Escondido Women's Club to meet

ESCONDIDO ---- The Woman's Club of Escondido will hold a luncheon meeting at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 5 at its clubhouse, 751 N. Rose St.

The program will feature broadcaster Doug Best, who will be playing music from the '30s, '40s, and '50s and will speak about his experiences with such stars as Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller and Ella Fitzgerald. Best has been broadcasting for the past 50 years.

The club will also be hosting the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership winners from last spring and their parents.

Adult School quilting classes

ESCONDIDO ---- Magic 9-Patch Quilt classes will run on Tuesdays from Jan. 6 to Feb. 3. Classes will go from 1 to 4 p.m. or 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Level 1, Level 2 and Beginners classes will be available. Suzanne Stanton teaches at 463 Midway Drive, Suite 100, Room 1. The instruction book is $5 and the class fee $30. SeniorNet starts 2009 classes in January

FALLBROOK ---- The Foundation for Senior Care, 135 S. Mission Road in Fallbrook, will hold registration for SeniorNet's winter classes from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 7 and 14 . Daughters of the American Revolution meeting

VISTA ---- The Rancho Buena Vista Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 9 a.m. Jan.10 at the Shadowridge Country Club. There will be a short business meeting after a continental breakfast. Cal State San Marcos professor Laura Makey will discuss "Origins & Destinations ---- How We Got From There to Here." Free workshop on digestion

Palomar Amateur Radio Club meeting

Palomar Audubon Society field trip

ESCONDIDO ---- The Palomar Audubon Society has scheduled bird watching at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 10 at Dixon Lake and Daley Ranch. The parking lot for Daley Ranch is off El Norte Parkway on the east side of town. Go to La Honda Drive and turn left, then go 1 mile to Daley Ranch. Meet at the trailhead kiosk. American Legion family hosts food baskets

ESCONDIDO ---- The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the Legion, and American Legion Riders recently distributed 33 food boxes, gift certificates and toys to military families, needy families and needy senior citizens. The baskets were delivered Dec. 21 at the Veterans Memorial Building in Escondido where Santa Claus appeared for more than 50 guests.

Hearing loss association meets in Escondido

ESCONDIDO ---- The Hearing Loss Association of Escondido will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 10 at the Joslyn senior center auditorium, 210 Park Ave., Escondido. The canine companions for independence will bring a hearing dog and demonstrate the benefits for the hard of hearing.There will be a 50-50 drawing and refreshments. GIA donates to underprivileged children and families

CARLSBAD ---- Students and staff at the Gemological Institute of America recently collected more than $8,000 in food, gifts, toys, cash, and other supplies to benefit the nonprofit organization Voices for Children in San Diego. This group is devoted to helping abused, neglected, and abandoned children who have been removed from their homes and placed under the protection of juvenile court.

RB Rotary Club adopts needy family for holidays

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club recently raised more than $675 to provide new clothing and toys to an anonymous North County family of five. The family was chosen by the Poway Unified School District. The Rotary Club meets at noon on Thursdays at the Bernardo Heights Country Club. Visit rbrotary.org.
