Kathy Mattea -- Mattea is a certified Nashville success story best known for recording such classics as "18 Wheels and A Dozen Roses" which won CMA's 1988, "Single of the Year." The music of Moving Mountains is adapted from Mattea's newest album "Coal," a powerful collection of plaintive mining songs which chronicles the lives, labors, and losses endemic to coal culture. Raised near Charleston, West Virginia, Mattea was brought up in a mining family: both parents grew up in coal camps, her grandfathers were both miners and her mother worked for the local UMWA. To prepare for the project, Mattea had to master Appalachian yell-singing, a precursor of bluegrass. But it was the Sago Mine Disaster in 2006 that quickened her resolve to serve the sacred use of music and provide voice "for a whole group of people, a place, a way of life"; 8 p.m. March 27; University Theatre, UC Riverside, 900 University Ave., Riverside; $40 general, $20 students; (951) 827-4629.

"Neil Greenberg's Really Queer Dance with Harps" -- The random patterns of "excessive," "flamboyant," and "ambiguous" movements are eloquently rendered as one continuous stream of motion in "Neil Greenberg's Really Queer Dance with Harps." Greenberg's highly-skilled dancers execute individualized movement sequences suffused with unconventional physicality, vague gestures and layered meanings.
