The deadline is approaching for buyers of Microsoft software to get computer software or hardware rebates under terms of a $1.1 billion class action settlement with the state of California.
Businesses and individuals who bought products such as Microsoft Windows, DOS, Office, Excel, Home Essentials or Works Suite between Feb. 18, 1995, and Dec. 15, 2001, are eligible for the deal. They will get vouchers entitling them to cash rebates for products purchased after July 18, 2003. Product ID numbers are sufficient to establish ownership.
The products purchased do not have to be Microsoft products.
The reimbursement voucher value varies with the software bought. For example, participants will get $29 for each Microsoft Office license claimed, $26 for each Excel license, and $16 for each license of Windows or DOS.
The vouchers must be submitted along with proof of purchase of software or hardware made after July 18, 2003. Participants will then get a check for the voucher amount claimed.
To participate, submit a claim form available from www.microsoftcalsettlement.com so that it is postmarked by March 15. The Web site also contains more information about the settlement.
More information can also be obtained by calling a toll-free number, (800) 203-9995.
