CARLSBAD: Woman campaigns to reduce cigarette trash
Surfrider Foundation to fund 150 collection devices on North County beaches

Dee Forsberg displays one of thousands of cigarette butts she has picked up on the beach, this one at Tamarack Beach in Carlsbad Saturday. (Photo by Bill Wechter - staff photographer) CARLSBAD ---- Walking the beach picking up trash last summer, Delinda "Dee" Forsberg of Carlsbad couldn't believe how many cigarette butts she found.
She became so irritated that she stuffed a huge trash bag with discarded cigarette butts, attached it to a light pole and left it for everyone to see.
Her act of defiance started a campaign that will give North County beaches 150 tube-shaped containers where smokers can deposit cigarette butts. The first device will be dedicated Monday at Tamarack State Beach ---- where Forsberg picked up trash last summer.
After Forsberg made her protest move, she contacted the city of Carlsbad, asking officials to do something about the cigarette problem.
They told her the beaches were state parks property, Forsberg said last week. So she called local state parks officials, and they told her that if she could find someone to pay for the specially designed containers, the state would maintain them.
Forsberg knew folks at the San Diego chapter of Surfrider Foundation, so she asked them for help.
"They said how many (collection devices) do you want, and I said, 'How many can you give me?' " Forsberg said.
The group purchased $10,000 worth of the devices, local chapter spokesman Ken David said.
"They are a very nice, polished stainless steel ... and they're very sturdily built," he said. He said that the containers look just like ones already at Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach.
State Parks will mount them on light poles near the beaches and can easily clean them out because they open at the bottom, David said.
State Parks officials couldn't be reached for comment during Thanksgiving week, but in a press release indicated that the containers will go at Carlsbad, San Elijo, Cardiff, Seaside, and Torrey Pines state beaches and parks.
Meanwhile, Forsberg is moving on to other campaigns. The executive recruiter now is trying to get lids on the beachside trashcans. That will keep birds from getting into the garbage, she said.
She jokes that she's rapidly becoming the "trash can lady of Carlsbad." Forsberg even wears a "Hold Onto Your Butt" T-shirt around town. Trying to explain to her 93-year-old, disbelieving dad that the shirt contained a positive, anti-littering message was very entertaining, she said, laughing.

Your Conscience wrote on Nov 29, 2008 7:07 PM:Does any reasonable person really believe that all those cigarette butts come from smokers on the beach? Come on, give me a break.
Storm drains, creeks rivers, and tides deliver debris from miles and miles away.
Seriously, when was the last time you were at the beach and saw even hundreds of people smoking and tossing their cigarette butts with reckless abandon?
This is another attention grabbing attempt by a 21st century Carrie Nation.
Great Job wrote on Nov 29, 2008 7:39 PM:You are wonderful. Thank you for your efforts. I have to ask. How can we stop the people from throwing their butts out their cars? We need to work on that next. I just don't know how to start since so many do this on the sly. They know it's not ok. After each drag on the cigarette their arm goes lower on the outside of the door. After the last drag, they let go. You know what I mean?
Next Project wrote on Nov 29, 2008 10:00 PM:Trying to control Cig Butts is fine, but maybe we can start a campaign to help to continually feed the poor or provide shelter in every city for the homeless. (Notice I said every city) Oh yea, we don't take about those things.... I guess trash is more important.
RandyR wrote on Nov 30, 2008 2:31 AM:Hmmm...I saw a few beers bottles/cans on the side of the road/freeways. Could you pick those up too? The smokers are always the targets...the lady in question, watch her...follow her, it's only a matter of time before you'll see her littering.
Dirty smokers wrote on Nov 30, 2008 5:22 AM:Now if we only get the smokers in cars to use the ash trays in their cars instead of putting loose change in them. Take a look at the gutters around stop light intersections, filled with cigarette butts. Filthy habbit, filthy people.
Smoker wrote on Nov 30, 2008 6:19 AM:There is no excuse for discarding butts on the ground. For years since traveling to Japan my wife and I have carried small portable, ash trays that close tight that will hold four to five butts until we get to a proper trash can. Those who throw their trash helter skelter are pigs, smokers or not.

I was told by the police that I needed evidence such as a video. GREAT JOB Delina for trying to do something about this problem. You can find cigarette butts all around the world and I wish that smokers would be more considerate. CHEERS TO YOU DELINDA.
RD wrote on Nov 30, 2008 8:56 AM:Cigarette butts are nothing, at least they are bio-degradable. Its the damn plastic grocery bags that are killing the wildlife and polluting the ocean.
Besides does anyone even really smoke anymore?
no conscious wrote on Nov 30, 2008 9:08 AM:regarding your conscious comments--

I am not a filthy person, I don't litter, and I don't start the fires from one of my "butts". I also don't smoke at the beach. How dare you call me names!! It's trash like you that makes trash everywhere around you.
TO Your Conscience wrote on Nov 30, 2008 11:17 AM:Even if it is from other sources the fact that these cigs are getting there by people who disgard them where ever they want is a problem. Don't be a litter bug. Don't trash our communities with butts or your trash period. That goes for everyone.
Wolfgang wrote on Nov 30, 2008 11:45 AM:At least this woman is doing something about a problem. The rest of you who do nothing but sit on your butts and complain are worthless.
Californian wrote on Nov 30, 2008 12:21 PM:My biggest pet peeve is cigarette butts trash. Who ever said they were bio-degradeable? Where do people get off throwing there trash-yes trash on the ground when they are done with it. Litter is litter! Like empty beer cans, McDonald's bags, dirty pampers left in the middle of the parking lot (don't get me started on that one). If you insist on smoking fine, just don't leave your trash behind. Take it with you. Keep California beautiful!

a non smoking mom of 3 wrote on Nov 30, 2008 2:34 PM:To Wow....Dirty Smoker : Yes, you are filthy. Your lungs are! I don't understand why smokers think its okay to make the rest of the world tolerate their dirty habit. When my next door neighbor starts smoking it stagnates in my entryway because it is in the air (which everyone else has to breathe). We also have to close our windows as well. I have small children who thankfully don't have asthma. Nonetheless, we don't need to be breathing in secondhand smoke.
I also know that I could tell if you smoke. Smokers have a certain odor. Yes, its an odor. You probably don't smell it because its on you all the time. Others do smell it. By the bay calling someone else "trash" is pretty low. Filth is different than trash. Here are two definitions for filth from dictionary.com 1. offensive or disgusting dirt or refuse; foul matter: the filth dumped into our rivers.
2. foul condition: to live in filth
Smoking is a filthy (offensive, disgusting) habit. Your lungs are also filthy (in a foul condition).
I think what this lady is doing is wonderful! I too hate seeing cigarette butts out in public, as well as those spots on sidewalks where people have spit out gum. equally as disgusting.

Artsyrat wrote on Nov 30, 2008 4:21 PM:You da bomb Dee! Good job on your tenacity. We live in Vista and noticed too all the cigg butts on the beach when we would go there. I brought my teen daughter and a couple of her friends to the beach last year and we did a clean up from north of the Pier in Oceanside to the end of the street along the beach south of the Pier. We were astounded at the trash we picked up including an enornoums amount of cigg butts. Ended up with a total of 8 trash bags full, some so full and heavy our bags were breaking from the metal items and the broken glass.
I tip my hat of respect to you Dee.

Butt Heads.... wrote on Nov 30, 2008 6:35 PM:Anyone who wishes to smoke should also be held responsible for their butts, maybe the libs can propose a refundable deposit for butts per back/carton, throw their cig butts into a container for which they can return them somewhere to get their un-burned chemically treated leftovers dealt with properly, also, the filtered ends of cigarettes aren't bio-degradeable, aren't they made with strands of fiberglass ..???
And my guess is the majority of butts on the beachs are from stuff washed up after being flushed into storm drains from roadways

Carlsbad bag lady wrote on Dec 1, 2008 7:51 AM:I, too, pick up trash every day in my neighborhood. The number one item I pick up? Cigarette butts. After that, fast food wrappers, bottles and cans. I will even pick up after your dog if you bag it. I've caught a number of smokers throwing their butts. When talked to, they always claim they are not the ones doing it. I guess some non-smoker is out there gathering up all the butts from ashtrays and putting them on the streets...

TO NON SMOKING MOM OF 3 wrote on Dec 1, 2008 11:38 AM:People drench their bodies with all sorts of smells. Why is this any less disgusting. Perfume oder spreds throughout a room much more than the smell of a smoker when not smoking. Do you use a product to give yourself an oder. If I can smell you you need a bath I don't care what that smell is. The lady in this article is doing a good thing. By the way I do not smoke.
smokenomor wrote on Dec 1, 2008 2:12 PM:Hurrah for someone trying to make a difference. Recently at the beach with my grandchildren I smelled cig smoke and went to the smoker and calmly stated,"I'm sorry perhaps you didn't realize this is a no smoking beach" She then put out her cigarette though the smell lingered 50 yards away. I mentiond to a friend that as I am allergec to cig. smoke I often drive with the vents closed on my car. This smoker stated she didn't realize that hanging her cigarette out the window while driving caused the smoke to go into other cars. Perhaps because smokers are so accustomed to the smell of smoke they don't realize how far the influence of smoke goes, much like those who wear perfume or fragranced lotions and sprays don't realize that thier odors linger long after they are gone from elevators ect.
Smoke this- wrote on Dec 1, 2008 3:44 PM:I smoke and throw the butts on the ground and I DON'T CARE! Clean up after me if you want, I pay my taxes so mind your own business. I see people on the beach that should be classified as "trash" so campaign against them too.
Go nanny and try to trample civil rights somewhere else.
Cassie wrote on Dec 1, 2008 8:10 PM:to smoke this - I hope you get caught for littering.
At least me and my family pick up our trash!
Also, at least perfume smells pleasant (when applied modestly) and yes, some people do overdo it. Smoking just smells bad no matter what. I too have to drive with my vents closed when someone else has a cigarette hanging out the window. I also can't stand Las Vegas. I am allergic to cigarette smoke so it really bothers me, walking through the casinos makes my eyes water like crazy. I don't think smokers realize this. Thank goodness smoking isn't allowed here in resaurants anymore!
BackCountryGuy wrote on Dec 1, 2008 10:00 PM:Tossing a butt on the beach is just littering, but throwing a still-burning butt out of a car window should get you charged with attempted arson. Many smokers hold their cigarette out the window and then toss them to avoid that "smoker's odor" in their car. The only way to get them to stop will be to confiscate their cars when they "toss".
