The first release from the new here! Films initiative, dealing in gay and lesbian-themed projects for movies and television, "Shelter" is just as much a universal story of trying to get it all together and stay happy.
The film stars Trevor Wright as Zach, an artist and surfer who is one of those people who spends more time helping others than doing his own thing. Zach feels responsible for the care of his young nephew, whose single mother -- Zach's sister -- never seems to have time for her child.
Zach has put on hold his dreams of becoming a professional artist, but is inspired again when he reacquaints himself with Shaun (Brad Rowe), a surfer and screenwriter taking a break and returning home to California. Zach likes Shaun's get-it-done attitude, and Shaun offers his support. The two begin a romantic relationship, Zach at last making a break from his longtime girlfriend, who has mostly given up on Zach.
All would be fine except for the inevitable negative reaction of many who surround the new couple, including Zach's sister, who, despite her obvious need for self-inspection, turns her anger on her brother, and threatens to remove her son from his uncle's life. Feelings are calmed, though, and now Zach and Shaun must decide whether they can take the relationship further.
"Shelter" is a coming-out story, but more so a story of fading dreams revived, family struggles and other personal issues. Acting is so-so, and there are no heightened cinematic moments in the low-key presentation, but there's a basic, mature storytelling integrity that helps see the film through.
