Bailey Warner is stealing quite a few scenes from her adult co-stars in the new comedy "Lucy," which opened last weekend at THEATRX in Escondido. At the young age of 2, Bailey is in her eighth production here.
Artistic director Stephen Storc wrote the comedy to revolve around Bailey. Her parents, Cheryl and Sam Warner, play Lucy and Ricky Ricardo based on the characters in the 1950s-era "I Love Lucy" television series. The comedy's loose plot centers around the couple's desire for a baby. Lucy and her pal Ethel come up with an idea to borrow a neighbor's toddler so Lucy can practice being a mother. Enter Bailey.
And enter she does, hamming it up all the way, grinning from ear to ear, and capturing the hearts of the audience.
The Warners are seasoned performers on the THEATRX stage, marking their 15th production with "Lucy."
Cheryl Warner uses her adeptness with facial expressions -- along with a bright red wig -- to mimic Lucille Ball. Sam Warner, with his hair dyed black, captures the Spanish accent and body language for the character made famous by Desi Arnaz.
Julie Elghanian is true to form as Ethel Mertz. Mark Lansing is disguised enough to pull off Fred Mertz.
The trick here is for the adult actors to be able to follow along wherever Bailey may want to take them. And that sometimes includes out into the audience.
Hilarity abounds in the second act when a very pregnant Lucy announces it's time to go to the hospital. Although Ricky and the Mertzes have
practiced what each one is to do when that time comes, all bedlam breaks loose.
The multitalented Storc -- he entertains the audience with a piano concert during intermission -- couldn't resist adding a few songs, even though this play is not billed as a musical.
Elghanian solos with "Love One, Love Many." Sam Warner sings "We're Having a Baby" to his wife, and Cheryl Warner sings "Maybe Baby Boy" to her husband.
THEATRX definitely is audience-friendly, and the theater can always use more people in its audiences. "Lucy" is a great way to enjoy a carefree couple of hours of lighthearted entertainment. Performances continue Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons, through Aug. 29.
