There was a lot of enthusiasm in the Padres clubhouse this morning with six Padres -- Kevin Kouzmanoff, Heath Bell, Kevin Cameron, Mike Thompson, Cla Meredith and Paul McAnulty -- participating in their first Opening Day.
Kouzmanoff said he arrived with Russell Branyan and Geoff Blum and was warmly greeted by several San Francisco fans.
One person attached to the club who had a particularly good day was Bill Giles, father of Brian and Marcus Giles. For the first time in seven years, the Giles family didn't have to miss one of their sons' Opening Days since the two are both with the Padres.
The Giles brothers, batting 1-2 in the order, were the first brothers to do so since July 5, 1965 when Matty and Jesus Alou accomplished the feat, according to the Elias Sports Bureau and Padres spokesperson Leah Tobin.
"It's a seven-year dream come true," Bill Giles said.
Giles said around 2000 the family realized Marcus, a 53rd-round draft pick, had the potential of following Brian's footsteps to major-league baseball. And that's when they started hoping the two -- who have never been on the same team -- might one day play together.
There were attempts to get together when Brian became a free agent after the 2005 season and thoughts Marcus might be traded from the Braves to the Padres before the waiver deadline last season, but the Giles family finally got their wish this past offseason.
And now Bill is enjoying the benefits, milling around the clubhouse, walking on the field during batting practice and enjoying the pregame festivities.
Now he has one more wish.
"The Giles boys go back-to-back (home runs)," Bill Giles said. "I'd like to see that on 'SportsCenter.' "
