PREP FOOTBALL: Oceanside back to business in rout of Lincoln

OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside High football team was eager to prove Friday night that its recent hiccup against Ramona was just that.
The Pirates returned to their winning ways in a big way, defeating visiting Lincoln 41-0 in the Division II CIF San Diego Section quarterfinals.
The top-seeded Pirates (10-0-1) entered the postseason coming off a disheartening 33-33 tie at Ramona. It was a result that got Oceanside's attention, and that's bad news for opponents.

"It was a wake-up call,'' Oceanside coach John Carroll said. "That could have been a blessing for us because everything was going too easy. We were routing everybody and the starters were only playing 2 1/2 quarters, or sometimes less. So that could have been the best thing to happen to us.''
The Pirates are headed to their 15th straight San Diego Section semifinal, and will host Scripps Ranch next Friday. By thumping Lincoln, the Pirates' unbeaten streak rose to 23.
Quarterback Jordan Wynn, who has committed to the University of Utah, was sensational in the first half, completing 12-of-17 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns. Wynn finished with 295 yards through the air.
Wynn quickly knocked the wind out of Lincoln, a 35-29 winner against Mt. Carmel last week. He clicked with DeMario Coleman on a 50-yard slant to cap the game's opening drive for a 7-0 edge.
On the next possession, the Pirates let Rene Siluano run 5 yards for a 14-0 cushion.
While the offense was cooking, the defense was hot as well, holding the Hornets (6-6) to 5 first-quarter yards.
Oceanside, the No. 4-ranked team in the state bowl standings, increased its bulge to 21-0 on Jake Fely's 4-yard scoring run. Wynn finished the first-half outburst with a 14-yard strike to Osmond Nicholas.
Wynn got plenty of support, with Fely running for two touchdowns and King Holder playing like a prince. Holder snatched eight passes for 122 yards and added 69 yards on six rushes.
"He's an explosive kid,'' Carroll said. "He's good with the football in his hands.''
The Pirates' final score came on a 44-yard run by Elijah Latham.
But save a hallelujah for the Pirates' defense. After giving up a season-high 33 points against Ramona, it was an inspired unit against the Hornets.
"During our week off we had to regroup,'' said defensive lineman Thomas Molesi, who had one of the Pirates' two sacks. "And we showed Lincoln how Oceanside can play.
"That Ramona game was one of our worst performances and we had to pick it up. It reinforced that we had to practice harder and be more disciplined.''
The Pirates' first shutout of the season puts them four quarters from Qualcomm Stadium for another trip to the finals.
"We're one win,'' Carroll told his team, "from our second home.''

Pirate wrote on Nov 29, 2008 8:43 AM:Oceanside looked sluggish with their "Turkey Hangover". Yet, they won. Lincoln scored 35 points on Cathedral ? And a average Point Loma almost beat Cathedral last night ? Lets rework the polls. As well, Forcier will get shut down like last years games.
BeastyPirates wrote on Nov 29, 2008 9:00 AM:Everyone in SD county better open their eyes now cuz these Pirates are even stronger and better now cuz this isn't the regular season anymore, this is the playoffs for cryin out loud and we're one win away from "our second home", which is the CIF championships in Qualcomm.....nobody can stop us now!!!
Oside is on a roll wrote on Nov 29, 2008 9:31 AM:O'side continues to roll people. To bad O'side isnt in D1 or LCC still in D2, because then we could have another game of the century, that was still one of the best games I ever saw. Muddy mess or not. They are the two best teams in SD.

1.Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks)
2.Cathedral Catholic (San Diego)
3.Orange Lutheran
4.Oceanside
Notre Dame loss to Orange Lutheran Last night which means Orange will most likely leap frog to number 1 over Cathedral. By the end of the playoffs Orange will probaly not make it past Tesoro next week. Which will Leave CC & Oceanside at 1 & 2 unless something happens. Remember Oceanside was number 4 last year for state bowl standings b4 the playoffs.

State Polls wrote on Nov 29, 2008 6:26 PM:Norte Dame did lose, Orange Lutheran has to get through 2 D-1 schools including LB Poly to win the State bid. If not, chances are that Oceanside or Cathedral may get a bid. Cathedral almost lost against Pt. Loma last night, and may have trouble with Steel Canyon and Vahalla. As well Oceanside may have trouble with Scripps, Helix or Eastlake.
Don wrote on Nov 29, 2008 6:36 PM:Oceanside gives up 33 points to an obviously overrated Ramona squad that loses at home to Steele Canyon. Cathedral rolled Steele Canyon on the road 48-6. Interesting!
STATE BOWL wrote on Nov 29, 2008 7:02 PM:Here is how it stands. Orange Lutheran is the only D-II team left in the powerful PAC-5 division. They have to not lose to either Tesoro, Lakewood, Esperanza, or Poly to get a bid to the State Bowl. So the San Diego D-II or D-III champion, if either Oceanside of CC may get the bid ?
Skinny wrote on Nov 29, 2008 7:51 PM:How come in the Oceanside/Coastal edition of the newspaper we have to go to page five of the sports section to see the story and pics of the Oceanside trouncing of Lincoln?
We have Carlsbad - # 2 in Div. 1 - La Costa Canyon - # 1 Div. 1 - Escondido - # 4 Div. 1 - all having their stories on Page one of the sports section. What the heck is wrong with the Oceanside Pirates?
Oh, that's right, they have one tie this year which was turned into a "Loss" if you read the stories.
Come on NCT, give the Oceanside Pirates their due.
Just because all the editorial control is in Escondido doesn't mean squat! Aren't your editions zoned to give news coverage appropriate to the zone? You know, the (W) at the top of the sports page by the date.

To Don wrote on Nov 30, 2008 7:08 AM:Cathedral gives up 34 points to Lincoln, and Oceanside shuts them out, interesting. Cathedral destroys Point Loma earlier in season, and through luck, barely beat them Friday, interesting.
Dont believe the Cathedral hype wrote on Nov 30, 2008 12:13 PM:They barely edge Lincoln and Mira Mesa. Oceanside killed them. If not for some late Gaffney TDs those games would have been lost. If Oceanside played Cathedral they would beat them by 20 pts. Too bad they didn't get the papers in on time to move up to D2. I hope the papers get it right this week.
To Scipps Alum wrote on Nov 30, 2008 7:51 PM:Are you sure of yourself and your team? Pirates offence is rocking and ready to put more points on the board again. The Pirates Defensive Leader #22 Vae'ena did not even have to step on the feild on Friday! Add him this Friday and we will be seeing our second home real soon. Pirates roll on!
LiberalHSPrepFootball wrote on Dec 1, 2008 11:00 AM:To be honest, Oceansides got the best squad in S.D county period. Cathedral remind me of E.C.V.H.S, & their QB had the same hype as Gaffney. Scripps QB Forcier has a passing block(equivalent of writers block) when it comes to the passing game. He dumps it off to the flat or runs a screen almost 90 percent of the time. Easy fix 3-4 cover 2 w/ both outside backers playing zone in the flat, that should maintain coverage and maintain outside containment.
State Bowl wrote on Dec 1, 2008 11:05 AM:If CC & Oceanside both win CIF. The state bowl decision will lie solely on common opponents and consistency. Which unfortunatly Oceanside will probaly get the bid over CC. They counter in all the recent titles and the fact Oceanside won state last year. If you ask me, I think CC & Oceanside should play eachother to see who will represent S.D.
Recipe for Scripps wrote on Dec 1, 2008 8:29 PM:On Madden, using Dime package and various zone blitzes I contained Michael Vick.I took away the outside flats with stay at home defence and blitzes from all angles. This will work on Tate Forcier ? If not, just play Pirate football !
