Wrapping commentary on the contemporary art world around an offbeat love story, "Untitled" maintains an easy likability to join its workable satire.
The ever-reliable Adam Goldberg plays Adrian, a dissonant music composer whose noisy concerts are off-putting and annoying to most anyone who attends. That is, except to Madeline (Marley Shelton) an equally adventurous gallery owner who showcases the latest in, well, off-putting and annoying art installations.
Problem is, Madeline is somewhat romantically attached to Josh (Eion Bailey), Adrian's brother. Josh paints commercially viable paintings that Madeline secretly sells to keep the gallery afloat. In the works is a collision as jarring as some of Adrian's clang-bang musical compositions.
"Untitled" plays things straightforward and succeeds, mostly. The film is neither too clever or too base in its humor, and the characters maintain an integrity not compromised by their eccentricities. We don't yearn for the romance between the characters to blossom ---- the sly comedy and cool banter is more interesting ---- but there's also some heartfelt notions within. "Untitled," its title itself a casual comment on overbaked art-business lingo, does good business just by enjoying itself. The film opens Friday at the Hillcrest Cinemas in San Diego.
