Childhood obesity is a national epidemic. Why is this important to know?
This is important to know because many heavy children have weight problems as adults, and they have a higher risk of developing other health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, stroke and heart disease. Fortunately, there is something that you can do about it.
Recognition: Take a look in the mirror as children have a much higher risk for obesity if one or both of their parents are overweight. Are you being a good role model? If you are a good role model, yet have concerns about your childís weight, you should consult your pediatrician, who can calculate a Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI takes into account your childís age and height in determining if they are overweight.
Addressing Obesity: The good news is that whether you are preventing or treating obesity, the approach is the same. I think of obesity as a function of two important areas that children and their parents need to do better. Proper nutrition and adequate exercise are two areas equally important to work on with your children.
How can I help my child to eat healthier?
- Get the whole family eating healthy. It is good for everyone and your child will not feel singled out.
- Read the food labels at the grocery store and buy foods that are high in fiber, and low in fat.
- Limit juice intake and minimize soda intake
- Avoid trips to the grocery store with your kids, so you don't have to say 'No.' Let them choose from a variety of healthy choices in the house.
- Consider changing to low-fat or non-fat milk by 2 years of age.
- Have your child eat all healthy meals and snacks that are well timed and at the dinner table.
- Most importantly, make sure that all of your child's caretakers understand the nutrition plan and stick to it. Grandparents are often guilty parties by trying too much to appease your children.
How can I help my child exercise more?
- Limit TV and computer time. Children need at least 30 minutes of moderately vigorous exercise each day.
- Join a school or community sports team.
- If you have a pet, it can be your child's job to take it out for exercise every day.
- Have your child play games like tag, go bike riding or play basketball.
- Make the activities fun by getting the whole family to participate.
Take Home Message: It is critical for the entire family to get involved with the process. By exercising together regularly and eating healthy meals and snacks with your child, you will be serving as a great role model.
