JMAR Technologies Inc. said it received $3.1 million Tuesday from Naval Air Systems Command to continue its work to help supply the command with radiation-proof computer chips.

The Carlsbad-based company produces equipment meant to help create the chips. It also produces lasers and laser-compatible technology that allow the chips to be almost radiation-proof and contain more and more memory.

The new money would be added to the existing $17.5 million already awarded to the company by the Naval Air Systems Command. The contract would last until next August. Then the Naval Command will assess the project's progress before determining whether to renew it for another year.
