North County Honor Campaign
Contributions matched 2 to 1 by the Howard Charitable Foundation
Fund raising continues for the North County Honor Campaign, which supports the education of children of North County Marines and sailors killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom 1 and 2.
When the war in Iraq began, many people asked what they could do to help the families of Marines and other local troops who died in the conflict. After consulting with the commanding general at Camp Pendleton, the North County Times and the Howard Charitable Foundation established the North County Honor Campaign in April 2003 to support the education of children of those who gave their lives in service to our country.
Up to $1 million in matching funds was pledged by the Howard Charitable Foundation to support the campaign. This lead contribution has allowed donations to be matched two-to-one. The campaign continues as long as our troops are involved in the conflict and peacekeeping efforts in Iraq.
Beneficiaries of the North County Honor Campaign are children of Marines and sailors in units deployed from Camp Pendleton, Miramar, Twentynine Palms, and Yuma, Arizona. In addition, it includes children of other service members with residence in North San Diego and Southwest Riverside counties.
For each child, $15,000 is used to purchase "I" type U.S. Savings Bonds intended for educational use. I Bonds are purchased at their face value.
100 percent of donations and matching funds go to the cause. Administrative costs are paid by the North County Times and the Armed Services YMCA at Camp Pendleton, which administers the campaign.
More than $1.2 million has been raised to date, and $945,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds has been given to, or ordered for, a total of 63 children. The fund is administered by the Armed Services YMCA at Camp Pendleton.
Contributions may be made to "North County Honor Campaign" and sent to the Armed Services YMCA. We sincerely thank all current and future donors for supporting the children of those in North County who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
