The Boston Marathon is a cool event.
It's on a holiday, albeit a regional one. Patriots Day ends an anguishing month for Bostonians. Not since St. Patrick's Day have they had an excuse to drink at 8 a.m. The Red Sox are always home, and it's a good doubleheader to catch a bit of the race and a bit of the game.
For runners, the history of the event keeps bringing them back. Tell someone you've run a marathon, and they will be impressed. Tell them you've run the Boston Marathon, and they'll want details.
Every year, a good number of North County runners earn some storytelling time by overcoming Heartbreak Hill to complete the marathon. This year is no different.
Here's a list of locals who competed Monday. Apologies to anyone who might be missed, but your stories will be no less compelling.

Football notes
Former Chargers lineman Kendyl Jacox made a free-agent visit to the Cardinals. He played for the Dolphins last year. …
Offensive lineman Johnathan Ingram did well enough in his minicamp tryout to land a contract with the Dolphins. Miami also signed running back Ray Perkins, a former Chargers practice squad player. …
Mission Hills High alumnus Robert Schenck, trying to work into Fresno State's rotation at linebacker, might need hamstring surgery. …
Actor Carl Weathers, he of Apollo Creed fame, married Jennifer Peterson over the weekend in Mexico. What's this celebrity buzz doing under a football header? Weathers played football at San Diego State way back when.
Around the majors
Congrats to Fallbrook High alumnus Matt Chico for picking up his first major-league win Monday night. Associated Press coverage is in the North County Times print edition. …
Rancho Buena Vista High alumnus Dave Roberts bristled whenever manager Bruce Bochy sat him against left-handed pitchers during their two years together with the Padres. Roberts was in the Giants' lineup Monday against Colorado lefty Jeff Francis. Roberts was 1-for-4 in the game, but his last two outs came against right-handed relievers. Against Francis, Roberts was 1-for-2 with a walk. And the hit was a triple. Guess Roberts was right to resist those Padres benchings. …
Troy Glaus' bum left heel needs more time to heal, so the Toronto Blue Jays will put the Carlsbad High alumnus on the disabled list.
Minor leagues
Chris Carpenter's trip to the disabled list brought ex-Padres lefty Randy Keisler up from the minors and into the Cardinals' rotation. The ripple effect is that Fallbrook High product Troy Cate has moved from the bullpen to the rotation for Triple-A Memphis. He pitched five shutout innings Sunday against Oklahoma.
College baseball
The University of San Diego is ranked 19th this week in the Baseball America poll and 18th in the Collegiate Baseball rankings.
Titans take a trip
The Poway High girls lacrosse team has four games this week in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. That caught the attention of the Burlington County Times, which gave the Titans a write-up.
Connect the dots
Encinitas resident Steffen Peters will represent the U.S. in the World Cup Dressage Finals in Las Vegas. The event begins Wednesday. …
Yep, we've got more equestrian news. Carmel Valley's Tiana Coudray won a World Cup qualifier eventing competition at Galway Downs. …
Poway High alumnus Marvelle Wynne scored a goal for the Red Bulls on Sunday in a 4-1 victory over FC Dallas. The bad news is it came in a reserve game, not the MLS matchup. Hunter Freeman replaced Wynne in the lineup for the game that counted. …
Marcus Slaughter had a big game for his Turkish team, registering 23 points and 19 rebounds as Pinar Karsiyaka beat Turk Telekom 78-68. …
Rancho Santa Fe product Liz Halliday and co-driver Antonio Garcia finished fourth in the Le Mans Series season opener. …
We mentioned a couple days ago that Torrey Pines High alumnus Todd Demsey is 6-for-6 making cuts on the Nationwide Tour this year. Turns out he's the only player to play through the weekend in all six tour events this year.
