CHARGERS: Sunday's Report card

By MIKE SULLIVAN - Staff Writer | Sunday, November 30, 2008 9:07 PM PST

Quarterbacks ---– D-minus

Philip Rivers didn't even have a single 20-yard completion and seemed to never quite get into the flow. He didn't throw any interceptions but did get flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone for an Atlanta safety.

Running backs ---- F

Another rough day for LaDainian Tomlinson whose 24 rushing yards was the second-lowest output of his career. At his pace of 1.7 yards per carry, Tomlinson would've need to carry the ball 59 times to reach 100 yards. Jacob Hester (28 yards) had more yards on a fake-punt run.

Receivers ---- D

So much for chatter that the secondary is the weak link of the Falcons' defense. Couldn't tell by the production of the Chargers' wideouts. Malcom Floyd finished with five receptions, but he had the one and only reception by a wide receiver through the first three quarters. Vincent Jackson was shut out and Chris Chambers had one catch for 2 yards.

Offensive line ---- F

Kris Dielman's absence (flu) haunted the Chargers in the final quarter when backup Scott Mruczkowski was beaten twice for sacks by Justin Babineaux. Mike Goff and Jeromey Clary were called for false starts and Nick Hardwick was flagged for holding. Marcus McNeill did a credible job on John Abraham, but it was Abraham with the pressure that caused the safety. The running game was again atrocious.

Defensive line ---- D

Michael Turner rushed for 120 yards and Matt Ryan (he's the quarterback with the clean jersey) had so much time he could have sat in the pocket and broken down tape of New Orleans, the Falcons' next opponent. Jamal Williams had another solid day with six tackles.

Linebackers ---- D-plus

Brandon Siler and Tim Dobbins came up big on an impressive goal-line stand that kept Atlanta from making the game a runaway before halftime. Shaun Phillips and Jyles Tucker both had one good shot at sacking Ryan; instead the defense failed to notch a sack for the third time this season.

Secondary ---- D-plus

Eric Weddle had 10 tackles and scored his first career touchdown on an 86-yard fumble return. Quentin Jammer had eight tackles and forced two fumbles, recovering one of them. Antonio Cromartie was nonexistent and not just on the stat sheet (zero tackles and zero passes defensed). Ryan had a 130.2 quarterback rating and played pitch and catch with Roddy White (112 receiving yards).

Special Teams ---- C

Excellent execution on the fake-punt play (great block, Legedu Naanee) in which Jacob Hester rumbled for 28 yards. Hope the kickoff reverse to Naanee worked better in practice because it sure looked ugly during a game. Nate Kaeding had a field goal blocked and Mike Scifres (43.5 average) even had a poor punt.

Coaching ---- F

The Chargers' winning percentage this season (.333; 4-8 record) is somehow more than 100 points lower than Norv Turner's career winning percentage as a head coach (.436; 73-95-1 record). The fans are voicing their opinion (No on Norv for 2009) with boisterous words, few of them printable.

richard wrote on Dec 1, 2008 7:27 AM:hey you figured it out sullivan the fans dont like norv. well there has been only a few of us that been on the fire norv band wagon since he was hired.I know i have been because i remember Washington mess real well and do i say Oakland. Its funny norv has a track record of taking one coaches team to the plaoffs then failing with his own . Whys that you say , because he cant evaluate and motavate personell. I for one will be happy to see him fired, the Spanos family need to also fire A.J. Smith then hire Marty as GM and Bill Cower as head coach this will save a team thats fallen apart at the seams. This does not take a rocket scientist to understand what went wrong.

Fan Maybe wrote on Dec 1, 2008 8:44 AM:Mr. Sullivan, thank you an honest "report card"! And you are right, the main cause is Norv's coaching philsophy of not lossing games instead of playing to win like the quality teams do week end and week out.

Sam wrote on Dec 1, 2008 2:17 PM:Not Good....Fix it...somehow, some way...

The only two good things out of yesterday...Malcolm Floyd has been established.

Brandon Siler is the next Rodney Harrison but rather at linebacker...I remember watching Harrison when he was a back up and playing special teams for the Chargers...He was physical, making plays and nasty...I thought someday that kid was going to start and be a pro bowler...I see the same in Siler...nasty, physical, playmaker and passionate...He will be starting next year in his third year...

Jimbo wrote on Dec 1, 2008 5:23 PM:We have wasted too much time on Rivers. He has squandared the teams chances to win a SB. Get rid of AJ, Rivers, and Norv. Send them all to Detroit. It would be an upgrade for both the Lions and the Chargers.

James wrote on Dec 1, 2008 9:36 PM:Hey Jimbo,

I see your boy Brees blew another game with three interceptions and they will miss the playoffs for the second straight year...

Jaque wrote on Dec 2, 2008 7:11 AM:The one play I cheered for was one that didn't work out. It was 3rd and goal or something for the Chargers, and a bootleg type of play was called. It caught me by surprise, and that in itself made it a hellova play despite going for no gain.

Wow....look at Eli and the G-men. Another Superbowl win? Maybe he really was thinking when he said he didn't want to play for San Diego.

BoltBacker65 wrote on Dec 2, 2008 11:59 AM:The report card is pretty much right on the money except for the C you gave the special teams...yeah the fake punt was great, but overall, the kick off coverage team couldn't prevent the Falcons from getting great field postion on returns Their actual grade shuold be D+. You know D as in "Denmark" as in "Something is smelly in..."

RandyR wrote on Dec 2, 2008 3:03 PM:I'm ready to step up and take over the reins of Head Coach of the San Diego Charger's! I may have only played high school football...but I can promise the fan base this much: I'll provide more wins than the miserable coach in place!

Jimbo wrote on Dec 2, 2008 7:15 PM:Hey James, better get your facts straight dude. Brees is an NFL MVP candidate (again). Brees is literally carrying the Saints on his back because they can't run the ball. Rivers, OTOH, is meathead from a division II school who couldn't carry the gatorade. Rivers' is not a team player, laughs and smiles when he throws a dump interception, his teammates don't like him, and has a big mouth. Brees is a leader and an inspiration to New Orleans. Rivers' is just a paycheck player. BTW, Brees soundly whipped the Chargers and Rivers this year...nuf 'sed.
