ENCINITAS -- A couple are awaiting arraignment next week on suspicion of elder financial abuse for credit card fraud and trying to steal the home of an elderly blind couple who are suffering from advancing dementia, sheriff's officials said.

"This is the most egregious financial case that I have investigated in 3 1/2 years of elder abuse investigations," sheriff's Detective Deborah Boyd said.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Gina Trevino, 48, and her husband Robert Holman, 33, of Encinitas on Sept. 1 on suspicion of multiple grand theft and credit card fraud violations, she said.

Trevino was hired in January by a caregiving agency and she and Holman moved into the elderly couple's home in the 700 block of Ocean Crest Road, Boyd said.

By May, Trevino and Holman allegedly had the elderly couple sign over their power of attorney and immediately got a quitclaim deed on their home of 40 years. Trevino and Holman purchased three new vehicles using the couple's credit cards and ordered extensive cable services including pornography, Boyd said.

Trevino and Holman then moved the elderly couple out of their home and into an Oceanside motel.

Authorities intervened and served an emergency protective order and a kick-out order to Trevino and Holman. The elderly couple was returned to their home, but Trevino and Holman allegedly continued to victimize the couple by using fraudulent credit cards in their names to rent out motel rooms in North County and rack up other charges, she said.

The investigation showed that Trevino and Holman placed a vacation hold on the couple's mail which revealed extensive credit card fraud. The extent of the credit card fraud is still under investigation but the loss is about $53,000, Boyd said.

"They were calculating, devious, and premeditating," Boyd said of Trevino and Holman.

Trevino and Holman will be arraigned at the Vista courthouse Tuesday on a litany of charges including theft by a caretaker, grand theft auto, conspiracy to commit fraud, and possession of stolen property.
