OCEANSIDE -- Nearly 200 people flooded the Oceanside City Council chambers on Wednesday night, some in Chargers hats and jackets, to tell city leaders how they feel about the professional football team building a state-of-the-art stadium on a piece of city-owned land in central Oceanside.
The crowd at Wednesday's meeting filled all available seats in the council chambers, then lined the back walls and spilled outdoors, prompting the city's fire chief to stand up and issue a reminder that the exits should be clear and safety rules should be followed.
Discussion about the team was expected to begin about 5:45 p.m.
Over the past two weeks, city officials and Chargers' representatives have begun to discuss the idea that a stadium be built on the Center City Golf Course, near the intersection of Interstate 5 and Oceanside Boulevard.
The Chargers want to leave aging Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley within the next decade for a facility with luxury suites that could generate millions of dollars annually for the team. The Chargers have said they want to stay in San Diego County, and are looking for a city to provide land for a stadium and a development, saying revenues from the development would help pay for a $700 million stadium.
