Business News in Brief: Local gas prices hit new record

NORTH COUNTY - The average cost of a gallon of unleaded gas in North County rose to an estimated $3.44 per gallon on Friday, setting a new record high, according to the Utility Consumers' Action Network. The previous high was $3.414, recorded on May 14.

Victory Pharma to market Naprelan

CARMEL VALLEY - Victory Pharma Inc. has acquired the exclusive U.S. marketing rights to its leading marketed pain product, Naprelan. Under the final agreement, Victory paid $8.75 million to Hi-Tech Pharmacal Co. Inc. and Stat-Trade Inc.

Naprelan is a branded formulation of naproxen sodium, used to reduce pain.

ViaSat receives $90M contract

CARLSBAD - ViaSat Inc. has been selected by the General Services Administration Federal Technology Service for a five-year, $90 million contract to provide ViaSat satellite communication products and services to government agencies. All agencies of the federal government, including the Department of Defense, can use the contract to buy satellite communication systems, information assurance products and engineering services.

AMN reports 12 percent increase

CARMEL VALLEY - Health care staffing company AMN Healthcare Services Inc. reported revenue of $283.9 million, an increase of 12 percent from $254.3 million reported for the first quarter of 2006.

The company reported earnings per share of 23 cents for the first quarter of 2007, compared with 24 cents for the same quarter a year ago.

Realty Income up in first quarter

ESCONDIDO - Realty Income's revenue for the first quarter ended March 31 increased 29.4 percent, to $71.3 million, compared with $55.1 million for the same period in 2006.

Net income for the quarter ended March 31, 2007, was $30.3 million, or 30 cents per share, compared with $22.5 million, or 27 cents per share, for the first quarter of 2006.

BioMed Realty reports rise

RANCHO BERNARDO - BioMed Realty Trust Inc. says that total revenues for the first quarter of 2007 increased 58.7 percent, to $69.5 million, from $43.8 million in the first quarter of 2006. Net income for the first quarter of 2007 increased 255.6 percent, to $16 million, compared with $4.5 million in the same quarter a year ago. Net income per share increased 150 percent, to 25 cents for the first quarter of 2007, from 10 cents in the comparable period in 2006.

Santarus' revenues rise in 1Q

CARMEL VALLEY - Santarus Inc., which develops drugs for gastrointestinal disorders, says that total revenues for the first quarter of 2007, ended March 31, were $19 million, compared with $6.5 million in the first quarter of 2006.

The company reported a net loss of $16.4 million, or 32 cents per share, for the first quarter of 2007, compared with a net loss of $19.9 million, or 45 cents per share, for the same quarter in 2006.

ATC experiences 54 percent jump

RANCHO BERNARDO - American Technology Corp., which makes devices that produce tightly focused audible sound from ultrasonic waves, says that for the second fiscal 2007 quarter ended March 31, it had revenues of $2.26 million, a 54 percent increase from $1.47 million in revenues for the same quarter of last fiscal year. The company says that revenues increased due to sales of Long Range Acoustical Devices, or LRADs, to a growing number of customers.

The net loss for the quarter ended March 31 was $1.03 million, or 3 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $2.63 million, or 11 cents per share, for the same period ended March 31, 2006.

For the six months ended March 31, 2007, American Technology reported revenues of $6.17 million, an 82 percent increase from $3.39 million for the same six months a year ago. The net loss for the six months ended March 31 was $1.55 million, or 5 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $3.4 million or 14 cents per share, for the comparable period in 2006.
