VISTA -- A man fatally shot by Vista sheriff's deputies after a physical altercation Saturday night was identified today as a 27-year-old Vista man, authorities said.
David Lopez had allegedly threatened his family with a knife when deputies were called at 6:15 p.m. to the Vista Terraces Mobile Home Park on the 1200 block of North Santa Fe, Lt. Dennis Brugos said.
When the three deputies arrived at the park, they were directed to a different mobile home than the call had originally come from, Brugos said. Just outside of that home, deputies were confronted by Lopez and a struggle ensued in which Lopez was shot, Brugos said.
The shots were fired at about 7:25 p.m. and Lopez was pronounced dead at 8:12 p.m., Brugos said. Neither the deputies nor any member of Lopez's family were injured, he said.
Lopez is also the suspect in two separate assaults prior to the deputies' arrival that are unrelated to the domestic disturbance call, Brugos said.
Brugos also said Saturday night that there are unconfirmed reports of restraining orders issued against Lopez.
Early reports also indicate that Lopez did not know the residents of the home where he was shot, he said.
The incident Saturday was the fourth fatal shooting by Vista deputies since the summer of 2005, when three men were fatally shot in separate incidences over five days. Investigations have since cleared the deputies of any wrongdoing.
However, the shootings last year also sparked outrage among many Vista residents and activists, and spurred heated public debates, candlelight vigils and the creation of a Latino-rights coalition.
