OCEANSIDE -- A 2-year-old boy drowned in a pool Monday at his Oceanside home, authorities said.
The baby was discovered not breathing in the pool by family members about 4:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of Havenwood Drive, fire Capt. Bill Kogerman said.
A family member gave the boy cardio pulmonary resuscitation before police officers and paramedics arrived, he said.
The toddler was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The baby's name was not released.
"It's a tragic situation, very tragic," Kogerman said.
Oceanside fire Battalion Chief Jerry Abshier said this was the first child drowning that he recalled this year.
"If someone reading this article can prevent future injury or death to another child, there could be something positive that would come out of something so negative like this," Kogerman said.
Experts emphasize that children must never be left unattended even for a minute or two near water, even shallow water, because drownings happen very quickly, Kogerman said, adding that "children drown without a sound."
