This holiday season brings an opportunity for Temecula and Murrieta area families to host an exchange student coming to the area from Japan.

From Dec. 22 to Jan. 3, there will be 17 students from an all-girls Christian high school who will need hosts as they take part in an intensive English culture study program.

"This is a chance for hosts to learn about another culture while also sharing our culture with others," said program coordinator Veronica Pfohlman.

Hosts can be families, couples or single women, she said. A preference is for the host to live in the Temecula or Murrieta area because the students will need to be taken to Grace Presbyterian Church in Temecula each day for classes, Pfohlman said.

Along with morning classes, the students also will take part in local activities each afternoon.

Hosts are invited to go along with their student and events include a trip to San Diego on Dec. 29 and a day at Disneyland on Dec. 30.

The girls, all 15 and 16 years old, have taken English courses in Japan and speak English, Pfohlman said.

"They are usually rusty (with the language) when they first get here, but by the time they leave it's amazing how well they speak English," she said.

While having high-school age children is not a requirement for host families, Pfohlman said "that sometimes makes it a little easier to help keep them entertained."

Potential hosts must provide references who will be contacted and Pfohlman makes a personal visit to each candidate's home.

The program is sponsored by American Culture Concepts and more information can be found at www.americancultureconcepts.com.
