For many musicians, setting themselves apart from other musical acts involves creating unique beats, writing original lyrics that provoke thoughts and feelings in the listener, and giving themselves a name that people will remember. While all of these things apply to Lake Elsinore-based band, A Fighting Failure, setting themselves apart from the rest has much to do with numbers -- as in age -- than anything else.

Combining the musical talents of Lake Elsinore's Fabian Morales, Wildomar's Colton Moore and Scott Welch; Canyon Lake's Bret Paddock, and Corona's Ryan Allard.

"We're all just kids," Morales said. "Ryan, Colton, and I are 14; Bret is 13; and Scott is the oldest member, he's 15. I think that it's nice to see kids as young as us perform with so much energy. I mean, most of the kids in bands nowadays all make little riffs that a beginner can play. We play our music with passion and technique."

The band joined forces in a mix of side projects, member makeovers, and jam sessions.

"At first, A Fighting Failure started out as a side project between Bret and two other members -- who will not be named," Morales said. "Together, we started creating material, but it didn't work out as well as we'd planned, so we decided to kick out our old drummer, and ask Colton to join. Soon after, we started jamming, and decided we wanted more out of the band, so we kicked out our old guitarist, and picked up Ryan. From there, we recruited a screamer, but after the first show he was booted out for various reasons, and I was asked to do vocals. Our bassist, Scott, joined us just a few weeks ago, and there you have it: A Fighting Failure."

A Fighting Failure plays Saturday at The Vault in Temecula, along with To Something Beautiful and Fall Before Me. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show is open to all ages. Upcoming shows include Showcase Theater in Corona on July 15.

"All of us have really unique personalities, and lend a little something to the band," Morales said. "Bret is our lead guitar player -- he is amazing at making us material for this band. Colton is our master of beats. He keeps us in line at shows, and is pretty sick. A lot of people say that he looks like Oliver from the Disney Channel show 'Hannah Montana.' I do our mean vocals. I sound like a beast and look like a gorilla. Ryan is our second guitarist. He helps keep A Fighting Failure together, and keeps us head-banging. And Scott is the new bassist. He's pretty sick. He helps out with our rhythm parts."

In regards to their upcoming Vault performance, A Fighting Failure, who credit artists such as To Something Beautiful, Fall Before Me, Between the Buried and Me, As Blood Runs Black and The Final Burden as influences, believe that show attendants won't be able to resist rocking out.

"They better expect to be brutalized," Morales said.
