Newspaper with a heart
In addition to the North County Times Charities Fund, the North County Times supports a number of charitable initiatives in the communities it serves:
North County Honor Campaign — Thanks to $1 million in matching funds from the Howard Charitable Foundation, the North County Honor Campaign has raised more than $1.5 million for children of local Marines, sailors and other military personnel killed in action during operation Iraqi Freedom. Each child receives $15,000 for their education. The Honor Campaign will exist as long as U.S. military personnel are overseas.
Newspaper in Education —Thousands of schoolchildren use the North County Times as “Living Textbooks” in their classrooms. Lesson plans are provided to teachers.
Hawker program — Alpha Project/Casa Raphael is the residential recovery program for homeless men. The North County Times provides free newspapers to alpha clients, who sell or “Hawk” the paper on local street corners. These men keep all proceeds earned to support their new lives as productive members of society.
