HBO offers free service for Alzheimer's films

HBO is offering free online viewing for the debuts of four films in its "The Alzheimer's Project," which will run from Sunday-Tuesday. HBO is also working with affiliates to open the signal on its main channel, HBO On Demand and HBO HD services throughout "The Alzheimer's Project" so that the series can be made accessible to non-HBO subscribers. Check with your local cable company to see whether this is available in your area. Also, participating affiliates will make the four main feature films available on their broadband portals as well as their Free On Demand services, from Monday through June 8.

The first of the documentaries is "The Memory Loss Tapes" (debuting at 9 p.m. Sunday), which provides a personal look at seven individuals with Alzheimer's, across the full spectrum of the disease. "Momentum In Science" (8 p.m. Monday and 8 p.m. Tuesday) is a two-part film that takes viewers inside the laboratories and clinics of 25 leading scientists and physicians. "'Grandpa, Do You Know Who I Am?' with Maria Shriver" (7:30 p.m. Monday) captures what it means to be a child or grandchild of one with Alzheimer's, while "Caregivers" (7 p.m. Tuesday) highlights the sacrifices and successes of people who experience their loved one's descent into dementia. Cancer survivors to celebrate June 7

LA JOLLA -- Scripps Cancer Center will host a free celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 7 for area cancer survivors, their families and the community as part of the 22nd annual National Cancer Survivor's Day at the Valerie Timken Amphitheater at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla. "A Celebration of Life" will include inspirational stories from area cancer survivors, plus a special musical performance. A Scripps oncologist will discuss new research that may help doctors improve the way they monitor the effectiveness of cancer treatments. The event is open to anyone living with a history of cancer, regardless of where they received treatment. Scripps Green Hospital is at 10666 N. Torrey Pines Road.
