Limit cell phone calls; use text messaging

Please limit cell phone calls to help emergency response to the wildfires. But feel free to send text messages.

That's the message to San Diego County residents from emergency officials and Verizon Wireless.

The County of San Diego's Office of Emergency Preparedness issued an advisory Monday morning urging residents not to make unnecessary cell phone calls, to keep channels clear for emergency use.

In addition, reverse-911 evacuation calls are not being made to cell phones. So cell phone-only residents need to keep tuned to news reports to know if the fires are threatening them.

Text messages are fine, said Ken Muche, a spokesman for Verizon Wireless. "Text messages will not clog up our network at all, so the emergency crews will not be impacted by trading texts."

No word was available immediately from other cell phone providers about using text messaging.
