Bankruptcy workshop
ENCINITAS -- A free workshop on bankruptcy issues for consumers and small businesses will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. May 20. It will take place in the Sandcastle Room, Encinitas Inn and Suites.

Summit Rancho Bernardo tour
RANCHO BERNARDO -- CREW (Commercial Real Estate Women) San Diego will host a luncheon and building tour of Summit Rancho Bernardo from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday.
The building is at 16550 W. Bernardo Drive. The Class A Office/R&D campus includes LEED-certified, high performance buildings. The campus consists of 11 architecturally distinct office towers of five to nine stories and approximately 3.2 million rentable square feet.

'Plates for 8' networking luncheon
OCEANSIDE -- A "Plates for 8 Luncheon" will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 27 at Hunter Steakhouse, at the southeast corner of Vista Way and I-5, next to Amazon Bikes.
The luncheons provide a chance for eight to 10 chamber members to gather and learn more about each other's businesses. A chamber representative hosts the luncheon at a local restaurant.

SAIC's Lawrence Prior to speak at chamber
SCRIPPS RANCH -- Lawrence Prior III, the chief operating officer of Science Applications International Corp., will speak about the marketplace in a breakfast presentation May 28 sponsored by San Diego North Chamber of Commerce.
The presentation will be held at 8 a.m. at Alliant University, 10455 Pomerado Road. Check-in and continental breakfast start at 7:30 a.m.
Prior will discuss the challenges and opportunities SAIC sees in the marketplace today. He was chief administrative officer for the County of San Diego from 1996 to 1999.
Now in its 40th year, San Diego-based SAIC has grown from a few individuals working in a small La Jolla business to a company with 45,000 employees working out of 150 cities. The engineering and technology company is a major defense contractor, with stock valued at $7.2 billion on the New York Stock Exchange.

Small business center offers help
Small companies from North San Diego County to Temecula are eligible for free help from the Small Business Development Center North San Diego County.

The center offers consulting services such as: business plans, financing; getting certified as a small business, disadvantaged business, women owned, minority or veteran owned; Caltrans contracting; and help with marketing, financial and accounting systems.
The center was established 10 years ago and is funded by the Small Business Administration, the community college district and hosted by MiraCosta College.
Pandemic flu workshop
San Diego Business Healthcare Connection will hold a free workshop on how to plan for pandemic influenza from 7:30-11:30 a.m. June 3.
The workshop will take place at the Sheraton Hotel in Mission Valley, and includes breakfast and refreshments. It will provide information on the effects pandemic influenza can have on a business, along with detailed instructions on how to use this information in a business continuity plan.

CARLSBAD -- Appy Newz, an iPhone and iPod Touch application from Appy Entertainment, has received endorsement as a "staff favorite" on Apple's App Store. The application lets users spotlight friends and family on spoof news covers.

Rolling Hills Elementary School renovation complete
RANCHO PENASQUITOS -- Poway Unified School District and contractor Barnhart Inc. announce completion of the $9.2-million renovation of Rolling Hills Elementary School.
Begun in June 2008, the renovation included the administration building, four classroom buildings, the library, a multipurpose building, six permanent portable buildings and construction of a kitchen building and installation of electrical service.
Rolling Hills Elementary School was built in 1978 and is at 15255 Penasquitos Drive, San Diego. The project was funded by Bond Measure C, which was passed in February 2008 and authorized a total of $179 million for 24 schools in the district.
NTD Architecture was the lead design firm. Barnhart personnel managing the renovation included Senior Vice President Dave Roach, Project Manager Cindy Stevens, Construction Manager Kathryn Moroz, Field Superintendent Bob Parsons and Field Engineer Ed Watte.
Valley Elementary gets $2K
POWAY -- Engineering and planning company PBS&J of Carlsbad has given $2,000 to Poway's Valley Elementary Educational Foundation.
Funding for the donation was provided through The PBSJ Foundation Inc. The funds will be used for Valley Elementary's dual language program, which was established six years ago as a pilot program.
The goal of the dual language program is to teach subjects in English and Spanish to create fully bilingual students by grade 6.
Businesses honored for environmental excellence
VISTA -- The Encina Wastewater Authority has recognized four businesses from Vista for environmental compliance.
The businesses received Gold Awards for perfect environmental records complying with industrial wastewater regulations in 2008. They are: Hubbard Industries; Cintas Corp; J&D Laboratories; and Natural Alternatives.
