San Diego County over the Thanksgiving holiday, down from 46 during the same period last year, the CHP reported Friday.

The arrests were recorded from Wednesday at 6 p.m. through Friday at 6 a.m. They took place during the agency's "maximum enforcement" effort, where extra officers patrol county freeways to look for drunk drivers.

No fatalities were reported during this year's period, while two occured during the same period last year.

CHP Officer Ray Scheidnes said it's difficult to say exactly why DUI arrests declined. One could draw a couple conclusions, including: "Either the weather (and related traffic accidents) had something to do with it, taking officers away from DUI enforcement. Or, there may have been less impaired drivers," the officer suggested.

Statewide, the CHP tallied 513 DUI arrests, down from 618 last year.

Fatalities statewide, however, increased from 12 to 15 this year.

The CHP's maximum enforcement will continue through Sunday night, Scheidnes said.

He added that the best part of this year's effort was the zero fatality total.

"It is definitely good news," he said.

TedHead wrote on Nov 29, 2008 3:33 AM:Most likely, more stoned drivers are getting away with it, maybe because they're on their handheld phones when the cops see them. Cops don't seem to be enforcing the phone law, so these driving derelicts get away with it. People have NOT stopped drinking and driving. NO WAY!!! Have another drink!

I too share your disease. Unfortunately, it is a fact that you will probably find no solace here. Too many have been harmed by our brothers and sisters.

I suggest taking your pain to those who are best equipped to help you. AA is in the book.

Good job CHP for doing your job well with out compromising the rights of the people. Applause! Applause! Perhaps Escondido Police Chief Maher might learn from this example of excellent police work. Thank CHP for a job well done and truly keeping our roads safe.

No-Spin wrote on Nov 29, 2008 9:13 AM:So statewide, DUI's are down dramatically. I wonder if this has anything to do with taking the vehicle's from unlicensed drivers? What's your take on public safety VS the illegal amnesty adgenda, ED SIFUENTES?

To No-spin wrote on Nov 29, 2008 9:35 AM:What is the illegal Amnesty agenda? Amnesty is an act granting a pardon to a group of individuals therefore they are no longer what they were before the pardon. I don't think public safety and the illegal immigrants are synonmous. My friend and her unborn baby were just killed in Vista by a driver who is an American citizen and the police refuse to release the information if he was under the influence. Your spin does not work in her case. Your spin does not work at all.
